NOM Leader Brian Brown Launches Petition Urging Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant To Sign Anti-LGBT Hate Bill

Yesterday afternoon Mississippi Democrats used a procedural tactic to temporarily delay their state’s anti-LGBT hate bill, which is still likely to reach the desk of Gov. Phil Bryant as early as Monday. Today NOM president Brian Brown’s offshoot group ActRight launched a petition urging Bryant to sign to bill. An excerpt:

All across America, LGBT extremists are working overtime to force devout Christians and other people of faith to personally participate in celebrating a same-sex ‘marriage’ even when doing so violates their deeply held religious beliefs. Those who have refused to abandon God’s commands when it comes to marriage have been hit with lawsuits and huge fines, lost their jobs and even been put in jail. This must stop, and it will stop in Mississippi if you act today.

Please sign our petition to Governor Phil Bryant demanding that he sign into law critical religious liberty legislation (House Bill 1523) when it reaches his desk that will protect Christians and other people of faith from having to abandon their beliefs about marriage.

It is outrageous that gay and lesbian extremists have been allowed to discriminate against, harass and punish Christians and others when it comes to marriage.’ Fortunately, the Mississippi legislature is acting to prevent this type of discrimination and is moving forward to enact robust legislation to protect the rights of Christians and people of faith against being punished for refusing to abandon their beliefs about marriage.

House Bill 1523 protects pastors, churches and individuals from having to solemnize a gay ‘wedding’ and protects individuals and small businesses like florists, bakers and photographers from being forced to perform services at a gay ‘wedding’ ceremony that violates their deeply held religious beliefs. The legislation also prevents LGBT extremists from forcing their gender ideology on Mississippi which would allow men to force their way into intimate facilities reserved for girls and women, including showers and restrooms, simply by claiming they “identify” as women. Biology determines gender, not “feelings!”

The petition, which connects signees to NOM’s money beg list, has 78 signatures at this writing.

  • Gustav2

Because an internet petition doesn’t cost NOM that much and gathers email addresses.

    • Reality.Bites

It costs them literally nothing, because they’re not even going to print it off and send it to Bryant.

    • and the thing is it is literally the ONLY product NOM has anymore these days in terms of “taking action” but that’s what you get when an organization tries to keep going after their cause for existence is already done and over with.

      • GC

More proof that they were never really about “marriage” but rather about trying to do away with those icky gheys altogether.

        • Mihangel apYrs

          I hate you – that’s my comment.

Still I was born next county to Cheshire, so I forgive you

          • GC

Great minds… even if born on opposite sides of the pond! 🙂

  • Prion

    • David Walker

One day a cartoonist will steal the idea, only “colored” will have an X over it and “LGBT” will be printed above it.

  • Blake Jordan

The governor is going to sign it anyway, but watch NOM claim victory once it is done!!!

    • Frostbite

I made the sun rise in the east today. You’re welcome.

      • GC

        Birdbrained logic!

    • Falconlights

Watch the assholes at CNS crow and carry on as well.

  • Silver Badger

78 whole signatures! Wow! If each signer just donated one dollar, Brian would have enough money for lunch!

    • Reality.Bites

Clearly you know little about Brian if you think that would buy him lunch.

      At McDonald’s.

      Using the dollar menu.

      • Silver Badger

You’re right. I will admit that I know as much about Brian as I want to. I’ll wager he’s no better than he should be.

        • Reality.Bites

Are you British? Although I’m familiar with “no better than he should be” I associate its use with the other side of the pond.

          • Silver Badger

I was born in Nebraska. The phrase “shes / hes no better than they should be” was one of my grandmother’s favorites.

          • My grandmothers said that too!

          • Reality.Bites

Hmm… maybe it’s not a location thing, but an age thing. Now that I think of it, I only really know it from Miss Marple mysteries.

But if the bible-thumpers truly believe what they preach, then the aborted “children” go straight to heaven before they can acquire “original sin,” or sin themselves!

Abortion providers should be praised, not persecuted!

(Well, I think so too, but from completely different premises which are actually reality-based.)

  • Dan

A manufactured win. So when Bryant signs it..which everyone already knows he will….Brian can claim a victory. It’s such a shame his few backers will buy this shit show as reality.

    • BlueberriesForMe

      But he’s a ‘leader’. I don’t understand.

Brghahahahahahahaha!!! Unless you’re the bride or groom, the person officiating the marriage, a bridesmaid, a groomsman, or a ring bearer, you’re not participating in the marriage, idiot!!!! The vendor that sells popcorn & beer at the football game is not participating in the game. Get the hell over it, fool!!!

      • Nic Peterson

And what of the faith based organizations that take funding from states that use capital punishment? Does Catholic Charities support capital punishment because they take money from the state? Did the priest that administered Last Rights participate in the execution?

        • MarkOH

“Did the priest that administered Last Rights participate in the execution?”
GREAT example. But, the Catholics do support capital punishment I believe.

          • Nic Peterson

This recovering Catholic will have to disagree with that last part from a doctrinal point of view. The church is vehemently opposed to capital punishment. The rank and file cafeteria types, not so much.

          • MarkOH

Thanks. I always thought the church was all “eye for an eye”.

          • Nic Peterson

It’s the darnedest thing to observe various business units of religious institutions cozying up with states that still practice capital punishment — Catholic charities comes to mind. They have no problem taking money from that state but couldn’t fathom placing a child with a qualified same sex couple because it offends their religion.

I really hope some legal eagle will use an example like this to demonstrate the animus that drives the decisions.

    • vorpal

By their logic, gun sellers are active participants in gun crimes.

      • Reality.Bites

In their logic, even the shooters aren’t active participants in gun crimes. The only people responsible for shootings are gun control advocates.

      • MarkOH

Ha! Great minds DO think a like

      • Kara Connor

One upvote is totally inadequate for your comment. It is the same logic that says laws protecting trans people enable predators, but no law can stop criminals getting and using guns.

        • vorpal

Thanks, Kara! I am always delighted to hear from you and see your comments, and I appreciate the upvote!

    • 100% agree, this nonsense that providing a business service = personal participation is beyond absurd. anyone who thinks critically about this for 2 seconds knows that providing a business service does not mean that you support whatever the person buying the product/service is doing.

Now there is a way in which the business can show support while providing a service or product and it is called providing it for free or at a discount. So we know what that looks like no matter what NOM and co invent.

  • Jude Newton

I’m sure he’s referring to Kimmie Davis. Not that he’s correct about that (she was thrown in jail for contempt of court, not for failing to “participate” in a gay wedding).

Here’s the thing – we don’t want to “force” you to participate in our weddings. We want to REMIND you that all are bound by anti-discrimination laws, and what you think an invisible super being has to “say” about the matter is totally irrelevant to the civil laws of this nation. We won’t force you to do anything. In fact, we will do all we can to avoid doing business with organizations that express a desire to opt out of our celebrations. We would MUCH rather have our money go to inclusive businesses. We just want to make sure you understand what the law is, and that you follow it.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

    Hyperbole much?

    • Friday

Utter lies *then* hyperbole about them, particularly regarding a state without civil rights to begin with.

Course when this goes to Court it’ll be such a clear animus-based Unconstitutionality that it’ll be hard for the FEderal courts to sidestep questions of scrutiny. Kind of like Lawrence v Texas, I think, but even more so.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

Yes, I keep clinging to a silver lining here.

  • John B.

Hey, if this works out, then they can start working on letting people refuse service to the Blacks, the Jews, and maybe even the Catholics (because we all know they’re not really Christian™). It would really be a win-win for them!

  • TrollopeReader

“I” signed …. how does one see the “public” signatures?

  • RLK2

What’s with the “extremist” bullshit all the time these hate groups throw out? They are the extremists. Why hasn’t there been a counter point to this rhetoric? Optics are everything. The LGBT community sucks at optics.

    • Lindoro Almaviva

Remember that it takes one. When a bully takes their first beating they immediately accuse others of bullying. When an abbuse victim fits fack, their abuser immediately screams how they are being abused, it is typical.

Brian Brown can scream all he wants; the fact is that his organization 1. does not have the clout it once had and 2. does not have the money resources to tell MS “Go ahead and sign it, we’ll cover you from the economic fall out.”

With that in mind, it is like a tree in the forest; it fell, nobody knew whether it made a sound but when the time comes to forage for firewood, you can bet your sweet ass it will end up in the firepit.

  • Gianni

Ever since marriage equality was made law, the one consistent thing in all the Christianista objections is the use of the word ‘participate’. It’s is key to their attempts to undermine and change the status-quo that ‘participate’ be made to mean any and all association on whatever level with a same-sex marriage. Of course, providing goods and services for a gay couple’s wedding is, in their minds, definitely ‘participating’. I can’t see how that is, but they need to use that to broadcast their religious persecution. Funny that it hasn’t gone so far that just walking past the property where a same-sex wedding/reception is taking place is the dreaded “Participation”!
