GOP CAVES: House To Vote On Gun Control Bill

The Hill reports:

A week after Democrats staged a nearly 26-hour sit-in demanding a vote on gun control measures, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said the House will vote next week on legislation to block suspected terrorists from buying guns.

In a conference call Thursday, Ryan told rank-and-file Republicans that the House will take up a terrorism package that will include measures to disrupt radicalization and recruitment, as well as a provision to prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns, according to a source on the call.

It’s unclear exactly which bill will be brought to the floor. Democrats launched a daylong protest on the House floor last week demanding a vote on such legislation in the wake of the Orlando shooting rampage that killed 49.

Ryan on the call reiterated that it’s important to ensure suspected terrorists can’t obtain guns, calling it common sense. But the Speaker said he wanted to approach the issue deliberatively to protect due process and Second Amendment rights.

And the NRA gets a full week to cut new checks.

  • Rex

Who are you and what have you done with Paul Ryan?

    • MT YVR

Not that we mind… just… you know, don’t wanna step on the body.

      • TuuxKabin

        Or trip over it.

        • MT YVR

I know me. I’d likely step on it and drag the scent of Republican crazy through my house for WEEKS.

          • TuuxKabin

I was looking for the scene from “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mom’s Hung You In the Closet and I Feel Bad”, with Rosalind Russell tripping over the body of dead husband and yelling, “damn it Jonathan, you’re always in the way”. A young cute Robert Morse and Jonathan Winters also star.

          • MT YVR

Jeebus christo, that is not an easy scene to find. Surprisingly. (down the rabbit hole I go)

          • TuuxKabin

Wanted to comment in the ‘Toronto Pride’ post, regarding your experience. It appears your sense of humor has helped you survive and continue.

Reginald Thorkinson, great name, found this link for the movie:

          • MT YVR

Yep, it has. But then, as I like to tell people, when I first came to Vancouver I was raised as a newly out gay man by a flock of feral drag queens. I got my sarcasm, snark and humour from them. Or rather honed by them. 😉

I’m too bloody minded to not survive. lol Thanks, darlin.

          • TuuxKabin

I know what you mean. Buncha drag queens in SF in the 60’s honed my ‘can opening tongue’ to a T when I needed it. Not so much anymore.

          • Reginald Thorkinson

Couldn’t find that scene, but I did find the entire thing…

Watched a minute so far, and already very interesting…

          • TuuxKabin

A dark comedy to say the least. Thank you for taking the extra step. Think we’ll watch it tonight. Rosalind Russell always amazes me, Robert Morse is so damn cute, and Jonathan Winters is his usual wacky self.

  • Tulle Christensen

The bill will also include rolling back all rights for LBGTs and a tax increase for the upper 1%
You know just to make sure it does not pass

    • Lakeview Bob

Damn you! For bursting our bubble. You are most likely right.

    • TampaDink

Shouldn’t that be a tax decrease for the upper 1%?

      • ColdDesert

Not if you don’t want the bill to pass…which is the GOP’s goal.

  • Ninja0980

What poison pills will they include in it?

    • Reginald Thorkinson

Probably combine the national “religious liberty” bill with it,

    • Acronym Jim

Another attempt to repeal “Obamacare” of course. What else?

    • PickyPecker

      something…something….defund Planned Parenthoood…..something something…fetuses…something something mid-term abortions…..

      • Herald

add in bathrooms, low minimum wage, etc. like NC did

        • Chucktech

          and OBAMACARE!!11!!11

    • YakHerder

How about the part where they take away peoples’ rights based on their inclusion on a secret, unaccountable list, with no due process?

      • DaveW

        It’s not a right. It’s bad grammar b

        • Kay

When the ACLU opposes your gun control, you know the bill is flawed.

          • YakHerder

            CAIR also.

        • YakHerder

I take your meaning, man. I take your goddamn meaning. But the Supreme Court is under the delusion that it is a right, so that’s the “mode” in which I’m speaking. Anyway, we can just say “the part where they single people out for disparate treatment.” The argument loses none of its force.

    • Blake Jordan

  • BobSF_94117

All they’re going to do is stick a bit of gun control onto an otherwise noxious “anti-terrorism” bill of some sort in order to get Dems to vote for things they would not otherwise vote for (like bans on immigration from the Middle East — Israel excluded, of course).

    • CPT_Doom

The Turkish attackers have been identified as Russian and citizens of old Soviet republics. When is Drumpf going to call for a ban on their immigration?

      • MBear

The Orlando shooter was American, when is tRump going to call for a ban on THEIR immigration!!!

        • Tulle Christensen

We should also deport all of them that are already here too

        • JaniceInToronto

Well, he may have been a mentally ill pseudo-muslim gay but he was MERKIN! So there’s that I suppose…

Just build the damn wall. Around the entire perimeter of the U.S. That should keep everyone safe, right?

          • TrollopeReader

will you share the key to the door to Toronto?!

          • JaniceInToronto

Yes, but you have to pledge your eternal soul to Satan first.

          • TrollopeReader

oddly enough, I get fundraising emails addressed to “Satan” … *sigh*

          • JaniceInToronto

            Now I’m jealous.

          • TrollopeReader

          • MBear

okay…when I read ‘merkin’ I think of ‘merkin’ and not ‘murrikkkan’ (and other spellings.

Now I can’t get ‘merkin’ out of my head….Again!

      • J Ascher

He can’t or it would cut off his future supply of wives!

  • PickyPecker

    • Jay George

I needed that laugh right now. Thank you.

  • Cousin Bleh

Will this terrorism package include means to disrupt Christian radicalization and prevent Christian extremists from purchasing guns?

    • Lakeview Bob

I suspect that not all the people on the terror watch list are muslim.

    • And if not, the GOPeanut Gallery says that’s fine, but bare minimum the package should include a continental breakfast.

  • Mark Neé Fuzz

Talk is cheap. Will they do anything useful or just show up to vote Nay?

  • Sam_Handwich

i predict the bill will be a shit sandwich. Dems will vote against it or walk out…. the fragmented republican caucus won’t have enough votes on their own to pass it, and the GOP leadership will pretend they tried to take this issue seriously but the eeeevil Dems wouldn’t let them

    • Butch

And then the GOP can run ads trying to claim the Dems voted against “sensible” gun legislation.

      • MBear

And the murrikkan masses of ignorants will lap it up

    • Duh-David

      • Sam_Handwich

    • Joe in PA

Gee, how do you know that? It’s not like they’ve done that sort of thing in the past or anything. /s

    • CraigNJ

They will probably attach a amendment to the bill that would defund Planned Parenthood and ObamaCare. Here you can have this little crumb but you’ll have to give me everything I want for it.

    • David Walker

It won’t pass, of course, and it could well be a voice vote so none of the honorable republican house members votes will be recorded. And, as Joe notes, the NRA has a week to cut the checks.

      • (((GC)))

Can’t any of the honorable Democratic representatives call for a recorded vote? (We saw a few such calls and votes, mostly on parliamentary maneuvers, during coverage of the sit-in.)

        • David Walker

          I hope they will.

    • Joe knows who I am.

Wow! I swear, it’s almost like you seen this before, again, and again, and again,…

  • WebSlinger

I am pleased that the Democrats actions have resulted in another vote as there have been many American citizens of all kinds OUTRAGED that this bill did not pass…

    • billbear1961

They also don’t hesitate to pass laws which suppress the RIGHT to VOTE.

      • WebSlinger

Have to keep the poor and ethnic groups from voting freely…

        • billbear1961

          It’s in the right-wing BIBLE.

          • WebSlinger

Can I get that when I check into any of the Motel 6 locations throughout America??

          • billbear1961

You can get the right-wing edition OR an old Bible they’ve redacted, blocking out all the loving and “commie” bits they HATE.

          • TrollopeReader

and certainly *not* those Commie-printed Bibles where everything Jesus said was in Red! No siree!

          • billbear1961

Poor, sweet, hippy, pacifist, commie, maybe gay JC didn’t stand a chance THEN, and sure the HELL wouldn’t stand a chance TODAY, least of all with the vicious, two-faced CHRISTERS.

They’d crucify him a SECOND TIME.

            Drumpf would DEPORT him!!

          • Joe in PA

Well, I guess it is TBT (Throw Back Thursday), but that is some great stuff right there. So fabulously dated (bell bottoms, dance moves etc). On a related note (when I was searching for ‘dance moves’), I found this. It was, of course, WAY before my time: Ahem.

          • Octavio

They are provided free to everyone along with a pocket-sized version of the Constitution — both compliments of the Gideons.

    • Kay

Outraged citizens like the ACLU, who thinks using terrorist watch lists to regulate rights is a stupid idea?

  • Lakeview Bob

Better than the NRA getting a full week to cut checks it will brand all of them as being weak on terror who vote against any provision. Just perfect.

  • Jerry Hinnant

They will probably include an Obamacare repeal amendment to it. They haven’t tried that lately.

    • Chucktech

      Always a GOP crowd pleaser…

  • RainbowPhoenix

At the very least we’ll know who to vote out.

  • Todd

Yet another ‘No’ vote …………… at least voters will know the GOPers voting against THE MAJORITY’S desire for improved gun control.
Remember their names in November ….. AND DON’T VOTE FOR THEM.

  • Chuck in NYC

I’m not so sure they’re going to try to get out of this. I think the public thought the GOP looked pretty bad during the sit-in, and it just might be Ryan and his party don’t want to give the entire gun control issue to the Dems. God knows they have very little to crow about to swing moderates to their side in House races while staring at Trump’s becoming, officially and finally, their nominee.

  • WebSlinger
    • That_Looks_Delicious

Flake has turned out to be surprisingly moderate by today’s GOP standards. When he was first running for Senate, I thought he was going to be a Tea Party creature.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

I would laugh out loud if the whole thing wasn’t so tragic.

    • Hank

My response, when I read this was BAH HUMBUG!!! They will NEVER allow the passage of REAL Gun Control Bill!!!

The GOP Caves: A lovely tourist destination with extra-deep piles of bat shit.

    • TrollopeReader

Kentucky, Tennessee, or in the deeper South?

      • Jerry

My guess would be near Mammoth Caves in KY.

  • JaniceInToronto

    Theatrics courtesy of the NRA.

    • TrollopeReader

The Duel Scene in “Hamilton” … sponsored by the NRA .

oh, and irony …here is the JMG ad just to the right of this box:

      • JaniceInToronto

        Oh my.

        • TrollopeReader

in fact, there are TWO of these ads on the right hand side. Arrrgghhh.

          • Jay George

I’ve got ad blocker. I don’t see any of ’em. 🙂

          • Mark

            Me too.

      • Octavio

And I have a right to disarm people playing concealed carry and ram their guns up their ass holes — hard (but not discharged).

  • YakHerder

Is no one else concerned about taking peoples’ rights away based on their inclusion on a secret, unaccountable FBI surveillance list? With no due process at all? It’s not okay to treat people that way, even if we all agree that the “right” that’s being taken away (gun purchases) is bad in general.

I don’t know about you, but I’m old enough to remember when the people (rightly) criticized the exponential growth of the “terror watch lists” as an authoritarian by-product of the Bush II regime.

I hate guns—hate ’em—but this tactic will probably do next to nothing to reduce gun violence (because most people in this country who shoot others were never under FBI surveillance) and it legitimizes one of the worst features of the Bush II regime.

    Very disappointing and discouraging.

    • Octavio

I’v e beeb on so many government agency “watch lists” since I began my career as an openly gay man and a veteran demonstrating against the Vietnam war and getting arrested, watch lists don’t bother me at all.

  • Who cuts checks anymore? The NRA just Direct Deposits into their shills’ accounts. I’m sure the money is already there.

  • EdmondWherever

Yeah. I’m sure they’ll vote. “No”.

  • Piet

Isn’t it interesting that the strict constructionists and the conservatives in general, who otherwise pick apart anything that could possibly infringe on Constitutional rights, are struck blind and stupid when confronted with the words “well regulated” just before “militia” in the Second Amendment. Almost as though they’d been paid for their blindness. Oh, wait . . .

    • Robert Conner

It’s not surprising that people can’t see stuff when they’re being well paid not to see it.

    • Gianni

Seems the Supreme Court ignores “well regulated militia”, too.

  • JT

If the goopers pull some shit on this vote, Dems should walk out and make it very clear what the douchebags are doing.

  • Mike C

I just want them all on the record.

  • William

The NRA should be backing Hillary. They will earn far more money during a Democratic administration than a rethuglican one.

  • JR

Be very afraid of what they attempt to slip inside the bill.

  • DaveW

Due process is code for there will be no way to prove they are terrorists.

Assault weapons ban now! Else we go for ALL guns

    • Tempus Fuggit

Given there’s no definition of “assault weapon” (or “assault rifle”, etc), I think your 2nd option is the correct one.

  • Sporkfighter

Avoiding a vote means the Republicans can’t be accused of voting against gun control.

  • Octavio

Caves. Not caves in? No complete collapse? Just the usual GOP stool tools seeking a way to hide? in caves? I was hoping for the entire GOP to come down with some biblical plague unique only to them. But I’m always accused of reaching for too much. 🙁

  • Michael

How surprised we will all be when the do-nothing Rethuglican Congress votes them all down.

  • MikeinATL

Can’t wait to see how much $, and to whom, the NRA will be doling out…

    • Gianni

That increased whirring sound we hear coming from DC is nothing to get excited about. It’s just the NRA lobbying efforts shifting into Overdrive.

  • JCF
  • Skeptical_Inquirer

The only way we can turn this around is if the NRA AND the gun companies behind them are seen as the same level as scum as KKK members and the WBC.

Also, I really blame a lot of gun owners for this because they keep spike buying every time the NRA howls “Obummer is going to take away your pwecious stash of anti-government fweedom.” Their money funds all this crap so yeah, I think gun owners should be put on the spot. I especially blame the ones who howled against a gun that’s built so not every single kid can shoot themselves or their friend with it.

  • ‘Til Tuesday

The GOP bill (written by the NRA) grants a mere 72 hour (3 day) window for the government to object, which is basically worthless. The bi-partisan bill has a 14 day window. Guess which one the Republicans will allow to come to a vote?

  • B Snow

Maybe I have a bad memory, but I don’t remember all this GOP concern for due process when the Patriot Act was being put into place.

  • Alexodia
