Gov. Pat McCrory: Democrats & Gays Orchestrated The Bathroom Issue So That I Won’t Be Reelected

Seriously. He said that. From the New York Times

McCrory, 59, last week could barely contain his irritation that the law had taken center stage in the election, siphoning attention from his central message: that he has been a wise steward of the economy who had engineered what he and his team have branded the “Carolina Comeback.”

This hornet’s nest, he argued, was first kicked not by him, but by the Democratic City Council in Charlotte, which passed a nondiscrimination ordinance in February allowing transgender people to use men’s or women’s bathrooms. Before it passed, he said, he emailed the Council to warn it that if it changed “basic restroom and locker room norms,” he would be forced to support a state law overriding them.

On Thursday, he said he suspected that the entire matter had been orchestrated by Democrats and the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group, to give Democrats an advantage in a tight governor’s race.

The backlash, he said, has allowed for no dialogue on “a very complex issue.” Dissenters to the left-wing position, he said, were being intimidated. Mr. McCrory used the word “Orwellian” twice. “You’ve got to be politically naïve if you think this is not coordinated by a very effective — a very effective — group,” he said.

The most recent poll shows McCrory trailing Attorney General Roy Cooper by eight points. Cooper has said that he will refuse to defend HB2 in court.

    • Todd20036

      A big ol’ black hole.

      • kanehau

We’ve always hypothesized that white holes may exist. I think this is the first evidence for one.

    • Ben in Oakland

If the universe is his ass, sure.

  • M Jackson

The party of Responsibility, except —

  • Michael Smith

So Democrats knew that Republicans would pass this legislation, and it would cause a backlash, economic problems, and tank your popularity. I know a radio host you’d probably enjoy. His name is Alex Jones.

      Miss Cleo told them

From the same people who planted those fake Hawaiian newspaper birth announcements for that Kenyan baby in 1961.

    • Steverino

Also, he likely believes the president’s mother knew that one day her son would be elected president, so to pave the way for this, she gave birth in Kenya or Indonesia, but in collusion with Hawaiian officials, had the birth certificate faked to make it look like little Barack was born in Hawaii on U.S. soil…

Hah! If she was that smart, she should have birthed him in Calgary. Ask Eduardo’s mom.

He’s a member of the party of personal responsibility, right?

    • Judas Peckerwood

Yes, but you can’t hold him responsible for that.

    • The ironisticalism burns, no?

      • Christopher

I like the word “ironisticalism”. Fun to say.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Yes, for others, never them. Don’t be silly

      • David Walker

Jesse Helms would be so proud of his state right now. Everybody’s noticing it. Maybe not in a good way, but everybody knows where it is now. Besides, them faggots are learning their lessons and staying in their place. Put a condom on it, Jess.

    • b

They are the party of big government. The want to add costs and work to their police forces to monitor genitals. Police forces now have to hire genial enforcers. There was never a problem for the police. But now we have big GOP making them monitor restrooms.

      • Michael Abbett

Exactly! They are the party that lets people like Jan Brewer get kickbacks from relatives in the private prison industry based on how many people her law enforcement goons can convict on petty crimes to raise their profits. They are the party with legislators from states that have large amounts of big defense contractors who start fake, illegal and unnecessary wars to boost the profits of the military industrial complex. Yet all the while they sell this BS about being for smaller government, and the only thing they cut are things that actually benefit society like schools, healthcare, etc. And the poor uneducated goobs buy it.

      • TrollopeReader

genial enforcers would be an improvement!

      • David Walker

The cops will farm it out to a contractor. Show Your Junk, Ltd. Drop ‘Em, Inc. Va-jay-dix ‘R’ Us. Polite Gawkers. The Pee Patrol. Peep-See Callers. Cracker Vistas. We the Peepers.

        • John T

“Cracker Vistas” sounds like the name of an exurban subdivision. An epistemologically gated community for people fleeing cities like Charlotte where they tolerate the wrong kind of people.

    • IamBetter ThanYou

yes… but to date, there isn’t one republican in this country on the federal, state or even local municipality level that has ever taken responsibility and been accountable for their bullsh1t.

  • Brad Lathem

Funny I don’t recall them holding an emergency legislative session about it, but I do seem to remember you and your ilk doing this.

    • Randy Left Brooklyn

Yes, and they passed the bill in hours from introducing it they put it on the governor’s desk, allowing for no discussion of an issue he now claims to want to discuss.

      • Cboulder

No shit, it doesn’t seem like he thought it was that complicated when he signed the bill

      • Chris Baker

You did not see all the straight men lined up outside the women’s restrooms, with bad wigs and even worse makeup…. it was an EMERGENCY!

    • Chris Baker

The Charlotte law had failed a few months ago, because they dropped the transgender protections and the lesbian councilwoman voted “no” because it did not have that protection. So this law was several months in the making.

And by the way, trans people have been using the ‘wrong’ restrooms for decades. It’s just that no one has ever noticed.

      • David Walker

        Or cared.

      • IamM

Yeah. The main legal significance regarding bathrooms in those scary civil rights laws was that it would be officially legal for trans people to keep not bothering anyone, just like they’ve been doing all along. Then the Rethuglicans freaked out, because they think equality under the law is a bad thing.

  • Cry me a fucking river, Pat. Christ. What an asshole.

  • Butch

The time for dialog was before you signed the bill, not after. Idiot.

    • Jason Lin

Remember when the Democratic senators WALKED OUT of session in opposition to this bill? You could have maybe tried a little dialogue then before signing it.

      • Butch

I’m sorry about the slow response, Jason – I had two more gubernatorial campaigns to undermine before I could get back to you.

        • charemor

          Keep up the good work!

        • Ben in Oakland

          Priorities. Priorities.

      • Vicious Malicious

From my understanding they walked out because they knew it’d pass even if they stayed. Bigots don’t listen to reason

    • b

Now that he and his bros created their shit-storm, he brags about talking. They never wanted conversation, they wanted to be proud bigots.

      • Chuck in NYC

Or, using sh*t as another metaphor, the governor stepped in some and is now saying Teh Gays put it there on purpose. It’s our fault he didn’t look carefully before he got the stink all over him.

  • MrSkippy

That’s right Pat. the GAY AGENDA is that powerful.

They KNEW, they fucking KNEW, that if they got a non-discrimination bill passed in Charlotte that you would have to call a special session to get a discrimination bill passed at the state level.

And they KNEW that if that passed you’d sign it and then they could use that against you as a campaign tool.

It’s like they knew how to trick you into being a giant dickheaded douchebag in order to fuckup your campaign. It’s too bad you didn’t realize that being a dickheaded douchebag might cause you problems though!

Or… maybe they just wanted to be left to pee in peace and you and your jackbooted ilk came along and fucked that up and now you’re paying the price for it.

I mean it’s one of those. Sure, Ocam’s razor says it’s the second one but whatevs man. That damn agenda sure got you this time didn’t it buddy?

But in related news a Federal Judge appointed by G.Dubya, has upheld the whacked North Carolina photo-ID requirement for NC voters, which will disenfranchising thousands of voters; albeit in a 485-page ruling. Judge Schroeder also upheld provisions that eliminated a week of early voting, same-day registration, and prohibited the counting of out-of-precinct ballots.

Gov. Bathroom McCrory is one of his BFF’s.

Gays didn’t just fold up the tent the way they were supposed to do. It’s just not fair. Gay bashing turns out not to be as much fun as it used to be. It’s not my fault. They forced me to sign the damn law.

        :)

        • Gustav2

I now have conservative religious people coming up to me asking, “Why is this bad? What does this really do to you and your husband? or T’s, etc?”

          • That_Looks_Delicious

Careful… I had clematis in my backyard in Columbus and that stuff spreads like crazy, although it was beautiful on the fence. But it got to where there were clematis vines popping up out of the lawn, covering the air conditioner, etc.

          • Gustav2

It is contained by the garage and driveway from going into the lawn, if it would spread to the fence 3 feet away it would not be a bad thing.

        • Gustav2

    • Todd20036

And worse yet, gays got a LOT of businesses, cities, and entire states to boycott your little shit state over this, not to mention all the singers who no longer will perform there.

The few dollars you thought you’d lose has turned into such a flood that your economy is actually being affected by this.

How’s feel to be on the other end of a boycott that actually works?

Unlike your side’s boycotts agasinst Ford and Disney.

      • Frostbite

Starbucks is still quite sad happy about that boycott against them, so are their stockholders.

        • Pollos Hermanos

Target stock is remaining high as well (although it closed flat today).

          • kevin vincent

Yeah Target hasn’t actually been affected much the stock has remained pretty stable despite their ‘boycott’

        • Boycott NC

I buy stock in every company that FRC boycotts. I make a KILLING!

          • Gene

I am a stock broker and I have actually followed the stocks of companies they boycott.

its a GREAT way to pick an investment

          • mark99k

I’m so happy to hear this validated by an expert. Is it a short-term bump or do these companies see a steady gain?

        • I don’t go to Starbucks that often but every time someone decides to boycott I make special trips. Based on the lines there I’ll assume I’m not the only one.

        • IamBetter ThanYou

its a great point… not to mention… its not conservatives or the right support base that spends money or even has any money….
its the left… that’s where most small business owners are, where most business and corporate managers and executives are… college educated and professionals….
I don’t think the right gets it…. they are in no position to call any shots… they’re weak and financially insignificant.

          • Snarkaholic

The right has (some) money…they just waste it on guns, lottery tickets, and Mad Dog.

          • IamBetter ThanYou

and don’t forget cigarettes and pork rinds.

      • It still doesn’t occur to RWNJs that gay people and trans people actually have friends. I haven’t heard this in this round but in the past I’ve heard “Well gays are only x% of the population so the other x% shouldn’t care”. I guess that’s how they think. Only about themselves and everyone else can fuck off. Well some of us have empathy and care about our friends.

        • Gaiboi66

Truer words have never been spoken and I couldn’t agree with you more.

When marriage equality was on the table, I couldn’t believe the straight allies that popped up around me voicing their support. Some of them I was shocked by and it reminded me to not judge people based on your assumptions, they’ll fool you ever time!

    • Marti386

“Gays didn’t just fold up the tent the way they were supposed to do.”

That’s exactly it. They thought that they would discriminate against us and that would be that. They didn’t realize that most people don’t think like them, and would protest this. They didn’t think we would fight back. They didn’t think corporations would care.

      They done fucked up.

      • kevin vincent

So was the anti-discrimination crowd bigger than the pro one yesterday? and did the Gov just admit he cost himself the election? hard to say you are a steward of the economy when you screwed your economy up and lost billions

        • I’m guessing the internal polling is bad now and he’s looking for someone to blame.

          • UrsusMichaelus

He sounds like Tronald Dumpf now. Blame that Big Scary External Bogeyman du Jour, never one’s own ineptitude. He needs to own his own stupidity and political miscalculation. He and certain legislators (and no doubt, their electorate) connived their state into regressing at a speed that’s probably a little over the speed of light. Yeah, stupidity can travel that fast.

          • If Trump had hired and listened to consultants who fully understood the delegate process, he’d be considerably further ahead in delegates at this point. There have been stupid mistakes that could have been easily avoided (like putting put potential delegates all from a couple of counties in states that limit the number of delegates from any particular county). Yes, those rules are complicated and often ridiculous but there are people who know them, and even a few people who were around in the last contested gop convention in 1976.

      • Most people I know are straight. I seem to be the person they can talk to who won’t be all judgy about their problems or their personal situation. Here in Teabagistan that is a rare thing indeed. (In spite of the fact that 99.9% of the people around them have done worse than anything my friends would even think of doing. Such fucking hypocrites these social conservatives are.)

All that to say. Most people these days (especially the younger ones) would rather be friends with a gay person than a conservative Christian. And who can blame them. We are way more fun and far less judgy.

        • Ben in Oakland

          “Most people these days…”

You hit the nail in the cross right on the head.

      • IamM

They really must live in such an echo chamber.

      • StraightGrandmother

What he was counting on is the 62% of North Carolinians who voted in the very last State Election to amend their Constitution and make Gay Marriage Illegal. North Carolina was The.Last.State to do that in 2014. He counted on that 62% to back him up. He never counted on a NATIONAL response, and we are giving him that response in spades.

      • Gaiboi66

Yes, they f*****d up big time.

There were many years where the lgbt community would remain hidden in the shadows, just being happy to not be discovered. Those days have long passed and rightfully so. Justice today is the name of the game and hatred (although it still remains in society) isn’t supported the way it used to be.

    • Gene

I LIKE how he admits…which must KILL him, that being Anti gay is now a LIABILITY even in North Carolina :)

its very much a victory just in of itself!!!!

    • John Masters

Yeah, but as former North Carolinian, and someone who still has lots of Facebook “friends” from there, I can tell you that lots of the yahoos support HB2. What shocks me the most is that a couple of well educated people who I thought were true friends don’t see past the smokescreen and think it’s just fine.

      • IamBetter ThanYou

but the overwhelming majority don’t support it… and even many republicans have had McCrory on a sh1t list for sometime.
Its no surprise that he’s actually making statements that he’s lost the election (which isn’t until November).
His declaration should have been changed to “Patriots and Americans” cost him reelection. Even his statement is intolerant and insinuating division. NOT what an elected official should ever say or think

  • Lazycrockett

    Well Bless it’s Heart.

  • RainbowPhoenix

So, what? We impersonated him and the legislators to pass and sign this abominable bill? We’re the body snatchers now?

    • MrSkippy

YOu know, you might want to not give them any ideas for names to refer to Transgendered folks with.

Bad enough that McRory and friends paint them as pedo predators. Giving them “body snatchers” might backfire.

  • teedofftaxpayer

I wouldn’t hesitate to take credit for this, but It wasn’t the Gays’ cleverness, it was the guv’s stupidness and bigotry. So… from all of us in LGBT land a sincere “Thanks” for your hard work gubner.

  • Bruno

If that’s true, boy were you dumb enough to fall for it, weren’t you Pat?

  • Capritaur

Yes, the HRC and the Democrats were mind-controlling you with the gay weather machine when you signed the bill instead of vetoing it.

All this done by the Democrats in Charlotte and the HRC!!! (The HRC rarely leaves DC or their fund raising cocktail parties!)

WTFE McBigot! YOU and YOUR party have done such a spectacular job fucking up the state you went back to the playbook of ‘lets throw a sexual minority to the right wing like red meat and we’ll win reelection’. Only this time you didn’t figure there would be so much backlash. You’ve made our state an INTERNATIONAL DISGRACE!

You won last time because you framed yourself as a ‘moderate'(not that you fooled me or my friends for a second)but now that you’ve exposed yourself for the bigot you are with no mind of your own you’re panicking. Why don’t you hit your speed dial and get Art Pope and/or Duke Energy on the line. They’ll tell you how to respond. As they always do.

I hope Roy Cooper beats your ass at the polls. I’ve had enough of your smug face.

Pat, what has derailed your reelection chances is…you. You simply can’t be trusted and the people of your state know what a lying sack of crap you really are.

    • Gustav2

      Gee, sounds like Kasich!

Maybe it’s a plan or something.

    • That happened across the board with Teabaggers. They claimed they were fiscal conservatives and not that much about social issues. ALL of them have passed anti-gay and anti-abortion legislation and all have racked up big deficit spending. Deficits are not fiscally conservative.

      • Ben in Oakland

I couldn’t possibly be a city wanted to show its appreciation for diversity and respect for all. It couldn’t possibly be a city wanted to show they are a 21st century city looking towards the future instead of it’s confederate past. It couldn’t possibly be a city wanted to distance itself from a state many view as clinging to a past rife with bigotry, racial injustice and the kkk. It couldn’t possibly be that a city wants to be seen as progressive instead of backward. No couldn’t possibly be that, it has to be about you. However bigoted and wrong in his thinking this is not a stupid guy. Based on the economic backlash in Indiana can anyone explain how in the world the Republicans in this state thought this was going to work out well for them?

And just how were we ingenious enough to get you to prohibit cities from setting their own minimum wage? That must have been some 11 dimensional chess.

    • Gustav2

It was a list of everything rural folks hate about the cities…except they had to leave the racial stuff out.

      • Steven H

They didn’t leave the racial stuff out, though… HB2 specifically defanged local ordinances that actually PUNISHED racial discrimination (as opposed to merely tut tutting it while pointing in the general direction of the EEOC). North Carolina now strongly disapproves of racial (and religious) discrimination, but won’t actually do anything to stop it.

It just didn’t have the desired effect, since more and more people don’t see transgendered and gay people as any sort of threat but as human beings who just want to live their lives in peace.

  • John Masters

Pat, when you and the Art Pope owned Legislature rammed through HB2 in less than a day with no public input, you are the ones who didn’t allow any dialogue on a complex issue.

Now, like Republicans demand of everyone else, take some personal responsibility for the mess you made.

  • Octavio

Typical GOP tool. He’s convinced it’s all about him. Yup. He’s done nothing wrong. No flies on his ass. It’s all OUR fault. May he suffer a stroke from the social pressure.

  • Steven H

This isn’t actually the first time that Charlotte attempted to amend its anti-discrimination laws; it was on the agenda last year as well but was voted down by a more conservative city counsel.

Is McCrory arguing that the gays caused the vote to fail way back in the spring of 2015 so that we could succeed in an election year? We’re freakin amazing!

    • BobSF_94117

It never ceases to amaze me just how sneaky we are!

    • lymis

Remember how gays in the military was going to destroy the Armed Forces, and how marriage equality was going to destroy straight marriages? Obviously, we put all that on hold so we could have our chance to take down McCrory. No doubt there’s a reason we let Prop 8 lose, too.

    • coram nobis

Actually, it’s a fiendish plot to redecorate the statehouse in Louis XVI Modern and make the state’s theaters do nonstop productions of A Chorus Line and The Producers for a year.

  • McCrory should have realized that signing HB2 was going to create the shitstorm that it did – statutorily assaulting children and teens just for being transgender is abominable.

If he and the republicans in the legislature were really serious about the bathroom issue (other than to persecute trans people by claiming that they are sexual predators), they should have enacted a state human rights law covering LGBTQ people statewide, and then provided on the “bathroom” thing, something like the Connecticut version of “have your papers” *and* made it easier to have birth certificates corrected. (This way they could distinguish between trans people and the “bogeymen-in-dresses” trope.)

Something like that would not have created an issue.

    • Friday

If only most people in this country were mature enough for there to be a ‘T’ designation on people’s ID without it standing for ‘Target’ then *documentation* wouldn’t be such a darn issue, whatever stage trans people are at. Doesn’t make sense that in most states they have to have completed surgery to amend birth certificates, just to avoid oppression and stuff.

      • There is an increasing number of American jurisdictions that have adopted a medical model rather than a surgical model, and are leaving the determination up to medical and mental health professionals, in order to confirm a person’s trans status so as to allow for a birth certificate correction.

While there are some issues with this (particularly the fact that indigent trans folk have a more difficult time getting through the hoops, though the required letters should in a sane situation be covered by Medicaid).

One key is to have an alternative to a birth certificate (perhaps the medical/health professional letter),that would be sufficient for those born in a jurisdiction that does not allow a birth certificate amendment, or still requires surgical intervention).

        • Friday

It’s a while since I was current on this, …I was actually surprised to hear that many allow amended birth certificates at all, but I understand it’s still a patchwork, and still doesn’t help those most likely to be vulnerable.

  • Dot Beech

I wish the Democrats and the Gays were that smart and motivated. That old fool needs to be put out to pasture.

  • Friday

Ah, the party of personal responsibility and small government bathroom policing.

  • Mark_in_MN

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument and contrary to all sense and logic, that Pat McCrory is right and all this was a clever plot to gain an advantage in the election. Doesn’t that end up making him an incredibly stupid stooge for walking right into this trap and playing along with it? Really, if that is the case, his own argument certainly doesn’t make him look particularly good from a number of perspectives. One must conclude that the man is an idiot, an unthinking idiot, and a rather desperate idiot.

    • Craig Howell

A perfect running mate for Trump, Cruz or Kasich.

    • lymis

And seriously, none of these people who want dialogue can ram through a law that puts everything on hold for six months so that the dialogue can actually be held, or limited to the cities and schools where it’s already in place so it can be studied and the actual people who are affected can weigh in?

I think that would be wrong – delayed equality is denied equality – but it sure highlights the fact that their story is a lie.

He didn’t want any dialogue or any input from anyone but his own side, and the most hateful parts of his side at that, until it’s obvious he’s lost.

And on top of that, he doesn’t care because of the economic havoc it’s wreaked on his state. He only cares that it affects his likely reelection chances.

  • Matthew Delemos

Pathetic shitstain forces discrimination bill because he’s to cowardly and stupid to say no, then whines at the consequences and blames everyone but himself. The GOP is so gone this year.

  • Sam_Handwich

  • adamj2013

He wants a discussion on a complex issue? No one on their side wanted a discussion when they passed marriage statutes and amendments. No one on their side wanted discussions when they passed laws hurting LGBT people nationwide. But now that they are losing in the courts and in public opinion, all of a sudden we should have dialogues. Suck it. We tried for 50 years, more intensely in the last 25. You didn’t want to hear us. We’re done. Sit down. The time for discussion is over. We no longer see your point of view.

    • jmax

If they want a discussion, why did they rush this stupid legislation through in 12 hours without giving anyone a chance to object to it? Obfuscating fucktard.

      • Obviously they didn’t want to have a discussion at all. They wanted to take all the existing North Carolina anti-discrimination laws and turn them into mere suggestions…and indulge in some blatant LGBT-bashing to get the base riled up in advance of the upcoming election. Plus they figured the plutocrats would love the ban on raising the minimum wage locally.

To accomplish all that, they had to yawp “MEN RAPING LITTLE GIRLS!” — and then hope nobody noticed all the real reasons they were passing the bill.

And then go and sign a bill that was tangentially anti-trans (and also libelous), but also anti-gay…and then have the real purpose of the bill being to eliminate the state-level basic remedies for discrimination of every kind AND then also ban increases in the minimum wage, which in NC isn’t lower because it’s already at the federal minimum.

I think we’d all have to be politically naive not to realize the real reasons that bill was passed — and it was never really about the utterly non-existent threat of transgender people assaulting children and women in bathrooms.

    • lymis

Agreed. Whose fault was it that there was no time to have dialogue on “a very complex issue?” Maybe the guy who made sure there WAS no dialogue and that the state law got shoved through overnight?

    • Treant

      Tipped just for “goat-blower.”

      • It’s a lovely epithet, isn’t it? Onomatopoeic almost. I almost went with “blood-gargling troglodyte” — another of my favorites — but I prefer to save that one for people who advocate war and torture and summary executions.

    • Gianni

These right-wing politicians are really fucking pathetic and it really shines when they start whining about how abused and misunderstood they are. They threw the shit right into the fan and now poor babies are wearing it.

  • RealityBass

Why is everything always all about you, Pat?

    • David Walker

Because it so much fun being the martyr.

  • StSean

Before it passed, he said, he emailed the Council to warn it that if it changed “basic restroom and locker room norms,” he would be forced to support a state law overriding them.

    vs.

The backlash, he said, has allowed for no dialogue on “a very complex issue.”

Do they even listen to themselves????

  • TheSeer

“The backlash, he said, has allowed for no dialogue on ‘a very complex issue’.”

And calling special session of the legislature definitely did allow the dialogue and offered solution of ‘a very complex issue’.

  • coram nobis

“The backlash, he said, has allowed for no dialogue on a very complex issue.” There wasn’t time for dialogue when you rushed it through a special session and signed it as soon as they put it on your desk. And the issue was very simply expressed: “we gotta pass this here bill or there’ll be sex preverts in the bathrooms with our wives and daughters.” Yes, indeedy.

  • DuaneBidoux

I wish there were half as many Targets as Walmarts. I would shop there every time. I hate Walmart and what they stand for but there are so many Walmarts around that it seems like they’re always close when I need something thus I end up going there because I don’t want to get home 20 minutes later after a long day and then feel guilty about it. I’m now dedicated to plan out my shopping better and commit to shopping there as much as possible.

    • David Walker

If not Target, KMart is a reasonable alternative.

      • DuaneBidoux

The problem is simply the shear number of stores Walmart has. It doesn’t matter where I’m at if I think of something I need there always seems to be one right there.

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

I think Walmart has the exact same potty policy as Target. They just haven’t advertised it.

Let’s see, the Democratic Party, which seems unable to get majorities in Congress or most statehouses, and the (cough) Human Rigmarole Circumlocution, can manipulate you, Governor, and your legislature into passing a bill that not only overturns Charlotte’s bathroom-access ordinance but every local LGBT-related ordinance from Cape Hatteras to Asheville. Right.

My theory is that this was orchestrated by moonmen from the planet Neosynephrine, who planned this so that it would reverse the karmaplasm polarities in Raleigh and energize their star system.

Hey, Governor, it’s no less plausible than your theory.

  • ByronK

We’d actually like to eat your brains Pat but the cupboard is bare.

  • Tom G

Which Democrat had him call up a special session to pass the law? Same one that forced him to sign it?

  • Busted! Yes, the gays secretly forced Republicans to write and pass a bill that the government signed. It’s all part of our top secret plan to do something because reasons.

I wish we (Democrats and/or gays) were even 1% as clever, devious and effective and the right likes to make us out to be. Most of the time we are clusterfuck of incompetence and infighting. Thanks for the compliment, Gov Bigot McDoucheface (too lazy to scroll up and remember his name) but we would be lying to take credit for such a plan.

  • John B.

The big businesses and events pulling out of NC are getting a lot of press, but I wonder how many smaller groups and individuals are likewise avoiding NC, and what their cumulative effect might be. This issue has prompted me to cancel a spring trip to Raleigh, NC and to write about it in my otherwise purely non-political blog: http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2016/04/plants-and-politics.html

    • That_Looks_Delicious

There will be a long-term effect. Once a place gets a reputation for being backward, it tends to stick in people’s minds and it takes a long time to change minds.

Does your conspiracy theory include divine intervention, Governor? You’re beginning to get religious opposition.

Or as Peter said to Jesus upon meeting Pilate, “Christ, what an asshole.”

  • bsinps

    He’s pathetic

  • Acronym Jim

Let’s get this (*ahem*) straight. McCrory was going to campaign on the economic “success” of his “Carolina Comeback” while simultaneously and knowingly blowing up the NC economy by walking into the “trap” set by the Charlotte City Council?

Someone needs to tell McCrory that’s not how “Orwellian” is supposed to work.

  • Baltimatt

“[B]asic restroom and locker room norms” have been that trans people use the facilities that match their gender expression, fool!

  • Sydney

    Pretty funny, McCrooky.

And wasn’t/isn’t it Art pope who orchestrates your every move?

  • ceeenbee

I’m pretty sure that the Democrats dreamed up and initiated this at about the same time as they decided to forge the birth certificate of Barack Obama, knowing that he would one day become POTUS.

  • Gigi

That’s right. We infiltrated the inner circle of the NC Republican party and pushed through an insidious anti-gay bill with one goal and one goal only — to ruin McCrory’s chances of being re-elected. #GayMafia

    • TuuxKabin

Your sure get to the point in a succinct and comprehendible manner. Kinda capsulize the narrative into a bim, bam, boom statement. Kudos Gigi!

Now, Governor, do you want to talk about how the transgender issue gets orchestrated? Here’s one example.

This controversy was a concerted effort, and it wasn’t by the kindergarten child at the center of it.

“a very complex issue,” says the governor. How so? For you, maybe, because of how you went about it and willingly stepped right in it. Beyond your bullshit, I don’t see the complexity of it. What do you believe trans people have been doing all along when nature called? Is there some sort of Fucktard Club in this country? There seem to be an awful lot of likely members.

  • IamM

Riiight…They made you rush back, pass and sign a broad pro-discrimination anti civil rights bill, basically sight unseen, in a special session, lasting a single day. Sneaky.

  • Steverino

Oh, I see, it’s all about him.

    God, I hate narcissism.

  • John Kusters

Did he get HRC’s name right this time or was the reporter being generous? 😉

  • Richard B

I had to sit down and unpack this.
Patrick McCrory did all the acting out about the city of Charlotte’s antidiscrimination ordinance that inspired the NC legislature to convene for a special one day session to write a historic and hurtful antigay piece of law, which McCrory signed immediately. McCrory and his bigoted antigay republican friends wrote a law that 2/3 of North Carolina’s electorate hates.
After over 200 major corporations and international blowback, this mental weakling says it is all the democrats and the LGBTQ’s fault.
That is rather rich and I look forward to investing in campaigns this fall to dissect from power the malignant republican menace from North Carolina’s state government.

McCrory & Party set themselves up with a bathroom bill that was supposed to distract attention away from the minimum wage ban. Ya fukt yourself. You own it. Stop blaming others.

      • Helen Damnation ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

And not just the minimum wage issue; HB2 also takes away the ability to file employment discrimination suits in in state court. The law says:
“The law limits how people pursue claims of discrimination because of race, religion, color, national origin, biological sex or handicap in state courts. The law also means a city or county cannot set a minimum wage standard for private employers.” This takes the away the rights of ALL people to file a discrimination lawsuit against their employer, the real reason for this bill.

North Caroline’s unemployment rate is nearly identical to that of the U.S. as a whole. The median income is some $9,000 dollars below the U.S. as a whole. The childhood poverty rate is above 25% compared to a national average of 22%.

    • Marti386

Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs…

  • Franciscan

It would be more than helpful if the New York Times and other outlets for semi-responsible journalism would stop referring to the legislation in question as a “bathroom bill.” We know it is not that. It is a wholesale assault on equal rights, attacking the right of redress (by preventing cities from passing legislation on minimum wage and on non-discrimination that is more liberal than the Republican dominated state legislature will allow), as well as sanctifying discrimination against LGBT people. In tandem with the anti-voter legislation that came out last year, the legislature has created a climate of oppression for minorities and the poor in North Carolina.

  • You have to feel sorry for the guy. Seriously. The Potty Panic tactic worked in Houston. It’s working in Idaho, with Cruz playing it for all it’s worth. Even sites like this one have had comments saying GLBs should ditch the T, as including them is just too difficult – we’ll come back for them later. Sure we will.

Now he gets all GOP house reps and even 11 Blue Dog Democrats on side, and a unanimous vote in the Senate, a well-funded smear campaign, “think of the children!”, a sure thing, a slam-dunk, nothing could possibly go wrong….And it’s all turning to custard. Worse with every day that goes by. He doesn’t know what’s hit him, nothing makes sense.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.

    • Friday

At least I think what’s happened recently shows that the Right (and corporate media) really don’t *care* whether or not we ‘drop the T,’ they’ll continue attacking all of us even if they use bashing trans people harder to roll back *all* LGBT rights, while making sure it’s ignored almost entirely.

      • They need an enemy. It’s a mindset held over from the ancient Jews: We are the Chosen People and everyone else is out to get us.

Look back at the history: “social issues” started moving front and center when the Soviet Union started to come unglued; Reagan started courting the religious right at about the same time — Falwell and the laughably misnamed “Moral Majority.” This is all coming hard on the heels of Roe vs. Wade and Anita Bryant — the timing couldn’t have been better for the Republicans: the traditional enemy — communists — was toast. Enter women and LGBTs.

Now they’ve lost on the LGB part, so they have to focus on the T. (Frank Gaffney and Pam Geller have the Islamophobe concession.) It’s easy for them: most people don’t understand gender identity, and the right has done a good job of conflating biological sex with psychological/cultural gender.

So, trans folk are the focus, but if they can roll back gay civil rights, women’s rights, worker’s rights, local government at the same time, so much the better.

Hey, Gov, the issue is not that complex. You are just stupid. And bigoted. And hopefully in your last year as Governor. Actually, the only way for NC to recover is to pass a statewide non-discrimination act protecting LGBTs in all areas. Since you and your fellow bozos are loathe to admit your mistakes, I hope you are all voted out so that such a law can be passed. You got caught with your pants down and you deserve what’s coming.

  • Randy Riddle

He’s done this from the very beginning of his term as Governor.

He blamed liberals, the NAACP and “outside agitators” for the fallout over voter ID and the Moral Monday protests. He blamed a liberal conspiracy for the outrage over his support of abortion restrictions. He blamed the powerful gay lobby for the reaction to Amendment One. He blamed teacher unions and liberal hippies for the budget cuts over education.

He blamed the liberal media when the press started asking questions about conflicts of interest and cronyism with his management of Health and Human Services, the Duke coal ash spills, and the appointment of his benefactor, Art Pope, as Budget Director.

Pope uses the same playbook – Pope tried to call in the police on a blogger, saying he was being physically threatened, because of a critical blog post.

Everyone – including Republicans – are tired of McCrory and Pope’s constant paranoia and blame shifting. There’s only so long you can play the world’s smallest violin and complain about being the victim before you start looking like an incompetent, thin-skinned nincompoop that can’t take personal responsibility for anything.

Guys, don’t pat yourselves on the back too hard until this jerk is no longer the governor.

  • Lindoro Almaviva

    1. Yea, how DARE that city council not bow down to you and enact city ordinances that you do not like.

Do you know why the LGBT symbol is an inverted pink triangle?

Pat should be happy Mitch McConnell isn’t a Democrat.

  • If, as McCrory says, gays are so smart and he is so dumb as to allow himself to be out-maneuvered so spectacularly, then he doesn’t deserve to be Governor.

  • Teresa Jean

Sorry but his story doesn’t wash. His government overturned a non-discrimination ordinance to specifically allow, and encourage, discrimination. He should not be surprised, in this day and age, that there will be repercussions for this bigotry. I really hope he’s looking for a new job after the election because he’s put the economic health of the state in jeopardy. Oh, I hope he enjoys the lawsuits.
