OVER THE RAINBOW: DC Gay Men’s Chorus Group Performs On Ukrainian National Television [VIDEO]

Earlier today I reported the grim news that neo-Nazis are planning a “bloodbath” at next week’s Kiev Pride. But now comes something much more encouraging. JMG reader Matt Holland writes:

This morning, on “Breakfast with 1+1”, a national Ukrainian morning show that reaches over 15 million people, Potomac Fever one of the small ensembles from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC, was interviewed and had the honor of being the first openly gay choral group to perform on Ukrainian morning television. Many in the Ukrainian LGBTQ community consider this time be huge! There were technical issues with the translator, but hopefully the message came through loud and clear. They are gay, proud, and spreading the message of equality and tolerance in Ukraine.

Watch below as Potomac Fever performs True Colors and Over The Rainbow.

That is huge. Public perception of LGBT folks in Ukraine is very poor. I hope this popped a few Ukrainian fundie heads.

      You mean Brian Brown?

His head is a big zit. Better wear a pus shield if you’re anywhere nearby.

Yes. It is always good to show off ordinary GLBT people with accomplishments. 1. Sex is not the only thing on our minds 2. We are not all flamer billionaires like Elton John 3. We look like your boring neighbors 4. We hold jobs, take care of children and parents, walk the dog, pay taxes, etc.

The Gay Men’s Chorus of D.C. recently celebrated its 35th anniversary with a concert at the Kennedy Center.

    They’re a national treasure.

    • Joe in PA

I agree, they are amazing. They (well a subset of the entire choir) sang while we all waited on the steps of the Supreme Court. Very moving.

They’ve had an incredibly talented string of Artistic Directors over the years. Their current Director, Dr. Thea Kano, is an amazing amazing woman. Not only does she conduct the D.C. chorus but she also conducts a NYC-based (mixed) chorus — the New York City Master Chorale, which she founded in 2005.

That NYC chorus also performed, along with the D.C. chorus, at the Kennedy Center anniversary concert.

And black & white Converses are the best! I keep several pairs, in varying states of cleanliness and newness, depending on the occasion…

      You GO Kermie!

Remember the phrase “Good-Will Ambassador”? I don’t think it was ever applied to Brian Brown.

I love it when bigots are publicly given the finger.

THIS is how hearts and minds are changed…
these men just…down the road, changed things in Ukraine. Just a little, but if you can change the course of a ship even 1/50th of a degree, you have changed its destination.

I have friends in Ukraine. if anything, its LESS glbt friendly than Russia. Anyone remember that first positive Gay character on TV? the gay soldier on MASH…the first time a lesbian was depicted in a good way, and how “WOW!” you felt? well…lots of GLBT people felt that in ukraine today 🙂 🙂 🙂

You are beautiful in every single way!

    Coats and Keds. Kewl.

  • James

    Great!

Somewhat underwhelmed by the singing, though.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Really? You just had to, didn’t you.

      • James

        It just wasn’t that great.

  • Hank

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC is 10 times the size, than the group, who sang above. I have seen them many times and they are a fantastic group of singers.

  • 2patricius2

“Don’t be afraid….” Ah, the courage that so many LGBT people are showing around the world despite the hatred and violence from some right wing religious groups.

  • Jmdintpa

This is great and all but I do hope they are careful in there movements. Such a public display has probably sent several neo – nazi repressed gays over the cliff with rage.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

Wishful thinking: Next up, the DC Cowboys dance troupe! (Always a favorite of mine.)

  • Jay George

    Rockin’ those Chucks. 🙂

Stay safe, guys. You’re doing good work…
