HOUSTON: Associated Press Calls It For The Haters, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick Celebrates

The Associated Press has called it for the haters as Houston’s LGBT rights law goes down to defeat by, at this writing, a significant margin. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who paid for his own anti-gay ad campaign, has issued a celebratory press release. Also applauding is virulently anti-gay Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. See both messages below.paxtontweet patrickPR

  • KY Gov and this. We’ll be hearing this for weeks.

    • Ninja0980

Indeed, especially since Conway was supposed to win by 3-4 points but lost by 8.

      • FAEN

They have these off year elections because they know the nut bags will come out in droves and the Dems won’t.

When will we as Dems/Progressives learn that we have to vote in EVERY FUCKING ELECTION from school board to POTUS!

        • Ed Burrow

Remember North Carolina, 2012? They won that too..

          • FAEN

I live in NC and I remember that. As always the rural voters went to the polls en masse while us city folk sat home and complained. We never seem to learn.

          • TrollopeReader

Bri-Bri Brown is still gloating over that one …

          • Ed Burrow

            He’s just getting started..
            Hey, where’s that pic?

          • FAEN

Not as much anymore considering we have marriage nationwide.

          • StraightGrandmother

Wasn’t the Constitutional Amendment vote in North Carolina lost by about the same percentage points as Houston yesterday?

            62% Pro Hate
            37% Pro Equality

          • Ed Burrow

            61-39. I think. But yea

          • jayjonson

Yes, and for the same reason. In North Carolina, our campaign tried to pretend that the vote would hurt unmarried moms and that the problem with the ban on same-sex marriage was that it “went too far.” We cannot win campaigns when we are deceptive and inauthentic and are ashamed of ourselves. Not a single video produced by Houston Unites featured gay or transgender people. Campaigns the keep gay people invisible when our rights are on the line will inevitably lose. This battle could have been won.

    • BlueberriesForMe

Don’t worry.I’m sure there will be more stupidity (if possible) from one or some of the Repub. prez. candidates that will be the new focus.

    • * Closing Notice*

And yet David Ermold and David Moore just married. To me, that recent event is the most significant. Drecky politicians, and repeal campaigns won’t continually emerge out of yesterday’s shadows. Younger generations, and higher awareness supersede all this. Ask the moral arc of the universe where it’s headed. It isn’t drawn towards fear and the absence of light.

      • Vista-Cruiser

Not if those younger generations, with their higher awareness and moral arc of the universe, don’t bother to vote.

  • Baby_Raptor

Serious question for people who still consider themselves Christians: How can you look at this, see that it was done in your god’s name and that he did not stop it, and still insist that your god is loving, just and merciful? How can you ignore your deity’s refusal to stop harm done for him and still insist that he’s good and moral?

I’m not trying to be an ass. I really want to understand. It confounds me.

    • Veylon

I used to be among them. Doing what God wants – or what you think he wants – is inherently good. Love, justice, and mercy are never in conflict with God’s will. If we feel that they might be, it’s because our limited human understanding cannot grasp the majestic totality of God’s understanding; we, too, will share that understanding someday when we stand beside him in Heaven. For now, we must simply have faith and obey his laws with dedication. People who aren’t Christians simply can’t appreciate love, justice, and mercy as they truly are.

It’s a shabby load of middle-class ivory tower sophistry that collapses at the first brush of reality. It’s knowingly and disgustingly servile; bring up someone of genuine good character (and fame) like Oscar Schindler and they’ll fall over themselves to throw away God’s laws so that they can claim him as their own, even if they’ve spent an entire conversation carefully (and tediously) “proving” that they are absolutely inviolable under any circumstances and must be obeyed lest one go to Hell. I left due to the servility.

      • McSwagg

“People who aren’t Christians simply can’t appreciate love, justice, and mercy as they truly are.”

Can you be more narcissistic-ally arrogant? Non-chrustains are no less human or perceptive than you. Get over your privilege.

        • Piet

You may have missed the snark content of that post.

          • McSwagg

In that case, I apologize. I live in Houston and the arrogance of the conservatives is really galling tonight.

          • Piet

I can certainly understand the feeling, especially if you live there because you can’t leave for some reason.

          • McSwagg

Probably stuck here for about three more years. I am actively ‘shopping’ for a new state and city to move to at that time.

          • Bj Lincoln

Come to Baltimore! Maryland has all the protections and voted for marriage years before Obergefell. Very diverse and the people are nice.

So basically “god doesn’t stop it. god is good, ETC therefore refusing to stop it must be good and I’ll get it when god mind-whammies me in heaven,” basically?

      • Duane Dimitrov

You didn’t leave because Christianity is a primitive, inferior worldview based on a 2000 year old book of garbage “philosophy,” dubious moral lessons, and irrelevant historical factoids written by pre-scientific savages inhabiting the shittiest part of the then-Roman Empire?

        Really?

It was the “servility” that got you? Okay then….

    • Blake Jordan

Just like sexuality, mental illness is on a spectrum…

    • JustDucky

There are a variety of ways that Christians attempt to rationalize this. They range from “my faith allows me to believe” to rejecting the notion of an all knowing, all loving, all powerful God. Theodicy* is a branch of theology that attempts to reconcile the juxtaposition of evil in the world with the belief in an all knowing, all loving, all powerful God.

      * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodicy

Note: I didn’t give a personal answer because I am an atheist.

      • The people who pushed the repeal knew they were lying about the threat to women in bathrooms, but the Teavangelicals believe the threat is real. Fearmongering works. They are ignorant and terrified of change they don’t understand or like and they are being exploited by people pushing their own agenda who don’t really care that much about about the social one (see: Koch Brothers).

We are going to have to stop taking common sense and fact-checking for granted if we want to win these ballot initiatives. We keep losing, especially in “off hears” and no one in charge of “our” organizations seems to be getting the message.

        • JustDucky

          I agree completely.

I’m also not sure if this reply wound up where you had intended to put it.

    • FAEN

Organized religion is a mental disease that causes otherwise rational people to act with hate and ignorance.

    • JCF

Christianists are illiterate fucks who never actually READ the New Testament, they’re just told about Jebus from their homophobic imams pastors.

In short: followers of Jesus and Christianists don’t worship the same God. The God I believe in (as a follower of Jesus) created freewill—through evolution, obviously—and isn’t in the business of “stopping” human evil. In the Here&Now, Haterz Gonna Hate.

As a follower of Jesus, I look to an eternal victory. It can be glimpsed in the Here&Now (glimpsed, tasted…schtupped!), but “while the Lord tarry” (while the Haterz hate), it’s still Not Yet. But we Jesus-followers who believe “LOVE WINS!” gather to remember the promise of eternal victory, strengthen ourselves, together, for the journey/struggle, and CELEBRATE the Love-Winning-Victories IN the Here&Now (hey, remember…last June?!).

Oh, and we eat. We eat a lot. There’s also some nice singing (for those, like Yours Truly, tenor, who are into that), and many Encouraging Words.

But it’s mainly the eating. That’s about it. HTH, Baby Raptor, and Peace.

    • Tammy Rainey

one answer would be that one’s conception of God was such that one doesn’t believe that he meddles in human affairs either way – because if he did, then the question becomes “why did you stop THIS bad thing from happening but not THAT bad thing?”

True, that conception flies in the face of the sort of Traditionalist mess that’s being pushed by the modern-day Pharisees, but it IS possible to be Christian and believe this way

      • Baby_Raptor

So then I repeat my question: How can you consider a god who has the power to stop evil and harm but refuses to do so loving and moral?

I don’t see how one could honestly believe that god “doesn’t meddle in human affairs” while believing that the same god loves people, wants to save them, wants to have a relationship with them and will torture them for eternity if they don’t ask his salvation from how he created them.

Trying to understand this is making me even more confused than I was to begin with.

        • Tammy Rainey

I don’t think every one subscribes to the “torture for eternity” doctrine. There are a number of different scenarios one might conceive of why a loving God would still allow bad things to happen. For example, if nothing bad ever happened to anyone anywhere at any tine, how would you even define “goo things” and “bad things”? Indeed, in some cases good is only defined by bad having happened to someone else (say, you get a promotion and therefore someone else didn’t…your team wins a championship, therefore some good team just lost, etc). Likewise, it can easily be argued – and not just in relation to this subject – that suffering through bad experiences and persevering is a vital way to build strength of character.

          That’s just one possibility.

          • Baby_Raptor

Okay, let’s take that at face value.

Where is the morality in deciding that perfect strangers have to suffer easily prevented, life damaging harm because you think that it “builds character”?

‘Cause it’s my life. Given that it’s my life, I should have the right to decide if I want to alter it by undergoing painful things. I would MUCH rather be a “weaker character” person than live my life every single day hearing people lie about me, condemn me because of their non-factual beliefs, and try their damndest to prevent me being treated like a human being. There are ways to build character that don’t require constant emotional abuse.

And, be honest: Would you be perfectly fine with this happening to you and someone defending it as “character building”?

          • Tammy Rainey

parents do it all the time.

And if we’re being honest, the very claim “I’d rather be weaker” could be viewed as evidence that character and strength needed to be built up.

          • Baby_Raptor

You realize what you’re saying here, right? You’re saying that my statement that I’d rather be “weaker” (your words, I was using your phrasing) is justification to rampantly abuse me.

You’re saying that my desire to not be deprived rights and to be treated as a human being means I have no character or strength.

Also, if a parent is making decisions for a child then they aren’t deciding shit for perfect strangers.

Maybe you should actually read and think before you run your mouth in an attempt to defend abuse?

          • Tammy Rainey

I wasn’t discussing the deprivation of rights, but that bad things “happen. I’m not sure what you mean about perfect strangers. IF the Christian God is real and anything similar to the omnipotence ascribed to him, then NO human being is a perfect stranger to him.

Looking back, I do seem to have misread your “weaker” comment but your actual comment is…confusing.

I’ve been citing a POSSIBLE explanation why a THEORETICAL Christian God might be considered loving while at the same time allowing bad things to happen on a seemingly random basis.

How you got from THAT to THIS:

” than live my life every single day hearing people lie about me, condemn me because of their non-factual beliefs, and try their damndest to prevent me being treated like a human being.”

is a complete mystery to me. THAT proposition is not one I’m even discussing, let alone defending. I disagree with that sort of behavior in the strongest possible terms, no matter what theology might be used to defend it. I’m not and have not been at any point in our exchange discussing or defending that.

You asked a question about how people could believe in a good God under a postulated circumstance. I suggested one possibilie answer. It’s not my fault you went off topic.

          • Baby_Raptor

IF the Christian God is real and anything similar to the omnipotence ascribed to him, then NO human being is a perfect stranger to him.

I do not know this god. He has not shown himself to me, nor did he ask my permission to be used in his plans.

He is a perfect stranger who is using me without his consent. You are defending this.

THAT proposition is not one I’m even discussing, let alone defending.

You made a vague statement about bad things needing to happen to build character and said that my statement that I’d rather be weaker than live under the constant bullshit I deal with means I “need to be stronger.” So I laid out exactly what you’re saying I should live through.

It’s not my fault you went off topic.

I never went off topic. I clarified for you what you’re propagating. You don’t like it now that it’s been made clear so you’re attempting to make the the flaw in the conversation.

I’m quitting this conversation now. I have better things to do than listen to you attempt apologetics and then backtrack when you realize you’re being monstrous and try to make it my fault.

          • Tammy Rainey

            “You are defending this.”

No, I’m engaging in a mental exercise provoked by your question.

” clarified for you what you’re propagating.”

I’m not propagating anything, I’m speculating – which I’m going to have to withdraw from doing, I guess, since I did not intend to get into an emotion charged debate. Just by the way, it’s bad form to say “I just asking an honest question” and when one person bothers to say “what if it’s like this?” your conclusion is “YOU MONSTER!”

That indicates it wasn’t an honest question at all, but someone looking for a fight.

  • On behalf of we trans I would like to thank all of the LGB that stood with us, it means a lot. I am sorry that we’ve become the low hanging fruit the right latches upon.

    • Bruno

Please don’t apologize for other people’s evil.

    • FAEN

I’m sorry more people are still stuck in ignorance and hate and couldn’t see this for what it was-protection for ALL!

We may have lost this but we won’t stop fighting until we’ve won.

    • KnownDonorDad

It’s the nature of bullies to pick a smaller, weaker target after they lose a fight. This attack was inevitable.

      • Piercedchrlz

To pick, in their PERCEPTION a smaller, weaker target. We will prevail in the long run,the universe will bend towards equality!

        • Sporkfighter

Doesn’t help those who won’t live to see it. How many more kids will we lose?

          • Piercedchrlz

How many kids did we lose in the long hard fight for marriage equality for gays and lesbians ? Have we stopped losing kids even after the ruling, no. Legislation doesn’t cure families of beating, ostracizing, and throwing their children out because they don’t fit their idea of what a human is. This ruling is a horrific blow, like so many before, but to suggest it would have cured the horrific loss of children because everyone would have followed the legislation is not realistic. This fight is not over, my comment was meant to encourage us to continue, unwilling to accept the transphobic vote of the electorate in Houston.

          • Sporkfighter

            Agreed.

    • friedpikmin

Despite the vicious attacks towards the trans community, leaving y’all out would have not been right morally. It is the religious right that is to blame here. Campaign for Houston put together a disgusting, unethical campaign based on lies and fear mongering. We will fight against their lies. Not our trans brothers and sisters.

    • Sporkfighter

To add to your happiness, all I have to do is stand aside and let you be you. It costs me nothing. Those on the wrong side put so much into fighting against your happiness, and nobody gains by it. Nobody is better fed, housed, clothed, educated or loved because of them.

  • Ninja0980

The only polls that were accurate were the ones showing HERO go down in defeat.
The ones showing Democrats winning in KY were off by a mile.

    • TrollopeReader

I can’t imagine polls working that well in low-turnout elections. Even though KY had a governors race … and as a nation, we have way too many f*ing polls. A new one every day it seems for the presidential race, and the first vote isn’t until New Hampshire! Iowa is a caucus so that brings out only a very few committed folks …..

  • TrollopeReader

#1….”record numbers”? 200,000 (plus) votes in a city of over 2.4 million?
#2….always bad to have a local election when there are no other state / federal races….

    • MDB

Selective memory from Patrick , whose BFF is the asshole Jared Woodfill who is responsible for all of this bullshit.

    • Blake Jordan

Less than 20% of the population votes, and we lose our rights??? That is fucked up!!!

I am just as angry at those eligle to vote who didn’t, as I am at those who voted to repeal HERO!!!

    • friedpikmin

Texas in general has abysmal voter turnout. If we could fix this problem, I don’t think Texas would be nearly as red as it is today. Most people feel like their vote wouldn’t have any impact, so they just don’t vote.

  • Mike__in_Houston

It’s a shame, and not the least bit unexpected. This is the third time the city council has passed similar ordinances since the mid-1980s, and the third time it has been defeated by referendum. The first time was by a very wide margin, and the second time by a much smaller margin; I’m pretty sure it was smaller than this time. The bathroom scare tactic played a major role in pushing through the haters’ victory this time. I hope we can persuade the NFL to move the 2017 Super Bowl to a city that promotes equality, although with all the money that has undoubtedly already been spent.in preparation for having it here, I’m not holding my breath.

    • Yes, but was it naive to hope that the city had moved beyond the bigotry of the late 80s? Maybe it was. I lived in Houston and was in a bubble of acceptance of everyone but that was inside the loop where I rarely ventured beyond downtown, the Museum District and occasionally They Heights.

As for the Super Bowl, I’m not counting on it. The NFL? Hardly a liberal bastion.

  • bryan

I hope this brings a revolution in trans rights.

    • tomfromthenews

It does remind me of Dade County, FLA in 1977. Took away LGBT rights and the modern gay rights movement really took off!

    • What?

I hope so. Some good has to come of this.

  • Blake J Butler

Superbowl will be coming to Houston before you know it, 2017 isnt that far away all the conservative Christians, who proudly voted against this ordinance (which protected more than Just the LGBT community) but about a dozen other groups) These guys will reap what they sew. Just wait and see, they have won the battle, but they haven’t won the war, even if its GODDAMN Texas.

    • BlueberriesForMe

Pedantic me says “it’s ‘sow’, not ‘sew'” in this context.
      You’re welcome :=).

      • Blake J Butler

Typo, I’m working off of my iPhone not my laptop, I put this in right before I went for a nightly walk. But thanks for your correction I’ll edit it when I’m finished with my walk

    • McSwagg

The NCAA Final Four is in Houston in March 2016. Sadly, it’s probably too late to change that.

      • Blake J Butler

You Never know, stranger things have happened this election season, but your probably right, maybe it’s too late for the final four to have an impact, but the super bowl is definitely going to get some traction, there’s no way it can’t after what happened tonight.

  • Michael Rush

What can you say about someone who describes
human rights as a twisted agenda .

  • JustDucky

They’re just selling hate and fear like they always have. But record numbers of voters are religiously unaffiliated and churches lose more members every day. They are driving people away.

    And they will lose.

  • Time to do a One Million Moms version of boycott to Houston supporters of the ban.

  • Duane Dimitrov

And here we all though that, once marriage equality was here, we could all go home and focus on ordering overpriced midcentury modern furniture!

Who would have thought an organized group like conservatives would rally and counterattack?

    • KnownDonorDad

I actually thought they’d renew their attacks on science and history; I underestimated how they’d focus on local ENDAs.

  • Luke Taylor

Houston will never be a city that attracts progressive employers like Apple or Google. Most intelligent, progressive people would not want to come to Houston to work. I know because I live here (for a temp work assignment but leaving soon). The people in Houston are either bland, conservative oil & gas people or rednecks with monster truck pickups and gun racks.

    • Helen Damnation

      And that fucking traffic! Jeez!

They voted in a Lesbian mayor, didn’t they? Well…we can’t always get what we want.

Austin is okay, I have an old friend there. I have family all over Texas, and they’re all redneck racist bastards.

        • Steve Teeter

I have a friend who grew up in Austin. He says he is not a Texan. He is a recovering Texan.

    • We’re all moving on to the Boycott Houston phase, which was the plan all along and you’re still a twat. Fuck off.

    • MDB

When are you posting pics of you “literally” eating your shoe ???

  • KnownDonorDad

Why is Garrison Keillor being so mean?

    • Mike__in_Houston

I can’t find online whatever it was that Garrison Keillor said, but I’ve never cared for him at all. I never listen to his radio program, but stumbled onto an episode a few weeks ago and stayed tuned because I liked the guest who was on. I found that monologue he did toward the end, which I’m guessing must be a regular feature, to be boring and absolutely interminable. What an ego. I finally couldn’t stand that droning any more and turned it off, regardless of whether the guest was returning, which I don’t think she was at that point.

  • Blake Jordan

    Not surprised in the slightest!

Time to be deeply sickened by all the celebration of hate to follow.

  • Blake Jordan

Time for the Super Bowl to move, there are many other stadiums in states (or at least cities) that protect all citizens.

    • Helen Damnation

The NFL will have a big problem with the Super Bowl being in Houston, don’t you think?

      • Blake Jordan

You would think so, given the noise they have made about being more “inclusive”, but they did not make the threat before the vote, so…

    • McSwagg

Don’t forget the NCAA Final Four is in Houston in March 2016.

  • Ninja0980

By the way, the people for our side were warned their tactics weren’t working and like with Prop 8, they refused to listen.
Between this and KY, I feel sick.

    • TrollopeReader

did they actually have any tactics?

    • danolgb

Yup.. We should send them all copies of Milk.

  • Brad Lathem

Now I honestly see why my (trans) girlfriend doesn’t follow politics. This is the exact sort of scenario that she’s said has caused her to be unable to follow it.

F###. I guess I need to think about shipping back my University of Houston Law Center Juris Doctor. (It’s not like I’m *using* the thing, I’m a tech analyst.)

    • Mike__in_Houston

I’m not using mine either, but I’m planning to keep it. Once every few years something happens where I manage to drop into the conversation that I have a law license, and it’s always fun to watch the surprised look on people’s faces. Besides, I get free admission to the performances at the Moores Opera Center just for being an alumni…

  • Raising_Rlyeh

Fuck Texas. I wish we could just give it back to the mexico. What is the most striking thing is that they apparently don’t think trans-men exist or that they would be a “threat” to men. No, all those delicate little flowers of texan women must be protected.

  • Ore Carmi

Sadly, it wasn’t even close. 61% Against, 39% For. No danger of progress here.

      • In spite of the fact that the HERO failed to pass, this vote actually does show some progress in Harris County. In 2005 the unconstitutional Ban on Marriage was passed in Harris Co. at 72.5% (for the ban) to 25.5% (against the ban).

In my city, yesterday was the mayor and city council election. My neighborhood has a significant numbers of gays and lesbians. I worked at the polls (signing people in, working the machines — not outside for a campaign), and was really disappointed that very few of the gays showed up to vote (and I checked the absentee/early voter list). Credit to the many lesbians who showed up (more lesbians than gays), and the few gays, but there were a lot who did not. And these are professionals, 30-40-50-year-old people. Fortunately the (D)s won, and maybe those who didn’t show up just thought they didn’t need to vote because the (D)s were already favored. But as we have seen, bad people win because some (D)s are apathetic and conservatives are more motivated. I think the margin of the win sends an important message too. A victor who wins 51-49 probably feels he/she needs to be more moderate than someone who wins 60-40, or 70-30.

    • There were some bright spots last night. Pennsylvania Democrats got a clean sweep of Supreme Court seats. That means fairness in redistricting and probably new house seats.

      • Joe in PA

yay! Thank you for posting, I was just about to go looking…

        • It was a mixed bag to be sure. Wins in Pennsylvania, huge losses in Kentucky and Salt Lake City will have a lesbian mayor!

    • Christopher Smith

      Amen to that.

  • Helen Damnation

Now I REALLY never want to go back to Texas. I’m so sorry for everyone in Houston, but this leads to some serious Super Bowl issues, does it not?

Born and raised in Texas. Didn’t like it (except for the 4-year governorship of Ann Richards). So glad when I go back that I live in New York now.

I still find it interesting that Houston rejected the ordinance yet, there are still other major cities in Texas have substantially similar ordinances in place.

I’m sure that once things cool down and Turner becomes the next Mayor of Houston, it is very likely that the city council will revisit the issue.

  • Blake Jordan

Can someone explain to me how this similar or not to marriage equality and Prop 8 in California?

I thought the big issue with that was the rights were granted, by the state legislature, and then stripped away by the vote.
    Same as this…

    • danolgb

CA was not by legislature, it was by courts.

      • Blake Jordan

That makes no sense that a courts decision could be over turned by a “popular vote”…

        • danolgb

The state courts ruled that Prop 22 was unconstitutional. This allowed us to get married. So, the haters came along and enacted Prop 8 which was a constitutional amendment. We made all the same mistakes in the Prop 8 battle as in the HERO battle. We erased ourselves from our own stories and made others the face. Maybe some day we’ll go back to the ways of Harvey Milk.

    • TrollopeReader

there was a big hoorah about how many people signed the petitions, etc. Long court battle. Whiners got it back on the ballot ….

  • TMA

“Why boycott the city when only 22% of the people voted?” Oh, I’m sorry, I suppose we’ll just order a re-vote, then! Silly us!

On a serious note, the Democratic bench in so many states has been wiped out.
I gladly voted for Obama and would do so again but it’s hard to state how much of a beating we’ve taken on the state and local level since he was elected.

          • itsjoe618

Well considering I do not live in TX, I am not getting anything out of this result. The state is f*cked tho, they had a governors race last year and only 27% of eligible voters showed up to the polls; that’s pretty pathetic even judged by the dismal low turn out elections of recent years.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            Wasnt california even lower

          • itsjoe618

Idk about California, but if you were not such a partisan troglodyte you would know that turnout is not a D vs R issue. New York also had 27% turn out last year too, so it’s a national problem.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

This is good because the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has a hand in legislative redistricting. Expect Democrats to gain seats and maybe a majority in the legislature after the 2021 census.

  • Joseph Miceli

This whole thing reminds me of Ken Mehlman and 2004. Remember? Well, look at us now!
Change is coming and all the hateful shit sacks in Tex-ass can’t stop it. No one can. We will prevail!

Now, let’s see how the Supreme Court feels about voting on people’s basic civil rights. Last I checked they were not big fans of that.

    • danolgb

Unfortunately, SCOTUS has had plenty of chances to rule that we are a suspect class. Even in all our wins there, they still haven’t taken that important step that would have short circuited all this.

  • Brooklyn Joe

Our civil rights should not be voted upon

    • ultragreen

It’s not going to matter in the long run, the courts will eventually make discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation illegal throughout the country. Just like all of those anti-gay marriage laws were finished off by the courts. Houston referendum is one of the last gasps of the homo-haters.

      • Brooklyn Joe

Yes I hope you’re right – but it is still gonna cost a lot of court time and heartache in the meanwhile

Texas is about as close as you can get to hell in this country, except it is hotter in Texas and the people in charge are more evil than those in hell.

    • JoeNCA

      Everything’s bigots in Texas.

I think that’s how the saying goes.

  • Mark_in_MN

This is why questions like these, and other state and local elections, should only occur in even numbered years along with, at least, congressional races. Even in off-year (non-presidential) elections, there is greater turnout than most off-off-year elections.

    • Vista-Cruiser

That would be nice, but why can’t Democrats and other progressives vote in every election?

      • Mark_in_MN

Are you sure it’s the fault of Democrats and progressives not voting, or is it people who aren’t really partisan or particularly attached and connected to politics, but who often vote for Democrats and for progressive positions, who aren’t voting?

        • Vista-Cruiser

No matter who you are, if you’re a US citizen, you should vote in every single election.

But I do blame the Democratic Party for letting Republicans frame the argument and for not getting our voters out to the polls.

  • Texpat

I predict that both the NCAA Final Four and the Superbowl will move. I don’t think it will change anything though; at least not in the short run. I argued until I was blue in the face about the bathroom nonsense and it was impossible to move anyone’s view. Do you know how many people actually believed the ordinance was unneeded because there are already federal protections? A lot. I couldn’t even convince those idiots using facts. It is hard to feel good about Houston or Texas or America at this moment.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            You got google

          • kevin vincent

            S nomproof then? Go figure

          • Christopher Smith

Moron. No link, no proof. More of your steaming EXCREMENT.

          • MDB

            Prove it !?!?!

            ASSHOLE.

          • kevin vincent

I asked him continuously and nothing

          • Texpat

Because the uneducated and ignorant bigots hid their anti-gay bias behind the lie that you just restated and others fell for it. Seriously what are you doing trolling a gay blog anyway?

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Having a good time soaking in the victory and seeing the tides change

          • kevin vincent

Like I said Texas is not a set for the rest of the country especially when nearly 60% of the country support gay rights Trans people are just the next target for demonization

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Granted more people support religious rights

          • kevin vincent

Not after Kim Davis even AP showed the majority are now against religious exception for federal employees

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Nope still the same view, ap also showed only 42% of americans support gay marriage

          • kevin vincent

Which is the majority and you ignore the fact about 56% are AGAINST using religion as a way to refuse them licenses butnhey gotta grasp at something not to mention AP is an outlier

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Actually 40% were against and 18% didnt care or had no opinion

          • kevin vincent

Ignoring the most recent poll huh? Davis pretty much killed support for religious excemptions

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Not really they had a poll that hero would win. How did that turn out

          • kevin vincent

On AP I do believe that had nothing with the poll showing the majority are against religious exceptions

          • Texpat

Hardly a tide…it is barely a wave. Now watch what comes from this. I predict we have federal equal rights protections in 2-3 years. Be careful what you wish for.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Lol how democrats are not gonna win the white house, and you have been saying that for years but it never passes. Even between 08 and 10

          • Texpat

I’ll see you back here in 2016. I expect to hear you congratulate Hillary because there is no way a Republican of today’s variety will win the White House. It is statistically impossible. And I am a Republican but wouldn’t vote for any of the clowns running today.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Granted shes losing to the gop in most if not all polls

          • Christopher Smith

You really are psycho. Faux Noise is not a reliable source, moron troll.

          • McSwagg

The tides haven’t changed. This is just more shit bubbling up from the sewers due to the recent flooding.

          • Christopher Smith

Yes you pigs do love to wallow in your SHIT…

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            Gay is a choice

          • TrollopeReader

So is stupidity — and it shows.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            Prove its not

          • Arkansan

There are hundreds of people here that are experts about being gay, and your information comes from where?

          • Texpat

Ask a gay person if they chose to be gay. Ask a straight person if they chose to be straight. There is your proof. Sexual orientation is not chosen.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Well straight is natures plan and everyone is born hetero, so whats your excuse

          • Texpat

ignorance is bliss. i hope you have a gay or transgendered kid. Although that is a terrible thing to wish you on a kid.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Both are fixible and can be cured

          • MDB

            Prove it ?????

‘fixible?’ Finish that GED, if you can…….LMAO

          • ultragreen

          • ultragreen

Homosexuality is common among animals in nature, especially among the more intelligent species, like dolphins and monkeys. Homosexuality has always existed, it currently exists, and it will always exist in the future, regardless of what you think about it.

            The people won

          • Christopher Smith

No. The moronic hatemongering ASSHOLES won, for a very very short time. 🙂

          • TrollopeReader

they said yes to discrimination against veterans, the disabled (including the governor), and all sorts of other things one can discriminate against. And it was a straight man who lured a 12 year old girl into a Houston CVS bathroom and had sex with her.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

That is a lie, those are protected federally and in texas law

          • Arkansan

Why does it only seem to be men writing about a problem with men in women’s restrooms? Could it be the women know it’s not really a problem?

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Why are you supporting women in danger

          • Arkansan

You should feel so proud to be grouped with Arkansas and Michigan, The bar was sure set high.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Hey you lost and the tides are changing

          • Arkansan

Our side doesn’t win by spreading lies, hate and fear, so there is that.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

    • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

        Who’s whining? I’m just making a statement.

        • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

          Seems like you are

          • Sam

If you can’t tell the difference between whining and making a statement, then clearly you shouldn’t be on the internet.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            You seemed to have lost

          • Sam

            You are very perceptive.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Now women and girls will be safe

          • Sam

            (rolls eyes)

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            Yep

          • kevin vincent

Not from people like Josh Duggar and his pedophile protecting parents and cults but who cares if a Fundy group is being sued for hiding child molestation

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Granted gays account for a large portion of child abuse

          • kevin vincent

Yay more mode bullshit with no proof! Ironically recent studies show that gay parents spend the most time with their children and thevasr majority of child molestation nis heterosexal by nature

          • FLL

2010: DADT repeal (supported by popular opinion)
2015: marriage equality nationwide (supported by popular opinion)

We won big. You’re just picking on a different target now to soothe your hurt feelings because you think that trans people are a weaker target. Hope that makes you feel better but, don’t forget who kicked your ass.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            42% is not a majority

          • FLL

42% is the Houston ordinance that most voters thought was only about trans rights. 42% sure isn’t public support for DADT repeal and nationwide marriage equality.

      • FLL

2010: DADT repeal (supported by popular opinion)
2015: marriage equality nationwide (supported by popular opinion)

Actually, you lost big. What you’re doing now is picking on a weaker target after having suffered two huge defeats. We kicked your ass. Now you’re picking on trans people because they’re a smaller and weaker target. OK, fine, but don’t forget who kicked your ass.

        • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

42% according to ap is not a majority lol

          • FLL

Your percentage refers to the Houston ordinance, and everyone is reporting that voters thought it was only about trans rights. DADT repeal and marriage are huge, and public support is no pathetic 42%. You lost the two big ones, and now your feelings are hurt, so you’re pushing trans people around. OK, hope that makes you feel better, but don’t ever forget who kicked your ass.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Ya but you never got protected class status, and it only takes one justice to say civil unions not marriage

          • FLL

You can always dream, I guess.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

No you didn’t get protected class status and as i said no amendment or law about gay marriage so it only takes a judge.

          • Steve Teeter

You don’t really understand how the court system works, do you? Judges are bound by Supreme Court precedent. An individual judge can’t just overturn a SCOTUS ruling just because he doesn’t like it.

          • Christopher Smith

We will. Can’t wait to see you writhing in agony when HILLARY CLINTON is inaugurated, troll! 😀

          • kevin vincent

42% is a majority considering it ‘s higher than the opposition and the fact every other poll shows support much higher (and even AP shows that the majority are against using religion as a justification for discrimination)

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

42 to 40 not much really

          • kevin vincent

Still lost and any opposition to gay marriage fell flat you lost gays and you will lose on Trans people as well just as you lost on every issues

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Well thanks to 5 judges not using the constitution

          • kevin vincent

Guess the 14th Amendment Equal Protection and Due Process aren’t part of the Constitution aren’t part of the Constitution who knew?

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Actually the 14th amendment does not deal with gays, sodomy was illegal when it was ratified.

          • kevin vincent

So was interracial marriage and it took nearly a century for Blacks to get full civil rights in the country after it was ratified. You lost on all those issues also Sodomy laws were stuck down 12 years ago do keep up

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Well they were born that way, why should they be held back due to it. You wernt born this way

          • MDB

          • Paula

That constitution thing is really a pain when it doesn’t go your way, isn’t it?
We can still get married. MOFO.

Bring it on, you flaming hemorrhoidal PUSTULE.

Hey houston will still have the superbowl

          • Phil

Oh yes, for now. What about the other 51 weeks of the year? And there are other venues for it.

            Of course. Hehehe!

Dream on, troll. Wait about three or four years. You hatemongering imbeciles will lose–finally and permanently.

        • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Tides sure are changing tonight was a bad night for the gay bigots

          • Sam

Dear Troll, if you are new to this opposing LGBT rights, you should be aware that the LGBT community doesn’t give easily.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Gay is a choice, why you want extra rights for a choice is beyond me

          • peacfulseas inWA

Religion is a choice, why do you want special rights?

          • MDB

Most things are WAAAAAY BEYOND you, simpleton !!!

          • kevin vincent

Welcome to believe that but again Indiana

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

And texas will just be stronger, the gay victim hood support is drying up

          • kevin vincent

Gays are pretty damn good at turning the tables remember how you lost Marriage equality?

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Actually you did not use the constitution and had 5 judges do that. Great job spitting on america

          • We don’t spit. We swallow. Spitting is a waste of a good nut. Please, for your own good, try harder with your snark. It’s becoming an embarrassment for you.

          • stevenj

The 14th amendment is not part of the Constitution?

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

It is, but was not made for sexual choice or behavior. Sodomy was illegal when it was ratified

          • MDB

            FlaggeD !!!

          • kevin vincent

            So was interracial marriage dipshit

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Interrical marriage is irrelevant to said discussion. If it was baker would have won his case and gay marriage would have been legal in 71.

          • kevin vincent

And now nitnis legal you still lost

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Well i dont know why you compare interracial to gay marriage, one is marriage the other is a scam for benefits

          • kevin vincent

I compare it because the same group of people (Fundies like you) fought against and lost both. Both are marriage in the eyes of the government your opinion means diddly

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

No law or amendment on it so one judge can change it

          • MDB

What civics class did you FAIL ???????

          • kevin vincent

Err nope! The only thing that can overturn a Supreme Court ruling is either a Constitutional Amendment (not happening they couldn’t get one past during the Bush years and certainly not happening now) or another Supreme Court case overrulling it which is even more unlikely

            Civics fail!

          • stevenj

This is where your “argument” evaporates. You are ignoring 100 years of SCOTUS decisions re: the 14th Amendment. But go ahead and keep your head in the sand although the rest of us know it’s up your ass. BTW, the Houston anti discrimination ordinance will be reintroduced and will become law in another form.

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

Well why did gay marriage lose in the scotus twice then

          • stevenj

Same sex marriage won in June – where were (are) you?

          • democrats_are_a_danger_to_kids

            Yep with out the constitution

          • Paula

No, just the parts you don’t like, right?

          • MDB

You mean out with the United States Constitution, ArtIcile III that established the US Supreme Court ???
            THAT one ????

          • stevenj

The 14th amendment was created to protect race, why it was a 9 to 0 ruling not a 5 to 4

Where in the 14th Amendment is race mentioned…? Oh nowhere? Pretty sure it says ALL citizens!

Houston is not the Convention destination of Texas. Dallas and San Antonio are the convention cities. Houston is an oil refining city and a shipping port, which can’t be easily relocated.

      • Tigernan Quinn

Every city has tourism, and departments of tourism dedicated to such. You’re right, but you’re also very wrong.

      • The biggest impact is likely to be the arts but hardly anyone who voted against HERO will give a damn about that.

      • Mark Cross

Yeah, but Houston is also the 4th largest city in the USA. SOMEbody, if only for work, has to go there to deal with all those Whos in Whoville. And someone on a municipal, county, or regional level has to now repeatedly explain to those more enlightened visitors who express concern that Houstonians are not ALL hateful bigoted knuckle-dragging backward shit-flinging chest-beating primitive sub-humans. And good luck there you’ll need it.
My apologies, by the way, to all those NON-bigoted good, decent, hardworking knuckle-dragging backward shit-flinging chest-beating primitive sub-humans who live in Houston, and voted FOR Prop 1, and just want to live and let live.

  • jim

what if they pass the law again but without the bathroom provision?

    • Sam

It is likely that the city council will modify the bathroom provision of the repealed ordinance.

    • I’ve heard that, but it’s not an option. It’s either all of us, or we’ll keep fighting until it is. Leaving our trans brothers and sisters at the bus stop is not an option.

      • peacfulseas inWA

        Thank you.

      • LADY MABELINE

        No it is not.

    • McSwagg

They are already politically triangulating just that so that they can ‘preserve’ Houston’s ‘image’. I don’t think anyone on our side will forget that they are throwing a part of our coalition under the bus.

  • It’s a victory for the pedophile lobby. Tonight, it is now safe to rape children in the bathroom of your choice. God bless!

    • M Jackson

The Christian bigots in Houston are pedophiles raping children in bathrooms? Thanks for the heads up,
since it’s a known fact that according to law enforcement agencies across the country that has never happened with transgender people. Because they are not pedophiles. Despite the lies of the pastors and other Christian leaders in Houston.

  • ColdCountry

    Dammit all!

    • Octavio

Take two. Then take two more.

      • ColdCountry

        Thank you, I needed that.

You know, if it weren’t so dangerous, I’d love to see a group of transmen start touring the women’s rooms of Houston.

        • Octavio

Only if they all wear in-line skates. (faster to get away from the police) 🙂

          • ColdCountry

I wouldn’t want to endanger anyone, but I’d love to see a bunch of them go in, and after someone causes a stink and the police come and arrest them, sue the city for false arrest and whoever owns the bathroom for everything they can get. And do it again, and again, and again, and again, until the stupid fuckers get the point that so many others got years ago. A transman is a man and should be using the men’s room. They never think of transmen, only of what they would do if they could sneak into the ladies’ room. And yes, the ‘they’ I’m referring to are men, although I love to see a few of the nasty women they have in Houston meet up with a tattooed transman in the bathroom as well.

Sorry, these people make me incoherent with anger!

  • RainbowPhoenix

Houston declared that the eighth commandment was just a suggestion.

    Let the boycotts begin.

I will not buy a single product or service produced in the Lone Scum State. I will not travel there or even drive through it. Nor from any of the other states where the spirit of George Wallace rules. Fuck you, Texass!

    • McSwagg

While I agree that Houston should be boycotted, I hope you are planning to buy an electric vehicle, because most of the major US oil companies are located in Texas.

      • BudClark

        I drive an electric wheelchair.

        • Octavio

We done already got one of them thar new fangled Tesla thingys. It’s red. 🙂

        • Octavio

          But, is it red?

      • Judas Peckerwood

As a matter of fact, my ride is a Nissan Leaf — thanks for asking!

  • William

Will there be a bathroom monitor at all Houston restrooms, checking naughty bits before granting admittance?

    • I’m sure the governor would love to be the first inspector. He seems the type to love putting his fingers where they don’t belong.

      • Octavio

OK, Now ya got me. So, we’re all going to have to whip it out for admittance to the mens room? Maybe the defeat of the proposal has a silver lining after all?

        • McSwagg

Governor Abbot, like little Tommy Peters, is just the right height for the job!

          • RobynWatts

Well, just roll him right on in!

        • But only in mean girl fashion: Is that an inny or an outie?

        • peacfulseas inWA

          I volunteer.

      • Octavio

Maybe we should send him a pair of knee pads? 🙂

    • ultragreen

No. The transsexuals who look like women will continue to use the women’s bathrooms, just like they have always done, and the transsexuals who look like men will continue to use the men’s bathrooms, just like they have always done. The haters have always shared public restrooms with transsexuals in this manner, they’re just too stupid to realize it.

  • Robincho

Of course most Houstonians are obsessed with public restrooms. I mean, just look how full of shit they are…

    • McSwagg

No, the shit is all bubbling out of the sewers onto the streets with all the recent flooding in the last two weeks. It’s a real problem.

  • DutchBoy74

Don’t worry. Someone is going to sue the godly people of Texas, and then they will all have to pay for it with their make believe budget.

  • Bj Lincoln

    This is so sad.

  • DumbHairyApe

So, they’re saying they want a woman, who used to be a man, but now looks every bit like a woman, using the men’s restroom???

This makes no sense to me.

For those who say that gays don’t face discrimination simply for who they are and need no additional protections. http://www.queerty.com/elderly-lgbt-activist-and-husband-hospitalized-following-hate-crime-outside-palm-springs-gay-bar-20151103

  • Tammy Rainey

Is it legally possible for Houston to now pass an ordinance that is word-for-word like Austin’s? Then every time it’s attacked with a lie simply say “go to Austin andfind proof that what you predict actually happened”

If HRC refuses to stop being queasy about addressing anti-trans lies, things are about to get MUCH worse because it’s absolutely sure that Perkins et al will attempt to replicate this effort in every city in the South (and the Plains and the Midwest) that ares have the temerity to try to pass such a law.

  • Jack M.

This is what happens when you take an all-or-nothing position. Very often, you get nothing. Transsexuals in bathrooms is a new issue for a lot people. It raises questions in their minds about women’s safety and how this proposed law will be enforced. These same people would have voted handily to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. They aren’t “haters.” But they need more time on the newer “gender identity” issues. Any sane movement would have gotten the sexual orientation provisions passed, thus benefiting millions of Houstonians (including trans people who are gay or are perceived to be gay). And then we would have used that victory to propel further efforts on the remaining issues. But trans activists aren’t about sanity. They want what they want, when they want it, and they couldn’t care less about LGBs. And now, not only have they harmed gays, lesbians and bisexuals, not only do they have nothing for themselves, but they are worse off than if this had never been raised in the first place. Because now there has been a popular rejection of their demands, which takes the issue off the table for at least several years. Thanks, trans activists and their zombie cheering section!

    • peacfulseas inWA

With all due respect ….screw you. It was ignorance, lies, fear mongering and voter apathy that derailed the issue. Several tx cities provide the same protections that were on this ballot. The fundies and just plain ignorant asswipes are still butt hurt that they failed to prevent marriage equality.

  • Mark

    Fuck. You Texas.

  • Maryanne Hicks

i’ve live in a suburb of Houston since 2002. as if losing everything for the transgender activists wasn’t bad enough, they hardly did anything to help defend the law. they make all kinds of demands, attack us constantly and tell the nytimes that there won’t be any more progress on gay rights until we cave to their demands. and then we do cave & do everything they want and it is time for them to show up and be useful, and they bale. we seriously need to rethink how we got here. lgbt is supposed to be an alliance not a suicide pact.

  • rabbit_ears

Happily I’ve avoided Texas all my life. I see no reason to change my personal beliefs on this.

I think it would be great if a lot of very feminine looking trans women and very masculine looking trans men made a pilgrimage to Houston and used as many restrooms as possible. See how many get arrested for using the ‘wrong’ one.

  • DaveW

I am appalled that an elected official will/can lie like that. It was never about what he says. It is crazy, and dumb people believe it

I am more and more convinced that the U.S has breed itself stupid. I encounter profanely stupid people every day.

So many people have no idea how crazy and stupid Carsen is. I try to explain he is just pandering-they love what he is saying (some of it does sound good) but they never consider if he can actually govern. I bring it up and get a blank stare.

We need to elect good leaders, administrators who can achieve things, not people who can read talking points. The media say “she was sharp” “he was on
His game”. Irrelevant to ability to govern!!!

Seriously we have become a stupid country. Sad.

  • Stev84

    Disgusting state. Disgusting people.

  • Michael

What should really happen is that all the Trans Guys should go to Houston and go int he Women’s Rest Rooms.. They might change their minds after that. But it’s Texas so maybe not.

  • I hope one day we learn how to run an issue campaign. Hollywood celebrities don’t help win over moderates. In fact outsiders coming in telling people what to do tends to backfire, cue the “elites” meme. I love Sally Field that didn’t help any.

The reality is that conservatives hate gay people and when they are anonymous they love showing that. They might smile to your face as you pass them in the hall at work, but they hate us.

Also, they latched onto this “bathroom” meme over a year ago and it was never really rebutted. There have been none of the problems they are fearmongering with happening in Dallas or Austin or anywhere else with lbgt discrimination laws. It was an outright lie but it’s been on auto-repeat for over a year. Overcoming that was going to be hard, but it was hardly challenged. Why? Do liberals really think voters are smart enough to see through such nonsense? The answer is: obviously not.

  • Mark

Abbot, Paxton, and Patrick may all be gloating now – but we will find a way to turn this around. The defeat of HERO is a nasty kick in the teeth especially when we know the opposition was spearheaded by religion – again. Yes, all of our rights have become a battle war with the churches – and what they don’t get is the distasteful take away by the youngins who see their freedoms trampled – and who will be our future leaders. The church is losing because they have failed to change. Their reliance on fear to brow beat folks into submission is losing – as it should.

So now we have to find that emotional and/or legal inroad to turn the table on their hate. With every day that passes, more leave the church to join hands with the ideals and values of equality – for ALL.

  • Toasterlad

    Fucking Texas.

    • Mark

Just hang on – it’s gonna get a really good fucking by the time this is over. And it is far from over.

      • TexasBoy

Oh please, people here, especially those in their 50s, 60s and 70s, don’t care. I was in Walgreen’s not long ago and an obvious elderly Faux News junkie was complaining about Obamacare, socialized medicine, and so forth. I asked her what she thought of her Medicare, Social Security and her husband military benefits. She was all in favor of them, just not and type of Socialized program. I told her those were all a type of Socialized program. This lady said that’s not true, ’cause she saw it on the Internet, and she has an email from Rush to prove it.

        • Mark

They care – but they care based on the bullshit lies and propaganda they’ve been fed. Our job now is to cast some sun shine on all that bullshit – and watch how it changes colors….

  • Sam_Handwich

    so….what the hell happened?

    • Mark

It wasn’t pretty. Don’t look – lest you got a pint to pour in your coffee.

  • Skokieguy

Thousands of male (straight) perverts and rapists are distraught because they were totally planning on dressing up like women so they could be completely undetected as they enter women’s restrooms to peek at, molest and rape women (and children!).

But now that equality has been repealed, they are completely unable to complete their nefarious plans because of a change in the city’s laws. They will now be totally incapable of walking into a women’s public restroom, because we all know that perverts, rapists and molesters are law abiding citizens….

Come on Caitlyn, you worked so hard on your series to try and educate about trans issues. Get some of the girls together and head to Houston’s male public restrooms, in full compliance with the current law. I’m sure lots of cameras will follow you.

    • Sam_Handwich

well now there’s an interesting idea!

  • Sam_Handwich
  • jayjonson

Sadly, our campaign was awful. It pretended the issue was anything but gay rights and transgender rights, making videos about how veterans and mothers and anybody but us were the ones who needed this ordinance. Campaigns that keep us invisible are doomed to lose. We learned that in North Carolina and in the Prop 8 Campaign. Why do we keep making such mistakes. We have to call out the bigots for who they are and make our lives matter.

  • This has happened before. The Republican Party — and this ordinance was backed by them — always finds a way to appeal to irrational but very real fears to stymie progressive legislation and elect right-wing candidates. They are great at this. Let me give three other examples in which this happened — Willie Horton — and appeal to racial hatred — elected George Bush #1 in 1988, Opposition to Marriage Equality in a very different (than today) Ohio in 2004 reelected George Bush over Kerry by helping the mobilize the urban evangelical to vote Republican or sit out the election, and California Proposition 8 rejecting Marriage Equality in 2008 was narrowly passed due to organized Church opposition. The important thing to do is not to give up and realize that time is on the side of progress. I would be interested to see a tally of the Houston vote to see which traditional Democratic Party groups failed to support equality and concentrate my outreach and educations efforts there

  • Silver Badger

Judging solely from his picture, Mr. Patrick is trans-gendered himself. I wonder how much trouble HE will have using public restrooms?
