New RNC Site Readies Public For Contested Convention

Talking Points Memo reports:

The Republican National Committee has launched a website to inform the public about what happens in the event of contested GOP convention, the Washington Examiner reported. The website, ConventionFacts.gop, lists party rules regarding the delegates required for a candidate to be nominated to lead the GOP’s 2016 convention, as well as the process if no candidate initially meets the requirement.

ConventionFacts.gop is a tool for voters to learn about convention delegates, rules, and how the overall process works in a simple, easy to understand format,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Conventions are democracy in action and our Party’s gathering in Cleveland will be an exciting, transparent, and fair process.”

    “Duck and Cover”?

  • Philly Mike

I hope they also mention to bring all their loaded firearms to the convention hall as well.

    • sam

Guns inside the Hall are NOT allowed per the Security People guarding the nominees…
That will just be a bar room brawl.

BUT OUTSIDE the convention hall, guns are allowed by their State law………………SO the show should be interesting,
plus the 50 million dollars spent for the police and armed guards. Made for TV Donald’s Reality shows.

There are ways for these goons to get guns inside.

    • Lumpy Gaga

How fine are the distance measurements on Grindr? Does it get as granular as “Kicking you in the head right now.”?

      • Yes and no. It finesses it down to that plus “The one kicking you in the head right now with shit on his lips from kissing Conservative ass.”

      • EdmondWherever

I think it just lets you know when someone is on stage at the convention.

      • teeveedub

Uh huh. It’s going to get ugly up in Cleveland.

      • The resentment against the party establishment has been festering for at least a decade. It’s been openly discussed among that crowd and on the radio talk programs that they listen to. This is no secret but the 1% rarely listens to anyone but each other. I know this from having worked for them. It was both fascinating and surreal.

Here’s a suggestion for the banners that adorn the entrance of the 2016 GOP convention:

“Abandon hope, all ye who enter here!”

Truth in advertising, and all that…

    • TuuxKabin

“Abandon hope, all ye who enter here” is what I say to myself when descending onto the subway platform.

Ah, you must be a fellow Washingtonian!

        • TuuxKabin

Upper West Sider, NYC, #1 B’dway local. Which line do you have to ride?

          • Craig Howell

Everything for me starts on the Red Line. In case you missed it, Metro authorities just announced this week that they might have to shut down one or more of our lines for 6 months at a time to catch up with repairs & maintenance. I have no car, so you can imagine how thrilled I am by this prospect.

          • TuuxKabin

I did miss that and can tell you’re beyond thrilled.

When a friend lived in Silver Spring we’d use the Red Line, ’bout the only one we used. Our infrastructure’s falling down around our heads. Even what should be fairly new in service is worn down.

Luckily, retired and all, most daily needs I can walk to which I use as an excuse to not leave the neighborhood.

Got a bike, and are the bike lanes dangerous as pointed out during the Metro shut down?

Good luck, hope your inconvenience is minimal.

          • Craig Howell

I don’t bike either. I walk most places or meet friends at Metro stations for my Adventuring hiking expeditions and out-of-town excursions. I will survive, begrudgingly.

  • Check out those rules. Most delegates are bound to vote for a particular candidate on the first ballot, based on the rules of their primary, caucus or convention vote. If no candidate receives a majority of votes on the first ballot, the convention moves to the second ballot where 50% of the delegates are free to choose any candidate they want. If no candidate receives a majority of votes on the second ballot, the convention moves to the third ballot where most delegates are free to choose any candidate they want.

Two things the rules don’t seem to address. What happens if no candidate receives a majority on the third ballot? And more importantly, what happens if the convention turns into a brawl during the second ballot and delegates must be dragged away in straitjackets? Do only the votes of the remaining delegates count? Must the votes of those dragged away be considered if it is ruled that they are not insane? If ruled sane, do their votes still count if they are charged with assaulting a fellow delegate? What is conduct unbecoming a Republican delegate considered to be these days? Are assault guns okay as long as they are registered?

    • boatboy_srq

“What is conduct unbecoming a Republican delegate considered to be these days?”

      Either:
      1) Assaulting a fellow delegate so badly that artificial respiration is required;
or (NB this has to be barefisted or using blunt instruments: firearms are permitted per 2nd Amendment):
      2) Exhibiting symptoms of rationality, reason and willingness to compromise (i.e. human).

As for the rest, your guess is good as mine.

      • Does it have to be all three: rationality, reason and willingness to compromise? Or just any one of those? Because all three would be a threshold too high for any Republican.

        • boatboy_srq

I think any of the three would disqualify.

    • Octavio

I suspect that tranzene gas will be piped into the convention in case of a riot.

  • Adam Schmidt

Conventions, particularly a contested convention are absolutely NOT “democracy in action”. Voters vote for presidential candidates and based on the proportion of that vote, the state’s party leadership hand picks delegates who are bound to vote a certain way on the first vote. Voters don’t have a say in who is selected as a delegate nor who these delegates vote for after the first vote. At best it’s some sort of republican concept (as in of a republic, not the party) but it’s certainly not democratic (which would involve citizens having a direct vote).

  • teedofftaxpayer

It’s going to be an interesting convention. Even the normal businesses that gives to the conventions are backing out or giving just a minimum amount. Guess Trump going to have finance the convention on his own and I’m sure it will be the “greatest convention in the world.”

I have one request. Will Tom Lehrer please write and record a song about the 2016 GOP Presidential Primary? I want to hear it as the soundtrack for the video of the convention to come. He’ll be doing us all a great service. Mr. Lehrer, your time has come to entertain an entire new generation of Americans.

    • Jim B

The last time someone asked him why he didn’t write any songs about modern politics, he said that it made him too angry (and this was in the middle of W’s reign). Quote: “I’m not tempted to write a song about George W. Bush. I couldn’t figure out what sort of song I would write. That’s the problem: I don’t want to satirise George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporise them. And that’s not funny.”
But considering so much of the shit he was mocking/singing about back then still lingers on today…

I suspect that some millennial’s watched how the Republican’s really operate, during the last Presidential primaries.
They watched as every trick and deceit was thrown at a Libertarian, Ron Paul.
That primary process was so flagrantly corrupt. We all watched in amazement as they did everything they could to prevent having to actually count the Ron Paul votes.
    Changing rules “on the fly”.
What a disgusting display – that may have left an indelible mark.
