BREAKING: North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory Signs Bill Legalizing Anti-LGBT Discrimination Statewide

From the Associated Press:

Gov. Pat McCrory signed House Bill 2 into law shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday, overturning Charlotte’s controversial transgender ordinance. McCrory’s office released a statement Wednesday night, saying “the basic expectation of privacy in the most personal of settings, a restroom or locker room, for each gender was violated by government overreach and intrusion by the mayor and city council of Charlotte.” The governor also said the “radical breach of trust and security under the false argument of equal access not only impacts the citizens of Charlotte but people who come to Charlotte to work, visit or play. This new government regulation defies common sense and basic community norms by allowing, for example, a man to use a woman’s bathroom, shower or locker room.”

McCrory’s statement and tweets tonight only mention the so-called “bathroom issue” – but in fact the bill excludes LGBT citizens from protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations. The bill also overturns not only the LGBT rights bill in Charlotte, it repeals similar laws in eight other North Carolina municipalities

  • Frostbite

bipartisan? uh. the democrats walked out you idiot.

    • RobynWatts

Only in the Senate. The House had some help from our side in passing this bullshit in the first place.

  • billbear1961

    You vile, lying BASTARD!

    • David From Canada

You can’t reason with one of Beelzebub’s disciples. McCrory is with the Dark Side.

    • ColdCountry

Easy, Bill. He’s not worth having a stroke over. Not that I don’t agree with you….

      • billbear1961

These spiteful, disgusting hypocrites make me SICK.

Typing “Republican” is fewer keystrokes, and had the same meaning.

        Yes, they are synonymous!

Hey… we haven’t seen that exponent of “both parties are exactly the same” on here for several days…

What is it? Do we sit in the dark and listen to Melissa Etheridge songs played backwards?

          • Paula

Something similar. I need to find more bat blood to do it again.

i call mine “jericho”, except the walls come down when i want them to, not before.

At least in my politically aware lifetime, the Greedy Old Party has consistently been on the side of downright fucking evil much more than the Dems.

Thank you, kindly. I love these videos. They may be predictable because of the hook, but they also tend to be creative and inventive.

    • Ron Minor

      Well said……….TOtally agree!!!!

  • billbear1961

Challenge this in court, Charlotte and other DECENT NC localities!

    • FAEN

      I’m sure it will be.

    • FAEN

Most big cities in NC are a lot more liberal that people think.

      • billbear1961

Since you live there, I will take your word for it.

        • Ben Spreen

As a fellow NC local and LGBT I feel like it is worth mentioning that many of our cities are very progressive and friendly. Its just that empty space between them that seems to be full of less inviting people. And personally I dont see myself leaving, places like the Triangle are surrounded by great universities large R&D groups etc. At times it can feel a little bit like silicon valley but with more southern charm.

  • RyanInIllinois

    Boycott, boycott, boycott.

    • Doug105
      • Doug105

Not much there about the only two I could boycott are Butterball and Lowes, neither of which I can remember the last time I used.

        • DaveW

Torrent? Isn’t that stealing copywritten material????

          Shame

      • tcinsf

I’m sorry, but the first two listed under “A” are Active Duty and Adam and Eve? Bizarroworld.

        • Doug105

          Welcome to the bible belt.

        • Beagle

Adam and Eve is located in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area, the most liberal part of the state thanks to the state university. When I was in school there, Adam and Eve was brought up on obscenity charges. The jury found them not guilty — and rumor had it, the jury made the decision in record time and then waited to go back into the courtroom, to save the prosecution embarrassment.

    • DaddyRay

Just crossed Asheville in the fall of the list – too bad, I love Asheville and had such a good time there plus it is such a lovely liberal city

      • charemor

Sad, there are so many beautiful places in the south, but all of them becoming unacceptable to visit because of their political attitudes.

    • Christopher Smith

      Hit them where it hurts.

  • FAEN

How can it be bipartisan if the Dems didn’t vote fuck wad.

This BS means you’re worried about the coming election so you’ve thrown meat to your tea bagger base. It is my sincere hope that Roy Cooper picks you apart and exposes you for the lying asshole you really are.

You may have won for the moment but you also might have just given the Dems and the LGBT community just the nudge it needs to come out in force!

    • timncguy

Only the dems in the senate walked out. There were dems in the house who voted for the damned thing.

      • FAEN

Yes of course. Thank you for the correction. I let my anger disrupt my thoughts.

      • tcinsf

true … but that’s not “bipartisanship” when you have a couple of Southern “Democrats” who are straight up bigots voting for the thing.

        • timncguy

it was more than a “couple”

    • tcinsf

Yeah, they walked out. But that’s their kind of “bipartisanship.” Submit to whatever the thugs want.

    • Dramphooey

Bipartisan means the Baptists joined hands with the Pentecostals.

    • REBELComx

Did anyone take notice of the big red rectangle on the bottom of this thing? does that violate the 1st Amendment? Ya know… the whole redress of grievances thing?

      • McSwagg

Fortunately, NC cannot define jurisdiction or standing for Federal Courts. If it is a violation of the 1st Amendment, that little bitter pill will come back to bite them in Circuit Court.

        • FAEN

They will also be taken to court for violating Title IX.

  • David From Canada

North Carolina is Jesse Helms country. No one should be surprised at this turn of events. The mentality there is dumb and dumber.

    • FAEN

As someone who lives in NC I would like to remind you that broad judgement is never a good thing. The city I live in is pro gay and pro equality. It is also a city that is progressive politically.

NC may have been Helms country at one point but that country is changing.

      • Lakeview Bob

Your state still elected this man governor.

        • FAEN

Yes they did. If you can figure out how to get Dems to come out and vote in off year elections I’m all ears because THAT is the only reason McCrory won. The opposition come out en masse even if it’s a vote for a seat on the school board. We only turn out when it’s an election for POTUS.

          • Ninja0980

Not to mention make some Dems understand that a Democrat in the South might not be as blue as they like but will still be miles ahead of any Republican.

          • FAEN

Thank you! I wish I could up vote that 1000 times. However, the Dems even in the South are beginning to move gradually to the left.

          • Ninja0980

Easier to due when the Republicans keep moving to the right.
As to the other point of my post, there were people comparing Kay Hagan to Thom Tillis and stating they were one and the same.
That is an utter joke, one we will sadly be paying for until 2021 at the earliest.

          • FAEN

Hagan could and should have won but as I said in a previous post she ran away from being a Dem and tried to get elected as Repulican Lite. The minute she did that there was blood in the water.

          • Ninja0980

Indeed.. I get why she did it but running away from your own party never works.
Too bad her uncle Lawton Chiles wasn’t still alive, he could have given her some pointers on that.

          • tcinsf

Ok, so you’re Democrats are stupid and lazy. You’re gonna have to do more to convince us that NC still isn’t Helms Country.

          • timncguy

It’s not just NC dems that didn’t vote in 2010 and 2014. How do you think the dems lost the US House and Senate????

          • FAEN

Since Dems tend not to vote in off year elections NATIONALLY I don’t think throwing around insults is the way to go.

      • timncguy

you may live in a progressive city. But, as of tonight, your local government has no power to enforce their progressive ideals.

        • FAEN

That angers me greatly. Thankfully the places we frequent are all pro LBGT but the thought that I live in a state where I could be refused service simply because I’m gay pisses me off and makes me want to fight harder against this BS.

    • Jguerr

don’t you mean dumber and dumberer? ( YYF )

    • Vista-Cruiser

I’ve written this other places today, but it merits repeating: this is a direct and foreseeable result of Democratic-leaning residents of North Carolina not bothering to vote back in 2010 and 2014.

  • Hank

What we need today is the equivalent of ACT UP to take on the current attacks of our GLBT Community’s CIVIL RIGHTS!!!

    • studd55

but, but we have HRC. Both of them.

  • Duane Dimitrov

He’s doing the “it’s just common sense” argument.

    Really?

  • bryan

And presumably each restroom will have its own genital inspectors..

    • Paula

They will probably use released convicts that found jeebus while in prison.

      • johncAtl

But I thought Ben Carson said they found Tom of Finland while in prison.

      • McSwagg

But only the ones with appropriate prior experience. You know, sex offenders.

    • Diogenes Onionpants

Weirdly, genital inspectors won’t do–the law’s too illogical even for that. A post-op transsexual who wants to be in compliance with the law would technically be required to produce a birth certificate to explain why she or he is in what is obviously the wrong bathroom.

      • peacfulseas inWA

        My passport won’t do?

        • FAEN

I’m sure your passport would be fine.

        • Dramphooey

Use it to escape while you can!

          • peacfulseas inWA

We’re 15minutes from the Canadian border and have contacts in BC don’t think we haven’t considered it. 2 gal pals of ours married Canadian women, one just received her Canadian citizenship just the other day.

      • m_lp_ql_m

        Can’t birth certificates be amended?

        • peacfulseas inWA

Mine was corrected. Born in California.

        • debbi

Ohio is one of several states that will not amend gender markers on birth certifcates. My drivers license, credit cards, Social Security etc have all been corrected but not the BC!

So,,, if I wanted to marry a man now it would have to be, in the eyes of Ohio, a same sex union.
          Oh well

      • Paula

The Government of NC will begin issuing official Biological Sex cards. All citizens will be required to report for DNA testing, so no men can go into the women’s restroom. You must show it to the bathroom police before you can pee.

        • studd55

They will hire certified “Christians” to check each person going into a bathroom and make a judgement call based on their “common sense” and the holy bible as to who belongs in which bathroom.

        • David Walker

Maybe NC should develop an all-purpose ID card. Oh…no. Those goddamned LGBTs would swap them around. No. Definitely need people for personal inspections.

        • McSwagg

To follow their line of (il)logic, they will soon come to the conclusion that only an appropriate tattooed symbol in either pink or blue will suffice.

    • Cuberly

It’s what makes me the most infuriated about this hate monger bullshit!

The utter toxicity of the hate is, ARGH! But the notion that a fucking sign, a god damn fucking sign is some sort of force field to protect legislators little girls from being harmed in a restroom?

If a criminal rapist wants to harm someone, when the fuck has a sign prevented that shit from going down?!?!?!?!? ARGH!

Gawd damn I hate these hater fucks!

Needing to pee is not a crime for fucks sake!

      http://g02.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1UbApIXXXXXaJXFXXq6xXFXXX2/20pcs-Funny-Alien-font-b-Toilet-b-font-font-b-Sign-b-font-Door-Sticker-Door.jpg

      • Brad Lathem

Make no mistake, they are not worried about little girls. Them saying otherwise is like a child with her hand in the cookie jar saying they weren’t grabbing a cookie. We know better and roll our eyes.

        • Cuberly

Fuck no. They’re attempting a soft cell “common sense” approach at legislating hatred. Gee, all lgbts are impacted. Wow, how’d that happen.

I fight for all peoples rights, cuz it’s a freakin domino. Once the hate starts it doesn’t stop.

          • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Soft cell? Does that refer to the state of the bigots’ neurons?

          • Cuberly

After all, they prefer their hater pablum devoid of information. Bland and easily consumed.

            The fuckers.

          • Cuberly

            Oops, sell. 😉

          • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

            hehehe ☺

          • studd55

            It’s for “safety”.

          • Cuberly

It’s for “safety” = Talibanjelicals desperate for a hook issue.

      • Octavio

Actually, this is a common sign on bathroom doors here in Nevada.

    • They will install TSA type scanners in front of public restrooms to do a genital check.

    • David Walker

Job creation…another something the republican’ts will brag about. Of course, the bothersome question of “who pays the johnny jobbers” will have to be addressed.

  • ColdCountry

Oh, you poor ignorant bastard. You will pay, but I doubt you’ll understand.

  • fuzzybits

All those people you decided weren’t humans beings with rights are taxpayers in your fucked up state!

  • Yixing’s Fluffer

I look forward to voting against this man in the general election. I hope Raleigh has an appointment with a power washer in November.

    • FAEN

Roy Cooper for Gov! Make sure you vote against Burr as well.

      • Christopher Smith

You should hear the real story of how that douche nozzle Burr first got elected.

        • FAEN

          Do tell.

          • Christopher Smith

His father was a well-known Presbyterian minister at the biggest, richest Pres church downtown. Unfortunately, Daddy was not only a closet case but kinda liked tearooms, park bathrooms, little boys, etc. They’d managed to conceal a couple of arrests but the wingnut fascists (PCA as opposed to PCUSA) in the church knew about this . When Dickwad (Richard Burr) first ran for office, the reactionaries in the church blackmailed Daddy into resigning the pastorship and retiring early–‘you don’t leave and let us ruin your nice progressive church, we spill the beans and Dickwad never gets elected dogcatcher.’ So he did, and Dickwad has been in power ever since. Sordid, isn’t it?

          • FAEN

            Fascinating!

  • Franciscan

There must be a better word for passing legislation that takes away constitutionally guaranteed rights such as equal protection of the laws. Can we call it “illegalization”? There was hope, you know, that the Jesse Helms era was over, but apparently a whole new generation has been sired to continue drinking the Kool-Aid.

  • timncguy

Earlier today NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent had this to say:

“Our commitment to the fair treatment of
all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,
has not changed and is at the core of our NCAA values,” NCAA spokeswoman
Gail Dent said. “It is our expectation that all people will be welcomed
and treated with respect in cities that host our NCAA championships and
    events.”

Let’s see if she honors her statement and cancels the “March Madness” College Basketball tourney events that are already scheduled to be hosted in Charlotte and Greensboro in 2017 and 2018.

Or, will she find a way to weasel out of it? What do you think?

    • FAEN

If enough big businesses start to apply pressure there is a chance the tournament gets moved or canceled. Aside from that I don’t see any other way.

      • Beagle

And college basketball is big in North Carolina. Very, very big.

      • McSwagg

They didn’t move it from Houston. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting.

  • teedofftaxpayer

What can we boycott in North Carolina? Do they even have anything there to boycott?

Well, any queen who thinks Thomasville makes cool furniture is already a fashion cripple. Can’t imagine buying anything manufactured by them. It’s Henry Miller, Etorre Sottass or just plain minimalist clean rooms with no furniture. R.C. Willey, you are the ruination of ‘Merikuh.

      • teedofftaxpayer

Well I don’t have Thomasville, I have early Goodwill. I guess I’m okay there. Wouldn’t buy from R.C. Willey since they represent the Mormon Church.

  • MikeBx2

So, North Carolina major corporations, what say you?

  • bkmn

If you fly American Airlines let them know you will not fly through their Charlotte hub. Make them feel it.

    • FAEN

IMVHO I think this calls for sit ins and protest until they can’t ignore us. We need to make a stink about this.

      • GeoffreyPS

I vote for flush ins. We need to gather up our FTM friends and have them hang out in the ladies rooms in NC. I would buy someone’s ticket to go to Charlotte and screw with them.

    • Doug105

If you don’t fly through then your going to have to go around costing more, so maybe not the best threat.

  • bkmn

If you are a regular at Lowes let them know you will not be shopping there any more.

I will be, fortunately I have other options nearby.
Anyone know how good Home Depot is in this regard?

      • Octavio

The founder/head of company is a big homophobe, but they have a big nondiscrimination clause in their employee handbook/human resources guide thingy.

I hope you told them why.

      • Cuberly

        Heck yeah.

Hendrick motorsports and lots of other NASCAR teams are based in North Carolina. This breaks my heart, but I am sticking to this…

What the fuck am I gonna do on Sundays now after almost 40 years of watching NASCAR?

Sorry, but I will not tune in this Sunday, as much as it is killing me to say so right now, until this nightmare is reversed.

I spend lots of money on NASCAR stuff and tickets, etc. Not anymore.

        You stand with JUSTICE!

      • JCF

Dear, Sweet Rebecca: it’s almost Opening Day, and the SF Giants play almost every Sunday! 😉 [Usually around 1:05PM. It’s a great accompaniment to brunch! :-D]

Seriously, you and me need to meet at AT&T Park sometime…

You’ll be better off, trust me. 😛 🙂

  • Blake J Butler

And this is why we can’t have nice things. Scratch that. This is why we can’t HAVE things.

And another reason that people need to show up to the polls, and kick people like Mccrory out of office.

Be careful Mccrory, actions do not come without consequences, and i believe that the free market may decide what is best for themselves what is best for their customers and their employees.

And no bipartisan does not count, when all republicans and only republicans touched this bill, and made it into law. so that would not be bipartisan Pat, that is partisan.

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme
      • Blake J Butler

Yes Patches!!!!! But I’d probably want one with a rainbow marijuana leaf, because I’m trying to get medicinal weed brought to Arkansas. They already have enough signatures to be on the ballot, but they have over 2 months left, so I want to help make history.

        • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

If progressive initiatives get the many apathetic and complacent progressives out to vote, bring them in. I wish you good luck with it.

          • Blake J Butler

Even in a state that is trying to move farther to the right, this issue is one that is becoming statewide acceptable. In 2012 a mirrored ballot measure was shot down by voters by only a 51-48 % margin and it failed that time, and a lot of the people that voted no were elderly folks, and im not sure that a lot of them that voted in 2012 will have the same views that elders had in 2016.

  • lukefromcanada

based on what I have seen on twitter since he signed this, the reaction will make the reaction to indianas law from last year seem like a slight wimper, prepare for fallout

Well damn, no reason to go to that state anymore … They need to do the right thing and give LGBT people in the state and exemption from paying state, local or sales tax …. like they do all of those churches.

They’ll come up with an amendment saying that you must dress, act, and look like a woman to enter the women’s restroom.

Manly looking Christian women will have to shave their mustaches, however sparse.

And the LGBT tax payers of North Caroloser will continue to fill his & the Reichpublicans bank account with their tax dollars as that not only refuse to work for, respect, & protect them, their rights, & their privacy but use that money to actually work to harm them, disrespect them, violate & deny their rights & their privacy.

“the basic expectation of privacy in the most personal of settings” unless you are transgender, then your privacy is only what other people decide for you.

“radical breach of trust and security under the false argument of equal access not only impacts the citizens of Charlotte but people who come to Charlotte to work, visit or play.” excluding the transgender citizens of Charlotte & the transgender people who go to Charlotte to work, visit, or play. The Charlotte law protected them from being forced into situations in which they would be raped, beaten, bullied, or killed because they were in the REST(not bath)/locker room of the gender on the birth certificate instead of the gender they identify as & clearly look/dress as.

The ordinance NEVER allowed men to use women’s rest/locker rooms. It only allowed transgender women to use women’s rest/locker rooms & transgender men to use men’s rest/locker rooms. Unless you are looking under the women’s skirts & in the men’s zippers not one person knows what’s what or if they are even post-op.

“I signed…to stop the breach of basic privacy.. ensure privacy in bath (educated people call them rest) rooms and locker rooms”…… unless you are transgender, then it is privacy as we demand not as you need. Your privacy will not be ensured but we still expect you to pay taxes for that privacy.

As for that “and no person may bring any civil action based upon the public policy expressed herein”…. Now THAT is overreach by those who would pretend to act like rulers instead of the servants the legally binding oath they took says they are. It’s a violation of the 1st, 5th & 14th amendments. Every American citizen, regardless of what state they live in, has a right to file federal civil charges against any policy that violates their federal constitutional rights & as the 14th amendment mandates the 10th amendment has no power over federal civil rights violations.

The LGBT citizens need to stop allowing their employees to be insubordinate INGRATES. They work for you, so put them in their place.

How is a locker room private when there might be several or dozens of people in there? And if they are straight men, they will all be discretely (or not so discretely) checking out each other’s equipment to see who is the ‘most manly’.

It doesn’t seem like it would cost that much to fly in a bunch of transmen and transwomen who would be willing to be the face of this ridiculous bathroom issue.

All we need is Buck Angel (or similar, sorry, he’s the first name that comes to mind) getting arrested for using the women’s washroom as this bill requires to quickly expose the hypocrisy. And since news loves a story with a visual, this will insure blanket coverage.

    • April

So true. Get a bunch of beefy, bearded transmen plus the local media and gather at the state capital building and lawfully use the ladies room. Show how stupid this law is.

I was civil a couple of days ago. Today, (when they thanked me for commenting), “As your bigoted Republican legislature and spineless governor have done even *more* than they threatened to do, I will do my best to boycott anything and everything “North Carolina”.

My local Chamber of Commerce (and state tourism folks) would *NEVER* support such an action.

You might want to spend a few minutes reading these comments [some links to stories such as this one]. North Carolina deserves *every word* of the bad press it will be getting.”

      • Cosmo Tupper

Granted, but being nasty does NOT help our cause at all. It just validates their reasoning for discrimination and bigotry…and our “vileness”.

        • TrollopeReader

My level of “nasty” is about 0.273 % of other’s level of nasty. Of course, being “nasty” seems to have propelled Trump into first place, Rs winning the US Senate and keeping the House, but whatevs, whatevs.

  • rednekokie

Not really for me to say — I wouldn’t go to North Carolina to save myself from the fires of hell, if there even were such a place.
However, it is a shame to know that an entire state is so full of “men” who are ashamed to show their pee pees when a supposedly opposite gender is around — one wonders how they even reproduce themselves.
    Hmmm. probably best they don’t.

Oh he’s going to get screwed when I take him and the entire state to court . Not only do I plan on seeking their legislative law to get overturned, I am also going to sue them for a waste of taxpayer dollars for calling an emergency session and wasting so much money over something that simply discriminates against people. He could’ve easily left the LGBT basic rights intact that give people equal rights for housing, jobs, etc. etc. and just left the bathroom part out. They could’ve just passed a law saying that no city or county can pass laws regarding bathrooms and transgendered people…. That would have been an effective compromise. LGBT people would get equal rights in all places – except the bathrooms for transgender’s which is a whole Nother issue, and they would’ve been happy because their bathrooms would’ve been protected – at least for now, but had to go and screw over all rights for all LGBT people

  • TallBearNC

Looks like it is time for me to contact my lawyer and Sue my own state

  • Cosmo Tupper

They seem to forget that gay people go to public restrooms. Aren’t they concerned that a gay man goes into a men’s restroom? Or a lesbian goes into a women’s restroom. Based on their mentality, what really needs to happen to “protect” all concerned is have restrooms marked as follows: “I like dick” or “I like vagina”. So all that like dick (gay men/ straight women) go into the vagina restroom and all that like vagina (lesbians/ straight men) go into the dick restroom. For those of you who like both, well I guess you will just have to go on the street and stay out of ALL restrooms.

  • fuow

A heartfelt fuck-you to all you A-List-Fags who keep insisting that our transgender brothers and sisters don’t need protection. What charming people you are.
I’m old enough to remember when Aids first hit our gay communities. Next to gay men’s mothers, the people who helped us the most? Our transgender brothers and sisters. Those who threaten them hate us equally.

Why do Southerners have this innate need to discriminate and hate? (Ok, I know not all Southerners. Just the ones who prefer not to live in modern times.)

    • David Walker

Unfortunately, Pablo, it’s not just Southerners. We seem to be universally hated, thanks to The Truly Religious. Pennsylvania is at some point going to address the laws that conveniently ignore us when it comes to discrimination…jobs, services, accommodations, housing. It will be neither easy nor pretty and, frankly, there is no overwhelming sense that we’ll win.

  • Gerry Fisher

Yeah, it’s “common sense” to prevent physically obvious men (Buck Angel) and women (Laverne Cox) from using the appropriate bathroom (bathrooms they’re probably already using, by the way). It’s “common sense” to allow LGBT discrimination, and to turn a blind eye to trans kids killing themselves. It’s common sense to pass a law identical to the one the Supreme Court already deemed unconstitutional, wasting tons of time and money. I sure as hell hope that your “common sense” isn’t too common. [grumble, grumble, grumble]

  • Stubenville

Others below may have already said it, but this is why it’s crucial to vote in state and local elections, folks.

  • The problem with “common sense” is that it’s the non-sense of the common person, and not based in either logic or facts.
