Cruz, Jindal, & Huckabee To Speak At Event Organized By “Death To Gays” Pastor Kevin Swanson [VIDEO]

Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, and Mike Huckabee are all scheduled to speak at an Iowa event organized by Pastor Kevin Swanson, who regularly calls for a return to the “biblical punishment” for homosexuality. Right Wing Watch points us to the press release:

Over 1,600 Christians around the country are gathering for a National Religious Liberties Conference, Freedom 2015, November 6th-7th at the Iowa Events Center. The conference speakers and attendees will celebrate the freedoms God has bestowed on our country, encourage those who have been persecuted or those who may experience persecution in the future and develop strategies for defending religious liberties for Christian business owners, teachers, evangelists, chaplains, employees and churches. The conference is sponsored by over a dozen evangelical organizations including American Family Association, Liberty Institute, Samaritan Ministries and Generations.

Speakers will include presidential candidates Senator Ted Cruz, Governor Mike Huckabee and Governor Bobby Jindal, persecuted Christians David and Jason Benham, Naghmeh Abedini, Richard & Betty Odgaard, SMSgt Phillip Monk, Aaron & Melissa Klein and Randy Pfaff, and religious freedom advocates Kelly Schackelford, Rafael Cruz, James Lansberry, Brigadier General Douglas Lee, USA (ret), Bob Vander Plaats, Bradley Pierce and Chuck Hurley. The conference will address religious liberty in the military, medical care, parenting, education and the workplace. Conference speakers will also highlight the history of religious liberties and religious persecution.

Right Wing Watch has compiled some of Swanson’s more outrageous statements, some of which have appeared here on JMG.  People For The American Way, the parent of Right Wing Watch, has issued a formal call for GOP candidates to cancel their speeches:

“We already knew that the Republican Party opposed LGBT rights and women’s equality, but this is taking things to a new level,” said People For the American Way President Michael Keegan. “We can respectfully disagree on matters of public policy, but someone who supports gay people being put to death should have no place in our public discourse, much less be sharing the stage with a major party’s presidential candidates.” “If Cruz, Huckabee and Jindal are serious about wanting to hold the nation’s highest office,” Keegan said, “they should back out of this conference and denounce the extremism of its organizer.”

PREVIOUSLY ON JMG: Kevin Swanson says gay-friendly Nabisco loves axe murderers.  Kevin Swanson says Disney is using Frozen to make kids gay. Kevin Swanson says the Rose Bowl Parade should feature a float in which gays are stoned to death. Kevin Swanson says all gays must be imprisoned because Christian freedom. Kevin Swanson says gays caused the Colorado floods. Kevin Swanson says Christians should tell gay couples that they hope they die on their wedding day. Kevin Swanson blames homosexuality on Shakespeare.

  • Michael

It saddens me how desperate and placating the Republican presidential nominees have become. Can you imagine George H.W. Bush or even Richard Nixon attending such an event? I surely can’t.

    • BobSF_94117

Back in Nixon’s day these folks were roundly ridiculed. Bush I? When has he ever said a word against fundamentalism and its take-over of the GOP?

    • Duane Dimitrov

The party actively built up a voting base centered on every crazy prejudice and bullshit idea they could get there hands on, in order to get enough votes to enact an economic agenda by-and-for the Charles and David Kochs of America.

An agenda that could not have been implemented had the electorate not been distracted by “social” issues.

The conservative movement built this monster and, now, after decades of being told they are just one more tax cut away from true prosperity, or one more election away from the theocracy they’ve been promised, these voters have revolted and took over the party that cynically used them for decades.

And, frankly, the GOP is getting everything it so richly deserves. And you cannot blame these poor rubes, who’ve been fed incoherent horseshit propaganda for decades, for not having a coherent political argument….

      • Yes, yes, and yes.

Sadly they aren’t just taking the GOP down with them. The entire country is suffering.

        • RoFaWh

And will continue until a new, third party arises that flatly forbids all references to religion by the candidates it puts forward.

        • Duane Dimitrov

Bill Clinton’s pollster was interviewed recently, and described the GOP as a party who is (1) completely intolerant of the changes that have been taking place in America, (2) of the correct realization that we are well past any sort of demographic tipping point, and (3) completely willing to use government to hold back social and economic change.

I thought we was spot on. He also said he views the last 10 years of GOP existent as, broadly, focusing on the quest of holding back social progress as much as is possible, even though they know they simply have their finger in a dike. To me, that rings true as well: it explains a lot about the uproar over the ACA and the Obergfell ruling, and why they cannot simply move on. Acknowledging things like, “Obamacare actually works,” and “gays are, in fact, not dirty and gross and deserve their civil rights” would be admitting a kind of final defeat. Best to just ignore inconveniences like that.

          • By the late 90s the religious right realized that they had basically lost the culture wars. Gay people were not all going to back into the closet and brides were no longer going to pretend like they were virgins on their wedding night even though they were 25 years old and had had many boyfriends before their husband. It just wasn’t going to happen. So they chose gay marriage as one of a handful of fallback positions. It was the one cultural issue where they thought they couldn’t lose. And well into the 00s it looked like they were right. They made a clean sweep on gay marriage in 2004 and several elections before and after. It never occurred to them that the public, or at least a little over half the public anyway, would fully embrace the idea of same sex couples being legally married. They aren’t giving up because they don’t have anywhere to retreat now. This still seems inconceivable to them, and that much I understand because from the position of 1996 or even 2004 I didn’t think the public would change this quickly. We have to admit that this big a swing in public opinion is pretty much unprecedented. But what they also can’t see is their increasingly open bigotry against gay people is just making things worse for them. How can anyone who isn’t gay support gay rights? Because most Americans aren’t sociopaths like right-wingers and can actually imagine themselves in a different minority group wanting the same rights as everyone else.

          • Duane Dimitrov

I mean, I agree, but I think a lot of what you say is, at this point, banal.

What is truly interesting and in need of study is the pathology of the right wing. You’re right: they truly, truly cannot fathom that they are an out-of-touch minority with repulsive opinions. They truly believe that everyone holds their views, they are just being misled into thinking they don’t…a very interesting (and self-aggrandizing, and juvenile) view they have.

          • Well thanks for dismissing the background. I grew up in the Bible Belt. None of this is new. The only thing that’s new is that these folks have finally taken over the GOP. They’ve been working towards this for 30+ years but they’ve finally chased everyone else off and they’re pretty much all that’s left. Them and a few people in deep denial who just want more tax cuts.

Yes, they believe everyone holds their views or would if only they had heard them. They live in a bubble. it’s not that everyone in the bubble agrees with them as much as everyone who disagrees knows better than to speak up. I let all kinds of batshit crazy things pass without comment every day because it’s just not worth it and it accomplishes nothing. And in the rare cases when it seems like I got them to think or consider actual evidence, a few days later they come back spewing the same right wing talking points they previously admitted didn’t hold up to scrutiny.

          • Duane Dimitrov

Apologies, I wasn’t trying to be dismissive.

OMG, your last sentence rings so true. No matter what I explain to my mother, on whatever issue, she seems to think for approx. 30 seconds then acts confused and a day or so later, boom!, the same incoherent-bullshit-being-presented-as-coherent comes right out again.

While the reality is that she believes whatever is psychologically convenient to her, and just assumes that psychological comfort and coherence are exactly the same thing, I like to think of her mind as temporarily taking in unwanted info and working like mad for 24-ish hours to rid itself of the infestation.

I, personally, find it psychologically comforting.

  • Duane Dimitrov

It saddens me that Ted Cruz will not be the nominee.

Assuming the presidential nominee is Rubio–and that’s where the money is now–do you think Cruz would play second fiddle?

Or are two Latinos, even if conservatives don’t “read” Cruz as Latino, too much for the aging, white, racist, anti-gay, misogynist demographic that is today’s GOP voting bloc?

    • Robincho

We’ll see that ticket the day that Petunia Pig achieves Mach One outta my ass
(and poor Petunia gets her some airsick real easy)…

      • Duane Dimitrov

It’s going to HAVE to be a VP who serves the “crazy theocrat” category.

Why the fuck has bobby Jindal not crawled into a hole somewhere?

        Who then?

        • Homo Erectus

          • Duane Dimitrov

            Cheney isn’t a theocrat.

    • Cuberly

Unless it’s someone outside of the current clown car, I have a feeling second fiddle will be Carly.

      • Duane Dimitrov

Doubt it, they learned their lesson with Palin. They will not be facilitating the reanimation of another Frankenstein any time soon.

        • Cuberly

Cruz on the campaign trail would be a nightmare for the GOP. Not to mention NONE of the establishment, which includes Rubio, like the guy.

I stick by my Carly pick. They haven’t been able to completely kill on her claim of being “successful” and saying “business” experience to a GOPer is like cat nip to their ears.

          • Duane Dimitrov

True, they do love a CEO. And a billionaire. And the fact that the billionaire bootstrapped himself up in the world with only a massive trust fund, and the CEO ran her companyy into the ground and was fired, well, those are just inconvenient facts!

And when has the GOP ever allowed mere facts to get in the way of a psychologically satisfying narrative? Never!

          • Cuberly

Ha! The supposed evil media has been pouncing on Jeby for being so mean to Rubio all day. It’s been quite funny actually. A silver-spooner calling Marco new money trash and a talking-head on Fox chastising Jeby for it. That’s Fox playbook 101 right there. Angling for the preferred candidate despite the facts. Which btw, that NYT piece on Rubio’s financial woes should set off a shit ton of alarm bells for those that are “fiscally concerned”.

Then Carly, well, she’s hardly a Palin, she can memorize lies and push back, the GOP/TP likes it when they see pushback. Like you said, the facts of the matter……don’t.

          • Duane Dimitrov

Jeb was a ridiculously poor choice for the plutocracy to try and push on the rubes that are the American people.

I mean, seriously? I may be a liberal, but it is objectively the case that his brother was one of the least-competent presidents in American history. Why on earth would we elect another Bush?

I mean, fucking seriously! We elected a Black man with the middle name “Hussein” after the failed Bush II presidency! His brother was so fucking bad that America elected a fucking Black man!

I think Carly is positioning herself as a more successful and coherent Palin character….and the establishment is wary of it. And I don’t blame them.

That said, the GOP will be at least a decade more in the wilderness before they can reformulate and become nationally viable again. At present they have to wait for all the bigoted old people to just die off.

          • Cuberly

“My BROTHER kept us SAFE!!!!……..(crickets)……..” hell even right-wingers went uhhhhhhh, well, is that what we’re going with Jeby? Of course some blamed Clinton, (shrug)…..oh well.

If Hillz loses this, it’ll be by her doing. Rancid Pubis has said if the GOP lose this, they’re f’d. I agree with you, There’s more potential for a loooooooooong Dem WH occupancy than a fantasy GOP savior waltzing in via a mandate. I actually think that there’s a fair number of conservatives that see Hillz experience as a plus, and they dot like it, but they acknowledge it.

But I bet you, there’s people out there watching the clusterfuck thinking, Ben Carson meeting with Putin? Another Bush?!?!?! Ted Cruz that seems to be difficult to work with, how would he change things?

            Maybe I’m a cockeyed optimist.

          • Duane Dimitrov

The conservative movement is a movement in disarray. It’s kaput, and the reason is a simple one: the current structure of conservatism was formed in response to the civil rights/feminist/gay rights movements. It’s a product of its time, and its time has passed, and those with whom conservatism resonates are dying out. So, no more conservatism as we know it. Add in the fact that the neoliberal, “supply side” garbage economics they believe is a gospel truth is, in fact, a bunch of bs and you have a clusterfuck of an “ideology.”

That said, these zombies can shamble along for a long, long time. And cause a LOT of damage along the way.

          • RoFaWh

It was (is?) also a reaction to the hippies. You still hear the occasional Old Fart grumbling about dirty hippies.

          • Duane Dimitrov

That’s my point: it was born out of reaction to the changes that started in the 1950s, hippies et al.

This tactic was VERY successful, but the younger generation has much different proclivities. It just doesn’t resonate any longer. Sure, there are the (poor, misled) young religious fundie types…but those cannot sustain the GOP with all the new blood it needs.

          • thatotherjean

After all, facts have a well-known liberal bias.

Could you imagine the weeks-long raging on news shows and across the front pages of newspapers in every city of our country if a similar organization had called for the return of slavery … since, you know, the Bible calls for it?

And the howls of injustice against a similar organization if it called for creating a segregated society with one group on top (the Masters) and the other on bottom (the Servants) … because, you know, the Bible says that we should?

Or what about the hollers of indignity if they called for laws to keep women permanently as second-class citizens, or even barred them from high-powered jobs or high public office? … because, you know, the Bible says it should be so.

And yet when gay men and lesbians are the object of such vitriol, we hear nothing but silence from the (major) media.

    • JT

And the politicians supporting such genocidal maniacs do not get raked over the coals in the run up to a national election and forced to remove themselves from contention?

    • Derrick Johns

      @ Brian,
off topic. Your posting name makes me notice your comments when I see you mention Valdosta. I spent all my childhood summers there in the 1960s ( no air conditioning for most back then).
I’d like to see the “Azalea City” again, but it would have to be during the winter. Booze and heat don’t mix…well, not for me.

    • thatotherjean

Listen closer. The hollers of indignity are already happening, since the current “complementarian movement” among fundamentalist Christians seeks to keep women as second class, stay at home, be subordinate to your husband in all things at all times, baby making machines and sex toys. It’s the anti-women’s-liberation movement, and even while most women reject it, some brainwashed women (see Michelle Duggar) are buying into it and trying to force on others.

  • Bj Lincoln

I just keep passing this shit around, hoping to change a few minds. This is sick! Who wants a President who believes this?! If they believed this about any minority, I would be upset. That it’s about me, pisses me off.

    • Any luck? Don’t let my skepticism discourage you, but when I point things like this out people either don’t care (or rather agree but don’t want to admit it) of yell at me with a line of “we’re not all like that how dare you claim we are”.

but on a more serious note, these people better be dying off, i can’t imagine there being more conservatives in this country. Their views are becoming increasingly out of touch with the general population, and the only groups of people left are the ones that are about to drop dead, young and about to break free from their parents bullshit, and of course in general terms, the naive and the ignorant.

They preach about tolerance, and then call it “political correctness” amok when they can’t treat people with decency and respect, and resort to making snide remarks about people they don’t like, especially when they bring the bible in to the mix, and say “its not me saying these things, its just the word of god.”

translation: I’m just repeating what i’m told because i believe what ever my pastor believes and whatever the “smart”,orange complected, blonde bimbo, with the nice rack on FOX news told me to think”.

      • Blake J Butler

It just terrifies me that people like the Cruzes, and the huckabee’s of this country are basically sending young adolescent boys and girls to a life of misery or a terrible death, telling them that God won’t love them, for being gay. That kind of crap is why more people leave Christianity, especially religion in general in this country, because we can’t simply treat people with dignity and respect, if our religion thinks it tells us to only treat people well if they meet their moral standards. And that’s the tragedy, these folks only want to live in a world that lives by their standards, no compromise, their way only, ALWAYS.

Homeschooling, like religious indoctrination of the young, is child abuse. The sooner both are outlawed, the better.

        • thatotherjean

Homeschooling doesn’t need to be outlawed. There are plenty of reasons to homeschool, from children too ill, too emotionally fragile, or too advanced to attend their local public schools, to sub-par local schools for children whose parents can’t afford to send them to expensive private schools. What’s needed is much more oversight by states, with monitoring and testing, to make sure homeschooled children actually get an education comparable to children in public schools—not the fantasy-based junk that passes for education in too many religious circles.

Not to be an Internet Tough Guy (though I did grow up on the south side of Chicago, lol 😇 ) why is it always the pencil necked geeks/Barney Fife impersonators that always wants to start shit?

  • Bradford Kelly

Im so tired of this crap. At my age the animus is just boring and puerile. Im also at a point that as much as I love JMG and have been an avid reader (and almost evangelical in my support) I don’t know if I can read about how much these arseholes hate us for much longer. Joe, I just don’t know how you do it but you do and thank you for that. It needs to be published and called out.

These people are vindictive, nasty and cruel and their actions are life threatening to those younger gay people struggling with their identity and often times christian families.

Am I allowed to use the four letter “C” word? I don’t use it in polite company but I feel that its the only adjective that can be used effectively with regard to these people.

Oh – And one more thing. Fuck your religious freedom.

    • Silver Badger

Deeply in my heart of hearts I agree with you. Sometimes you have to take a break. Unfortunately, you must also know thy enemy. Also a quick route to Canada should they ever achieve the power they crave. Some advice given to me years ago was “don’t let the bastards get you down”. If you do, they win.

      • RJ Tremor

Yeah, I’ve had to do that a time or two, especially during this past summer. Life got to be too much drama to let in the rest of the world.

    • perversatile

I’m sorry you’re feeling bummed out- hope this gives you a laugh.

  • Silver Badger

I’m not too awfully sure the people and organizations listed are actually Christian. Certainly not by the standards attributed to Christ. Why do these people pretend to a religion they obviously know nothing about?

    • disqus_oCvsL5SBJH

They know more about it than you give them credit. They know that, in the end, even the apparently benign Christian religion is a celestial tyranny, that preaches weakness and submission to an unknowable, unseeable, 24/7 surveillance system that will not only punish during your life, but also punish you after your death for ETERNITY if he’s displeased with you. As the emissaries of this psychopathic attention whore, why shouldn’t Christians act like this?

  • Phil

    “Persecution” = persecution complex.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Can you just imagine a democrat going to speak at an event with people who call for the death of christians? Anyone that shows up to an event that calls for the death of American citizens isn’t fit to hold public office of any kind.

    • sherman

Fox Propaganda would be hair on fire for weeks.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

I think people in teabagastan would actually spontaneously combust. But, I can’t really see a democratic presidential candidate speaking at such an event or any event run by backward, hateful, fear mongering would be murderers.

  • Ninja0980

These three should get called out for this but they likely won’t.
Bottom line, LGBT are the last group where crap like this can be spewed about us and the media won’t call out people who attend events like this.
We still have a long, long way to go.

    • The “establishment” types (not the leadership but the more traditional Republican types) are in deep denial. They don’t see it because they don’t want to. They dismiss this bunch as the fringe even though it has taken over their party.

I did not know “top secret candidate” Jindal was still in the race…

  • I was just thinking today that if it weren’t for the internet, especially blogs and social media, we’d have no one exposing this nonsense and the blatant lies being told by this year’s presidential candidates. 24 hour news networks with barely 30 minutes of actual news in an entire day. No fact-checking and no follow-up even for the most bald-faced lies.

  • Dale

Yep. A brown man, a cuban and a fat christian PIG wishes death upon me.

Go fuck yourselves, you vile christian PIGS.

  • Hue-Man

Why do American voters and American political parties allow this to continue? This gay-hater is toxic and should be toxic to attendees.

I’m not asking the question in a vacuum; this month, the right-wing Conservative Party of Canada fired a candidate in the recent election. Here’s his fireable offense:

“The Conservatives have dumped Jagdish Grewal, a candidate in suburban
Toronto who defended therapies that attempt to turn gays straight and
who penned an editorial that referred to homosexuality as “unnatural
    behaviour” and heterosexuals as “normal.””

The Canadian Press investigated the story, hired the Punjabi translator, and broke the story. Why hasn’t American mainstream media been sensitized in a similar way?

    • KarenAtFOH

      I think I love Canada.

Come sit by me, and we can feast on poutine and Nanaimo bars.

Footnote: Some of you may be curious about the city whence arose Nanaimo bars, and be tempted to visit the place when on vacation. My advice? “Don’t bother.” A grim former coal mining town, still accurately described as “the city with no heart”.

  • Jan Wesselius

I bet that not one single moderator in the then next GOP debate will not question them why they endorse the out right killing of gays.

    • Jimmie Z

Please pardon my sense of macabre, but we are in the great big middle of Halloween. I wonder if their illustrious speakers will get down to brass tacks and describe methods of murder?

Because wouldn’t it be great to know whether it’s planned to resurrect the guillotine? — use firing squads? — lethal drug combos? — hanging?
      — gangs in dark alleys with knives? — stoning?

Where is Perversatile when I need him?

  • Ore Carmi

I’d say the focus on persecution is ironic, but this is way too serious an issue for a word that light.

  • How to ruin your political hopes in one easy step, attend a xtian hate-fest.
    Poof be gone!

    • LonelyLiberal

Would that were so, but unfortunately, it plays well in some regions and doesn’t harm you in those regions’ politics.

      • In some regions it makes the political career. But those areas are shrinking in power, as more and more voters see this for what it is, hate.

  • David Kerlick

Did they bring the white hoods?

  • Dave_in_PDX

Even the poor persecuted Aaron and Melissa Klein will be making an appearance. A complete hate fest!

A ‘death to gays’ Pastor, huh?

I wonder what perverted sexual behavior he is hiding from the public.
Since he is in the church, it is a pretty easy guess.

The test – How to tell if your religious liberty is being repressed:
    1. My religious liberty is at risk because:
    A) I am not allowed to go to a religious service of my own choosing.
    B) Others are allowed to go to religious services of their own choosing.

    3. My religious liberty is at risk because:
    A) I am being forced to use birth control.
    B) I am unable to force others to not use birth control.

    4. My religious liberty is at risk because:

    A) I am not allowed to pray privately.
    B) I am not allowed to force others to pray the prayers of my faith publicly.

    5. My religious liberty is at risk because:
    A) Being a member of my faith means that I can be bullied without legal recourse.

    B) I am no longer allowed to use my faith to bully gay kids with impunity.

    The rest are here:

Most of those folks are irrelevant except Ted Cruz, we really need to make sure he does not become their nominee. He’s the most radical frontrunner. I’m not, and I think most aren’t, too concerned what Bobby Jindal of Mike Huckabee have to say about anything, but Cruz is bad news.

How f#cking stupid, vile and disgusting is so called Pastor Swanson and the GOP a$$holes who will speak, all claiming to follow a man who taught to love people to your neighbor AND your enemies. A bunch of hypocrites taking after Adolph Hitler and not Jesu, they are probably anti-Semitic also.

He is pounding on what it says in the Bible but yet the Bible was written over 1500 years and no one even knows who the authors were. He must have missed reading the part that says Jesus loves us all the same.
