Trump Reminds Voters: Ted Cruz Is Cuban [VIDEO]

Waving a bible at an Iowa rally, last night Donald Trump thought he’d remind voters that Ted Cruz is Cuban. Trump: “In all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, OK? Just remember that, OK? Just remember. When you’re casting your ballot, remember.” Watch below.

  • Todd20036

    So is Rubio.

Funny, but Latinos aren’t impressed with either Cruz or Rubio because Cubans instantly become US citizens if they reach US soil, and Latinos do not.

Still, given Trump’s base, I’d say this is far from the most racist thing he’s implied.

    • Baltimatt

      Really?

These descendants are benefiting from the most generous rules in U.S. immigration law. The Cuban Adjustment Act allows Cubans to become permanent residents in a year, far more quickly than most other immigrants.

      http://interactive.sun-sentinel.com/cuban-adjustment-act/loophole/

That doesn’t sound like instant citizenship to me.

      • Herald

By comparison that would feel like instantly.

      • Todd20036

They aren’t kicked out and sent back to Cuba. They are given a fast track to residency/citizenship.
Compare that to Mexicans or other Latinos who get deported if caught

      • fuow

It may take a bit of time, but living in the Southwest, I can tell you, the Mexican-American community considers it to be instant and preferential treatment.
Being Cuban-American is NOT a positive factor out here in the purple states with a high Mexican-American population. At.All.

        • TuuxKabin

Cubans are called ‘gusanos’ (worms) for a reason.

        • Gustav2

And the Puerto Rican American citizens in Florida don’t have a great love for them either.

      • DN

Way closer to instant than the 12 years it took me… And it’s not like I dragged my feet. I even applied for citizenship before the requisite five years (it takes about three months to process so they let you apply 4 years and 9 months into your green card).

        • skeptical_inquirer

Our legal immigration system is really quite shameful. I am all for reforming it so that people who would be awesome additions to our society (and people who have done things like translate for us overseas in warzones) become citizens faster.

          • Chucktech

“(and people who have done things like translate for us overseas in warzones)”

            This, in spades.

          • skeptical_inquirer

I occasionally hear interviews of US soldiers who really want to help the people who helped them but get frustrated by how slow and tangled the process is. It often takes a House of Rep or a Senator to even quicken up the pace.

          • Chucktech

It’s truly disgraceful. Those translators, without whom we truly be fucked over there, should be absolutely shooed into this country if they want to come. Hell, they even speak English! Some probably better than you or I.

          • Remember when Shrub threw out most of the military translators in Iraq because they were gay? That turned out swell too.

          • Chucktech

THAT was actually damaging to national security, since we desperately needed translators, but they were American and working in the States. These others were Iraqi’s who risked their lives to help us. Obviously, if they had been found out, they’d have been killed.

    • Cherry

Rafael Cruz was born in Canada, not Cuba.

      • lymis

        To an American citizen.

      • Eric in Oakland

Canada… Cuba… What’s the difference? They’re both socialist countries that begin with “c”.

    • Acronym Jim

I have it on good authority that Marco Rubio is an anchor baby.

  • Texndoc

How many evangelicals are billionaires and on their third wives. So I wonder if Cruz is going to continue to have his lips firmly planted on the Donald’s backside. Wimpy Ted, c’mon – take the OompahLoompah out big guy.

    • Good Shot Green

      Any comments from Ivana lately?

    • clay

Do we get to count their tele-preachers or not?

  • Skokieguy

Not too many evangelicals purchase wives from overseas and publicly talk about banging their own daughter.

    • sw42

I love you a little bit for that. Cheers.

    • olandp

      More than you might know….

    • Trump is not religious…he is carrying around the Bible as a prop much like his wife…just an extension of his ego and wealth to make him relevant and approachable to others…

      • Michael Rush

I’d love to post that comment on a right wing site and see how they respond to it .

      • Wynter Marie Starr

I beg to differ. Trump is in fact religious. He worships money. And himself.

      • PLAINTOM

He is as religious as all the grifters making money from selling hate.

    • Lakeview Bob

I agree Skokie. BTW, you are adorable.

      • Skokieguy

Old pic, You’re too kind, but thank you!

For Trump to try and compete as the who’s most religious hardcore is a rather losing proposition. There are so many other things he could attack Cruz for, I’m surprised he picked this.

And wouldn’t it be refreshing if politicians proposed objections to competitors policies and positions instead of debating how much of a loser someone is or then energy level or their relative attractiveness of their face.

        • bambinoitaliano

To be honest, I don’t mind this infighting at all. The religious wing nuts have gone into the deep end. It will need a non religious loud mouth to poke at them. That organization need to be destabilize. To me Trump is like a bull in the RWNJ china shop. I’m savouring the damaged he has done to them.

        • JulieBL

And *I* thought he was poking at him because he’s Cuban (a furriner). Hm. Guess my RaWNJ-dar needs a tune-up.

    • JulieBL

Um. I live in a place surrounded by evangelicals. You might be wrong! 😉

    • radiofreerome

Not too many evangelicals bang their daughters? Have you ever heard of Southern Baptists?

    • Acronym Jim

No, evangelicals bang their sisters. Just look at Josh Duggar.

    • Actually, when it put it that way it does sound awfully Biblical.

  • shellback

    “I won’t forget. You bet I won’t forget.”

    • Good Shot Green

That’s his real hair, innit? I hope so – the idea of that being specially made for him would make me question his sageness and decision-making skills.

      • clay

Yeah, it’s and comb-over (and over and over). One of the world’s more engineered hair styles, practically a hat, or a mat.

        • Ben in Oakland

          WE SHALL OVERCOMB!!!!!

        • Dan McPeek
          • Grumpy old Man

That song brings back memories that are at odds – I loved the music but I was in Plentywood MT and a jr. in HS. I was a passout drunk for my last 2 years of high school. I got better when I got out of town.

        • DonnaLee

He’s probably the only man on earth who teases his hair. It used to be something women did all the time, but I’d swear that’s part of what’s going on there.

          • clay

apparently he teased it so much that it hates him.

      • Chris Baker

Yes, I don’t know why everyone says it’s a toupee. The reality that it is his own hair is much worse than having a bad toupee. Even a bad toupee would look better than that hairstyle. Toupees usually have thick hair, his real hair is swirled all over to barely cover his balding head.

        • Grumpy old Man

There are so many pictures of tRump’s Hair in the Wind that it is hard too choose just one. As bonus, look at the joy on the face of the first Mrs. Trump

  • Mark

Shit. I hate to egg him on…but anything that would take Cruz out of the clown car is ok by me.

    • Lakeview Bob

I’m embarrassed to admit I thought the same thing.

      • Michael Rush

agreed , the worst and most dangerous candidate that i hope doesn’t slip through the cracks somehow .

      • bambinoitaliano

Don’t be. That’s my first take on the article. Glee is the word.

    • Gustav2

Hell no, any Democrat would win in a landslide against Cruz. It would be Goldwater part deux.

      • fuow

I wouldn’t count on it. The number of ‘anybody but Hillary’ likely voters is very high.

        • Octavio

Agreed. I’m still smarting from that actor, Ronald Reagan, who faked his way to the Presidency. I don’t think the country has become any smarter since then. 🙁

        • Todd20036

Yeah, but the “anyone but Hillary” crowd is mostly goobs, and their numbers have decreased even from 2012.
People who might consider themselves GOPers aren’t going to vote for the crazies in 2016

          • fuow

Oh, I do hope you’re right. The 2014 elections suggested you’re not, sadly….

      • lymis

Pre-Citizens United, I’d have agreed. Now that gazillionaires can spend unlimited money on campaigns, it’s not a slam dunk anymore.

Don’t kid yourself that whoever gets the nomination, the machine will be behind them against any Democrat, even if they’re holding their noses and cutting behind the scenes deals to do so.

      • Helen Damnation ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Trump, Cruz or Goldwater? Hell, I’d vote for Goldwater in a minute!

        • TampaDink

Me too. Goldwater would have zero chance of destroying our democracy, being dead makes him less threatening.

        • Grumpy old Man

Goldwater was kicked out of the Arizona (?) Republican party as too ‘lefty’ – they even renamed the state Republican office building to take his name off it,

    • bitwise

We want Cruz, Trump and the establishment pick (probably Rubio) all still relevant going into the convention with no clear choice. Probably won’t happen, though.

    • skeptical_inquirer

I’m actually freaked out more by Cruz than Trump.

    • lymis

It’s far too soon, but I still think the ideal outcome would be for Trump to split off as his own party, and split the republican vote with Cruz.

  • TexasBoy

I hope voters also remember that Trump is an extremely rich narcissist that couldn’t care less about anyone else, just so his ego is constantly fed.

    • Chuck in NYC

And, as has been noted here before, our version of Putin.

    • lymis

So, other than the rich part, he’s just like one of them.

  • popebuck1

And if any of them seriously believe Donald Trump is an evangelical, they’ll believe anything.

    • lymis

Hey, remember they temporarily rezoned Romney into a “Christian” when up until then, Evangelicals were adamant that Mormons are not Christian.

      • Chucktech

Of course, every other candidate had to implode before the christians trans substantiated Romney into a christian…

    • elvigy

Perfect summary of the whole thing.

  • Nicholas Rostov

Is it just me or is he starting to look really hot?

    • William

Let me call an ambulance, your condition is serious.

    • Cackalaquiano

I might have to flag your comment for the moderators to deal with…

    • Todd20036

      IT’S. JUST. YOU….

    • Blake Jordan

In reference to his temperature, right???

    • disQusTed

      It’s just you.

    • Good Shot Green

Hot as in overheated, like he’s about to boil over, maybe.

      • RoFaWh

There are oo-toob vids of lancing boils, but the “disgusting procedure on oo-toob” that most reminds me of tRump is the draining of a sebaceous cyst.

  • Prion

    ,,,,

  • Prion

    ,,,.

    • RoFaWh

I wonder what would happen if every public speaking event by tRump was repeatedly punctuated by cries of “Tell us about your business practices!”

Of course, security would hustle anyone so disrespectful of His Marvelousness right out the door, but if it happened every two or three minutes, I suspect tRump would become angry, throw his speech on the floor, and stalk out

  • Gustav2

Asked in my best IBC Southern accent:

“Mr Trump, which MOG has autographed your Bible?”

  • William

If Obama is Kenyan, Cruz is Cuban and Trump is a pimp.

  • Cackalaquiano

Cuban heritage is literally the only cool thing about Cruz.

  • Kevin Perez

This line of attack would work better with the teabags if he called Cruz a Canadian.

  • CPT_Doom

Do I hear a little bit of anti-Catholic bigotry dog-whistled by the Donald there? Because we know what kind of people do come from Cuba, and they’re dirty papists, right Donnie?

Although, admittedly, it’s not like him to dog whistle.

    • clay

He brings up an issue, but then claims he doesn’t want to talk about it.

  • PLAINTOM

I am sorry, hee hee !

  • Jeffg166

I would like the media to declare a week without Trump. No coverage no matter what he does and says.

    • clay

or how often he calls in. (Producers who put those calls through, I’m looking at you.)

      • Helen Damnation ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Are you kidding, ignore the opportunity for a 100% ratings bump?

        • clay

Are you kidding, ignoring the equal time LAW?

          • Reality.Bites

Equal time rule does not apply within a documentary, bona fide news interview, scheduled newscast or an on-the-spot news event,

          • clay

His calling in doesn’t count as any of those– it’s not a documentary, they’re not interviewing him, it’s not a newscast (but a political talk show) and he doesn’t really count as a news event.

    • pickypecker
      • coram nobis

        Donald Duct.

        • You need to use Gorilla Tape®, Duct tape removal only takes a COUPLE of layers of skin off.

    • Gerry Fisher

That would be refreshing. And sane.

  • HZ81

Well, at least the right is being racist to each other for once. Now, if they could just leave the rest of us out of it.

    • clay

at least the right is being anti-Catholic more openly. That should lock in that KKK vote.

      • HZ81

It is an important GOP voting block. Right after the CHUDS and Cobra Kai.

        • TuuxKabin

          With the Chupacabres closing in.

          • HZ81

Ha! But has Trump pledged to build a wall to keep them out?

          • TuuxKabin

They don’t need no fuckin’ walls to be kept out, they can fly.

      • RoFaWh

I wonder where that leaves the red-caped loons?

  • barrixines

This is a man with his finger swirling the water in a toilet bowl filled with his own turds and inviting you, America, to applaud him.

  • Toasterlad

In all fairness to Trump, Cruz IS Cuban.

    • lymis

By ethnicity, not by nationality. He was born in Canada to one Cuban and one American parent. He’s as legitimately American born as any other citizen.

      • JustSayin’

That is questionable. His father took Canadian citizenship before his right to stay in the U.S permanently was granted. In fact he stopped the process.

As for his mother it is under investigation if she had renounced her american citizenship to become Canadian and there is also a quirk in the immigration laws about the child of an american and a foreigner who live outside the u.s. when the kid is born. It is convoluted and changes happen every couple years but for example right now if the mother is the u.s. citizen and has lived outside the u.s. for five years and has not been back to the u.s. in the year prior to the kids birth, the kid is not automatically a u.s. citizen.

Despite what Cruz and teabagistan says the concept of birthright citizenship only applies if the kid is born on u.s. soil to a non-us mother. For example if dad goes overseas and breeds 10 kids with non-u.s. women they don’t automatically get citizenship, they have to go through a process to be naturalized. Its easier than regular immigration but it is still!! Naturalization not birthright

  • Heard part of this on NPR yesterday — the part where he was waving around his Bible to pander to the masses. They were eating it up like a dog its own vomit.

    • clay

It says right here (no, I don’t remember which passage) but it says right here that only real Americans, who are indepenitential Protesters should be elected to the presidency of these United States.

    • skeptical_inquirer

The masses don’t read the Bible and prefer someone who doesn’t either.

    • Chris Baker

Yup, me too. I think he said “I brought my Bible”. Im sure one of his assistants picked it up at an airport bookstore on the way there.

  • Baby Dave

    Canadian, not Cuban.

    • JulieBL

Facts, facts, facts. What facts matter to RWNJs?

    • skeptical_inquirer

Trump can have two lines of attack. Also, I think the Tea parties need to be roasted on a spit regarding their hypocrisy on how they apparently think birth certificates only matter if you’re dark. I’m not talking trying to bump Cruz out of the race, just showing the base as they truly, truly are.

      • DN

        Such hypocrisy.

Remember when Cruz made a big show about how he’d go through the ordeal of renouncing his Canadian citizenship? The Canadian government put out some sort of statement saying, basically, “we’re confused as to why Mr. Cruz thinks this is an arduous task, because renouncing Canadian citizenship consists of writing a letter.”

Tried to find a link but I suck at google this morning 🙂

    • coram nobis

Canadian and Cuban. “Lucy, you got a lot of ‘splainin’ to do.”

  • Trump is a low class scu_bag. He disgusts me.

  • ColdCountry

So we’re supposed to believe that Trump IS an evangelical??

    • lymis

He thinks he’s God and is spreading the word, and prepared to smite anyone who disagrees. Oh, and he’s written a book (ghost-written by other people, of course.) He considers women and gay people to be less than equal. He isn’t particularly interested in objective truth, science, or logic.

So other than the being Christian part – which, frankly, doesn’t seem to be a requirement for actual Christians, either – I’d say he pretty much qualifies.

    • coram nobis

I believe he worships Mammon, a deity Who has done him a lot of good. Someone who’s still rich after four bankruptcies and three divorces must have some kind of divine favor.

      • Gianni

Trump worships the dollar. I don’t know about his Bible reading or his relationship to God, but the dollar sign flashes bright in his eyes.

    • Macbill

Like Kim Davis, Trump found god after the third marriage. Isn’t that CONVENIENT?

      • ColdCountry

It’s amazing, a miracle, in fact!

    • Gerry Fisher

      Surprise!!!

      • ColdCountry

        No shit, surprise – lol!

  • bambinoitaliano

Oh snap! He went there. A non religious person slamming a RWNJ. It’s delicious!

  • FLL

This is the second time Trump has slammed Cruz for being half Cuban. The first was on December 11, when he said “Ted Cruz, but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba, in all fairness. It’s true. Not a lot come out.” (Link here.) Now he repeats the anti-Cuban slur and really rubs it in by adding “Just remember that, OK? Just remember.”

Trump is kind of spelling it out, isn’t he? He doesn’t want or need the votes of Hispanics, even white Hispanics. His white non-Hispanic supporters agree with him, no doubt. Trump has run with this twice now.

Note to blog owner: JoeMyGod, would you please give this some coverage during the coming campaign. I think it’s… um, how would you say… newsworthy. Ahem.

  • coram nobis

I’m assuming that is a bible, but, was he holding it upside down? Or maybe backwards? The video clip doesn’t show it for very long and the still photo shows a title on the lower part.

  • Alan43

To be fair, a lot of cigars come out of Cuba

Would Cruz be better as a cigar?

  • charemor

I was wondering when this would happen. Maybe Trump is going to send those guys who were looking for President Obama’s birth certificate to check on Ted’s. I will bet they can not believe what they will be finding.

    • Gianni

We never did hear what that dedicated, personal, detective team found in Hawaii, did we? Of course, that requires that one would fall for the nonsense of Trump’s team of detectives in the first place. The man is a blowhard who spins more bull than the National Blowhard himself – Rush Limbaugh.

  • charliebkk

When, can anyone tell me, did Americans become so fucking stupid that they can cheer something like this? And when did they become so stupid that they would vote for either Cruz or Trump, or any of the other buffoons in the GOP race? It is like 40% of the people have gone utterly insane. I can not comprehend this.

    • Gerry Fisher

We freaked out at 9/11, and none of our leaders helped to instill calm; instead, they used fear to manipulate and control. Then, the crashed economy and the Kenyan, Socialist president sent us into overdrive. When you’re crazy afraid, you can’t think straight.

    • Gianni

I have a friend who is a dedicated Trump supporter/fan. His sole reason is that, “Trump speaks his mind.” I didn’t waste any breath suggesting that it’s obvious he speaks his mind, but that, in no way, indicates the quality of the thinking in that mind.

  • Jim

Why is he waving a book that he’s never read and knows nothing about?

    • Reality.Bites

How better to prove his Christianist credentials?

      • Gianni

Didn’t he also claim to be evangelical? He truly knows how stupid his audience really is. Buying that joke would require one to be a total moron as far as politics goes.

  • Gerry Fisher

Every once in a while, I forget how much I loathe this man and I start to admire the cunning way he can push buttons and manipulate. There’s skill there. It’s an evil skill, but it’s skill.

    • Gianni

He’s been at it a long time.

  • bob

Why does trump keep acting like Benita Butrell from ILC ? He loves cruz, then dishes on him , lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lE5Tlq2pgc

  • As if Trump’s supporters need to be reminded to behave like xenophobic bigots…

And once again, Trumpy waves around a book he’s probably never read, and in which he claims his favorite proverb is the one about him being envied by people. Which of course doesn’t exist in there, but he doesn’t care. His narcissism knows no limits.

  • EqualityForAll

I like Trump. I really do. The damage he’s doing to the GOP will take years to mend, and I’m ever so grateful for that.
