OREGON: Navy To Commission New Ship In Portland After Mayor Refuses To Travel To Mississippi

From Portland’s ABC affiliate:

After Portland Mayor Charlie Hales announced he refuses to travel to Mississippi next month to commission the USS Portland over the state’s anti-gay laws, the Navy has announced the commissioning will take place in Portland.

The law signed by the Mississippi governor earlier this month allows churches, religious charities and privately held businesses to decline services to people whose lifestyles violate their religious beliefs. Individual government employees may also opt out, although the measure says governments must still provide services.

According to a news release from the Navy, the commissioning of the USS Portland that was scheduled for May in Pascagoula, Mississippi, will now take place in Portland in late 2017.

The 25,000-ton ship was successfully launched in February and will still go through a christening in Mississippi on May 21 this year. Thousands of people are expected to see the official commissioning in the Rose City [Portland].

The USS Portland is an amphibious transport dock. (Tipped by JMG reader John)

    • Paula

In this case, its not a military base. Its a civilian shipyard where the ship was built. Maybe the ships could be built someplace else.

Woot ! Woot ! Thanks Mr. Mayor !!

  • will still go through a christening in Mississippi on May 21 this year

which means the locals won’t have any reason to think they should change. nope, they’ll still have a big parade or whatever, and the local haters will still be able to stay “we did it our way, and those gawdless libruls will never force us to do what we don’t want!”

that the “official” ceremony will be somewhere else won’t even register on the local scene.

    • djcoastermark

especially when the commissioning won’t occur until “late 2017”. not even a blip on the radar to those in miss.

      • Harley

Yes, but this press coverage serves the same purpose of showing how this bad law is hurting their state in the long run.

      • teeveedub

Charlie Hales will no longer be in office by the time this christening takes place, because he has chosen not to run for a second term as mayor. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s handled by his successor.

    • i really love the sci-fi stories about splitting up the country, but the truth is that a significant portion of Jeebusland, whatever that might end up being, would go to war with Progressive Haven really quickly.

never forget that states like alabama and the rest totally rely on money raised off the backs of middle class people in northern cities and others like them. sure, we could close every base in the world, including those in the south. i’d love that. but i suspect in the american south, those people would hang on to their guns, and fight to regain the gravy tit they’ve been sucking on for decades, in the form of the MIC.

we called them “basebunnies” for a reason, yo.

I’m racking my brain trying to come up with a corny off-color joke about being “under” a member of the United States Marine Corps, and thus being sub-Marine… but unfortunately, my brain has shut down for the time being.

  • Ginger Snap

This country is so fucked up. If we didn’t have anything as States rights and all laws were federal shit like this wouldn’t be an issue.

    • Kate

There would be plenty of other issues, though. Trying out new approaches in law to address legitimate problems at a local level is a lot less expensive and less risky than doing so nationally. It’s a fairly effective system β€” except when states start trying to distract the electorate by solving non-problems instead.

      • IamM

Doesn’t seem like we do that much anymore. ALEC writes the laws for everybody now and the only experimentation is which versions are easiest to pass & most difficult to repeal or strike down.

        • Kate

It’s easy to forget all of the healthy changes that start with regional laws. Marriage equality started that way. Gender identity and expression are protected in many states. New York and California both just announced their approach to raising the minimum wage. Massachusetts health care reform in 2006 provided a model paving the way for the Affordable Care Act.

  • JaniceInToronto

Who in fuck would have imagined a ship launching worming its way into the crazy business in Mississippi. A ship. Christ, you couldn’t make this shit up.

It’s fun to watch from outside the U.S.. I can’t imagine actually being involved in that country. Scary…

  • Gummitch

Charlie Hales will not be the Mayor of Portland in late 2017. His term ends this fall and he’s not running for a second. Still, good for him.

  • Baby Dave

Wow. When even the US Navy is boycotting your ass, you’re fucked.

Figuratively. In a literal sense, you would be not fucked, were the above true.

    • Octavio

LOL! Had me some doorbell trade for a few years; a guy who was, ostensibly, straight. Basically, he was. But he had served 6 years in the Navy and had been introduced to “bro” sex while serving 6 months at a time on nuclear subs. He was a simple guy, smart but simple. He’d ring my doorbell about once a month because he said, “I miss getting off with another guy.” Never in his life would he have considered himself bisexual because, as he put it, “I’m not bi. I’ve got kids!” LOL! The little sweetheart. πŸ™‚

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

USS Mississippi (1841) was a sidewheel frigate that saw action in the Mexican–American War and was lost during the American Civil War.

Same should have happened to the state.

  • Go Navy! Have to admit I am former Naval Air Systems Command — and Marine Corp fighter pilots are the best (seriously, and great fun too)

  • Someone will get to break a champagne bottle on it in Oregon! One of the fun things about being a Queen (Capital Q that is darlings!) is attending a ship launching and getting to smash a champagne (sorry Empire Wine if you are British) bottle on a ship. If I get to come back as one in a future life I want to do this. Forward to 3:00 past. https://youtu.be/d8BLqFAR3dw

    • “Empire wine” ! Cunard traditionally uses a still white wine rather than champagne to launch their ships, and for the Queen Mary it was an Australian one — though I haven’t been able to find out who the maker was.

There is a lovely story told that when she’d finished her speech and sent the ship on its way, Queen Mary turned to the Chairman of Cunard and nervously asked him, “Did I do that right?” You can’t hear it in that clip; presumably the microphone didn’t pick it up . . .

      • Another (probably apocryphal) story is that the name of the ship was originally the Queen Victoria. When the head of Cunard met with King George (V) for permission to name the ship “after Britain’s greatest Queen) his answer was “my wife will be delighted!”. So hence the Queen Mary. I asked an in-the-know friend of mine about this story and his answer was “yes, the King was winding the Chairman of Cunard up at laughed his head off when he didn’t back off – it’s a famous story”.

        • That story is indeed apocryphal, though it has had a vigorous life.

As you know, the government was subsidising the enormous cost of the new ship, and one of the conditions was that Cunard and the White Star Line (which had been running at a loss) should merge, to form a single company which could dominate the Atlantic trade over the very real competition from the French, Germans and Italians that had emerged in the 1920s. (The US was not a significant player at that point.)

Now, Cunard’s ships always had names ending in -ia, — Mauretania, Lusitania, Aquitania, Berengaria and so on — while White Star’s ended in -ic — Majestic, Olympic, Brittanic and, most famously, Titanic ; and the Board of Cunard/White Star decided it would be impolitic to use either, but to patriotically give their two new superliners royal names.

They hit on Queen Mary — but there was already a ship of that name, a small paddle steamer that used to take passengers on pleasure trips. Much secret negotiation went on, and the owner agreed (for a consideration, it is said, of 5000 pounds) to rename their ship Queen Mary II. So, more secret negotiations between Cunard and the Palace …

So the stage is set. Cunard’s Chairman (Sir Percy Bates) was meeting with the King to report on progress on the new ship, and King George asked it a name had been chosen for it. To which Sir Percy replied, “Sir, we would like your permission to name her after the greatest woman who has ever been Queen of England.”

Before he could mention Queen Victoria, the King cut in: “Percy, that is the most beautiful compliment that has ever been paid to my wife! I’ll ask her, but I’m sure she will be delighted.”

It’s possible, of course, that the King’s staff hadn’t briefed him about Cunard’s plan for the name and that he was genuinely surprised; but Cunard and the King were happy enough for the tale to be told. It was great publicity for them and for the Queen.

(Cunard did eventually name a ship Queen Victoria, and she went into service in 2007.)

One of my vivid childhood memories is of sailing into Southampton in early 1958, aboard Royal Rotterdam Lloyd’s Willem Ruys, a ship of 20,000 tons. The Queen Mary was in port, and as we sailed past her stern towered over us.

          • Thanks Roger that is some story! I case you are interested about Queen Mary (the person not the ship) I did a You Tube video that has over 100,000 hits about her — check it out here. https://youtu.be/gGExX4N5bAw

The law signed by the Mississippi governor earlier this month allows churches, religious charities and privately held businesses to decline services to people whose lifestyles violate their religious beliefs.

It’s pretty disingenuous to include “churches” in that statement. They already had the right to discriminate, so it’s completely false to say that the new law allows them to do so.
