Joe Biden Officiates Same-Sex Wedding

ABC News reports:

Vice President Joe Biden officiated his first wedding ever — and it was for a same sex couple.

Biden officiated over the wedding of two longtime White House staffers, Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie, at the Naval Observatory on Monday, his office said.

Posting a photo of the ceremony on Twitter, Biden wrote, “Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.”

His office said the vice president obtained a temporary certification from the District of Columbia to preside over the wedding ceremony, which was attended only by the grooms’ families.

  • Mark

Congrats to the grooms – and Thank YOU! Mr. Biden!

  • Jamsie

  • See? this just proves Biden was never fit for office! Off with his head!

(seriously though, Congrats to the happy couple, and thanks, mr Biden)

    • KCMC

mind bogglingly super! Still wrapping mind around, grooms’ plural. What a world.

      • TuuxKabin

June 8, 2001 el husbian and I had our first ceremony, domestic partnership (sounds like we do house work) and we signed the invitations to our announcement and reception as June Grooms. We got it from a New Yorker magazine cover the previous June. To some friends were addressed jointly as JG’s. It’s been fun.

  • geoffalnutt

Could Joe Biden be any more wonderfuller??!! Congratulations all!!

    • sherman

Yes. People forget about his support of the bankruptcy bill passed in 2005. As Arianna Huffington put it:

““So what does the bill do? It makes it harder for average people to file for bankruptcy protection; it makes it easier for landlords to evict a bankrupt tenant; it endangers child-support payments by giving a wider array of creditors a shot at post-bankruptcy income; it allows millionaires to shield an unlimited amount of equity in homes and asset-protection trusts; it makes it more difficult for small businesses to reorganize while opening new loopholes for the Enrons of the world; it allows creditors to provide misleading information; and it does nothing to rein in lending abuses….”

      • Adam King

There is no politician who is perfect in all ways. Never has been, never will be. We have to weigh their strengths against their weaknesses, alas. But that’s the nature of democracy and the strategic coalitions it demands. To get to a majority, to get anything done, everybody has to compromise something.

        • David Walker

Witness the current congress: No talking to the minority party, no compromises, nothing gets done. And they’re proud of that.

    • KCMC

      YEA, Uncle Joe!!!!

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

i got little tears in my eyes… my life’s work is complete. A VP marries two men and I finally had an emotion.

      • Robincho

Just lie down for a while, hon. It will pass…

  • Oikos

Congrats to these guys! Love wins everytime!

  • kaydenpat

    Good looking couple. Congrats!

P.S. This is something you would never see from a Republican administration.

    • Adam King

Those guys sort of look alike.

      • TuuxKabin

Yeah, they do. Both of ’em are pretty damn a door bell.

        • Adam King

      • David Walker

That’s not supposed to happen until after a couple of years.

  • BearEyes

    Mazel Tov, Gentlemen!
And thanks, Uncle Joe for all you do.

  • Beagle

    Congrats to the couple!

  • delk

Love the look on Joe’s face.

Pence would probably be putting hand-cuffs on the guys.

    • Gustav2

What? Pence would join in on the honeymoon?

  • j.martindale

Hillary up by nine. tRump digging himself in deeper with the vets. Repugs in turmoil over horrific candidate. Stock market at all time highs. And Vice President marries a couple of gay guys. Yep, starting the morning off right.

    • Gustav2

Utah could vote Democrat for president for first time in 5 decades

A new Hinckley Institute-Salt Lake Tribune poll shows the two are virtually tied with 35 percent for Donald Trump and 36 percent for Hillary Clinton. That is as close as a Democratic candidate has been to victory in more than half a century.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think many Republicans are telling themselves they can grit their teeth and tolerate 4 years of her since they can play the blame game but 4 years of him making their party and THEM look bad is too much.

        • StraightGrandmother

I think the Republicans think that if they maintain control of at least one house of Congress that they can just spend four years blocking her.

I mean really what is their choice?
I have deep red Republican friends and they say they simply will not vote. That sounds good to me too. The more Republicans who refuse to vote the better :-‘)

          • Snownova

Because fat lot of good it did them blocking Obama. I mean they stopped and slowed down plenty, but in the end he got sh*t done!

          • Rambie

I doubt Hillary will even try to reach out like Obama did for the first several years too. But they also stopped a bunch of stuff too; just look at the vacancies is the judicial system and not just on the SC.

          • Librarykid

Are the deep red Republicans taking responsibility for what their party has become?

      • Rambie

The demographics in Utah are changing too, much higher percentage of minorities and poor-white too. Sure many of them lean conservative but Trump even turns off the financially well off Mormons too.

I doubt Utah will go Hillary but it could be the first time it goes Libertarian for President.

      • Gene

I am developing a ….sick, twisted, sense of respect, for the LDS members I know. I LOATH their batshit faith and ideas. BUT…many of them are telling me “I believe in marriage (I dont ask how many) and family values. Decency and propriety…of the decency of The American Presidents, and that they should be examples my children can look up to as Gentlemen. we were persecuted..we remember. And we dont like what Trump is saying about Muslims…its, wrong. My faith WONT let me vote for such a man”

Now…in contrast, the Southern Baptists, who profess..out loud, on paper, but not in their lives, most of what was said above, are alllllll on board for him (a few exceptions of leaders at the top, but the rank and file membership? see polling from AK to SC to TN to TX.)
the Souther Baptists have sold what they believe and who they claim their are for a political victory.

there is a term for people who see themselves.

At least the freaky Mormons are…many of them at least, standing true to what they believe. I dont believe like them, but…I DO respect that.
does that makes sense to you all? Cause I never thought I would be praising them

        • William

Can Mormons support a woman being in charge? She would be thinking on her own and not be in the kitchen or taking care of grandchildren.

        • Hryflex

In local theatre I often work with a choreographer whose family is all LDS (she used to teach dance at Brigham Young). She loathes Trump — but then again, she has had funny things to say about “those cute little Elders who don’t know they’re gay yet.”

          • Stacyktennyson

        • mark99k

Makes perfect sense, and I think it was bound to happen sooner or later — far-right closeted lechery & scumminess (e.g., Newt) begat far-right brazen lechery & scumminess (Trump) and eventually some decent-sized chunk of old-school prim&proper citizenry could be expected throw up their collective hands and say nope. Doesn’t surprise me that it looks like it’ll be the Mormons, since, unlike the Evangelicals, the Mormons tend to place actual (unpretended) emphasis on education & respectability.

In that same connection, I’d like to know what the Amish think of Trump. I realize they typically don’t vote and are unexposed to TV and social media, but I can’t imagine they’re unaware of what’s going on.

    • TuuxKabin
    • Steven Leahy

….And we still have three months left to go. I wonder what else could happen with Trump?

      • Harley

Depends on if his kids can put a muzzle on him, or get him psychiatric help. Thor help the US.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

If his kids were responsible, they would have kept him from running in the first place.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I can totally see him in a sex scandal of some sort. Maybe he tweets a crotch pic.

      • David Walker

OK…so Drumpf somehow wonderfully, disgustingly, appropriately, fabulously, predictably drops out of the race. That leaves us the honorable Gov. Pence, rather worse even than Drumpf. Pence has a track record, a paper trail, and it’s not at all encouraging.

        • Steven Leahy

That’s the sad reality of it all. Despite Trump’s outrageous comments and shenanigans, most of the alternatives, from a policy standpoint, were worse.

      • Rambie

I’m hoping Hillary’s team has come up with a death-by-a-thousand cuts anti-Trump campaign ads showing how terrible he is at business/life/honesty. Plus, it doesn’t seam to take much to set him off, so let’s all try to keep him spewing on Twitter and foaming at the mouth. If we all needle him he’s bound to go red-faced at least once every two weeks over something.

        • Steven Leahy

Yep, agree, that would be the most effective thing she could do – use his own antics against him. She’s already doing it with the ad showing kids watching Trump make a bunch of his comments and make fun of the disabled reporter.

          • Rambie

Yes, that’s an awesome ad and hopefully one of many. But I’d like to see some really get under his skin and set him off on a Twitter tirade or live on TV evne.

    • Zoey

I made the mistake of first reading this on Yahoo News which I beleive most of the Breitbard and WND freaks have as their go to site too. It’s the end of the world. Sodom and Gomorrah, etc.

  • Paige Turner

Your VP is really remarkable. Im not sure how he is viewed stateside but when he was here last month he was quite something.

Here is is with our foreign ministerJulie Bishop a few days ago. The backdrop needs no explanation.

    • Adam King

      Cool shades, Mr. VP.

    • Steven Leahy

I am going to miss him almost as much as I will President Obama.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I confess I wouldn’t have minded him running for Pres. He may be prone to gaffes but he has a definite charm. Another point in his favor is that IIRC, his wife teaches at community colleges.

      • abel

At one point, I seem to be remember, Biden sort of “jumped the gun” and supported us when Obama might not have been quite ready to announce his own support.

        • Steven Leahy

Hey was KEY, in my opinion, on the administrations’s change in position in this issue.

        • Lumpy Gaga

You are correct, sir (or madam).

    • Lumpy Gaga

Im not sure how he is viewed stateside

Frequently painted as a stumbling clown by comedians, for a start. I think it’s because they have to pick on SOME Democrat because balance.

      • Paige Turner

He was far from that whist on the visit here. He had movie star cred and looked and behaved accordingly.

        He did your country proud.

    • douglas

We love him in Canada too!

    • EdmondWherever

      The backdrop needs no explanation.

      That’s 42 Wallaby Way, right?

      • Paige Turner

        Struth Mate. You’re right.

        Bennelong Point to be precise

  • Ernest Endevor

Wait. There are gays in the white house?

    • lymis

      And they have staffs!

    • Reality.Bites

Once they started letting VPs in it was all downhill!

Walter Mondale was the first VP to have an office in the White House. All subsequent VPs have had one. Well I guess Quayle had a playroom.

  • billbear1961
    • abel

That was seraphic, thanks, Billbear. Don’t often know where to go with Baroque vocal music – there seems to be so much of it!

  • Scott_Lumry

I am glad to share our anniversary date with these two, and will mark this as the first time a sitting Vice President of the United States has conducted such a ceremony. I love this date more every year.

    • TuuxKabin

Congratulations! Enjoy it all, every day,24/7/365. It’s a blast! How long has it been, if I may ask?

      • Scott_Lumry

The answer to “How long has it been,” is 1 year. We have, however, been together as a couple for 23 more than that.

        • TuuxKabin

We did the ‘partnership’ at 20 years. Then at 30 we married in Ct. since NY only recognized ssm, did not ‘legalize’ them until a bit later. Now of course . . .

    • TuuxKabin
    • BobSF_94117

I wonder under what authority Biden performed the ceremony. (You’d think if it were a part of VP privileges, someone else would have done it already.)

      • William

They were standing in the bathtub, so he used his honorary Admiral status.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Highest ranking official on a sinking ship?

  • Reality.Bites

I’m going to hold on to this photo and in five years or so use to to prove to someone gullible that 60s sitcoms had gay wedding episodes.

    • William

Oscar and Felix had to get hitched in order to keep that fabulous rent controlled apartment.

  • StraightGrandmother

One comment I read and it sounds true to me is, “If Hillary gets elected we will simply immediately impeach her”
I bet they will try that, I bet they do.

    • Michael White

I agree whole heartedly. There will be fewer votes on Affordable Care Act and totally vote after vote to impeach her.

I am so sorry your mind works like mine. LOL

      • StraightGrandmother

It is the damned Tea Partiers who will never compromise about a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g
        They desiregridlock.

  • Michael White

I am so proud of being a Democrat, since 1972 my first chance to vote.

  • StraightGrandmother

Nice, this helps normalize gay relationships in our culture.
One more public wedding picture of a gay couple, add it to the list.

  • Bluto

You’ve done it now, Uncle Joe. You have to recuse yourself from everything.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Sigh…..another reminder that the two parties are exactly the same. /s

Joe Biden, V.P. – A MAN for ALL the PEOPLE!!!!

    Four more years!

    The times they are achangin’!

  • Ron

Merely the visual provided by the photo made my heart skip a beat! To Joe and Dr. Jill mazel tov! To the grooms a lifetime of cherishing each other and the accomplishments of your boss!

  • Sally

Talk about making a mockery of an institution! It’s shameful to have Hairplugs Biden officiate at anything, be it the opening of an envelope or, Goddess forbid, a wedding!!

    • JustSayin’

A troll! A troll! The trolls are invading! You Douche!

    • Schlukitz

Amazing how much Brian and Joe look alike.

    • FelineMama

You know, I saw this over at MPS & thought the exact same thing!! I was gonna comment but didn’t.
More of this VP before you & Pres. O leave. Dammint!!
      It makes certain heads ‘splode.

  • TrollopeReader

    The photo is soooo 1950s ! 🙂

    Congrats, guys!

  • ben-andy

Cue the Cat-lick “Lady in Red” to say Joe can’t take communion. He’ll have a pithy reply.

  • GanymedeRenard

Aaaaaaand Mr. Biden is a practicing Catholic, right? I’d like to hear the opinion of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops about this. Will they deny him the communion? What would good ole’ Francis say? Delish.

  • JCF

Mazel Tov! Kisses to the grooms, and BIG HUGZ to our beloved Veep Joe! <3
