RNC Caves, Fires NBC From Upcoming GOP Debate

This weekend GOP presidential candidates are scheduled to meet and plot on how to remove the RNC from future debate decisions. RNC chairman Reince Preibus, hoping to thwart a palace coup, has beaten them to the punch and fired NBC. From his letter:

I write to inform you that pending further discussion between the Republican National Committee (RNC) and our presidential campaigns, we are suspending the partnership with NBC News for the Republican primary debate at the University of Houston on February 26, 2016. The RNC’s sole role in the primary debate process is to ensure that our candidates are given a full and fair opportunity to lay out their vision for America’s future. We simply cannot continue with NBC without full consultation with our campaigns.

The CNBC network is one of your media properties, and its handling of the debate was conducted in bad faith. We understand that NBC does not exercise full editorial control over CNBC’s journalistic approach. However, the network is an arm of your organization, and we need to ensure there is not a repeat performance.

CNBC billed the debate as one that would focus on “the key issues that matter to all voters—job growth, taxes, technology, retirement and the health of our national economy.” That was not the case. Before the debate, the candidates were promised an opening question on economic or financial matters. That was not the case. Candidates were promised that speaking time would be carefully monitored to ensure fairness. That was not the case. Questions were inaccurate or downright offensive. The first question directed to one of our candidates asked if he was running a comic book version of a presidential campaign, hardly in the spirit of how the debate was billed.

The letter goes on to vow that there will, somehow, somewhere, be a GOP debate that day. And that the right wing National Review will have a role. Because NBC was biased, you see.

  • Xuuths

It would be interesting to see what actually was promised by CNBC ahead of time, and not just Rancid Prius’ claims — they’re likely to be as accurate as tRUMP’s.

  • Judas Peckerwood

Media outlets of any political stripe shouldn’t be running debates. Bring back the League of Women Voters!

    • noni

I wish the Democrats would use that type of debate forum.

I guess the networks would refuse to air the debate if they weren’t able to control the questions so that they could interject as much drama and sensationalism as possible to boost their profits by making it into a circus.

      • Circ09

In another 4 to 8 years Networks probably won’t matter in the equation. League of Women Voters or whomever (likely affiliates of the Party) will “air” debates from the internet & Netflix/Hulu like sites.

        • Octavio

The Republicans have worked diligently to invalidate the existence of the League of Women Voters for the last 20+ years. Anyone notice that they’ve pretty much quite their voter registration drives because of possible law suits for breaking the new voter legislation passed in the last few years? And the NRA is on their ass big time for their official stance on gun control. Yet another good grass roots institution being silenced by conservative-supported legislation that makes voting more difficult for everyone.

          • Circ09

Yeah. Voter Registration is dead. But I still rely on their pamphlets that explain local issues and constitutional amendments, etc…And they do still have some good speakers and forums here locally – usually at the Senior Center. I have hope they will rise again when the old lady Republican witches die off. I’m waiting for some of that before I join again. I just can’t with some of the local board members.

          • Octavio

They are and always have been a great organization. But they’ve been threatened to exist as much less than they used to be. They depend on donations. And they just don’t have the deep pockets to face the assaults against them in the courts. It’s a very bad situation and should never have been allowed to happen. But ‘Merikuh seems to have needed it’s fascist Republicans. Fascists since Nixon micromanaged everything except his own ego starting in 1969.

          • AmericanPaPISSED

“In most cases, California voters do not have to show identification before they vote”

I think your map is inaccurate, at best.

          • Doug105

Maybe so, one of the dangers of relying on FB to much.

          • canoebum

I’ve been voting in New York since the 1976. I’ve never been asked to show an ID.

          • Doug105

It’s a bit too easy to take them on faith, I know, since 2012 I’ve had to show both state ID and a voter card.

          • canoebum

In New York, when you enter the polling place, the clerk has a register with a copy of the signature that was on your voter registration card. You sign your name directly next to that signature; the clerk compares the two. If the match, they hand you a ballot. There’s virtually no voter fraud in New York. Now, election fraud, that’s another story, but it almost always ends up in the headlines.

          • Doug105

There’s virtually no voter fraud… Anywhere, but the minds of the gop lead sheep. Especially in person fraud.

          • Oh’behr

Hmm, I believe that graphic is incorrect. I do not have to show ID to vote in Minnesota.

          • Librarykid

            Nor do I in Maryland.

    • Gerry Fisher

Isn’t it sad that “media outlets” can now be considered to have a “political stripe”? [major bummed out face]

      • Judas Peckerwood

They always have had a political stripe, that of the corporation or wealthy individual who controls them. Media objectivity is a dangerous lie designed to fool people into believing that they’re being fed unbiased information. The sooner the scales fall from the public’s eyes, the better.

        • Veylon

Bingo. At least they were honest about their bias (if nothing else) back in the Good Old Days. Fox is far from the only media source falsely claiming to be “Fair and Balanced”.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

    • Bob Conti

      Project Runway?

  • bkmn

Reince himself selected CNBC. For that alone he should be canned. Why anyone would want a network that thinks Jim Cramer is an asset to host a debate is beyond me.

    • Octavio

Is that the same brilliant investor consultant Jim Kramer who didn’t see the economic crash happening in 2008-09? He’s sooooo smart. :-/

      • BobSF_94117

He may not be smart, but he’s loud.

        • Octavio

He’s so full of B.S. I amazed his camera crew has suffocated from the smell.

        • Gerry Fisher

Loud does seem to be in fashion lately.

        • Librarykid

Loud works for them. If you can’t be right, you can be loud.

      • bkmn

But he screams on the TV!!!!

Yes that is the moron to which I was referring. (In my best Earnestine voice)

        • Octavio

That ass wipe is a complete waste of the life force.

      • Cuberly

The home network of wack-job Rick Santelli fer Krist sake! The harbinger of the tea-bagger movement no less!

Calling CNBC liberal is so laughable. But hey, if the parent network is at the forefront of all tea baggers minds as being evil lib, mission accomplished. Look at what people are talking about, yeah, some tussles with candidates but overall it’s a flood of ire directed at CNBC. Like I said, mission accomplished.

        • Octavio

Oh, what evil men do (and that bitch Carly Fiorina).

  • ben

Oh, it gets even better. Reince just canned what would’ve been the ONLY debate on Spanish-language TV (Telemundo simulcast.)

    • TampaDink

Catering to the Latino voters….RNC, you’re doing it wrong.

      • Nic Peterson

The browns do not need to be hearing any of ReiNCe PRieBuS’ candidates’ message.

    • Octavio

Yeah. I caught that. Heard in on CNN. LOL!

    • KnownDonorDad

Reach out to the Latino community or pander to the social conservative base? I guess that answers that.

    • Michael Rush

They may get more Latino votes by not having their comments broadcast .

      • bambinoitaliano

Or exclude Trump out of the debate.

  • pickypecker
    • Herald

They threw a tantrum and won again! This just empowers them all the more.
I can tell you from experience that is no way to handle a tantrum thrower. When one of my sons was 2 or 3 he threw a tantrum, we calmly watched him till he figured out that was not working. It only took him a few minutes to do that and guess what that was his last tantrum!

      • David L. Caster

I believe GOP tantrums in front of the largest segment of the electorate possible is what will help the situation. That way, voters can play your role as they watch the remonstrations of the toddlers fail. The GOP will not, however, connect the dots.

  • delk

Careful not to shake Trump’s hand, you might get Reince’s shit on yours. Such remarkable puppetry.

  • Such babies they are! Hillary spent eleven hours taking gotcha questions all by herself, and the only one sweating was the Republican Benghazi Committee chairman.

    • Exatron

But, but, the media is supposed to fawn over them and hang on their every word. /s

      • They’re so used to Fox.

        • The Professor

They were mad at Fox too! Can’t please a toddler mid tantrum.

          • Somebody somewhere spared the rod.

          • The Professor

            Or didn’t give enough rod… 😉

    • b

They can’t handle difficult questions?? Pussies and assholes.

    • Henri205

That ‘debate’ was a complete joke. Someone posted on one of these threads that they wished the League of Women Voters would sponsor one. Completely agree.

they’re babies because they don’t have anything substantive to say, so when they get put on the spot, they complain that everyone’s “out to get them.” people need to be held accountable for their positions on things.

  • JaniceInToronto

Let the gays and atheists run the debates just for a fun old time…

      great visual Sam. Ahem.

total aside: I just returned from your neck-o-woods…love that area! My 96 y/o Waban friend is doing well and feisty as ‘evah’. Good thing we couldn’t watch the debate (she doesn’t have cable or internet), she would have been yelling at the screen. It was thrilling to be around such a progressive!

  • Gustav2

Well, we all know NBC news is to the left of Bernie Sanders!

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Couldn’t handle the heat and got out of the kitchen!

    Cowards.

  • Octavio

Ted Cruz is yelling to have the Republican debates be managed completely by the Republican Party “because we are the people Republicans are voting for in the Primary.” He seems to think this would eliminate those pesky mediators who insist upon asking hard questions. Yeah. That’d work. ‘Cause it’s all the CNBC mediators’ fault the GOP candidates looked so stupid and confused during the debate. Ben
Carson’s all upset about the “gotcha” question regarding his affiliation with Mannatech, a snake oil health product company he’s endorsed and appeared to shout the virtues of that company on their home page. All references and photos have been subsequently been removed from that site. Yet Carson inisists his butt is clean and having to defend his relationship with the snake oil manufacturer. Yeah. He’s innocent. No one needs to know about that. So, he’s all up in a huff regarding journalists and the “librul” media in control of asking Republicans questions. Only Republicans should be allowed to ask any Republican and question in his fantasy of the USA.

And “Little Ricky” Rubio cancels two — count ’em — two glad handing events to promote his campaign so he can bravely vote for the budget today. Wow! What a sacrifice. He’s actually going to play like he’s doing his job? Hell has frozen over.

At leas Rubio won’t be returning to the Senate after he loses his bid for the presidency. Maybe something can be done about Rand Paul, too.

    The poor, put upon, abused Republicans. Bwaaaaaaaa. . . . . 🙂

    • Gustav2

And when Cruz was asked a financial question he changed the subject and went on his tirade.

      • Cuberly

Well, to be fair, it was a question re; his demeanor and record of not being able to compromise. Which was a legitimate question in relation to his fantastical tax plan. How would he get it passed if he’s an unyielding jackass.

So, will we have Rush Limbaugh as the debate moderator? Will it go live on RedState or TownHall or National Review? Fox News, again? How insulated is this party going to make themselves?

  • DaddyRay

There really is no format that will make these clowns look good and still be classified as a debate

    • David L. Caster

First of all, there are too many of them for a meaningful “debate”. Second, most of them know full well that they will never make it past March of 2016 and are just there to turn campaign season into a moneymaker for themselves. Finally, the GOP has no clue how to govern in a sensible fashion nor focus on the real problems the country, as a whole, faces.

  • Secure

Are they going to fire every “liberal” moderator out there too? Their issue is the moderators not the network who is broadcasting. They are morons.

  • Robert Conner

There’s an obvious solution: Fux News will host the next GOP debate and it will be moderated by Fox and Friends.

    • Octavio

And only Hasselbutt and Steve Doocy will be allowed to ask questions by slipping cards written in crayon to the master debaters.

  • Cuberly

Wow the twitchy trolls and other paid right-wing commentors are infiltrating everywhere. Mediate is overrun right now with a host of trolls spewing newer and oddly similar talking points. Desperately trying to point everything towards Obama and Hillz.

    The GOP:

We will not answer any questions that force us to divulge exactly what we have in mind for the country (assuming we HAVE any concrete plans, aside from doing whatever the rich and their corporations demand).

You will not question our policies–any from the past or being considered for the future–what consequences those actions and policies have already had in the past–like the meltdown and the recession–or are likely to have on the economy and the American people in the future (if we’re put in full charge of government as of January 2017).

You will not question or challenge our records, any actions we’ve taken to date in our careers –no matter how questionable, embarrassing or controversial.

We will NOT be held accountable. You will not confront us with FACTS that show we’re deliberate LIARS or with studies that show the policies we favour will lead to hardship for MILLIONS and a deterioration of the economy (through neglected infrastructure, and poor access to a quality education) and–with it– the social fabric of this nation, threatening the standard of living (of all but the rich) and our standing on the world stage.

Indeed, you will not suggest, for the purposes of debate, that our policies put the rich FIRST while doing little or NOTHING to help improve the lot of anyone ELSE in this country, that we actually HARM all other classes of society, that we wish to abandon the General Welfare in depraved deference to unlimited GREED and callous SELFISHNESS.

You will not question our refusal to vigorously defend the Rule of Law in this free society or our growing support for using religion as an EXCUSE to permit legally sanctioned discrimination that would impose a New Segregation in 21st-century America, allowing MILLIONS to be turned away in the public square because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation.

You will not question the extreme and divisive, often RACIST statements many of us make, that pit one group against another, and threaten to tear this country APART.

You will ask only questions that make it easy for us to paint ourselves as the saviours of this country, based on our assertions ALONE, devoid of ANY supporting evidences, of ANY foundation in fact or reality.

You will permit us to spew unchallenged propaganda to our foul hearts’ content.

Christ, how I fucking HATE these THUGS!

    Grow a backbone, media!

If they won’t answer your questions, let the American people KNOW it, and tell them WHY they’re AFRAID of being looked at CLOSELY!!

    • Joe in PA

Wow Bill, I hope you feel better, that was quite the rant! Good job!

      • billbear1961

I feel a little better, Joe!

Christ, how I fucking HATE the bastards, AND the media that WON’T stand up to them!!

They won’t answer questions and say what they want to do because they KNOW their policies are unpopular!

They don’t want to have to try to defend what they KNOW is INDEFENSIBLE!!

The media should complain that they won’t answer, and explain or speculate–they like that, right?–about WHY they don’t want to answer.

Ask acknowledged experts on the issues!

        Ask their opponents!

The media can have at them; and, in interviews, Democrats can say what I’ve just said and present their evidence to support their charges!

HAVE AT THEM, the fucking COWARDS!!

        MAKE them ANSWER!!
