The Hill: Even His Supporters Loathe Ted Cruz

In the post below this one, Politico expounds on why Ted Cruz is so universally disliked, even by those who support his campaign. Similarly fueled by yesterday’s comments by John Boehner, The Hill today weighs in with a blistering take on the same topic. An excerpt:

In the past eight years, no one has captivated the realistic hopes of conservative constitutionalists the way that Cruz has in this election. On every single issue of importance to conservatives, Cruz is right. He is a walking, living, breathing Supreme Court dissent, masterfully articulated and extensively annotated on paper.

Then, he opens his mouth. And people scream. They run for the exits as if their hair is on fire. They want to take a shower.

Even hardcore conservatives still stewing over the shabby defenestration of Robert Bork find Cruz cloying and unctuous. Leading conservatives who publicly support Cruz’s presidential campaign groan in private when he starts talking.

Cruz may entertain himself by impersonating characters from “The Simpsons,” but it is hard to get out of your mind that Cruz just might, in fact, be Mr. Burns, with those evil snake eyes and the sharp, downward curved beak. Heartless, robotic, ever-calculating, willing to do anything to maximize profits at his nuclear power plant.

“Who is that firebrand, Smithers?” you can almost hear Cruz inquire of a top campaign staffer as he suspiciously eyes Trump and taps his fingertips together. Or, maybe he is the unholy spawn of Count Dracula and “The Penguin” from Batman. So, what, exactly, is the problem with Cruz? Why is he so terrible?

For starters, his face and natural demeanor appear bionically opposed to a sunny disposition. The forced smiles only make him look more demonic. And because his facial contortions are so clearly faked, he always looks like he must be lying. “Lyin’ Ted,” you might say.

There’s much more at the link.

Now he is losing big everyone has the courage to say what we all have been posting here since he was elected to the Senate.

    • Todd20036

Yeah, but he could still win. He’s evil enough that he’d have no problem accepting the nod if it means he has fewer pledged delegates than Trump

      • bkmn

He believes it is Dog’s will.

        • Gustav2

He can’t win, even with Dog’s blessing.

Duane Chapman is a kingmaker? Who knew?

      • Blake Jordan

But why would the RNC choose him, he is not an advantage over drumpf?

They would have better luck picking someone who was not one of he original 17 of this 2016 nomination run.

      • popebuck1

He’s been doing mysterious, slimy things behind the scenes regarding the delegates. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he mounts some kind of big procedural coup attempt at the convention.

        • Gene

agreed…but, if he does, even I will think “dirty pool” and Trumps supporters will rightly be able to say “wont more states, won more votes, why is he not the nominee?” and will stay home in droves. either way, rethuglican party is imploding.
          I like that!
(of the two though…Cruz is WAYYYY scarier than trump..way, way, wayyyy worse)

          • popebuck1

Oh, I never said he had any chance of succeeding. But wouldn’t that be hilarious if he somehow pulled it off, and was left as the nominee once the smoke cleared? The one person they want as the nominee even LESS than Trump?

Either way, Cruz isn’t going to go away quietly no matter what happens. Whoever ends up as the actual nominee (probably Trump, let’s face it, but who knows?), Cruz will be right there to sabotage and undercut him as loudly and publicly as possible, just so he can say “I told you so” and set himself up for Cruz 2020. And that prospect makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

    • Gerry Fisher

Makes you wonder where everyone has been for the past six years or so. Did they not notice this? Did they think it would dissipate after he got elected President? Did they think they could control him once he got in there? Very, very careless politics (and we’ve seen the results of this kind of politics in places like Kansas, Louisiana, and Wisconsin).

      • popebuck1

They’ve been very, very busy hysterically keeping Obama from getting anything accomplished. That’s a full-time job in itself.

      • Gustav2

They have been afraid of the Tea Party wing or the Freedom Caucus in the House. They are afraid of being primaried.

    • D. J.

He had to establish his base camp in one of the batshit crazy states to get into the Senate. Thanks to gerrymandering they know where to move to and which offices they have the best statistical chances to win.
One of the very few times it didn’t work was Allen West in Florida. There was a ton of news coverage about how unexpected and surprising West’s loss was.

Never heard of that secondary meaning. My fave usage of the word is in the phrase ‘The second defenestration of Prague”.

        • Oscarlating Wildely

Might one note that it was a venerable and time honored way of getting rid of political and theological pain in the asses in the grand City of Prague, seat of the Holy Roman Emperor and also a superb way of not having to worry about pigeons resting on your window sill?

          • Ernest Endevor

I know, they chucked them out of the windows of that tower in the middle of the medieval city. I just think it’s funny they have official names: First Defenestration; Second etc.

      • Henri205

The actual meaning of the word (from Latin) is to remove windows. Guess it got bastardized over the centuries. Latin for window is fenestra and the prefix ‘de-‘ means to remove. See dehumidify, etc. I know, I’m being a pedantic ass. 🙂

        • Calamity_Jean

The word got stretched to mean “To remove via the window”.

      • TheSeer

“Fenster” is “window” in German. It sounds german.

        • William

From Latin de- (“out”), + fenestra (“window”).

          • Chucktech

            “Fenetre” in French.

Also, one can refer to the “fenestration” of a house or building.

          • William

You left out the doohatch that goes over the second e. That’s one thing I like about French, they have a diacritical to indicate a letter that used to be there. At some point in the past, the word must have been “Fenestre”.

          • Chucktech

I’d love include those, but I don’t know how to put those marks in text and/or make Disqus display them.

          • disQusTed

On an iPad if you hold down the letter you should get options for the same letter with accent marks. On a PC you can use the Alt key and the number pad to do this.

Alt + 0233 = é (hold down the Alt key while typing the number)

I had a job sending emails in French and Spanish and eventually memorized these codes.

          • Chucktech

So, after typing “e” just use ALT 0233? Great, thanks!

          • Steve Teeter

No, don’t type the “e”. Just use the Alt-233 thingie. An “é” will appear like magic.

          • Chucktech

            Thanks much!

          • disQusTed

Yes, it’s called a circumflex and I was also taught it meant at one point there was an ‘s’ in the word.

    • RaygunsGoZap

      And he does!

  • Thing is, I don’t like this overstating Cruz’ nastiness as somehow extraordinary. He’s a narcissist who thrives on that attention. Why is he such a vile person? It’s simple: he’s conservative, and he’s immature. I’ve had the misfortune of meeting young conservatives. They revel in being awful people. They say things for the reaction. They feed off the revulsion of others. Many outgrow this. Their politics remains the same, but their sheer joy at being hated diminishes somewhat. Not Cruz. He’s locked into being around 19-20 years old (at times, probably it’s closer to 14). That’s his mindset. That’s his maturity level. There’s a pathology at work here and I’m not qualified to diagnose it. But I’ve met his kind and he’s a prime example of “young” conservatism.

    • bkmn

His ego is also very used to being told he is extraordinarily intelligent. And his crazy crackpot daddy has been telling him for decades that he would be Prez. There is a lot of ego overload in him.

      • PLAINTOM

Beyond that he has been told he is God’s anointed choice.

The dude is wholly unlikeable, unattractive inside & out, and completely batshit from a batshit family, and yet he’s a few steps from being president of murrikkka.

        I’d say he’s learned quite a bit.
Don’t dismiss him – dismissing the power of masses of ignorants and the vile creatures that control them helped get murrikkka into such quandaries.

        • Gustav2

Trump is often uses Nixon’s language/campaign, Cruz is Nixon on steroids.

You are so correct. I worked for a utterly crazy republican. She loved gossip, playing mind games with her employees, and was a superficial child. She rarely did any work and was the CEO, but not the owner of the company. A horrible child who loved to be mean, expected respect and friendship from everyone. Everyone hated her and conspired behind her back. She is so out of touch with reality. Thankfully I walked out on that waste of time job, life is too short to work for crazy people.

    • William

      • DoctorDJ

        My thoughts exactly.

    • Gerry Fisher

      >It’s simple: he’s conservative, and he’s immature.

You sometimes see conservatives temporarily wake up from this immature navel gazing when a tragedy befalls them or their family, and they understand how public policy can help them. The lesson never generalizes, but it’s a bit of a break through.

    • What words are particularly difficult? Seems pretty standard fare.

      • TrollopeReader

“fun” as in fun finding all sorts of words to use, fun finding synonyms and the like for slime and weasel and the like, fun writing a non-boring article like this, fun with humor … words like “unctuous” aren’t used every day……

        • TuuxKabin

‘Unctuous’ is a perfect word to describe him. I’ve used it: ‘he’s so unctuous he leaves a trail of slime wherever he goes’. I’ve never had to use it to describe a woman, funny that. Maybe it’s a male thing?

        • Ok. I thought you were being sarcastic.

        • cheakamus

And yet, millions of people support him and give him money for his campaign. Indeed, even Carly immediately signed on to his campaign. This description of him being unctuous is completely incorrect.

He was elected in TX as the Solicitor General in the first decade of this century. Then, he was elected as Senator.

MILLIIONS of people love this zealot Dominionist. When he fails his bid for POTUS, which he most definitely will, he will be resoundingly re-elected to yet another term as TX’s senator.

Because MILLIONS of people love a zealot.

Living here in Indiana, let me just say that I cannot WAIT for Tuesday’s primary to be over, because the barrage of Ted Cruz ads will FINALLY be off the air.

All the other political ads are obnoxious as hell too. I could have sworn we had nothing but Republican congressmen who have spent the last eight years voting reflexively against anything Barack Obama stood for. But according to the ads, apparently we’ve had a bunch of weaselly liberal sleeper agents representing us the whole time! They LOVE Obama! They voted with him on EVERYTHING! They voted for his evil job-killing budget! They don’t want to repeal ALL of Obamacare like real Americans do! In fact, those bastards want MORE people to have health care! How gross is that?

Listening to Republican primary ads is like seeing the phrase “race to the bottom” take on a life of its own and lumber around like Frankenstein’s monster, terrorizing the countryside.

  • bambinoitaliano

Yes he is so hated, despised that the media and his colleagues can never stop talking about him. And eventually he will be so hated into the White House and people still talk about the most hated president in the history of mankind while he undo all the rights so hardly fought for decades. But he does not care about the hate as long as the people hatevoting him into office.

The colossal gall of the use of the term ‘conservative’ by soulless Ayn Rand vulture capitalists and Christofascists is bad enough, but the fact that these creatures and their minions (Scalia, et. al) have been somehow *permitted* to style their reactionary feudalism as ‘strict Constitutionalism’ is intolerable. Like Buybull thumpers, of course, they cherry-pick *only* the few selected passages which can be twisted to support their own animus–actual meaning, in historical context, of the words of the FULL Second Amendment, anyone?
