Target Stands Firm Despite Christian Boycott

More than half a million people have already signed the American Family Association’s boycott petition against Target. Despite the still-growing furor, Target is standing firm. From USA Today:

“We certainly respect that there are a wide variety of perspectives and opinions,” says Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder. “As a company that firmly stands behind what it means to offer our team an inclusive place to work β€” and our guests an inclusive place to shop β€” we continue to believe that this is the right thing for Target.”

She added that hundreds of Target stores “have single-stall, family restrooms for those who may be more comfortable with that option.” Target made its position public in a blog post last week, stating that the company welcomes “transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.” The announcement comes as legislation on transgender issues in multiple states has spurred several major corporations and businesses to take a stance on LGBT rights.

  • Larry Gist

HA! HA! HA! HA! Suck it.

  • Hmm.. I really have no problem with Target. And now with less Christian infestation? Win-win.

    • Bj Lincoln

      Yes!

    • JIMMYPALMIERI

      puhraizzz the lawd!!!!!!

  • kelven

This is the equivalent of a parent telling the child throwing a temper tantrum they still don’t get the cookie.

    • Gerry Fisher

We need much, much more of this in society, IMO.

      • David Walker

We need to give Jeebus a bunch of condoms so these children don’t continue multiplying. They are as much a social disease as any STD.

        • Jerry

Clearly the eugenics programs previously pushed by right-wing idiots during 20th century went after the wrong targets.

  • billbear1961

    Wait a second, haters!

I thought that boycotts were economic TERRORISM!!

    You fucking, goddamned, bullying HYPOCRITES!!

    • Frostbite

It’s only terrorism when it isn’t for Jeebus.

      • billbear1961

        Yeah, I know, Frostbite.

    • Phillip in L.A.

This morning while walking, we saw a flier posted at the Christian Science Church advertising an upcoming talk: “Ending Terrorism with Global Prayer”

It was still too early to snork, so just smiled!

  • Rex

It wasn’t about drinking fountains in the 60s, and it’s not about restrooms now. A transgender man is a man, a transgender woman is a woman. Those boycotting Target are doing so out of irrational fear and a deep seated hate of the LGBT community. Those fueling the fear and initiating boycotts are doing so to further their agenda so that they can continue to pull in funds to support their hate groups. Rational, reasonable people know this and will support Target, and our voice needs to be a loud as the haters.

    • Mark

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. The media and the RWNJ’s have schlepped it into a battle of the bathroom. A quick tinkle supersedes everything else.

      • It’s been about “the bathrooms” for decades. From the ERA in the 70s – 80s to “whether there’s a gay guy” at the urinal or in the stall next to me (being sought out by Larry Craig, heh) to now “OMG what if there is an MTF at the urinal near me”?

“Ladies'” restrooms don’t have urinals. Everyone uses a stall sometimes. Unless they put cameras in every public restroom there ain’t no way anyone is gonna be able to determine my anatomy.
These people have not thought this through at all. How the heck do they intend to enforce this nonsense?

Besides: didn’t we all (almost all) grow up in a house with uni-sex bathrooms? And what about airplanes?

        • Veylon

It’s virtue signaling. It’s got nothing to do with reality or practicality. It doesn’t matter whether the law stands or is defeated in court. What matters is that they proved that they were the Good Guys so that voters will vote for them.

        • Leanne Herda

Dumb ass. Planes HAVE SINGLE PERSON TOILETS. 100% ENFORCED. Try going into an airplane bathroom with someone. Not gonna happen. The MILE HIGH CLUB is long gone.

Plus in your home your usually NOT a target of exploitation. If your dad pees next to you while your brushing your teeth there’s more wrong with your family than that

    • Mark McGovern

      Well stated Rex.

    • Ryan Conrad

This is really idiotic, which means, of course, that it is a big upvote getter on this site. Einstein, this isn’t a parallel to the 1960s. Trans activists aren’t arguing for an end to bathroom segregation. They simply want to go to the segregated bathroom that is “right” for them, i.e., “transmen” would be able to go to the men’s room and “transwomen” to the women’s room. So at best their demands might be compared to a 1960s person of mixed-race (or perhaps a light-skinned Black person or a dark-skinned white person) demanding not an end to segregation, but the right to use the “correct” bathroom. But carry on with your blather and don’t allow critical thinking skills to interfere with your religion.

      • frank

More like the light skin AA or the dark skin caucasian trying to get the right to drink out of whatever water fountain they felt more comfortable with … critical thinking aside, of course.

      • Don Giovanni

Don’t worry, we’ll send you to the “right” prison when you commit a crime too.

    • Rambie

There are some still tilting at windmills, but they lost the marriage battle so now they’re just moving onto another target to hate in the LGBT community.

    • Freddie Clark

i love the stupid adds showing a trans woman standing at a stall peeing like a man. FYI PEOPLE there are no stalls in a ladies bathroom. Also, just a reminder , 90+ percent of child molestation is perpetrated by “strait white men” not trans people. so get a fucking grip

      • Leanne Herda

I still don’t want my son or daughter thinking a man who thinks he looks good in size 14 heels is NORMAL. IT’S NOT.

        • vataone

Trans women have been using the women’s restroom for decades and decades without issue before GOP politicians decided to make this a political wedge issue. Women who are Trans come in all shapes and sizes just like cis women (shocking, I know). Gender variant individuals have existed at all times and cultures of human history. They’re never going away regardless of the irrational hate, threats, attempts to legislate discrimination, etc.

        • elSurfeador

So you would feel more comfortable forcing the man in the top picture (born a woman) to use the women’s bathroom and the woman in the bottom picture (born a man) to use the men’s bathroom? Trans people are among the most persecuted group in America (sexual assaults, murders and even suicides) and you want to make them suffer even more just for the right to pee? Shame on you, falsely using your child as an excuse – even worse.

        • elSurfeador

So you would feel more comfortable forcing the man in the picture holding a magazine (born a woman) to use the women’s bathroom and the woman in the picture wearing a black dress (born a man) to use the men’s bathroom? Trans people are among the most persecuted group in America (sexual assaults, murders and even suicides) and you want to make them suffer even more just for the right to pee? Shame on you, falsely using your child as an excuse – even worse.

        • elSurfeador

A trans person has never been arrested for sexually assaulting anyone in a bathroom but yet you fear them. Meanwhile, a member of Congress tried to pick up men in a bathroom, another sexually abused high school kids and another sexually abused pages under his authority. Feel safer with them in the bathroom with your son?

      • Brian Gilmore

        urinals. you mean, right?

    • Scott Schiffer

Yea Rex, its about hate. You seem be able to look into the hearts of people. It sounds as though you hate the people that dont agree with you.

  • Christopher

  • popebuck1

Someone on Facebook was accusing Target of “implementing Sharia law.”

To which all I can say is, huh? Do you have any clue what ANY of these buzzwords are that you’re throwing around? These are the same people who think Obama can be a fascist, a communist, and a Muslim theocrat all at the same time.

    • Todd20036

Obama may be a fascist, a communist, a Marxist, a Kenyan, a Muslim, and a dictator, but he is NOT a porn star.

      • Reality.Bites

Not due to lack of offers.

        • popebuck1

          Hell, I’d hit that.

Demonic ape see, demonic ape do.

        • Skokieguy [Larry]

But what about demonic raisins? Do you rebuke them?

          • billbear1961

I rebuke them and renounce all their works!

          • Octavio

I dip them in heated chocolate and turn them into raisinettes.

          • Skokieguy [Larry]

No matter how you disguise them, they are still raisins. You cannot deny their origin by changing their external presentation.

            Oooh baby, feed me!

      • Bomer

I asked a “America is a Christian Nation!!” person that once and they stopped talking to me.

        • Low Gear

Is that all it takes? Cool!

    • Mark

You forgot gay. President Obama is a gay muslim, beer swilling……

      • popebuck1

Right. Because Sharia law is all about encouraging the gays. Everyone knows that!

      • glass

You need to ramp that one up more. Obama is a gay muslim atheist, kenyan born, beer swilling, liberal commie, who will force you to have healthcare, take yur guns, and outlaw your supersized mickey D’s! o_O
        Thanks Obama!

        Well, duh.

    • Christopher Smith

      But, but, but, KENYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Mad Nutmeg

Wait. Target is implementing Sharia Law by not giving into religious demands being placed onto their business. How does this work?

      • popebuck1

Well, if you’re not explicitly Christian – and by that, of course, they mean explicitly THEIR kind of Christian – well, obviously that makes you Muslim. Surprised they wouldn’t jump right to Satanic or atheist, but I guess Islam is more in vogue as a target these days (no pun intended).

Oh, who the hell am I kidding. ALL my puns are intended.

        • Low Gear

  • Mark

I was wondering……sometimes at county fairs, etc they will have hauled in portable bathrooms. I know I have never seen them labeled men/women. So, how will all those confused xtians know which one is proper? Does this mean NC will order all the portable bathroom companies to label their shit houses? πŸ™‚

  • I think I might go to Target today and buy something I don’t need. Just because.

    • billbear1961

And tell them how pleased you are with their stand for equality!

    • I bet the AFA’s boycott of Target will be just a successful as their boycotts of All-State and Wells-Fargo! I mean, look at those two companies: they don’t like, even exist anymore! :p

  • billbear1961
  • TMA

    They’ll cave eventually. Just watch.

Do you get any exercise besides throwing in towels?

      • billbear1961

Yes, spitting on people over 50.

Or maybe it’s over 40 by now.

    • billbear1961

IF business starts to fall off, they might.

Otherwise, they won’t–they’d look like FOOLS, cowardly ones, and they’d get hit by OUR side.

Business wants to be seen supporting us now–it’s excellent PR and costs them NOTHING.

  • These right-wing boycotts always fail. Remember the Disney boycott (over Ellen coming out)? Probably not. Disney noticed not drop in sales or viewership. Or the Starbucks boycott a few years ago? (To be fair, that one was doomed because right-wingers were buying Starbucks coffee to take pics of themselves throwing it out. Not a lot of thinking among that crowd. One you’ve paid for it, Starbucks could have shits to give whether you drink it or pour it out.)

So no one should be afraid of an AFA boycott. People will keep going to Target for the reason they always have…so they can avoid going to Walmart.

    • popebuck1

Yeah. Remember when Disney and Starbucks were still in business? I guess they learned their lesson!

      • djcoastermark

aah, sadly I was to young to ever go to those places. I do like reading about them in my history books. The good old days.

    • David Walker

But wasn’t it One Maudlin Maiden that actually did force JCPenny to fire Ellen as spokesperson? One success out of a million tries, but still… Oh, and I think they took credit for Penny’s low earning that quarter, the same quarter nearly every major retailer reported low earnings.

      • Penney’s has had an identity crisis for decades. it’s hard to carve out a niche if you don’t have either the lowest prices (Walmart, etc.) or high end exclusive merchandise. Macy’s has a similar problem. Ellen was an attempt at rebranding that failed. If someone has numbers showing that the Ellen ads were the problem, I’d be interested to see that but my understanding at the time was that customers were angry that they discontinued their coupon system which offered good discounts to regular customers at specific times in favor of “everyday low prices” (or however they branded that).

      • Reality.Bites

They ran a campaign that didn’t succeed so they went into a new one. She’s still a spokesperson for Cover Girl and has her own line of kids clothes at the Gap.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Absolutely, Houndentenor! As I wrote upthread, folks were actually lined up before 7:00 am waiting to get into our neighborhood Target when it opened

  • billbear1961

    Half a million? Sure!

Is that like the thousands and THOUSANDS of Christer bigots–or has Brian Brownshirt counted one HUNDRED thousand?!– who showed up to support the hate law yesterday in NC??

    • Bj Lincoln

I think the formula for Brownshirt is to add 3 0’s to the actual count. 500 = 500,000.

      • billbear1961

I have messy rooms. What do I get for it?

BTW – when you Google Targ, Target Boycott is # 4!

    • Reality.Bites

How does it help Target to have their customer phone lines tied up by this, preventing customers with actual problems from getting through?

      • The AFA and now NOM have given the exact same instruction to their followers in their petition and communications. I verified and changed it to be a message of support for Target. The petition now has almost 1 million signatures. I already support Target with my wallet but sometimes that isn’t enough.

Over 500,000 signatures. All because they see an imaginary bogeyman and bogeywoman where there isn’t one.

It reminds me of that scene in the film “The Help” where the character played by Bryce Dallas Howard, the really vindictively hateful one, is sitting around with her cronies and talking trash about “nigrahs”, saying that “they” shouldn’t share a bathroom with her and other “good” white folks because of germs. And disease. She’s making all this up just to be hateful and spiteful, and she knows that she’s a bald-faced liar. But she presses on anyway.

That’s what these hateful signatories are doing. So three cheers to Target and its management for telling them to stick it.

Just bought a new digital camera for taking snap shots while traveling this summer. I could have saved $23 if I’d bought the same camerage at Best Buy. However, Target threw in a one year loss/damage warranty for free. The store is awfully red inside, however, πŸ™‚

      • peacfulseas inWA

Target does price matching on all my prescriptions, my wife’s and mother’s. Not sure if it is policy storewide however.

        • Octavio

Sadly, their not on my insurance’s “approved” list of pharmacies. So, I stick with COSTCO and usually get stuck paying $5 per 30-day prescription.

          • peacfulseas inWA

I used to get my drugs at Costco but it is such a mess there. We are just a few miles from BC,Canada and the parking lot and store is jammed packed with our neighbors from the north. I am not complaining as they have kept our economy here humming and any drop in the Canadian dollar is seen locally. I don’t bother with my insurance any longer and now get my meds for 90days. I do occasionally need to call CC for a price check for my parkinson meds as they seem to fluctuate in price. Target pharmacy always accepted my word on the price I have been quoted.

          • Octavio

Doesn’t COSTCO exist in Canada? They have stores all over Mexico. Bought the five all terrain tires on my Dodge Ram at the COSTCO in Veracruz. One of them was flawed (Michelins) and the COSTCO here in Henderson, NV replaced it free of charge. I expected COSTCO would be all over Canada. πŸ™

          • peacfulseas inWA

Not sure if they are in Canada but if they were the price of say milk would reflect Canadian retail prices. The local Costco built a refrigerated room that has nothing but gallons upon gallons of milk within it’s walls. You see peoples carts and whatever you call those warehouse sleds just loaded with milk. And forget about getting in line for gas. You see BC plated cars filling their gas tanks and 4-5-6 jerrycans in the back of their minivans with their entire family riding along. This is not an exaggeration by any means. I for one love the Canadian people and we go to Vancouver regularly. I took my electrolysis training in New Westminster, we go to several women’s dances, brunch and do a bit of shopping and with the US dollar at an all time high at the moment it’s almost on par with Thailand when eating out, almost.

      • TampaZeke

  • Alan43

Have these right wing boycotts EVER accomplished anything?

    • No, but liberal ones often have. And the explanation of simple. Social conservatives were not going to give up ESPN (owned by Disney) because Ellen came out on ABC (also Disney). Meanwhile liberals were willing to stop buying tuna until the industry changed how it caught tuna so they weren’t killing so many dolphins in the process. If you want to have an impact, you have to be willing to give up something and stick to it. Most Americans aren’t actually willing to do that, especially the low-information right wing ones.

Ah, young Hondentenor, yoiu’re neglecting the seminal boycott, Florida Orange Juice, in 1977-79. After dear Anita Bryant opened her gay-hating pie hole sales of orange juice dropped enough that they canned her ass as the Florida Citrus Growers’ spokes person. In many homes across the nation (not just gay households) V8 juice suddenly became the popular breakfast drink. πŸ™‚

        • Aren’t you sweet! Yes, I do remember that one. Last I heard Bryant was headlining at a theater near Eureka Springs Arkansas. Not even a big enough draw for Branson, apparently.

I’m reminded of a scene from Designing Women discussing Bryant. I couldn’t find a clip but I didn’t find the quote:

          SUZANNE:
We all have heroes who disappoint us, it’s just a fact of life. I used to be totally wild over Anita Bryant. I wanted to walk like her, talk like her……I even wanted to have her hair.

CHARLENE: You do have her hair.

          SUZANNE: Thank you!

But then she got off on the homosexual thing, and it just kinda turned me off, y’know. I mean, she became obsessed with it and stopped showing up at pageants. And for what? I mean, it wasn’t like she was some
homely girl who had to worry about all the homosexuals stealing all the good-looking men, or anything like that. And y’know, the last time I saw her, even her hair looked kinda deflated.

btw, by her side during all that anti-gay stuff was a young Kathy Lee Gifford. Like there weren’t enough reasons to dislike that moronic hypocritical child-labor exploiting ****.

          • Octavio

LOL! Yes. And look at poor Kathy Lee today, getting a buzz on early while hosting puffy non-news stuff, reinventing the definition of flouzy.

          • I do not know what people see in her. Even without her Anita Bryant connection, she is annoying in the extreme. She’s also delusional. When confronted about child workers making her line of clothing her response was that no one cares more about children than she does. Really? No one? So she and her husband made a big show of caring, got some press and the company went back to the same child-labor practices as before. She a sorry excuse for a human being and her having a tv show on any time slot shows just what idiots millions of Americans are.

          • TrollopeReader

Is Eureka Springs the town that implemented LGBT protections, and re-voted them after the state got mad?

          • Yes, but the theater wasn’t in the town. ES is not that far from Branson. That’s a lovely area in the mountains on the White River. (note: White as in Whitewater. That’s where that development was that led to a big bunch of faux-scandal in the 90s.) She may not still be performing there, but she was years ago when I was doing a bit of performing in that area.

          • TrollopeReader

            thanks!

    • marshlc

I think back in the eighties they had some limited success – mostly, I suspect, because corporations fell for the threats. So it wasn’t actual boycotts that succeeded, but the threat of boycotts. As time has gone on and it’s become apparent that on the whole the right wingers don’t put their money where their mouths are, the threats have become toothless.

    • TrollopeReader

Well, there was NOM’s / Brian Brown’s boycott of General Mills, and a wing-nut lit his box of Cheerios on fire (which spread) … and then with his anger issues later died while sitting in his truck at his young kid’s sports practice …

oh, and they succeed in enabling haters, too.

  • Octavio

I dropped a bill for stuff at Target last week. I’m sure if I think hard enough I’ll be able to find enough stuff to spend another hundred bucks there this week if I don’t think real hard. That’s a bill I could spend a lot of other places, but I’m thinking Target needs my money. πŸ™‚

    • coram nobis

So it looks like the bigotry is serving as something of an economic stimulus.

  • Paula

β€œWe certainly respect that there are a wide variety of perspectives and opinions,”

No, you don’t. You only give a shit about finding new ways to ensure that the money keeps coming in. Spare us you faux jeebus love and hatred,

  • chris10858

Calling it a Christian boycott isn’t really accurate since there are many Christians who do not agree with the anti-trans efforts.

    • TrollopeReader

There are Christians, and then there are the “Christian(ists)” — the one TRUE religion. Oddly, some of them are Catholics (Brian Brown, Maggie Gallagher, etc) and then there are the Southren Baptists (sic) ….

  • Has my support FOREVER! #DontBackDown! Stand against the ugliness and hate we are seeing in this country! Fight Ignorance, intolerance, lies, and extremisism!

  • Joe Lumello

The new Target – All the things you know and love only now with less
    of that unpleasant Christian aftertaste!

  • Christopher Smith

New and Improved Target: 100% hatebucks FREE!

  • TexasBoy

Headline should read Target Stands Firms Despite Christian Economic Terrorism.

  • bob

Hooray for Target! You know most of those half a million are from duplicate emails and dead people anyway.

  • dcurlee

Thank you Target for standing strong.

  • Olivia

    Yay Target

  • glass

The Dayton Hudson Corp. (Target) has always been supportive of it’s customers. Every time I have emailed them in support of something like this they write back in a personal way, not an automated reply.
Target has always been a place that makes me feel like they are interested in selling things that are a part of your life. Unlike Walmart, Kmart, Fred Meyer and places like that, which make me feel like I’m in a store that is just trying to sell random junk. Target won’t back down.

  • Sean

Awesome. Going to order some Nate Berkus products from Target today & not one anti-LGBT parasitic ingrate better own any of them if that have such an irrational issue with LGBT people. Oh right; the religious-reich is ok with us designing for them, entertaining them, & providing their social networking service but treating us with respect is completely out of the question for those slave master wannabes. (See their use of gay & pro-LGBT founded/owned Facebook to oxyMORONIC bully Target)

  • StraightGrandmother

See what Target is saying here, if you are freaked out about a person who is Transe using the same restroom with you, then YOU Bigot Christian, go use the single stall family bathroom. Target isn’t going to force ppl who are Trans into that Family restroom, they are saying if you don’t like it, YOU go use the family bathroom.
    Props Target!

  • Phillip in L.A.

People may be signing AFA’s petition, but they are still shopping at Target.

We walked past our neighborhood “City Target” this morning a few minutes before it opened at 7:00 am, and folks were lined up waiting to get in!

  • Chicago joe

What about the guns? Dear lord, won’t someone think about the guns? They must be saved!

  • Gianni

They may sign a petition because God would like them to sign, but they aren’t going to pass up shopping for bargains at Target. Besides, I’ll make sure I go there on my next shopping trip.

  • Gay dollars spend better than christian dollars. For one, ours don’t have moralizing ‘scripture’ written on them, and that’s when the christian money is even real.

  • ian

I’m a regular Target shopper. If I can get out of there with spending less that $100 i’m doing well. I believe I need a few things from Target right now. Other than shopping there, is there a counter petition for those who support Targets stance on this?

  • Russell Fletcher

I stand behind Target. They have the correct view of where the world needs to go.

  • JIMMYPALMIERI

thank you target, for seeing beyond the rhetoric and fake signatures. i love your ideals and will continue to shop at your stores.

  • Jenni

I shopped at Target yesterday. It was very pleasant with the aisles Christian-free!

  • Laura

    This.

  • Jimmy Gross

    Good

  • Judith Beltz

Let the idiots boycott. It just means the rest of us can shop at Target without being surrounded by bigots.

Having no toilet paper in the bathroom concerns me more than who uses it.

  • DirtyPierre

    Allegedly half a milliion…

  • Bobby

Where’s the petition for support? I don’t really shop at Target much but I will today.

  • ScottInClearwater

Christian and American Family Association are two completely different things.

  • Robert P. Basarab

I would caution Donald Trump with this thought….if you want to make America great again, go into any internet story and look through the blogs for said story. If anything will make you drop out of the race, whoop there it is. I thought the Trump Facebook page had the idiot race on it….I surely should have realized its rampant through the entire country. I am embarrassed to say I am an American and so should ALL of you. Go out and do something constructive with your time and stop spending it watching TV and trolling the internet. Nothing at either place is real and pertinent to life as you need to know it. Care about your neighbor instead of shaming them, help someone who needs it because you can….no man, woman or child left behind. THAT is what made America great, and believe me, it hasn’t been in a VERY long time. Think about that instead of Kim or Kanye, the housewives or whatever else you give importance to. It is YOU who are killing society, not Obama, or Trump, or the “establishment.” YOU!

  • CC

As a Christain, I completely support Target. We are
not all like those people, and it’s articles like these that make me ashamed to call myself a Christian.

  • Brian Gilmore

Fully support TARGET. Will shop there more now.

  • VIsidore`

Transgender people have been using public restrooms for years. Now it’s an issue? Give me a break!

  • Angela Canzani

I WILL BE MAKING AN ACTIVE ATTEMPT TO SHOP AT TARGET MORE OFTEN AFTER SEEING THIS! GOOD FOR YOU TARGET!!!

  • Vera DelMar

It’s their sick, irrational fear, and deep seated hate of the LGBT community which makes them say things like…bearded men wearing dresses will go into ladies bathrooms to molest little girls or to look at grown women go bathroom. When I use the ladies bathroom I just mind my own business, take care of business, and go on with my business.
