BREAKING: Ali Forney Center Wants The Harlem Hate Church And A Fundraiser Has Been Launched

Yesterday we learned that Harlem’s infamous “Jesus Would Stone Homos” hate church has been ordered to public auction due to over $1M in unpaid bills. Many of you here on JMG immediately suggested that the community rally to buy the property for the Ali Forney Center. You may be able to help that dream come true. AFC founder Carl Siciliano tells us about the campaign:

“The biggest reason our youths are driven from their homes is because of homophobic and transphobic religious beliefs of their parents. Because of this, it has been horrifying for us to have our youths exposed to Manning’s messages inciting hatred and violence against our community. It has meant the world to us that so many Harlem residents have stood up to support our young people, and are now urging us to provide urgently needed care at the site of so much hatred. If we are able to obtain the space it would truly be a triumph of love over hatred.”

More from the campaign page:

AFC whose Harlem based programs provide 50,000 meals a year for homeless LGBT youth and offers interventions such as medical and mental health care, case management, educational and career services plans to utilize the Atlah site to provide housing to LGBT youths. AFC also plans to launch a catering business run and operated by its clients.

AFC hopes to raise at least $200K through an initial public fundraising effort, and will seek to leverage those funds to obtain additional support from local government, major donors and foundations. If the Ali Forney Center is not able to obtain the building, it commits to utilize any funds raised to increase its housing and vocational services for homeless LGBT youth in another site.

From Harlem Against Hate’s Stacy Parker Le Melle:

“When the ATLAH story broke on Thursday, immediately I heard from neighbors: wouldn’t it be amazing if an LGBT group could acquire the property? What if it were the Ali Forney Center? We all knew that this would be poetic justice. We need to care for those kicked out of homes, often on religious-based grounds. We need to care for those most vulnerable to ATLAH’s hate speech.”

Ali Forney operates a 24-hour drop-in center just a few blocks from the ATLAH property and it serves over 1000 LGBT youths annually. The JMG community has been incredibly generous to Ali Forney Center over the years, which Carl regularly acknowledges both in person to me and at Ali Forney events. As noted above, not one penny you donate to this latest endeavor will be “wasted” if the ATLAH purchase doesn’t go through. We can do this.

I’ve already donated and wish it could have been more. We CAN do this!!

  • j.martindale

    I will pitch in $100.

    • Randy503

      I can do $10.

      • Bad Tom

Whatever you can do, is good enough!

      • StraightGrandmother

Your $10 will inspire others who are not also in a position to make a big contribution to give something. Your $10 will inspire others to make a contribution even if it is not a large one. Your $10 counts!

        • charemor

StraughtGrandmother, if you are truly straight, your presence and comments here are truly an inspiration. JMG is indeed a wonderful community united in compassion, like minded thinking and lots of humor. This is one of my favorite internet sites.

  • MikeBx2

I know it’s only January, but I’ve a feeling this will be the best donation I’ll make all year.

    • Mark

For some reason (someone’s peeling those darn onions again) it brings tears to my eyes.

    • Brad Lathem

I still look forward to putting some money toward electing a democratic president.

    • j.martindale

Many of us aren’t religious. We don’t “tithe” to some church. If they can put that kind of money into some superstitious cult, hopefully we can put a few bucks into a cause that is humanitarian.

      • sw42

When Scrooge said to the ghost of Jacob Marley, “you were always a good man of business”, Marley said, “Mankind should be our business. But we seldom attend to it.” We are attending to it here. This is great!

  • Judas Peckerwood

Oh man, that would be SWEET!

  • Mark

Can someone do updates on how much they’ve been able to gather? I’d love to know!

    • JoeMyGod

I’ve asked Carl about getting us a “donations to date” widget.

      • Mark

Ah great! Thanks for doing this Joe – really appreciate it…

      • Gene

        Thanks for this Joe.
You made this place. Its kind of become a community.
Now, its time we all do what we can and prove it is.
Let the fundys and angry old white guys bitch and kvetch about immigrants and uppity women and…us.
In the meantime, we will be coming together to raise money to save the kids they ignore…the ones they sometimes kick out.
        Again..Thanks

Give what you can! It may not be enough to get a building, but it may be enough to help a kid through some hard times.

    • Jenni

Doing the same! Money is pretty tight for me right now, but I have a home and food in the cupboards. That means I can give a little to those who don’t. For SUCH an amazing idea. Thanks Joe for bringing this to the forefront!

          • Phillip in L.A.

            Just an ounce?! ;}

          • We grew up being taught you start with the sage to remove what’s out of balance and then you use the sweet grass to “fill up” the space with a blessing. When I’m asked to do a formal purification ceremony I’ll also add cedar and some of the golden aspen leaves I’ve gathered at the end of our Feast Day at the Pueblo–I think of them the way many Catholics will take home a palm leaf on Palm Sunday as a sort of protection.

          • Mark

NM Pueblo? I’m descended from eastern US traditions — all essentially accomplishing the same end — just a big of a different approach?

I currently live adjacent a pueblo in northern NM.

          • In my experience different Native Nations have different traditions, but I think of it like going into a Baptist Church or a Lutheran one. They may sing different hymns, but the intentions are the same. Just so, I think it’s more about what’s available since Native people tend to be extremely pragmatic. For example, my Lakota lover (may he rest in peace) was always asking me to mail him cedar leaves to use in his sweatlodge since in the Seattle area we were rich in cedar, but not so much in South Dakota. In the same way, the sweet grass we’re discussing isn’t native to the PNW Coastal area, but we had a marsh based “sweet grass” that is used in making baskets, but not burned as an incense. Fortunately, whenever I traveled, people were always gifting me sweet grass and sage.
Particularly in Canada, people would often shake my hand and place a bag of cigarette tobacco into my palm. I would often watch a Native man get ready to use a powwow drum and if he didn’t have any loose tobacco he’d take a cigarette, break it apart and sprinkle the tobacco on the drum as a type of prayer.
In the Longhouse of the 7 Drums, in my mom’s tradition, we didn’t use smudges, but the tradition was our medicine songs would do the same thing. However, while singing, the “patient” would have his or her “spirit body” brushed by the hands of the Indian doctor while the singing continued. This might also involve the use of water. One of my aunts would dip her fingers into a glass of water and then the hair of the patient would be dampened during the singing. My Uncle Felix had the spirit power of Frog. During a ceremony he’d take a sip of water and atomize it by blowing it out. It was always amazing to watch because the patient would be surrounded by a mist. I was always worried if I did it I’d just spit on the poor patient. But again–I think the intentions are the same, whether it’s sage smudge or water. The focus is on getting the “Tsiticmuch” (closest translation I can think of is “spiritual pollution” since English doen’t have the same concepts) off the patient.
My father’s reservation is Taos Pueblo, although I’ve spent time on other Pueblo reservations. πŸ™‚

          • BuffaloDan

Permission to borrow the sweet grass tradition, if I may offer that my _strega_ grandmother instilled in me to always affix snapdragons to the mirrors. It “bounces things back.”
As she always said, in an Italian-cum-New-York-State accent: “Who’s it gonna hurt?”
            So, well, why not?!

          • Re: Harlem Hate Pastor–even a crooked log can make a straight fire.
I hadn’t heard of the snapdragon tradition. I always loved snapdragons, but they never seemed to do well for me in Seattle and I rarely see them here in Arizona. I used to see them a lot when I was attending college in Florida. I always enjoyed them and now I have another reason to as well πŸ™‚

Zelda Rubinstein was a huge supporter and activist in the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis. If she were alive, she would be the ideal person to wash this place of evil. Heck, Her spirit will come back and banish anything that’s there now!

    • Jimmie Z

Joe, if this project reaches fruition, we all will nominate you for a lifetime achievement award.

To me it will make more sense if there is an eldergay housing component (if the building is big enough), as they could help mentor the youngergays.

On the contrary, it looks to be at least 50 feet by 100 feet. That translates into 5000 square feet per floor. Multiply that by five floors (including the basement) and you have 25,000 square feet.

          Here’s a photo with a different perspective.

Hey Joe, does Carl know about smile.amazon.com?

They have a program where people can have 0.5% of each purchase go to the charity of their choice. I checked at amazon and I didn’t see AFC in their list of charities.

I checked with Amazon and there’s a request form to fill out to be included in the list of charities. I’m pretty sure a fair number of JMGers would love to have this included @ Amazon.

This is the link for charities to use to request to be included in the smile.amazon program.

I just want to see the fuckers sink to the bottom of the sea.

I mean, clearly this dude is the usual religious grifter. A kind of low-rent Creflo Dollar, but nastier.

Still … this kind of Bible banging stirs up trouble for our kind, and anything I can do to marginalize I will do.

  • Ninja0980

The hubby and I will be making a donation first thing Monday morning and it will be one well spent.

  • Ninja0980

Shelters like this are badly needed, even in the Blue states.
Here’s hoping the goal is reached and we can remake a place of hate into a place of joy for people who so badly need it.

When the last snow storm hit NYC my first thought was how will AFC be affected. If this space is in a more secure area that will be icing on the cake. If this is freezable and good I am in!

Woohoo!!!!!!!! Love is the answer. Truer words were never spoken. And what a lasting legacy to bestow upon this poor building after having to suffer under the fumarole that was Whats-His-Face.

Just made a donation. And, because they have waaaaay more money than I will ever dream of having, I just posted the following request on Starbucks’ “Contact Us” page, using the “Donations” option:

The ATLAH Church in Harlem is on the auction block. As you probably know, this is the church whose pastor has propagated anti-LGBT hatred from his pulpit and has also slandered Starbucks by claiming that your latte includes … um … certain ingredients that might not be included in your advertisements.

There is now a fundraising campaign underway by the Ali Forney Center of New York to purchase the building and repurpose it as a venue for badly-needed services for homeless LGBT youth.

I hope you will consider making a sizable contribution to this worthy effort, particularly since the Starbucks brand is such a part of the story.

    http://www.aliforneycenter.org/

Anyone else want to hit up Starbucks, too? Maybe if we bombard them with requests, they’ll notice.

    • teeveedub

      Here’s the link:

You can choose “Donation or sponsorship request” from the “Choose a general topic” drop-down.

      • David Milley

        Done!

      • StraightGrandmother

Many thanks that is just what I did, I used the drop down menu and submitted this as a donation request, and here is what I wrote.

The Ali Forney Center in NYC started a fund drive to raise funds to buy the Hateful ATLA Church who says that Starbucks puts gay semen in their coffee. Let’s all help let Love conquer Hate. I donated $32 in memory of the 32 Mormon Teens who have committed suicide since the Mormon Church put in their new policy in November calling gay people “Apostates”. THIRTY TWO Gay & Transgender Mormon Teens have killed themselves just since November, aged 14 to 20 with the average age of only 17 years old. Let them run to New York to a safe haven at the Ali Forney Center which provides shelter for LGBT youth.

You, especially you of so many on this page, are an angel. Thank you for remembering those 32 youths.

        • StraightGrandmother

Starbucks wrote back to me, this is what they said

Thank you for contacting Starbucks. I just finished reading your email and appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with us.

I’m so sorry to hear about everything Mormon teens are going through, and I hope that the Ali Forney Center continues to be a safe haven for so many troubled teens, it’s a wonderful thing to make such a difference and to be a beacon to those so desperately in need of love and understanding, congratulations on these milestones and your continued success.

Unfortunately, at this time, Starbucks is not seeking opportunities for national or local partnerships or sponsorships. In addition, we are not accepting product or in-kind requests. We continue to remain focused on funding communities through grants from The Starbucks Foundation programs and our stores local involvement in their communities.

          • Phillip in L.A.

You watch, Starbucks will be at the auction–but only to buy this building for their own nefarious purposes

    • StraightGrandmother

This is a great idea. I contributed to the funding drive but I can contact Starbucks also, and I will. The Flying Monkeys are so creative, that is one thing I like about you.

    • TuuxKabin

      You are a good activist!

    • Roger

      BRILLIANT!!

    • Todd Allis

Great idea! After I donated, I wrote:

Hello! I would love if you could make a donation to help the Ali Forney Center, which helps homeless LGBT youth, purchase the former Atlah Worldwide Church property. As you may have heard, Atlah claimed Starbucks lattes include a… human ingredient, and preached hatred for LGBT people. I made a donation. If you could help, that would be great! Thanks. Their donation site: https://aliforneycenter.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.event&eventID=531

  • StraightGrandmother

I donated in memory of the 32 Mormon Teens who have competed suicide since the new policy of the Mormon Church was issued in November. They are killing themselves, they’re killing themselves. I can help give them a safe place, and I did so. Their average age is only 17 years old

But in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of nationwide marriage equality, the church took a major step backward. In the policy released Nov. 5, the church relegated same-sex couples to thesame status as those in polygamous marriages, labeling them “apostates,” a term for those who’ve renounced their faith. The policy also bars the children of same-sex parents from becoming full members ofthe church until they turn 18, disavow their parents’ relationship, andleave the household.

The new policy prompted thousands to leave the church in protest. Then, earlier this month, the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Russell M. Nelson, declared that the policy was a revelation from God to LDS President Thomas S. Monson, which elevated it to the status of church doctrine. Nelson is next in line to become church president, and his wife later said that LGBT people could “repent” and have their “sexual feelings be in harmony” with God’s law.

It breaks my heart what “religion” is doing to our youth. I do trust there is a special place in “their hell” where they will be severely punished for their hatred. Me personally, I am a firm believer in karma and past lives, so….

    • Stev84

The Mormon gerontocracy is probably celebrating. They can now point to that as “proof” that being gay is bad for your health and that people should just stop being gay or they will end up depressed.

    • Ron Robertson

I see their policy is having their intended result. May the ones who pushed this forever burn in the hell that doesn’t even exist, except inside them.

      • StraightGrandmother

Isn’t that amazing? God told this random Mormon guy in Utah that Gays are Apostates. Right from God’s lips the the Apostle’s ears.

Heck, I don’t know what I would have done if my parents had rejected and I’m thankful I never had to find out.
Screw people who use religion as a weapon to hurt others, screw them all.

    • Treg.Brown

Thank you SGM. Donating all of tonight’s tips. I’m still a student but I have a roof over my head, food, and parents who support who I am. It’s the least I can do.

Oh wait. No, PRAYING would be the least we can do. Let’s all step up as we can.

    • Ninja0980

Whenever I read stuff like this, I’m thankful that I had the parents I have.
When the pastor at my church told my mom that I was a sinner, she swore for one of the only times in her life at him.
She and my dad left that day and never looked back.
They now go to a LGBT supportive church and are happier for it.

  • DaddyRay

  • thatotherjean

Done. I’m happy to help to deliver a thump of poetic justice to hateful, deadbeat Pastor James David Manning and see his building put to infinitely better use.

  • catherinecc

It’s a great idea, but it will get the religious psychotics riled up and potentially violent.

    • DaddyRay

      When aren’t they riled up

      • Nychta

And when aren’t they potentially violent?

    • Bluto

Generously helping the AFC buy this den of hate & transforming it into a safe & loving outpost for children is taking the high road. Fuck the religious psychotics, I’m not rolling over to appease their shitty god.

    • well it certainly pays to be vigilant but I would say they are there already. If he makes threats a restraining order would be in order.

    • BlueberriesForMe

“Pastor” Manning and his acolytes will hole up inside like the Oregon “militia men”. Should we start sending them bags of dicks ahead of time? Wouldn’t want them to run out, particular on Sundays.

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

A bit of money just flew in from the Northern Realm. The Bear and I certainly hope this happens for our young gaylings in need of a safe place.

We also enjoy, in anticipation, the delicious karma that may encounter Manning in the process.

  • Stubenville

That batshit crazy pastor will probably burn the building down.

    • LADY MABELINE

That would help in saving demo costs.

    • BlueberriesForMe

He’s going to hole up in there with his “militia”. Start sending in the bags of dicks now so they don’t run out.

    • charemor

If so, I hope that he is in it when it goes down.

  • kelven

We need to get this in front of someone like Ellen or Oprah. If someone like that gives it a plug, it’s a done deal. As for me, I’m dead broke right now, but I should be getting my return before the 24th so I’ll be able to donate which makes me happy. Poetic justice indeed!

    • DaddyRay

Shout it from the rooftops if we have to

  • Alan43

Oh please let this come true!

Hoping plenty of others join us in donating

  • David Milley

Hubby and me, in for a hundred. And now, to share this page out there on them social media …

    • David Milley

Here’s my Facebook post. Feel free to copy, update and emend, and promulgate:

      Hey all!

This is the best fundraising effort I’ve seen in a while! In Harlem, there’s a church whose pastor whose mission for years has been to terrorize LGBTQ people, with a succession of hate-filled sermons, promoted in startingly offensive messages on his church sign.

Well, this charlatan hasn’t paid his bills, and his “church” is going up for public auction.

Meanwhile, nearby, the Ali Forney Center has quietly been providing support services to homeless LGBTQ youth, many of whom were kicked out of their homes by parents with religiously-based hatred.

The Ali Fourney Center’s neighbors — and anybody else who knows about them — is urging them to bid on this property when it is sold, as poetic justice. The Center is responding. If they can acquire the property, they will convert it safe housing for LGBTQ youth and a training center to help them find work.

Here’s more information about this at Joe Jervis’ blog:

      http://www.joemygod.com/2016/01/29/breaking-ali-forney-center-wants-the-harlem-hate-church-and-a-fundraiser-has-been-launched/

And here’s a link to the Ali Forney Center to donate to this effort:

      https://aliforneycenter.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.event&eventID=531

And if the bid falls through, the donations will still be used to help homeless youth directly. The Ali Forney Center is one of the good guys!

  • BlueberriesForMe

Like the 13th fairy in “Sleeping Beauty”, I’m going to throw a little rain on the parade.
Just because the property has been commanded to go to “auction” doesn’t mean it’s actually going to happen. (See: foreclosures, etc.) That said, if this actually DID happen, obviously that would be great. I’ll certainly make a donation and hope that even if this doesn’t come off, AFC will be able to use the $ donated for something else. What we really need is someone like Tim Cook? from Apple to donate a couple of million bucks for this project – chump change, I’m sure. Anyone have any networking contacts for someone like that?

    • BlueberriesForMe

I also wonder what the real value of the land the building sits on is worth.
For some developer, $1M is a drop in the bucket vs. the $ they would make in building something else there.

      • TuuxKabin

If it’s Landmarked, it should be safe. It looks like it has the qualifications for Landmark status, as well as the buildings arouond it.

        • BlueberriesForMe

Yes, I noticed that as well. Brownstone-y one way or another.

          • ColdCountry

            It is landmarked.

    • kelven

Ah, but we control the weather and all kinds of supernatural and magical things are attributed to us! A building is nothing! Seriously, I get what you are saying, there are still a lot of ifs to clear, but don’t underestimate the power of people with a passionate focus.

      • BlueberriesForMe

I know what you mean. At its most basic level, the fact that this “church” would have to give up this property is the height of something-or-other. Obviously, the Lard is not pleased, once again.

I don’t know how much publicity it has outside its own neighborhood (and awareness made by JMG) but if nothing else, “you can’t make this stuff up”. :=).

I just hope it’s a “feel-good” (or better) story with a happy ending.
PS I think, in the original “Sleeping Beauty”, the 13th fairy exploded into little pieces because she got so pissed off that S.B. went and got “happily after ever”.

        • kelven

I can think of a few ogre types (who have been the bane of our community) that I would enjoy seeing that happen to. Starting with that hateful “pastor”.

    • JoeMyGod

All valid points, yes. But as you also pointed out and as AFC does above, every penny of this drive will go into funding their next shelter even if this one doesn’t happen. There’s no down side.

EDIT: I should have mentioned for those unaware that Ali Forney actually runs several housing locations around the city in addition to their main 24-hour drop-in center in Harlem. They’re about to open Bea Arthur House in the East Village. Ms. Arthur bequeathed a nice chunk of change to AFC.

      • BlueberriesForMe

You speak the truth, Daddy, and not for the 1st time :=).
Do you know anyone at HRC who might be persuaded to
make a donation? One less “gala” and a lot more helping
people who actually need it. What a concept!

  • Nychta

Did you know AFC has an Amazon wish list? I’ll donate some $$ for the infrastructure, but it’s nice to know I can also go to Amazon and help them get other things they need.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/QMLEI6NWOW47/ref=cm_wl_rlist_go_v?

    • DaddyRay

Nice way to use that Amazon Gift card I got for Christmas

      • KCMC

yes. work kid on my caseload used/traded his xmas Amazon card for weed. Story still makes me laugh.
Slightly miffed at my fundie evangelical brother, I found quick holiday shopping in new inflatable vibrating toy with his gift card. OH.Amazon.

    • kelven

They’ve been my designated charity since the last time someone mentioned it. I just recently got this season of Agent Carter, and just a few weeks ago got something for my sister in law. It’s really cool knowing things you spend money on anyway contribute a bit to a good cause.

      • StraightGrandmother

I buy a ton of stuff from Amaon. Is there some way that my Amazon purchases can also make a contribution to the Ali Forny Center? How does that work? I seem to remember a flash screen when placing Amazon orders which I always ignore.

        • kelven

Yes, once you register, you just make sure you are always on your smile page and ANYTHING you can buy normally on Amazon routes your payment through the smile account. How cool is that?

          • StraightGrandmother

Oh I’ll go find that and use that next time. I’ll remember that the SMILE account at Amazon.

        • Circ09

Just make sure you are at smile.amazon.com before you purchase. I occasionally forget and log in to the regular Amazon page.

          • StraightGrandmother

            thank you for the URL
            smile.amazon.com

          • kelven

Yeah, I did that once or twice at first, but now I use my smile page as my Amazon bookmark.

          • Cuberly

Yep, had to remove my old Amazon links to be sure I was using the smile.amazon link.

I looked for the AFC in their charity list but didn’t see it.

          • BlueberriesForMe

Yes, use “Ali Forney Center” for the search.

          • Circ09

I had to type in AFC New York, NY before it popped up. I’m not sure why. It didn’t show for me using Ali Forney.

          • The Larry Mac

If you use Chrome as your browser, there’s an extension “Smile Always” that will automatically take you to the Smile page for any Amazon link. I’d imagine there is similar functionality available for Firefox.

          • bJason

Thanks for this tip. Just added to my browser.

        • johncAtl

Cuberly just posted that AFC is now an option when you order through smile.amazon.com. I’ve been using smile.amazon.com and donating to AIDS services organizations in Atlanta for a couple of years.

          • Cuberly

Oops, nope, I actually don’t see them there. I think AFC has to apply to be listed in the charities.

I think some people are confusing the AFC wishlist with the smile.amazon program. I did searches for AFC using their whole name as well as their initials and nothing came up.

I sent Joe a link for Carl to apply to be included in the list. Hopefully that gets to Carl. I’d add them to my list of revolving smile.amazon charities.

          • StraightGrandmother

Nice research work that we are all benefiting from.

          • Cuberly

Good news, AFC is on smile.amazon

Here’s the screen cap of how they’re listed.

Amazon has a charity link where you can automatically donate a small percentage of your purchases to the charity of your choice. Unfortunately I didn’t see Ali Fourney Center included in their list of charities. Currently I have People For the American Way Foundation as my designated charity.

Going to email them to see if they can add AFC to their list of charities. I’ll see how that goes.

      • BlueberriesForMe

I have them (AFC) as mine in re: to Amazon. I’ll see if I can find the right link.

        • Cuberly

Do they just use their initials? Maybe that’s where I screwed up.

          • BlueberriesForMe

I’m not sure. I’ll check again.

          • BlueberriesForMe

I’m guessing this has to be done on the “smile.amazon.com” page and you’re logged in to your account.

If you go into the “Your Account” section, there should be a “Settings” area – in mine, there is a link “Change Your Charity”. I’m assuming if you don’t have one designated then yours might read “Choose a Charity” or similar. Then if you go to that link you can do a search for which charity you want.
(“Or pick your own charitable organization”) and search for “Ali Forney”).

          • Cuberly

I’m embarrassed, I think I misspelled the name. Well, now I know.

            Muchas gracias! πŸ˜‰

            You’re very welcome, Twinkie Moses.

          • Reality.Bites

I found it by searching on AFC. It was on the second or third page of charities. I was completely unaware of smile.amazon.com. While most of my amazon shopping is done on amazon.ca, which does not offer it, I occasionally use the US site.

          • Cuberly

I figured it out, eventually. With help, surprise there….ha!

Glad to see they’re listed there. Between Planned Parenthood, People for the American Way Foundation and AFC I’ll be busy spreading my purchases out.

      • ColdCountry

They’re in there. I’ve selected them, too.

        • Cuberly

Are you referring to their wish list or the smile.amazon program.

          • ColdCountry

            The smile site.

        • Cuberly

Could you post a screen cap of them in the charity list, I’m wondering if their listed name is different, compared to what I’ve been searching on.

          • ColdCountry

I can’t seem to get a list, but if you go to smile.amazon.com, they have a search box. You can pull it up with Ali Forney Center.

          • Cuberly

I found it, I think I was misspelling the name. Dang dyslexia! DOH!

Thanks for the link Joe. Chipped in $100. I know it’s a drop in the bucket, but as a community we can make a big difference.

  • Ninja0980

For those worried about the threats of violence, let me remind you that the battle for marriage equality here was long and very, very, VERY ugly.
To give you an idea of what it was like, a group of bigots bused in by NOM and the FOTF hate group for New York, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms held hate rallies all across the state leading up to the 2011 vote.
Because unlike 09, they knew it had a good chance of passing and if it did, that would be a game changer due to the population of New York and the influence of New York City.
Thus, (as Joe and others could tell you), we got to see any and all vile signs.
Several members of my family as well as my husband’s got the “pleasure” of seeing signs stating it was okay for us to be murdered because the bible sanctions it.
Despite all of that hatred, we stood strong and won.
We will do the same here.
We can make a place of hate into a place of hope.

    • very well said indeed!!

This is exciting news! Following the lead of others, I’ve contributed $50. I was telling my partner about this, and he asked why he hadn’t heard about Atlah Church in any mainstream news. I explained that this is the only place I have seen it covered. Thank you, Joe, for all you do.

What does real estate in that area sell for?

The city of New York should buy the building for them, considering how much good AFC does. Do we have any people here with connections at the city hall?

  • djcoastermark

I love the idea of the campaign, however, I do have a question that maybe someone familiar with NY laws might answer. What if the “church” files bankrupt at the last minute? Right now in St Pete, we have a case of a crack hotel that was scheduled to be foreclosed on and auctioned off, but the day before the auction, the hotels owners filed, thus stopping the sale, effectively tying it up in the courts for a long time to come. Could this happen there also ?

  • sdnative1958

Would never have known about any of this without being a regular reader of JoeMyGod. This. Is. Excellent.

  • William

Those kids deserve an attic to roller skate in more than I do. I hope they get the building.

  • kevin000

It was a pleasure to donate to such a good cause.

  • David Walker

This has made me repurpose the tissues beside the computer. This evening has generated tears of joy that so many JMGers have banded together to make this idea come true. I am so fucking proud to be part of this tribe. It’s also made me cry about the kids, the young people all over the US who have been thrown out of their homes and into the streets because their stupid parents believe “people” like this Manning fuck. And StraightGrandmother’s statement about the 32 kids in Utah…I had no idea. How infuriatingly sad.

Unfortunately, it also makes me aware of the money that is not in our bank account and won’t be until Monday…and the payments that are committed to that. It makes me feel awful that I so believe in this, that I so love this turn of events, that I want to give AFC and centers all over the country a zillion dollars and instead have to sit here and figure out how to give $10 or $15. As Roxie said in “Chicago,” “I never intended to get this old.”

Thank you all for rallying to help change the building from a place that spread hate to a place that will spread help and love and hope. I’m so glad I found JMG, I’m grateful I now know so many wonderful and fascinating and engaged and interesting people…and now people I can admire because of what you’re doing and how you’ve just jumped on this opportunity to show the difference between us and them. I look forward to joining you on Monday. Feel good, JMGers. Feel very good. $25,000 in 4 hours? You make an old fart proud.

    • LonelyLiberal

You don’t happen to have the cash but are with everybody in spirit?

I think most of us would agree that it still means you’re with us.

Edited to add: One thing you might do with your good will is to forward this via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, or smoke signal to people you know who might be interested. Even if you don’t have the cash, so what? A moment or two of your time could be even more valuable in the final analysis!

They said we’re authorized to pay you the 500 so I said fine whatevz. I was gonna put it to retiring some of my Xmas debts, but then along comes THIS. By signing the check to the order of Ali Forney and mailing it to Carl Siciliano stat, it will (a) make my happy holidays even happier, and (b) the fact that the $ comes from Oklahoma is just lagniappe. Best of all is that ATLAH will learn that it’s us fagz who are “manning” their exit door!…

After buying a dozen beignets at CafΓ© du Monde, I asked the mega-hot guy behind the counter what it meant. He thought for a moment, then just smiled, opened my bag, and dropped in a 13th for free. I did the one time donation (both times I donated) but was considering the monthly donation since there will be additional ongoing expenses if they do get the building. Haha! Of course, of course. I never post my “serious” email account online, which is why I wrote my disclaimer note. But thanks for your concern! πŸ˜‰

      The Lard is good!

If this works out I would suggest hiring a good security firm to watch the place once Manning has vacated it. I wouldn’t put it past him to have some of his goons firebomb the place if he knows he can’t keep it himself.

    • Friday

I wouldn’t either, the question is if and how deluded he might be about those goons he keeps threatening people with. πŸ™‚

    • Homo Erectus

My first thought was that he will probably do some serious damage to the place. He genuinely hates the gayz and he wouldn’t want us to have it.

  • Irishsupporter

Please god, let the Ali Forney Center get the building, they will turn it what is a place of hate and bigotry (and an evil misuse of gods word) into a place of acceptance and help for gay people!!

    It would be so appropriate!!

  • bryan

This is enough schadenfreude to keep me going for the year. Even though I am sure more is coming for these fundamentalist haters. I will help spread the word. Well done, JMG community.

  • If The Oatmeal was able to get State grants to buy the Tesla Lab, I’d imagine this site is eligible as well, considering it was built in the 1890s and was the original Harlem Social Club, which I’d imagine was more inclusive than the current itteration. Definitely look into a state grant to help fund the purchase of this building.

  • chris james

Oh the irony of bringing that building into the LGBTQ fold…let’s do it!!!

  • Mike Solo

First time I’ve ever donated through a joe my god link. Better now than never! Β£20 from Scotland!

I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to donate to such a worthy cause in my life. Done and donated.

  • Gigi

They’re gonna need a lot of sage to rid that building of all the hate vibes.

    • Friday

Yep, full containment and cleansing procedures recommended on all levels. Probably time to break out the asafoetida, even. πŸ™‚

    • Steven Leahy

It’s a beautiful building, too. Shame its beauty was obscured by all the ugliness coming from it.

      • Gigi

        Hopefully that will soon change.

  • David

As of 9am Saturday, they’ve only raised 16% of thier $200,000 goal.

    • DaddyRay

It has more than doubled over night since Joe posted the first thermometer at $17K twelve hours ago. $35K is amazing – keep spreading the word!

      • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

        Now at 25% + (Jan 30, 5:55 pm EST)

    • Steven Leahy

      It’s >$40K and 20% now at 10:20 Central

  • Jake

    Did my bit.

Put this together withe the (unofficial) news that since last November when the Mormon elders handed down their extra-special revelation that the gays are extra-special icky and young Mormons need to renounce their gay parents and leave their homes when they turn 18, 32 young people have killed themselves… well, I think we can work out why this refuge is needed. Thank you, Joe.

  • glass

One of the best things about the LGBT community is our ability to take the extreme hate from others and channel that into something useful for humanity.
This would be an amazing place for the Ali Forney Center, and it would send a message that humanity is more important than all the negativity conjured up from peoples insecurities and fears.

    Donation made.

  • Henry Horton

Tried several ways to donate. No can. Anybody got the info i need?

  • 2guysnamedjoe

I wonder if there might be any city/state/federal funding available for this, as there was when Bailey-Holt House (a residence for homeless people with AIDS) took over River House, a failed luxury gay hotel at the foot of Christopher Street. http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/real-estate/bailey-holt-house-best-piece-real-estate-west-village-article-1.1044330

One hundred banana skins sent. Let’s get that building put to a GREAT use and help those kids.

Just donated $100 here! Hope they reach their goal!

Donated $100 and included details for groups I sponsor the message will be going out to about 600 people who will hopefully donate and advise others.

I’m writing to Tracey Baim of Chicago’s Windy City Times to publicize this as well.

    Thank you Joe!

  • Steven Leahy

Reminiscent of the rainbow house going up across the street from WBC. I REALLY hope this building goes to serve LGBT causes.

Time to call Cindy Lauper Lady Gaga ,Madonna, Arianna Grande, Maria Carey and ask for a donation!

I just donated! that building will need a severe h8 cleansing ritual before the youth can move in!

    • Friday

Yah, the Fundies’d love to scaremonger about the sight of it, but a happy pubic one would probably do wonders. πŸ™‚

Also, actually, step one is taking that damn sign and its foundation down: it’s in violation of city code and in everyone’s way. May as well start by being good neighbors.

  • zhera

I sent this to a guy who puts out a weekly charity list online, where people can ask for help for all sorts of things. He’s got a big audience and hopefully this will help AFC. The list will be out on Monday.

  • HAAAAAAA

This would be a true transformation from the House of Hate, to the House of Love and Hope.
Pleas please donate to this most worthy of all causes the cause of hope and love.

    • Homo Erectus

I really, really want a picture of that building with the sign gone and a youge rainbow flag hanging from it.

  • David Walker

Last night, I lamented that I wasn’t able to make a contribution just now. A couple of you suggested that I could do other things to raise awareness. I posted twice on Facebook. Mass email was suggested, which I will do. But this morning I went to The Advocate’s site. They had an article on Manning and the building but not a word on AFC’s campaign…which ticked me off. Rather than attack The Advocate for the omission, I wrote the following in the comments. It’s long, I’m sorry, but I also thank those of you who encouraged me “to do something.” It may be deleted by now, but if any of you want to use this in an email or blog or as a way to pass the hat tonight or tomorrow, you most certainly have my permission.

The Ali Forney Center, which has several homeless LGBTQ centers throughout the city, wants to buy this house of hate and turn it into a home for our homeless kids and a place to train them some trades, other than the one some have been forced into. Our youth have been forced onto the streets by “parents” who would rather believe some hateful, lying sonuvabitch “preacher” like this than simply give their child the love s/he deserves. The Ali Forney Center is trying to raise $200,000 to buy this building (even though I’m not Christian, I cannot call this splendid building so full of potential good a “church”) at auction. It’s possible, of course, that someone else could buy it, but it’s a registered landmark so it can’t be torn down…and if AFC is outbid, the money raised now will go to purchase another site.

Many of us don’t have kids of our own and don’t want to. I don’t. Neither do I want to see our kids — and they ARE our kids — selling their bodies, sleeping in doorways, thinking we don’t care and help doesn’t exist. In fact, Ali Forney Center kind of care doesn’t exist in smaller cities. But if you were a teen and kicked out of your home, woldn’t you consider New York or another large city a destination? The plan for this former house of hate is to house our kids and give them training to run an in-house building. If you can, please help. If you’re going out tonight, maybe you could pass the hat. Somebody at the bar or club probably took a laptop and you can show it so people would know where the money in the hat would go. Or maybe donate now. ATLAH and Manning not only deserve to go down, the deserve to know that their house of hate has been replaced by a home of help and hope and love.

25% – – in less than 24 hours our community has done a great job – now, we just need to push through – – anyone heard from Starbucks about the requests?

    • rabbit_ears

We probably won’t hear from them until at least Monday sometime. Corporate work hours play a big part there.

    • David Milley

I got a no-go reply to the form I submitted yesterday. It’s pretty clear that the person answering the mail failed to understand the request, and may be unaware of this particular building’s significance to Starbucks. They wrote:

      “Thank you for contacting Starbucks.

“I am glad to hear that you are involved with the hopes to re purpose a building for LGBT youth in need.

“For more information, please visit us at http://www.starbucks.com/customer-service/faqs/responsibility.

“I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, we really do appreciate you letting us know about this auction. I hope that you can keep helping out with these topics and that your auction can go successfully, David.

“If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please visit us at customerservice.starbucks.com.

The disappointing part for me is the $25 Canadian dollar amount I could put in turns into $17.89 USD. Stupid bloody exchange rates.

    • DaddyRay

      Every bit helps

    • Don’t forget, you gave $25 Canadian dollars! But it feels better, donate again and smile as the coffers fill. One way to donate is to share on social media or by email. I’ve shared it twice already.
I think they’ll get more than asked. They’ll NEED more too.
This fundraiser is the best thing ever. I’m thinking of donating $17.89 myself! It’s a nice amount. i’m also thinking of writing to the local shelter donor/user mailing list and recommending
      (1) THIS project and
      (2) that they up their current contributions to NIGHT ON THE STREET, and
      (3) look at my deal: STORMFAIRY.ORG (buy a warm hat AND wool blend socks for a homeless person for $2).
I’m not well, but I’m doing good!
Thanks for inspiring me to think this through.
Friend me on facebook, rabbit ears!

    • $17.89 is beautiful!

    • DumbHairyApe

BUT, keep in mind that YOUR money is sooooooo very much more beautiful than our ugly USA money!!!!

Almost $52K in less than 24 hours!

    • 25% of needs! If you can’t donate, you can share this on Facebook or email people you know who blog…

    • ColdCountry

      Now over $52K!

  • Robyn Ryan

    Do this thing.

  • Homo Erectus

When only 100 LGBT people each give $100.00, that’s $10,000.00. If 20 times that many do it – problem solved.

  • Bob M

If this does come to pass, can you imagine all of the screams of “religious persecution” because a “good Christian church” lost their property because they did not pay their due to the government (Mark 12.12-22)

  • YakHerder

    Donated!

  • TampaDink

I’m not a user of social media, except commenting on Joe’s web thingy here…but I sent a link with a request to spread the word to another excellent professional gay dude. I really hope that Dan Savage will post this on his blog & mention it on his weekly podcast. I think his followers would be as good hearted and generous as everyone here.

And spread the word – please post to other groups you visit and post to. Send in tips to other blogs, etc…the more we get the word out, the sooner and the more money they will be able to raise.

  • Igby

Come on kids. They only have 33% of their goal. Hubby and I donated yesterday, you can donate today. Check your seat cushions, under the bed, give up Starbucks for a few days, brown bag your lunch for a week. Anything.

    We must make this happen.

  • Igby

Please, please, please give a little. My grandfather always used to say “watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves”. Please give what you can, no matter how small it may seem.
