Family Research Council Hater Travis Weber Won’t Say Which Bathroom Trans People Should Use [VIDEO]

Last night Family Research Council hater Travis Weber appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball, where he flailed and failed to answer when host Chris Matthews repeatedly asked him which bathroom trans activist Jennifer Boylan should use. Media Matters has the transcript:

CHRIS MATTHEWS (HOST): Travis, tell Jenny what bathroom she should use.

MATTHEWS: Which one should she use?

WEBER: Yeah, I mean I’m not sure, um —

MATTHEWS: Well just answer that question.

WEBER: I think people should be —

MATTHEWS: She said she would not be comfortable or not cause such problem if she walked into a men’s room. Should she walk into a men’s room?

WEBER: I think we can do things the way we’ve done them for decades, and people could use bathrooms according to biological sex with specific accommodation made for people who have a genuine issue. If we look at the North Carolina law, it made an accommodation. People are not happy with that, however. And now the Obama administration —

MATTHEWS: Let’s just talk about transgender people. What should a transgender person who identifies as a woman do? What bathroom should they go to? Just keep it simple.

WEBER: Yeah well there’s an issue of privacy concerns.

MATTHEWS: See no, you can’t answer the question, can you? What should they do?

WEBER: They can use the bathroom of their biological sex, except when there’s a genuine issue and an accommodation can be made.

Boylan is a regular on I Am Cait and she states her case quite eloquently.

  • DN

The honest truth is that he doesn’t think trans people should use any bathroom because he doesn’t think they have a right to live.

    • S1AMER

    • tst

Caytlin Jenner supports FRC and Ted Cruz. If anyone doesn’t have a right to live in her mind that’s gay people.

      • given the recent reports about her wanting to de-transition I wonder if she isn’t just a rich transvestite who took it a bit far. . . . the whole thing is just an unfortunate hot mess.

        • b

Your wron. These are legitimate people who deserve dignity. Where do you get off? When has a trans woman ever harmed anyone by going into the bathroom they want to? No hot mess, hot christians wanting a mess. They don’t get that.

          • I don’t think I said anything about the bathroom, and yes, she is a hot christian republican mess.

          • Acronym Jim

Personally, I want to hear more about this boyfriend of yours, Wron.

          • medaka

          • BudClark

BRAVO! IMHO, Jenner was queened-out when “she” was still a “man.”

          • RaygunsGoZap

Andrea Rae = translady. She has plenty of room to speak and share her opinion on this issue and the personalities involved. Cait Jenner is an asshole and a shitshow. I could poop on a pile of garbage fling that around my home and the result would be less of a mess and way more dignified than Ms. Jenner.

        • Snarkaholic

Maybe it’s finally beginning to sink into the Jenner jerk’s minuscule brain how hated ALL trans people are…and, after reading stacks of hate mail, the thought of de-transitioning is starting to sound inviting.

        • NancyP

Could be. At any rate, she’s no longer being treated as a former Olympic winning athlete special snowflake by everybody. White athletes don’t generally offend people much, so she has NO EXPERIENCE in being reviled by the public, or for that matter, requiring a bodyguard for her own safety.

        • Alexodia
      • DN

For the life of me, I’ll never understand why society has gravitated towards her instead of Laverne Cox.

        • Laverne, Janet Mock, Jen Richards, hell even Bailey Jay is a much better ambassador. Jenner is the worst lurch that could have crawled out of the woodwork to represent we trans.

        • Exatron

Laverne is normal while Jenner is an attention whore. And you know how much the media loves attention whores.

          • Steverino

            Meet the Kardashians.

            ‘Nuff said?

          • Chucktech

‘Nuff said, indeed, but there would be no Kardashians if brain dead American Vox Populi didn’t watch it.

          • B Snow

And yet we’re all still surprised Trump is doing so well. It should have been obvious. 🙁

          • Acronym Jim

Indeed. The thing I was most surprised about Jenner’s transition, is that she decided not to spell Caitlyn with a “K.”

        • tst

Laverne Cox is ex-gay who is “dating only straight men”.

          • Isn’t it all just semantics at some point?

          • RaygunsGoZap

            I think you’re using “ex-gay” disingenuously.

        • Bj Lincoln

Because Jenner is a Republican and a media whore. Maybe it’s a good thing she like the GOP. They might sympathize with her.
Ha ha ha ha ! The GOP sympathize! Ha ha ha ha never going to happen. Sympathy and empathy are not permitted by the GOP.

          • Acronym Jim

In the upcoming election, let’s hope apathy is.

        • B Snow

The appeal of ANY Kardashian is beyond understanding.

        • BostonDotTom

The media is not terribly interested in the lives of women of color for the most part. LGBT women of color have even less visibility.

      • April

Jenner knows her money and celebrity will protect her from bias.

        • Todd20036

          Actually it might not

    • Piercedchrlz

Having no discernable balls, which bathroom does HE use?

    • If these nutcases were to visit and site (and this is NOT a plug) for it – I have posted images of women and challenged all visitors to identify them as straight, lesbian and transgendered. My friends have failed, so in a women’s bathroom/toilets it would be impossible to recognize a transgendered female.

      • the irreverent student paper at one of my schools had a similar picture essay, “what type of Asian-American is this?” with photos of two dozen actual students of some sort of what we here in this country call “Asian.” it was very amusing, esp given that at this school there were a very large number of Asian-American students, staff and profs. i remember a funny night with one of our Korean drinking buddies, where he drunkenly boasted that he’s score better than i would (mixed race af-am/white) or my white partner.

i don’t think any of us did better than three right. i have no doubt most people would fail a similar test of “cis or trans?”

    • Gigi

Jennifer hit the nail on the head when she exposed the real reason behind this assault on trans people — now that same-sex couples can legally marry countrywide the haters need a new scapegoat. Mostly to fundraise to pay for their exorbitant salaries and make them seem relevant to their fellow knuckledraggers.

      • David Walker

Do we think someone gets his pink slip Monday? Or a re-indoctrination lecture? At least he did one thing right…any commercial news segment is only so long; if you can keep from folding, the segment will be over. OTOH, the lovely Tony PerKKKins has a new persecutor to rail against. Matthews clearly hates xns.

      • Paula

Truth!! I am glad that somebody finally said that on national TV. They needed someone new to hate and the Transgender community was an easy target.

      • Nic Peterson

So true Gigi. This guy also represents a change in direction as far as FRC hiring goes. He doesn’t appear to be part of the Liberty U by way of home schooling set. He’s a Georgetown Law grad, former military officer and until recently was an associate at law firm doing litigation work. The lawyer in him won’t allow for an answer to the question because he knows that the case is lost at that point. He is being paid to keep the issue alive as a pain point for conservatives, keep the base energized for November and keep the donations coming in.

He looks normal, in a way that Tony and Josh in particular did not. He doesn’t have the fire in his eyes and seems a bit uncomfortable with the visibility. Perhaps he knows that the Internet never forgets.

      • jonfromcalifornia

Exactly right! These cretins don’t give two hoots about “public safety”. It’s just a means to get back at the LGBT community for having the right to marry.

    • Gerry Fisher

Or almost equally evil, trans people are irrelevant. They’re just pawns in some political game he’s playing, in his never ending need to shore up his pathetic ego by being “right.”

Normally I despise Matthews for the way he talks over his guests but it was not only nice to see this twerp get his ass handed to him, but nice to see that he obviously knew he was getting his ass handed to him.

But imagine how much more effective it would have been to let the man continue with his answers and 1) get nowhere or 2) concede.

      • Robincho

  • lymis

They want to live in a world where there simply aren’t any transgender people. So they want rules that only apply to cisgender people and just flatly exclude trans people.

I fully support people who, for whatever reasons, transition and still look like “a man in a dress” or “a woman in men’s clothes.” Their lives and needs are just as valid as anyone else’s. But it’s the conversations like this one that just prove these people have no clue what the hell they’re talking about, because there are plenty of trans people who are visually indistinguishable from a cisgender person with the same gender identity.

It really won’t be until they recognize that they are legally requiring transmen, in all their hairy male glory to use the ladies’ room that this is going to start to sink in.

Because, frankly, while it may short out their tiny bigoted brains that they’re demanding that Jenny Boylan use the men’s room, they won’t see that as a threat to their male egos or safety. But let’s talk Buck Angel.

    • everyone knows trans men do not exist, as they destroy the argument. . . .

    • fuow

The mother-fucking christers are totally freaked out by anyone who doesn’t conform to their made up system of male/female.

      • lymis

And since they see gay and lesbian people as violating that system just as much as trans people, that’s why we are all in this together. Because they sure as hell lump us all together.

        • Chucktech

I think christers smugly and self-righteously see trans people in a lower circle of hell than mere gay people. While we’re both hellbound, they can at least wrap their god addled heads around gay. Transgender, when combined with their fear, loathing and self-indulgent piety, just completely discombobulates their bigoted, god-infused world view.

          • JulieBL

I found this heartening. Not that anyone here will like it, and his fellow Baptists won’t listen. (NO, I am NOT a Baptist!!!)

          • B Snow

Wow. This needs to be shared SO MUCH!!

Extraordinary, and even the first sentence sets him apart from almost all other religious conservatives: “I don’t know much about transgender issues, but I’m trying to learn.” A pastor who is willing to admit he doesn’t have all the answers just because he reads the bible. A religious Christian who understands that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people actually exist.

I hope Baptists (and other religious conservatives) take time to read it, but they’ll probably just dismiss him as “not a real Christian”. 🙁

          • JulieBL

Yes, I thought it was pretty extraordinary. To have a pastor quoting scientists, and the most current scientific knowledge on gender identity… mind blown.

          • Chucktech

Wait a minute… This guy can’t be a Baptist, either. He’s enlisting the help of a medical professional and scientist in order to come to an educated and informed opinion.

            From the article:

“This last point in particular raises the largest of theological questions. If Christians really believe every person is created in the image of God, how can we damn a baby who comes from the womb with gender dysphoria?”

The fact that he even acknowledges such a thing as gender dysphoria is astoundingly encouraging evolution.

          • NancyP

I would bet that this website is American (Northern) Baptist, not Southern Baptist. Another article covers Jimmy Carter, and he gave the SBC the heave-ho a long long time ago. Northern Baptist congregations set their own membership, theology, policies, and many have been LGBT-friendly for many years. Southern Baptist churches are tightly controlled by the SBC central administration, which enforces adherence to policies.

      • billbear1961

Reason and the modern WORLD freak them out, because they can’t control EITHER, which is why they hate BOTH.

    • lymis

The problem is that it really comes down to “I don’t want to notice trans people” as in “I don’t want to be uncomfortable.” It’s the modern variation of “being okay with homosexuals as long as they stay in the closet.”

Even the bigots probably don’t understand what they’re asking for, because they haven’t given it enough thought to get there, but what they really want is for trans people who can “pass” to quietly use the restroom for their gender identity and for trans people who can’t to use the restroom for their birth gender – and they themselves want to be the arbiter of who does and doesn’t “pass.” They want a legally mandated closet, and they want it to have legal teeth – in that “if we catch you, you’ll be punished” to make sure that trans people not only pass but are quiet about it.

They don’t want Jenny Boylan in the men’s room or Buck Angel in the ladies’ room, but they don’t want to have to think about it.

      • ColdCountry

      • billbear1961

Best SHARP summary I’ve seen of what they really want, of how their “minds” work.

        • Mike__in_Houston

Exactly. You beat me to it.

      • b

Cops don’t want it. They don’t want to be checking genitals. It’s disgusting. North Carolina should have asked the cops who have to enforce their weird conservative laws.

        • David Walker

FWIW, cops tend to be the last to be consulted. This is particularly true when approving assault weapons for street use.

    • billbear1961

“It really won’t be until they recognize that they are legally requiring transmen, in all their hairy male glory to use the ladies’ room that this is going to start to sink in.”

So many software engineers have been found dead in their shower months later, following those very directions.

      • David Gervais

I thought their version went “Lie, work self into a lather, ask for money, repeat”.

        • B Snow

Or the bumper sticker I saw a few weeks ago: “Sin, Repent, Repeat.”

    Mr. Matthews, THANK YOU!

    This is how it’s DONE!

Please–PLEASE–do it more often, and we may yet SAVE this REPUBLIC!!

  • JT

Meatheads like this should only use their own bathroom.

  • Charlie 2001

I think some developer should develop a game called “North Carolina Bathroom Police” where you are given pictures of people and sort where they should go. And let me say that going to the bathroom is a basic human right. After all – Everybody Poops.

    • billbear1961

I’ve never told you how much I like that avatar, Charlie!

    • Jimmie Z

Love the graphic. Here’s another — but there is currently no (D) equivalent.

  • Mark

Inquiring minds want to know who will be doing the genital check at church? I doubt there will be any volunteers….but there damned well better be “checkers” at Target! /s

    • David Gervais

Based on the constant news stories about them, the pastors, ministers, priests et al from the usual suspects will be happy to volunteer to do the bathroom checks at the boys’ room. They will probably “protect privacy” by using large closets in which the inspections will be conducted.

  • Ninja0980

He couldn’t answer the question because like with LGB folks, Weber can’t admit out loud that they simply want trans people dead.

    • Snarkaholic

He was probably thinking that he’d love for Jen to use the men’s room…so the guys in there could beat the crap out of her.

  • Mike in Texas

  • Blobby

to be honest, i’m more surprised he didn’t say they should hold it in until they get home.

    • Gustav2

A version of: “I don’t care what you do in the privacy of your own home, I just don’t want to see it in public.” They used that for decades on LGB’s like walking down the street was having sex in public.

  • Todd

Jenny is well spoken and Travis is a nervous sidestepping Mess

  • bkmn

Remember that this is an issue that the right manufactured, since they can’t bully the LGB groups of LBGT the way they used to. They are using it to motivate their base this election.

    • B Snow

I’m hoping the wind will be out of their sails by November. “Remember all that bathroom stuff six months ago?” doesn’t give the same push.

      • bkmn

I did hear commentators on NPR yesterday say that the issue is more likely to motivate people that vote Democratic than those that vote Rethug, since the “religious” fools would have voted GOP anyway.

        • B Snow

          I hope that’s true!

          • BudClark

WHY* can’t our elections be about the glaringly OBVIOUS NEEDS of our country, instead of IRRATIONAL HATRED of the “different?”

          • B Snow

Because that would require us all to be grownups. Oh, and some people do consider irrational hatred of the different to be an obvious need. They need to hate SOMEONE or their lives have no meaning.

  • Gigi

The University of Toronto incident that Weber used to support his pisiform had nothing to do with trans issues. The dorm bathrooms were co-ed and some pervy male student was caught videotaping girls while they peed and showered. I’d say nice try, but it really wasn’t.

    • B Snow

It’s just so much easier to bully trans people than it is to teach straight men not to assault women.

  • Baltimatt

What “accommodation” did the North Carolina law make? I’m not aware of any.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

They have some clause for those who have had surgery.
However, not every one can afford such surgery nor is it even wanted or desirable in many cases.

      • Baltimatt

        I don’t recall seeing that in HB2.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

I am just quoting something I heard McCrory argue once. LOL – Not really a good source.

          • Baltimatt

As far as I know, restroom use is according to the sex on one’s birth certificate.

          • Dreaming Vertebrate

I’ll see if I can track this down.

          • Baltimatt

      • lymis

Actually, HB2 is very clear that it’s about the gender on your birth certificate. Surgery wouldn’t change that.

Unless of course, North Carolina was open to making it straightforward to get a reissued birth certificate with the corrected gender on it, but if that was the case, they’d probably have mentioned it before now, or gosh, maybe even put it in the law.

    • RobertInSF

I searched the bill for ‘accomodate’ and found that the transgender person can request and the school may arrange single-person service areas for their use…

      • Baltimatt

        Thanks, Robert

  • bryan

They cannot answer the questions : How will these laws be enforced ? Should a trans woman go into a man’s bathroom ? They can’t answer. And that reveals the true answer… These laws are about animus towards the LBGT community.

  • KnownDonorDad

He just doesn’t want her to EXIST.

    • SoCalGal20

Exactly. They just want icky trans people to go away.

  • SoCalGal20

They’ve got nothing. And Jenny got it absolutely right that now that they don’t have gays and lesbians to pick on and scapegoat, they’re using trans people. I also love how she brought up her conservative evangelical mother who apparently accepts her for who she is.

Also, I appreciate that Chris Matthews got right to the ridiculousness of issue and would not let that guy off the hook.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

It was rather fun watching the ignorant little worm squirm on the hook.
What a miserable, ignorant little weaselpecker!

      • SoCalGal20

        Yes it was!

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

It’s amazing he has invested all this energy in trampling on trans people, but does not have any answer for a basic question like this. To invert Hanlon’s razor, “Never attribute to stupidity that which is more simply explained by malice and/or animus. “

    • hudson11

Thanks- I just learned something new- I had to look up Hanlon’s razor. That in turn led me to look up a few other things. it often ends up being a rabbit’s hole for me.

      • B Snow

The black hole that is Wikipedia. 🙂 Don’t ever go to TV Tropes; that’s even worse. I spent about 10 hours there when I first learned about it.

    • Chucktech

And, while stupidity certainly runs amok with the RW Jeezy crowd, this bathroom ruse is clearly fueled by malice and animus.

  • BeanToes

Chris Matthew’s constant interrupting usually drives me nuts, but last night I was happy to see him cross-examine that bigot, who of course, wouldn’t answer the question. Special accommodations sure sounds like Separate but Equal to me.

This directive provides guidance to school districts so they won’t get sued. I don’t understand the freak-out.

  • 2patricius2

Reminds me of the cartoon of the dog that walks into a bank and says to the teller: “I just left a deposit in the lobby.” Wonder if he thinks trans people should just walk into the lobby of the Family Research Council and leave deposits in their lobby. After all, the way he talks about trans people, he seems to think they are just dogs, not real people with needs like every other human person.

    • Chucktech

(Apologies to Frank Zappa) So, the teller who was talking to the dog looked at the dog and said, sort of staring in disbelief, “You can’t say that!”

  • BobSF_94117

See no, you can’t answer the question, can you?

Not with you interrupting and yelling all the time. (Not that he’d have an answer anyway, but I HATE Matthews’ “style”.)

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Have to agree. I find Matthews wants to listen to Matthews rather than his guests.

      • BobSF_94117

I wonder if any of them have ever just stopped talking, sat back, and let him peter out. Which would take a while, of course.

        • Chucktech

“Oh, look, we’re out of time.”

        • lymis

Or, alternatively, they might, you know, answer the question.

          • BobSF_94117

He yells and interrupts whether people answer or not. At least he used to. I haven’t watched in years.

    • RobertInSF

I disagree….the more the ‘moderators’ or hosts allow a bullshit answer to continue on, even for a simple question that can be answered with a basic yes/no, male/female, one word response, then the more the respondent can dodge, obfuscate, and reframe the issue, and reject the premise of the question (thanks for educating me on that concept, West Wing!).

See my response to Jean-Marc earlier in the thread.

      • BobSF_94117

I have no problem with repeating questions, pointing out obfuscation, ignoring attempts to change topic. Tough interviewers are like a dog with a bone, not a barking loon like Matthews.

  • PhallicMetaphor

I feel he was groping for “I don’t believe they should be out in public or exist” but couldn’t find the wording.
    He’s an ass hat

    • marshlc

Yes, this. Trying to find a way to say what he so obviously thinks, that won’t get him in trouble.

  • Cuberly

Gee, is FRC, once again, attempting to exploit the ignorant and easily enraged for deceptive purposes?

One thing’s for sure, just as McCrory fumbles the reality and details when he’s interviewed, the FRC have not thought this all the way through. This time they REALLY have to depend on the ignorance of their followers. And even then, they’re most likely praying that none of them tune in when an FRC spokesperson is interviewed. Cuz they fail.

    • Chucktech

FRC to ignorant followers: “Don’t let us down, now, we really need your ignorance and hate to shine through…”

      • Cuberly

To followers….here hold still while we fleece you…

These mythology addicted Christian zealots are flailing for another wedge issue for an election.

That is ALL this is about. Once again, this was never an issue until they INVENTED IT.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Indeed, a solution in search of a problem.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

First off, hey Chris Matthews, shut the fuck up long enough to let someone get a word in.

Secondly, Travis, sweety, Trans people exist, as do gays. lesbians, bisexuals, etc……and they need to relieve themselves just like everyone else. Oh, and we’re not going away, deal with it.

For this simple question, Which bathroom?, there is only one answer: men’s room, or women’s room….the respondent has to be able to apply their supposedly faultless logic and principle, and state, what is to them is intended to be a clear, no questions asked, no doubt about it, answer….

But they can’t answer…they are afraid of revealing the lack of substance, the lack of thought, the lack of empathy really, and showing their ever-present bigotry and fear.

So by insisting on a simple answer to a simple question, the host/moderator clears up the issue of the proponents lack of integrity.

And if played right, the moderator doesn’t come off looking like a jerk, if they just play up the aspect that the proponent presents the issue as so black and white, yes can’t respond to a black and white question with a simple black and white answer…so the moderator is just confused, or perplexed, or surprised, and then left wondering out loud for the audience and the proponent to hear that maybe the issue isn’t so black and white to the proponent as they would make it seem.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

I think you misconstrued my post. I’m not saying Chris should not push and push hard for answers, non-existent god knows I have that complaint with CNN all the time. No, my complaint is that he’s to into listening to his own voice. It’s like watching a cat in catnip while on adderall…….that or a chihuahua that just won’t shut up.

        • RobertInSF

Perhaps I was focused on a single aspect of your comment. I just hate the way some (most?) hosts/moderators allow the gish gallop or deliberate divergence from the simple question asked….sorry if it came off too much on the personal side or accusatory in tone. I just relish in the occasional call out that we get to see so rarely, I over compensated perhaps in defending it without paying attention to full nature of your comment.

          For reference:

    • lymis

He gave the idiot plenty of chances to answer the question. He repeatedly said things like “before we move on to that, please answer the question.” It was a simple question – where should Boylan pee – which Weber tried to dodge. He shouldn’t BE allowed to slip past that question before having his say on why his bigotry is justified.

  • Cackalaquiano

    Boylan said it perfectly:
“If we would all just open our hearts and treat each other with the kindness and dignity we all deserve.”
This. It’s so basic. You don’t have to understand what it is to be transgender (or gay, or a woman, or a person of color, or whatever it is that you’re not). You don’t have to “get it” – just be open to another person’s experience of reality being different from your own, accept that it’s valid, and respect that. We could get over so much if we’d just start there.

    • Snarkaholic

But religion, which has always used fear and guilt to manipulate people, is designed to create a huge void between “we the chosen” and “all those OTHERS, the hell-bound filthy heathens”. It’s what keeps the money rolling in.

      • lymis

But, do please note that the person Boylan was quoting was a devoutly religious evangelical using her religion to justify why she needed to be loving, compassionate, and open-minded, who was using her own religion to broaden her empathy.

I won’t argue that a huge percentage of what goes in the name of religion these days is vile, but please don’t pretend that all of it is.

      • BudClark

I doubt that disabled veterans who need prosthetics repaired or replaced, or life-saving Agent Orange or cancer treatments, much care who poops and pees where.

  • TampaZeke

The MSN homepage yesterday had a headline “OBAMA WANTS GROWN MEN IN LITTLE GIRLS’ BATHROOMS” written by the Federalist. The comments section was absolutely VILE with ignorance and hate.

They’ve been posting a lot of extreme right wing propaganda on their front pages lately.

Where is that left wing liberal media bias I keep hearing so much about? MSN is becoming indistinguishable from Fox News.

    • you’re just noticing now, that there is no actual mainstream liberal media? dood, it’s been like this since before boosh.

      • TampaZeke

Nah. I just got caught in Poe’s Law.

I should have made my sarcasm more evident.

    • fuzzybits

I’ve made the mistake a few times of scrolling down to read comments on MSN homepage. Way big mistake.

The troll factor on this board has gone up 150% – and I mean actual trolls not what some of you can’t help yourselves from doing – I assume the sudden influx of idiots trying to hurt our feelings is a good sign that this is about done. Last year when marriage passed they couldn’t shut up all summer about how we were going to start marrying lamps and dogs, too. Soooooo, 2017 is going to great, is what I’m saying.

  • Clive Johnson

A familiar pattern: Expose the right-winger to his internal contradictions, which he cannot face, and watch him shift and turn, trying to evade the logical demand that he appreciate an X and a NOT-X both exist in his mind. But again, he can’t see it.
That final mental step of realizing that one thing will exclude another, and vice versa, is beyond him.

In fact, that systematic error is a main reason why he ended up being a right-winger in the first place. And…the inability to follow reason is the sufficient explanation of why they’re getting slaughtered in the courts, where such errors are usually readily spotted. Even when their cultural influence–a house on fire that is collapsing around them–it’s STILL not sufficient to prompt any improvement in thinking, any deeper self-criticism, any greater self-honesty, any more sophisticated understanding or use of language.

The entire lifeworld of the religious right is predicated on a variety of different expressions of the unarticulated mind-controlling syllogism of: X is a traditional cultural belief or practice, X must therefore be true or good or essential for society. It’s great to see how many more people and institutions are seeing through this b.s.

  • marshlc

I would say that his honest answer to “What should they do?”, the one he’d like to give if he could figure out how to word it, would be “Not be trans”.

  • Irish856

I am surprised his answer was just not…

  • Lakeview Bob

Stupid fucking asshole. I hate myself for looking at this on a beautiful Saturday morning. I’m stupid too.

  • SFBruce

Someone might videotape in a public restroom? Really? That’s the best he can do? Why not just ban all videotaping and pictures taking in locker rooms and public rest rooms? Isn’t that an obvious privacy protecting measure no matter what the genders of the people involved? This happens to be a policy my YMCA has had for years now.

It’s hard to remember a bigger fuss made about so little.

    • lymis

And note that it was a cisgender male videotaping in the girl’s locker room – so the trans issue doesn’t even apply. Which is the point about 90% of their bullshit.

      • B Snow

They admit the reason for these laws is to stop cisgender men from assaulting women/girls in restrooms. What they can’t explain is how penalizing transgender women is going to solve that problem.

  • bob

And there you go ! None of these idiots can answer that question , but they keep stirring up the uneducated religious fanatics.

  • tomfromthenews

Open hearts? Kindness? She might as well be speaking Greek to that guy.

  • shellback

“Family Research Council Hater Travis Weber Won’t Say Which Bathroom Trans People Should Use”
How about they use the one they’ve always used before this became a non-existent issue.

  • Sporkfighter

You know, if we just all chilled out for a couple of years and let people figure out who they were and what they need, we’d develop some new social norms and everything would be fine.

Everyone has thoughts that creep them out. So what? So Auntie Bella is a bit creeped out over not knowing when or if a transwoman might someday share a bathroom with her. If she takes a breath, pees, and moves on, she’ll get over it and be a better person for it. Getting past a personal prejudice is a form of personal growth, and people who do it feel better about themselves. Just look out in the world . . .. who looks happier, the allies at the pro-LGBT rallies or the moral fossils at the anti- rallies?

    • BudClark

Southern women of a certain age were ALWAYS more accepting of women who were different:

      Me: ” Mother, she’s a LESBIAN!”

Mother: “Of course she is, son, but we don’t talk about that in polite company. Miss X and Miss Y are ‘so devoted to one another’.”

      • BudClark

Gay men, OTOH … WHOOSH! Lynch ’em! Burn ’em at the stake! Run ’em out of town!

  • Bryan

OMG Travis, “Panic At the Bathroom!”

He looked nervous and stiff in that clip.

    • David Walker

He’s not used to being asked questions until he answers. The hot lights made him forget his talking points. Tony woulda been there himself except he was on potty patrol at the Target.

  • Igby

“All lies and jest. Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest”

This has to be the biggest, non-issue ever.

  • LarryChemEngr

Finally, someone called them out on their stupid bullshit directly. They NEVER answer this question because they don’t care about accommodating trans people. They are just a bunch of pandering, pin-headed partisan hacks, trying to stir up their illiterate, inarticulate base for political points.

  • Dean Cameron

Young Travis seems to be a disadvantage here.
He is peddling ideas and notions, while Jennifer and Chris are more concerned with realities.

    • Sporkfighter

There’s always been a limited market for snake oil, but it’s lucrative for those who can master (and stomach) selling it to the rubes.

  • Guys like Weber never say what they really want to say: “There just shouldn’t be any transgender people!! They give me the heebie jeebies!! Why can’t we just pretend they don’t exist like our grandparents did?”

    • studd55

That’s what he meant when he said he wants it like it “used” to be

    • zhera

Exactly. It’s not about bathrooms. It never was. Just like it never was about drinking fountains, marriage, or adoption.

  • djcoastermark

Just more baptist evanevilcal gobbledeegoop, never give a true response. avoid avoid avoid.

  • Michael Hampton

Just like they don’t want to say that women who get abortions should be put in jail. Their rhetoric says ABORTION IS MURDER! But when you ask them if a young girl should be put in prison for the rest of her life for getting an abortion, they can’t react. This is the same. They scream NO MEN IN LADIES BATHROOMS and yet when you show them a specific person and ask where they should go to the bathroom, they suddenly clam up. It just goes to show you that even they know their rhetoric goes too far.

    • lymis

I’d say rather that they’re confronted by the fact that their rhetoric doesn’t actually match reality.

  • studd55

He has no problem wearing a transman haircut.

He should be wearing a proper Christian haircut.×201.jpg

  • well that was just plain embarrassing. that’s their problem. they have meaningless buzz-terms that they use, over and over again, without actually saying anything.

  • grada3784

Pecker Checker needed. Ladies restroom, first floor.

    • B Snow

This. We need to keep asking how they’re going to enforce the law, who they’re going to employ to peer at the privates of every woman entering a public restroom.

  • James

I think it’s pretty clear what he’s saying: if nobody can tell you’re trans, then you’re fine. Otherwise, you need a “special accomodation.”

    • Partly. But y’know what’s also happening? Now with all the anti-trans hysteria, now they’re going after cisgender women who look too ‘butch’ and men who look too effeminate and basically anybody who doesn’t satisfy the bigots’ particular narrow-minded views as to how someone is allowed to look and act in public.

You’re right though: They keep trying to use ‘privacy’ and ‘safety’ when the only person seeing those violated by this mob incitement are the transgender people who just want to pee and not to be singled out for discrimination.

  • As it seems to me, the transphobes simply want transgender people not to exist. Or, if they exist, to be pretty much purely a theoretical construct and therefore not deserving of simple human dignity or respect. To be invisible, unseen, and unnoticed. If noticed, to disappear as quickly as possible and for the bigot, ideally in a posture of shame and fear.

They’ve been doing it to gay and lesbian people for a couple generations now. Now with gays and lesbians achieving rather widespread social acceptance, the sex-and-gender bigots need a new target, a more vulnerable group — the transgender people — and that’s what’s happening.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

It amuses me that people who are still 80 years behind society are attempting to comment on social advances in 2016.
Most of them still can’t figure out how or why
women got the right to vote, or whatever happened to the right to define
certain people as just 3/5 of a person.

Start there, THEN if you show capacity for understanding we will discuss current events.

    • I firmly believe that a lot of the misogyny comes from people who still haven’t absorbed the notion that women are human beings deserving of full equality. I mean, the patriarchy and paternalism are practically baked into the fundamentalist culture.

And yeah, it’s only step sideways to see how much of their racial bigotry is because some of ’em still think some humans are supposed to be slaves. If not consciously, then unconsciously.

  • Unecessary fear mongering from a few people that find the whole situation “icky”. Any school boy that dresses up or tries to identify as a girl just so he could perve inside a girls locker room will surely be exposed. What is there to perve on anyway? It’s not like people walk around naked in public toilets.
