Michelangelo Signorile Calls Out Media For Ignoring GOP Candidates’ Embrace Of “Death To Gays” Pastor

As I noted again in the post below this one, so far only Rachel Maddow has reported on last weekend’s “death to gays” convention, where three GOP presidential candidates were interviewed by Pastor Kevin Swanson in between his calls for the genocide of LGBT Americans. Today Michelangelo Signorile calls out the rest of the mainstream media. He writes:

Where is The New York Times? The Washington Post covered the conference and the candidates’ comments, but didn’t mention the “kill the gays” speech. Not news to them apparently. Several online sources that did focus on the conference placed more attention on Cruz telling Swanson that an atheist shouldn’t be president, or on the unhinged Swanson’s advice to parents that they should drown their children rather than let them read Harry Potter, than on Swanson calling for the extermination of an entire group of people at an event at which presidential candidates spoke.

It’s 2015 and much of the media seem to accept, still, that LGBT people can be talked about this way at an event attended by presidential candidates and that it’s not news. They view it as par for the course, religious conservatives doing what they do. It’s as if they have blinders on. Indeed, if Ted Cruz — or Huckabee or Jindal — attended an event at which the host hinted at mass murder of Jews, African-Americans or any other group it would be a massive media story. He’d be forced to answer questions about it, at debates (and it didn’t come up at the last debate), in press conferences and in interviews non-stop. He’d be pressured to condemn both the comments and the pastor — as when John McCain had to dump Pastor John Hagee in 2008 because of his ugly comments about Catholics — or he’d face the consequences.

Signorile goes on to note that the mainstream media is “running for cover” lately after the ridiculous “gotcha” questions whining made by GOP candidates after a recent debate. Hit the link and read his full piece.

    We need journalists, not stenographers.

    • leastyebejudged

Having had some interaction in the past with journalists, we’d probably be better off with stenographers.

They are not above telling you what you want to hear. We really do not need that.

  • Skokieguy

I have written a lengthy email to my circle and have been told that supposedly this is being widely posted and spread around on Facebook, but this doesn’t excuse actual ‘journalists’ from doing their fucking jobs.

  • TheManicMechanic

Too bad this is falling on deaf ears at most corporate media.

  • The Sentinel

You can add HuffPo to the list of media outlets that ignored this story. Have you seen their “Gay Voices” page of which Signorile is Editor-at-Large? Its appallingly lightweight with several gay-baiting articles and nonsense about celebrities.

    • Skokieguy

In all fairness, it is not the lead, but is right at the top of the page of the HuffPo’s gay voices section. The link that Joe posted is to Signorile’s editorial posted at HuffPo.

      • The Sentinel

Yes, nearly ONE FULL WEEK AFTER the event.

  • oikos

If these ‘candidates’ attended a convention where death for Jews or Blacks or any other minority was called for, the media would be all over them. We are still second class citizens. I hope the Dem candidates will be asked about this/address this.

    • Guyzer

Hey-stupid … the candidates aren’t the bigoted lefty journalists

          • You do know these trolls are all closet cases, right? Oikos, just give him the link to gay Christian mingle so he can find someone to play the mean ol’ lefty journalist with the big martyrdom nail stabbing him in his very naughty gay boy place.

        • bambinoitaliano

Someone let the troll in from the rain, I don’t think that I could take it, cause it took so long to rid it and I’ll never have that recipe again……..

        • leastyebejudged

Unfortunately there IS some truth to what he said. You’d think there would be journalists covering the issue, but they’d rather talk about how Trump is talking about Hillary’s fucking hair than what’s really going on in this country.

          • oikos

Yeah, well I’m not interested in entertaining troll view points so I don’t care what he said.

          • leastyebejudged

That would be because you obviously aren’t a thinker.

What he said isn’t the point, an IDEA related to it is.

Big reading comprehension fail there. And a massive failure to address a very real issue.

          • oikos

Yes I’m not a thinker. Go fuck yourself. Maybe your could go fellate our troll visitor some more.

          • leastyebejudged

        Hey-stupid … go fuck yourself

    • Steven Leahy

Agree, and I will also say the media’s response to the horrific things said about Hispanic people has been disappointingly tepid at best.

    • Actually, a number of Republicans and right-wing activists (Tony Perkins, for example) have spoken at white supremacist events with little media attention.

  • Skokieguy

Considering the media likes to promote anything that is ugly and controversial, to generate viewers and clicks, you think this would be a natural, as it would inflame the public and spur vicious debate. Certainly this is far more newsworthy than Trump’s latest outrage du jour.

    • CottonBlimp

They like controversy, they don’t like getting death threats from wingnuts. What the news media likes to do is portray every issue in a “he-said, she-said” artificially neutral style so they can sit safely on the sidelines and watch people who actually stand for something battle it out over it. They don’t want to get their readers mad at them, they want to get their readers mad at *each other*.

I think there’s just no way to spin this story in that format – they have to either say that calls for genocide are legitimate political discourse, pissing off any decent human being reading the story, or they have to acknowledge that sheer hatred of gays isn’t a respectable religious belief.

Or maybe they’re just lazy and stupid schmucks. Who knows?

      • pj

ill take lazy shmucks for 500 please

  • bravo. it’s been so distressing to sit for all these years and watch people not give a FUCK when this call to violence is directed against us. “oh, well, it’s his religion! he has a right to his opinion!” you have to be a completely intellectually-stunted moron to believe such things.

    • JT

Finally! Maybe this will get them off their asses to do their jobs.

      • Grumpy old Man

        Hmmm

    • LonelyLiberal

Of course not. Eyeballs are advertising dollars. So if the RW whines that they’re being “gotcha”-ed, and cut off access, that’s fewer dollars in the media’s pockets eventually.

On the off chance that one of these idiots becomes President, it could theoretically lead to being cut out of the White House media circle (it’s been done before).

It works if you assume they’re cowards with, ultimately, no real motivation but money.

      • billbear1961

I don’t know if a democracy can survive, LL, if the press won’t do their jobs!

I’m so SICK of this–it is literally making me ill, worrying me to death.

        It’s so wrong, so EVIL!

        • LonelyLiberal

          Fairness Doctrine, revoking of.

Also, at this point, the media is much more than television and newspapers and magazines. There’s an entire citizen’s brigade of media that isn’t money motivated (primarily).

I think we’ll be fine. Our problem isn’t information, it’s sifting through all of it for what actually matters.

          • billbear1961

I used to carry on–almost alone–about the destruction of the Fairness Doctrine on SF Gate. (It’s discussed far more often HERE!)

I hope you’re right, but I think the mainstream media should be SHAMED into holding them accountable for what they stand for, for what they want to do!

            Facts aren’t bias!

And asking them about their policies and their actions and words is what reporters are supposed to do!

It’s TIME they started doing it again!

If not, they should be ridiculed–held up to CONTEMPT–for their cowardice and their COMPLICITY in this SHAMBLES of a disgraceful, goddamned CIRCUS!!

          • billbear1961

One other thing, dear LL–if the fucks on the right don’t have to answer any goddamned questions about their actions and policies, why the HELL do WE?!

Why don’t Democrats start screaming BIAS when asked questions THEY don’t like?!

What is this FREE RIDE for goddamned FASCISTS?!

It’s time we started asking the press about these double standards!!

Do they give Obama and progressives a free ride? NO!

            Why not?!

        • Steve Teeter

What was it Jefferson said? It was something like: I’d rather have no democracy and a free press than democracy and no free press.

          • billbear1961

As I said, Steve, I really doubt democracy is possible without a free press.

Democrats and progressives–ordinary citizens, activists and politicians–have GOT to start asking the press why the RIGHT doesn’t have to answer hard questions while the rest of us DO!

Such outrageous double standards are just plain BULLSHIT, and it’s gone on LONG ENOUGH!!

Either the right is held accountable, questioned rigorously about their records and the policies they want to foist on the nation, or WE start shrieking BIAS and stop the gotcha questions every time they begin to grill US!!

They don’t give US a free ride, do they?!

            NO, they DON’T!!

WE have to answer, and we DO (because OUR policies–unlike those of the right–aren’t ruthless madness based on goddamned LIES!! WE don’t fear exposure as the right does).

Well, it’s time the RIGHT was held to account, as well!!

If not, the press can go to HELL!

If the RIGHT doesn’t have to answer, neither do WE!!

If we keep that up, either reporters will start to do their jobs again, or they’ll be EXPOSED for the useless, gutless COWARDS they’ve become!!

Imagine Hillary or Bernie–they start to answer a question and then: “Wait a goddamned second! You don’t hold the GOP accountable! You don’t make THEM answer for THEIR records or for the policies THEY advocate! Fuck off!! We won’t be hounded by gotcha questions! WE will answer your questions when you start making the GOP answer REAL, hard-hitting ones, and NOT until THEN!!”

Looks like the Holy Crusade to kill us has begun in earnest. Are the FEMA camps still available in Louisiana and places nearby? Will they let us bring our furniture? Will there be enough pianos for us to sing our broadway show tunes? We’ll need lots of spinach, eggs and cheese for our daily quiche. I supposed I must relent and go buy me a gun. 🙁

  • Guyzer

Hey … why do my comments keep disappearing?
Does the moderator hate gay people?

  • Ninja0980

    This isn’t anything new.
Tony Perkins, Peter Spriggs, Maggie Gallanger and all the FOTF hate group heads have been saying we should be jailed or worse for years and time and time again they are given a pass by the media with the excuse we have to give a voice to the other side.
If they said the same thing about blacks, Jews etc. no way would that excuse would fly.
But with us it’s A-Okay, this simply being the latest example of that.

I know, I’m reading just outright lies, bad grammar and no punctuation. They’re not even worth a comment back.

    • Robert Conner

Everything Republican has turned to shit. Their candidates can’t get the White House, they can’t win wars against shithole ‘countries’ like Afghanistan, and their trolls are pathetic. At least William F. Buckley pretended not to be a troll.

    • KarenAtFOH

So how long have you secretly wanted to be a woman?

  • Robert Conner

It’s no coincidence that fascist rhetoric exerts a gravitational pull on Christian fundamentalists; Christianity and totalitarianism have had a marriage made in heaven that’s lasted for centuries. The focus on ‘moral depravity,’ women as baby factories, racism, nationalism, and extermination of the ‘other’ obviously resonates with evangelicals and the brownshirt thugs of the Christian right are not afraid to broadcast it because few to none in the ‘liberal’ media have the balls to call them out. Muslims cal it “jihad,” Christians call it “crusade,” but it’s all the same.

If there’s a key passage in the gospels that epitomizes Christianity, this is it:

“But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.” (Luke 19:27)

    • Steve Teeter

And that’s from one of the Gospels, not the Old Testament.

    • KarenAtFOH

To be fair, this is not an instruction from Jesus, but the last line of a story he made up about a thug who made himself king, acted like an asshole to people who worked for him, and said shitty things to those who didn’t do things the way he wanted. A rebuke, really, of people who sound an awful lot like Christian conservatives these days.

Did Swanson tell the flock to take their unruly child to the center to be stoned to death? Because, the bible…

  • Hue-Man

I commented exactly the same thing although not as well-written, not as long, and not as polite – I seem to recall using the word “toxic”. It should be toxic for political candidates to attend kill-the-gays events just as it should be toxic for them to attend neo-nazi events (even if their supporters are neo-nazis and KKK members).

Perhaps it didn’t get much coverage because it attracted only 3 candidates, and 2 from the kid’s table debates. Only Cruz has any sort of chance at the nomination, and a small one at that. Perhaps the media figures these 3 will soon fade from the limelight, so there’s little incentive to cover them

  • RLK2

Then everyone should make this story gets out on social media. What is everyone waiting for?

  • Gerry Fisher

I think it’s more contextual. When a judge in Utah does “it” (removes kids for no reason), the mainstream media is all over it. When a “christian” organization does “it,” then they kinda give them a pass, refusing to apply scrutiny.

As usual, Signorine is 100% right

    • billbear1961

When I said, on this site, not too long ago, that one could argue that the death penalty was appropriate for those who advocate genocide–especially if, as a result of that advocacy, people are murdered–my post was REMOVED. (I expect this one will suffer the same fate.)

I said nothing at the time, but I’d like to know WHY.

I was not aware that the expression of such a political opinion violated any rules on this site.

I had said the same thing at least once or twice before without having my post removed; so, I’d like to know WHY it was removed THAT time.

      • Steve Teeter

Were you saying that if, say, Scott Lively advocated death to gays, and someone who claimed to be inspired by him went and shot up a gay bar, killing people, Lively should be held liable? Morally I’d agree with you. But legally, as I understand it, the law just doesn’t work that way. Lively didn’t pull the trigger, after all.

        • billbear1961

          Hello, again, Steve!

There was a government minister who made speeches during the genocide in Rwanda, encouraging people to butcher their Tutsi neighbours, who made it to Canada, claiming refugee status. When his crime was discovered, I believe he was deported to stand trial for it.

We heard last night in a documentary how Serb propagandists demonized Muslims during the wars that followed the collapse of the Yugoslav state. Among other vicious lies, they claimed Muslims were feeding Christian children to animals in the zoo.

We then heard about a Muslim dentist, a good man considered the best dentist in his town, who was strung up on a pole by his Christian neighbours, people who KNEW him, and beaten to death with iron rods. They broke his spine–he took DAYS to die, hanging there in AGONY.

ANYONE who contributed, with words or actions, to making that OBSCENE atrocity possible–which I will now NEVER get out of my mind, Steve, which DESTROYS my faith in this fucking species–shares in the GUILT.

Those who advocate genocide should be held accountable for their advocacy, especially if, as a result of their activities, people are MURDERED.

I refuse to believe no way can be found to hold them accountable!

(And I’d STILL like to know why the comment I posted, expressing the political opinion I gave voice to, was removed from this site.)

          • KarenAtFOH

That was an amazing documentary last night, wasn’t it? As always, I love your passion for liberty and justice. For myself, I cannot support a death penalty at all for anything. I don’t think the state has any business taking the lives of people they have already successfully contained. And I do believe containment is vital to preserving a civilized society from destructive disruption. Those who advocate for genocide are in serious breach of what this country, and others, stand for.

        • billbear1961

Steve, I edited that long post to you to make it as specific as I could.

        • billbear1961

I was just posting to leastyebejudged, and was looking over our exchange again, Steve.

          I think Lively’s an accomplice.

Lady Macbeth didn’t kill King Duncan, but persuaded her husband to commit the crime.

How close must one be to the killer to be considered an accomplice?

        • Robert Conner

It didn’t work out that way for Anwar al-Awlaki. He moved to Yemen, advocated murdering Americans and got taken out, a decision, BTW, that I completely agree with. Standing on the sidelines and cheering on murderers and potential murderers makes one a murderer. It’s time we stop negotiating with terrorists, including Christian terrorists.

      • leastyebejudged

Probably because it was perceived as a two wrongs kind of trolling thing. I can’t really say.

I actually find myself agreeing with you. The open advocacy we see from people that encourage people to murder us, where it results in deaths, should be treated in a just manner, and to me it is difficult to dismiss your suggestion, that those who successfully advocate for that SHOULD, in fact, face the death penalty.

On the other hand, I feel just as, if not more strongly that the authority of the state should be strictly regulated and controlled, and that it is not unreasonable to demand the state give up the authority it has to take human life. It fucks up too often and never holds itself accountable when it does.

There are people who believe the state should have a great deal of authority over our lives that I find entirely unacceptable. They are the same people who are eager to be just as dogmatic as a Fundamentalist Christian – there’s no holding a dialogue with them. They are right and you are not. This is why I often remark that the left is often indistinguishable to me from the right. Because if people were trying to be honest, they’d notice. But for most people, it’s just more important to be on a team than it is to stand alone on any kind of cohesive principles.

The thing is my post said one could argue this, in other words that it was debatable.

It mystifies me that a post was taken down that simply said that one could argue that a particular course of action MIGHT be valid, that such a political opinion could be debated.

As a matter of fact, while in theory I might agree that death was the appropriate punishment for certain heinous crimes, I cannot support the practice of putting criminals to death (mistakes are made–the penalty is enforced far more often against individuals who belong to some groups and not to others–should the state be given [can it be trusted with] such terrible power?–who exactly will carry out the sentence?–would those executed be killed quickly and with as little suffering as possible, or would the punishment almost inevitably be “cruel and unusual”?).

I still think advocating genocide, especially advocating for it loudly and publicly, broadcasting such views, should be a punishable offense, especially if, as a result, people are MURDERED.

And, when it comes to genocide, if there is no doubt someone is guilty by word or by deed of participating in that crime, I might still be persuaded, in spite of the objections I’ve mentioned, to support the death penalty as the appropriate punishment.

As I said, I think it’s debatable–one may argue in favour of it.

I think you have to go pretty far left in this country before you’ll find fanatics as tyrannical as MANY on the American right have become.

And compared to the–what?–25% who make up the fanatical right in the U.S., what TINY percentage could you legitimately label FAR left?

I certainly hope you don’t think social democrats like Bernie Sanders are tyrannical fanatics!

If you do, you must think the Dutch and Scandinavian social democracies are despotic, rather than the most advanced and enlightened societies the world has yet seen!

I think our Constitution is an excellent safeguard against overreaching government, lybj.

The overwhelming problem in THIS country, which places the future of the republic in horrendous peril, is the obscene power of BIG MONEY, which runs RAMPANT in this land!!

(I neglected to thank you for the time you took to respond to me! Your post was anything but slapdash!)

  • You mean the same media that played a short, out-of-context Jeremiah Wright clip over and over for weeks? I’ve learned not to expect much from what is still pretending to be journalism these days.

It’s why I laugh when I her some right-wing bottom feeder invoke the “liberal media myth. The media were successfully bullied years ago into going soft of conservatives, lest they be accused of bias. I think just shows where the real bias lies.

I pretty pissed off to hear a report on Ted Cruz at the Kill the Gays conference on NPR which made no mention of the killing part. They played the clip of Cruz claiming presidents should be on their knees and I waited in vain for the rest of the story.

As much as I deplore hate-mongers, the sad thing is, in the U.S. hate speech is protected. What I find astounding is that Swanson’s claim based on his biblical beliefs isn’t considered incitement to kill. I very much doubt if one of his supporters carried out such a heinous act, Swanson would probably not be charged with complicity.
