Carpool Karaoke With Broadway Stars [VIDEO]

The Daily Beast recaps:

On Monday night, James Corden hosted a special Tony Awards edition of “Carpool Karaoke” to drum up hype for the show, which he’ll be hosting on CBS the night of June 12. And of course, he had to have Pulitzer Prize-winning, MacArthur Genius Grant-receiving Lin-Manuel Miranda on, whose musical Hamilton set a Tonys record this year with 16 nominations. The likeable pair opened with a medley of “Alexander Hamilton” and “Guns and Ships” from the Hamilton soundtrack, with Corden showing off some impressive rapping skills, before picking up a trio of Broadway stars: the legendary Audra McDonald, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Jane Krakowski.

Stick around for their take on One Day More from Les Miserables. That last note from Audra!

    • Jane kills it during the whole show “She Loves Me” and finishes a love song dance number with splits.

    • Hank

I saw Audra with Seth Rudetsky playing piano on Jan 2 this year in FTL. She was amazing in an intimate theater. I was in 3rd row center. Her husband even came out for a duet and solo song. Truly a TALENTED Actress and Singer!!! Just wish it was a longer show!!!

Most of the 177,000 views were me.

    “Hamilton is selling fine.”

  • Ray Taylor

    One of the best car-pools.

  • WeRTheSquirrels

    Fun! God, I love Audra.

  • delk

Nice way to start a day before all the drama starts.

    • Gustav2

On Broadway the drama is believable.

  • MarkOH

“Which do you like more: theater or money?”
Brilliant. What a great way to start the day

  • Todd Isaac

That was brilliant. One of the best carpool ones. Listened to it several times.

  • popebuck1

    That? Was just plain thrilling.

  • Joe in PA

We just rented “Into The Woods”, the movie. James Cordon was in it and was really good (not that I’m surprised after hearing hime here. 🙂

  • If you can sing Gilbert and Sullivan or Harold Hill you can cover a rap number (I’m not saying you can improv tho).

  • Brian in Valdosta

Let me just say this here: James Corden is making entertainment history with Carpool Karaoke. The man is a force, and I don’t want him to be stopped. Play on, James!!

    • AJ Drew

From “Hollyoaks” to “Doctor Who” to late-night US tee-vee… and the man can sing! (And apparently is enough of a truly nice guy to get so many folks with better things to do to get into that mini-van and play along!)

    • Mike D

As he said on Colbert Monday night, nobody wanted to do it originally. Now I can’t imagine a singer turning it down.

    • Kevin Perez

James Corden needs to be my next husband.

  • Rod Steely

That was one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced!

  • Richard, another Canuck

Loving these Carpool Karaokes! Thanks for posting Joe.

  • tchowski

Nobody puts Audra in the corner.

  • SilasMarner

    LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this!!!

  • MT YVR

See, this is entirely believable as a “it coulda happened”. It’s totally a theatre kids thing. 😉

My god, though. The talent in that vehicle. Oi.

  • DonnaLee

As a person who sucks remembering song lyrics, I kind of hate how easily some people can. I can work at singing, but I just don’t have that kind of retention.

I knew Audra McDonald when she was a little girl, performing at Roger Rocka’s Good Company Music Hall in Fresno, in the early 80’s. Before every show, there was a “Junior Cabaret”, and all the kids wore black pants/skirts and a red shirt with their name on it. Audra was one of them, and her talent was clear even then. She would stay and watch the main stage show while waiting for her parents to come pick her up, and you could see her soaking up everything. I even got to share the stage with her, she was one of the orphans in “Oliver!”. Every time I see her on TV, I am so happy for her success! Fresno girl makes GREAT.

My friends never do this in the car with me. I has a sad.
