KENTUCKY: Openly Gay Lexington Mayor Wins US Senate Primary, Will Face Rand Paul In November

From the Lexington Herald Leader:

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul will face Tuesday’s Democratic primary winner, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, in the November general election. Both won easily Tuesday. Paul, a first-term senator and former presidential hopeful, beat two little-known challengers in the Republican primary in a landslide victory. Gray, a two-term mayor, was able to turn back six challengers in a crowded field of Democratic candidates.

Gray, 62, faces an uphill battle to unseat the well-known incumbent in a state that has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since Wendell Ford, political observers said this week. Ford left office in 1998. The Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg and Gonzales Political Report, two non-partisan online newsletters, have Paul, 53, easily winning the race. But Gray has led Paul in fundraising, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

If successful, Gray would become the second openly gay member of the US Senate after Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin. You may recall that last year Rand Paul succeeded in pushing through a Kentucky rule change which allowed him to simultaneously run for the Senate and the presidency.
