HISTORY: Openly Gay US Army Secretary Eric Fanning Rides As Grand Marshal In San Diego Pride Parade

From the San Diego Union-Tribune:

When Eric Fanning started working at the Pentagon as an aide, the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy had just begun. The 24-year-old didn’t have gay role models in the building. A lot has changed in the United States military since then.

In May, 24 years later, Fanning was appointed secretary of the Army — becoming the first openly gay person to lead any branch of the U.S. armed forces. He’s in town this weekend to participate in San Diego Pride events, including serving as a grand marshal of Saturday’s Pride parade in Hillcrest and Balboa Park.

San Diego’s Pride parade is noteworthy as the nation’s first gay-centered parade where active-duty service members marched together with shirts identifying their status as a sailor, soldier, airman or Marine.

It was July 2011, and the ban on openly gay military service — “don’t ask, don’t tell” — was in its final months. Feeling the momentum, a contingent of troops based in San Diego County made national headlines by stepping forward in that highly public way. The following year, gay service members marched in uniform at Pride parades here and elsewhere.

    • Acronym Jim

      We asked his boyfriend.

Re military men in tighty-whities, my husband and I sometimes dine in Annapolis here in Maryland, home to the U.S. Naval Academy, and oh mama… the boys in their cute white sailor outfits roamin’ the streets.

I think the picture I posted is of plebes engaged in some sort of farcockta ceremony or something. (Farcockta = Yiddish for weird, strange, meshuga.)

What’s odd is that when you spot them on the Annapolis streets just strolling around or taking in the sights, they’re always in same-sex pairings. I don’t think I’ve ever seen male and female plebes together.

          And don’t get me wrong.

          Not complaining. 😉

No no no. Your gay is showing. I suspect they were shouting out “Yes…SIR!!!”

          • another_steve

            Well of course.

They stopped making “masculine and sexy” after they made Brando.

          • JerryRich

Kelly was a good Hollywood liberal which made him even more gorgeous.

          • Adam King

          • Elagabalus

          • another_steve

Yes, but being young today must be a challenge, don’t you think?

I can’t imagine what it’s like to be young these days and to put on the cable news first thing in the morning or go to one’s favorite online news feed.

Takes a certain moral fortitude to remain frisky and optimistic these days.

          • Elagabalus

I’m sure a President McCain, Romney or Trump would have gladly repealed DADT and made all of this possible.
Because both parties are the same right?

Thanks for reminding me of that horrible spectacle created by McCain when his filibuster of the DADT repeal authorization was broken in the 2010 lameduck session. • another_steve

“The oddness of Wegmans” is a good way of putting it. Attracts a very eclectic clientele. Lots of queer people shop at the one near me. The guys go there right from the gym, so they’re all in their workout shorts and sweaty and the like.

So, like, I’m looking for the hummus bar and there are all these adonises traipsing about.

SD is my hometown. I remember back when San Diego Pride was once WeHo Pride’s ugly second cousin. I used to sneak around with the closeted military boys afterward on Pride weekend during DADT. I remember a depressing dinner with my ex-BF at Hamburger Mary’s in Hillcrest the Year Clinton signed DOMA… Now we they are getting people like Fanning to be the Grand Marshal?

    Proud 🙂

The amazing thing was that DADT was supposed to be a “compromise”. Yeah, sure it was. What a fucked up policy.

A return to the realities of history.

They were called the Sacred Band of Thebes. An army of male lovers revered for their courage in battle. Three concepts, which together, would be sure to make christofascist heads explode.

      • Elagabalus

Well, not always. I seem to recall that in the movie “Alexander,” they didn’t exactly back away from his love affair with Hephaestion, even if they didn’t exactly embrace it with gusto.

        • JT

Unfortunately, They spent far too much time on his hetero marriage and too little on the love match of his life with Hephaestion.

Didn’t Claudius’ wife poison him? So much for correctness.

          • JT

Many historians think so. But that was Agrippina, mother of Nero. Claudius wasn’t Nero’s father and only adopted him. Not a wise move.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

IIRC, Nero later ordered his mother killed. I think ancient Roman history is even weirder in a lot of ways than GoT.

          • another_steve

And ironically, in the classic BBC TV series of Robert Graves’ “I,Claudius,” Derek Jacobi — a superb and very gay actor — played Claudius.

          That would be hot.

        • JT

Yes, they were only defeated by Alexander and Philip, his father. Until then, they were considered invincible. They perished to a man. Philip wept to see the result of their bravery and said, “Perish any man who suspects that these men either did or suffered anything unseemly.”

          • coram nobis

The wiki page is a good and succinct history.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Band_of_Thebes

          • JT

Plutarch writes beautifully about why it was so effective.

For tribesmen and clansmen make little account of tribesmen and clansmen in times of danger; whereas, a band that is held together by the friendship between lovers is indissoluble and not to be broken, since the lovers are ashamed to play the coward before their beloved, and the beloved before their lovers, and both stand firm in danger to protect each other. 3 Nor is this a wonder, since men have more regard for their lovers even when absent than for others who are present, as was true of him who, when his enemy was about to slay him where he lay, earnestly besought him to run his sword through his breast, “in order,” as he said, “that my beloved may not have to blush at sight of my body with a wound in the back.” 4 It is related, too that Iolaüs, who shared the labours of Heracles and fought by his side, was beloved of him. And Aristotle says17 that even down to his day the tomb of Iolaüs was a place where lovers and beloved plighted mutual faith. It was natural, then, that the band should also be called sacred, because even Plato calls the lover a friend “inspired of God.”18 5 It is said, moreover, that the band was never beaten, until the battle of Chaeroneia;19 and when, after the battle, Philip was surveying the dead, and stopped at the p387place where the three hundred were lying, all where they had faced the long spears of his phalanx, with their armour, and mingled one with another, he was amazed, and on learning that this was the band of lovers and beloved, burst into tears and said: “Perish miserably they who think that these men did or suffered aught disgraceful.”

        • That_Looks_Delicious

          Graphic, even. 😉

And if there were only some way of contriving that a state or an army
should be made up of lovers and their beloved, they would be the very
best governors of their own city, abstaining from all dishonour, and
emulating one another in honour; and when fighting at each other’s side,
although a mere handful, they would overcome the world. For what lover
would not choose rather to be seen by all mankind than by his beloved,
either when abandoning his post or throwing away his arms? He would be
ready to die a thousand deaths rather than endure this. Or who would
desert his beloved or fail him in the hour of danger?

      • JT

But then, they never understood the dream of America, or the ideal of the Constitution. It is possible that the “originalists” believe America has been fulfilled, as simply and soon as the thing was ratified.

We have to get more of this happening. (I assume it’s some color-coding for sections in the arena… but “white” opens it up for this.) If they had gay decorators and organizers, we’d have “burnt sienna” and “cerulean” elevators.

      • Lazycrockett

OT: Nadja Brandys Gets Guff/Praise For Listening To Her Conscience…

An interesting personal interest story about a Polish employment recruiter faceing backlash for turning down a candidate after seeing his Facebook postings that praised the Orlando massacre. I liked it because it reminds me that there are hundreds of millions of people who do the right thing every day.

    http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/nadja-brandys-applicant-facebook/#gs.GtZvN5c

    • djcoastermark

I too saw that. Some of the ‘detractors” comments are just awful.

  • O/T: In most presidential campaigns, after the Veep pick is announced, normally the lucky person spends the next several days, at minimum, often a week or more, appearing jointly with the top of the ticket at campaign events. Y’know, to introduce them to the crowds, get some press coverage, do a full media roll-out, etc. Make the most of the big event.

After a reportedly very awkward interview on 60 Minutes during which Pence couldn’t explain why he’d fully jettisoned his dignity and refused to answer direct questions about Trump’s childish name-calling and negative campaigning, Mike Pence does none of these things.

He just has dinner with his family at Chilis–

The same campaign were once you introduce your vp pick you walk off the stage leaving him alone.

      • DaddyRay
        • Lazycrockett

I don’t think they even did the raise your clenched fist together in unity photo op. That whole press conference just enforced in me that Drumpf is on drugs.

          • DaddyRay

That is what I was thinking – he was rambling and certainly not into his own VP pick

          • Lazycrockett

He’s like a wide open faucet of rambling inconsistent non sense world salad.

          • I think he is, too. On drugs, that is. The other thing, too, is Trump’s obvious narcissistic personality disorder was on full display. He couldn’t even bring himself to talk for more than a few seconds about the guy he’d just picked to be his Veep. No bio, no reasons why Pence was chosen above all the others, no “here’s why you’re gonna love him as much as I do”.

I’m also beginning to wonder if Trump is tired of campaigning altogether. It’s obvious the ego-feeding isn’t working as well as it did six months ago.

      • I saw that. Drumpf rambled on about himself for half an hour, only occasionally remembering he was supposed to introduce Pence as his running mate. Then, finally after doing so, fled the stage immediately.

He didn’t even really say much of anything about Pence, just the equivalent of “here he is”, and gone.

And to answer your other comment down there, no, there was no upraised hands together or anything. All Trump did was pat Pence on the shoulder and bail.

        • Lazycrockett

I’m almost tempted to bet that Drumpf will drop Pence before Wednesday the way this is playing out.

      • safari

Hookers and blow in the back?

        • Lazycrockett

After watching the press conference this morning the blow was already up Drumpf’s nose.

    • Lazycrockett

Plus you know that Drumpf was forced into picking Pence by his children and that is gonna be just a slow burn until Drumpf explodes in some 3 in the morning twitter rant.

      • DaddyRay

Drumpf doesn’t know how to share the spotlight – he always has to be the center of attention

        • clay

When Trump talks about “his team”, he means the team that works for him, not the team he’s a member of.

      • I’m increasingly convinced there is a greater than zero percent chance Trump will quit before November.

      • Ninja0980

Indeed, he is going to blow his gasket sooner or later… I can’t wait for that.

    • djcoastermark

Why he jettisoned his dignity ? you so funny. One word, republican.

    • Lazycrockett

Im surprised that they were able to find that many Hoosiers to come out and welcome him back.

    • More fun:

Frustrated at the lack of enthusiasm for his vice presidential pick Mike Pence, Donald Trump is now telling those close to him that he wants a do-over of sorts, which he aims to get by rolling out the names of potential cabinet members, a source who spoke to Trump told The Huffington Post.

      Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-pence-cabinet_us_578a2fd6e4b08608d334c354?g37dyhk5ncatw3ik9

Mind, just as it’s normal for a campaign to be prepared for a major media rollout and days of joint campaigning with the proposed VP nominee (which Trump didn’t do and isn’t doing), it is decidedly abnormal for any presidential candidate to start publicizing cabinet picks until after they’ve actually been elected and are the President Elect.

totally totally O(ff)T: Beauty is real, and worthy of wonder and joy.

so, like, i live in an ugly neighborhood. not pretty houses, etc. it’s right now hot here, and at the same time, i feel stuck in the house, b/c reasons. the dog needed some time outside, so i sat on the stoop and let him out in the front yard. dangerous people were driving expensive cars and making noise on both sides of the block. they don’t like us, again, b/c reasons.

then, and it’s like what? 12:30? this is so wonderful. my good dog, the best of dogs who obeys commands and never hurts anything or anyone, but is still banned in certain fucked up cities, he sits there, guarding me, like a sentinel. hoodies and tough wannabes don’t fuck with us. but what dares come in to my carefully pampered gardens, that i’ve spent long hours rehabilitating in my urban renewal project?

a doe. my good dog sat on command and did not attack or chase. we let her come into the pea and woodland bed flower gardens, whatever, i can lose a few of those. but it was a little doe. a city doe. for fucks sake they live here. i could write an academic paper about why that is. but anyway, it was a nice change from politics and horror and bullshit. the Goddess favors those who care for her children.

    • Last thread of the night is nearly always an invitation for off-topic comments. 🙂 Love your story, CD.

      • johncAtl

Yeah. I still wonder what Joe thought last week when he got up and saw the number of comments on a thread that shouldn’t have had very many, but then the shootings in Dallas had happened.

        • DaddyRay

I remember Joe posting an interview he gave where he was asked about his blog and he made the comment that sometimes he was surprised when topics he thought wouldn’t generate much interest got hundreds of comments. We are a fun eccentric community and that is why I love it here so much

          • Same. Even when there’s nothing particularly going on, it’s still fun. You guys and gals are terrific.

Also, the event live-blog commenting has SAVED my sanity over the last year. My wife has come into my home office here on many nights, with some GOP debate going on via stream or on the TV and me typing furiously. She’s learned to ask, “Joe My God?” And I just nod. “Yup. Having a blast tonight. Trump’s bragging about the alleged size of his dick now.”

          • johncAtl

Little Marco scored one good hit when he pointed out The Donald’s small hands. That one got under Trump’s thin skin.

          • DaddyRay

The DNC needs to use Trump’s thin skin against him – it is when he goes off script most often. While this may have worked in the primary with his own party it doesn’t play so well with the independents

          • Liz Warren has been an absolute genius at doing this, and I hope she doesn’t stop.

          • johncAtl

She ought to do a video dressed as Pocahontas talking about him. Ivanka would have to take away his access to Twitter.

          • SoCalGal20

Ivanka must have taken away his phone earlier because he never responded to Elizabeth Warren’s rant today.

          • True, but you must admit, getting under Trump’s skin doesn’t take much at all.

I honestly think the GOPer candidates for Prez could’ve caused Trump to completely melt down if they’d only gotten their shit together sooner. As it was, they just wouldn’t do it until each of them was on his way out of the race altogether and thus had nothing to lose for trying.

          • Lazycrockett

So I have to ask since I wasn’t spending much time here 4 years ago how does the conventions get covered here? OT thread or live thread?

          • I don’t know. I wasn’t here for the last one. But if Joe posts them, I will show up.

Also strongly considering (and probably will) recording the Colbert/Stewart coverage which is supposed to happen.

          • Lazycrockett

Honestly if CBS and Colbert were smart they should just let Jon and Colbert, in character, do the whole week. That would be a gold mine.

          • Lazycrockett

cause while Trevor Noah is cute as a button he’s just not invested enough in American politics to bring it.

          • Yeah… TDS just isn’t the show it was. And part of it also was many of the best writers and ‘correspondents’ left when Jon did. Including Sam Bee and her crew.

            Sam Bee is slaying it.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Cleveland and Columbus both have a lot of deer coming into the cities now, because (a) no natural predators anymore since all the wolves, bears and big cats are gone in Ohio, except for cars (srsly, more cars kill deer now than anything else); and (b) suburban sprawl has decimated their normal woodland habitats and it’s now easier for them to forage in cities. When I has living in Columbus, deer gnawed my hostas down one year to the point they never came back. They devoured my neighbors’ grapevines too.

I know they really don’t like strong herbs (oregano, thyme, mint, etc.) or hot peppers and you can spray any plants you want to keep them away from with a tea made from those, but you have to periodically re-apply after every rain.

In 2008 the billionaire Republican advised “pupils” at his now defunct business education company, Trump University, they could make a million dollars within a year by targeting vulnerable communities with individuals desperate to offload their properties. “Investors Nationwide are Making Millions in Foreclosures … AND SO CAN YOU!” he claimed in targeted newspaper adverts that carried photos of Trump staring sternly at camera with a slight smirk.

At this time the real estate mogul had only recently shuttered a brokerage company, Trump Mortgages, which had, according to insider accounts, offered subprime mortgages to customers through cold calls …
