Donald Trump Cancels Press Conference With Black Pastors Who Aren’t Endorsing Him After All

For days the Trump campaign has been bragging that he will be endorsed today by a coalition of over 100 black pastors. Turns out that isn’t happening. CBS News reports:

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump hastily canceled a press conference that was to be held on Monday at Trump Tower — originally billed as an endorsement event with more than a hundred African-American pastors from all over the country. The event was supposed to show Trump’s extensive reach in the evangelical community but instead resulted in spotlighting the deep division that exists among the religious faithful over Trump’s candidacy. A number of pastors said that Monday’s meeting was never intended to be an endorsement of Trump and were upset that it was being portrayed as such. Pastor Darrell Scott, a pastor from the New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland, organized the meeting and took responsibility for what he deemed a “miscommunication.”

  • Brad Lathem

They were actually invited to be the first to register in the database of non-white people.

  • JT

Pastor Darrell Scott moves to the top of Trump’s deportation list.

  • clay

If tRump was only going to show if he got 100, rather than 40, Black pastors to endorse him, why didn’t he just hire more?

    • Stubenville

Unlike unemployed actors (at the Trump candidacy announcement) the pastors actually have standards and won’t settle for $1.95 and a ham sandwich.

    • Rambie

Trump’s poll numbers are falling, the other GOP’ers and media smell blood and are pouncing.

  • Public political endorsements by clergy in their religious capacity were always illegal until the IRS stopped enforcing that rule. Does anyone know whether their tax exemptions could be in jeopardy?

    • David Walker

With all the lies flying around these days, maybe they found out about that but used this as their reason for canceling.

    • clay

Bush 43 ordered funding for that office zeroed out. With the sequestration, it hasn’t been re-opened.

    • Bj Lincoln

The IRS rules for non-profit is so vague that the churches are getting away with what ever they want. Once a year for the last several years, a group of churches openly defy the IRS and nothing ever happens. I do wish they would define and enforce the the rules.

It’s gotten to the point where I can’t even look at him…and I could never listen to him. I’m teaching my cat how to knit instead. It’s very calming.

Which part of Trumps rhetoric initially appealed to these 40/100 black pastors?
His sexism, his racism, his xenophobia,…

    • clay

      his wealth.

      The CBS quotes are great.

  • This one confused me. I can see one strange black pastor endorsing Trump. But 100 legit ones? LOL. I can just hear him saying “I love the blacks and they love me, I have thousands — let me repeat — Thousands on my payrolls and I will be TREMENDOUS for the blacks! TREMENDOUS!” in that obnoxious Queens accent of his. What a start to the day!

    • lattebud

“And you know…. They aren’t really from this country. Yeah, I know. Look it up!! I was shocked too. As part of my campaign to make American great again, they are all going back to Africa. You are going back. And you. And you.” Thunderous applause from the crowd, enhanced by a soundtrack to make it sound like the Super Bowl.

      • RoFaWh

I’d like to see a solemn Indian chief respond to that: “You don’t say!”

    • here’s what happened: pastor sell-out is on a private list of 000s if not 0000s of xtian preacher types. probably more than one. all professions do this now, in some way, and the gawd talkers are no different.

the “miscommunication” probably went something like “hey, yall! anybody want to be part of a private roundtable with candidate trump, he’s really interested in your opinions! we’ve got financial help for those of you who need it to get there.”

even liberal black preacher types might think about that. a chance to yell at trump? might be worth the hassle. what they weren’t told was that by attending, their “support” for trump would be directly implied by the campaign. obviously some of them weren’t so cool with that. ironically, trump himself is the one who blew this. if he’d been able to keep his mouth shut a bit, he might have fooled more than a few of them to showing up.

      • Acronym Jim

“if he’d been able to keep his mouth shut a bit…”

Good one, Chicago Dyke. I nearly fell off my chair whilst snorting wine out of my nose after reading that.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Perhaps the pastors were fearful Trump’s more loyal supporters would beat them up.

I can’t wait til Trump falls flat on his face! The whole GOP has nothing but asshats running for POTUS. They will NEVER win!

Yeah, they had sixteen candidates for a while and not one of them has the high ground to criticize Carson or Trump or Cruz for lying or pandering or for being stupid, crazy, un-American, fascist, ignorant, and unserious.

They’re all just variations on the same formula. They’re all fighting to win over the same ignorant, lowest common denominator base. Sensationalism and showmanship are playing better than fake seriousness.

  • Dramphooey

Why did he need one hundred, anyhow? Sharing stories on the Facebook about a single person of color waving a Confederate flag or one solitary Black granny putting Obama in his place is all that TEA Creatures needed before. And if you happen to be the sole African-American who shows up a TEA Party rally I hope you have like people posing with you as if you were Santa Clause at the mall.

  • DaveMiller135

That actually seems like a sound campaign decision. It might have been better to disguise it a bit more. Of course, a real politician would have known how to carry it off, but “Let’s not ask for the moon, Jerry…”

  • Reality.Bites

    All a misunderstanding.

Trump thought he was being endorsed by a group of 100 black patsies.

Here’s the lead photo from “Dr.” Darrell Scott’s website:

  • i know exactly what went down here. you’ve got to check out that church’s website; it just screams grifting con artist sell outs.

i hate the churches of cleveland. there, i said it. oh, we have sooooooo many. so many in the poorest, least developed neighborhoods that just can’t afford yet another singin n shoutin preacher man with a plate in his hand. some of these churches actually do 5 minutes of charity a week, but for the most part? only open on the day when you have to pay to see the Show. the rest of the time they just sit there and don’t pay taxes.

    • Alphabet Hotel

Really surprising the guy at “The Word” church in Cleveland didn’t beat this grifter to selling out. (He spent $20,000 to rent the Rock & Roll Hall of fame for his daughter’s sweet 16.)

  • HZ81

This should read “Donald cancels press conference with the blacks.”

    Just sayin’.

  • Stubenville

It would have been HUUGGEEE, but those pastors are all losers. We’re gonna send them back to Africa.

  • Diogenes Arktos

The pastors didn’t realize that their mere appearance could be interpreted as an endorsement for Trump‽ That’s incredibly naïve of them. (No comments, please, about their being Christians.)

  • Homo Erectus

Rev. James Manning will endorse him for a bit of publicity.

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Here’s the Guardian’s take on the event:
