Democratic Rep. Don Beyer Wins “Politicians Vs Press” National Press Club Spelling Bee [VIDEO]

Some welcome lightheartedness on Capitol Hill:

Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) outlasted a team of journalists Wednesday night to win the National Press Club’s “Politicians vs. Press” spelling bee. The event, a fundraiser for the National Press Club Journalism Institute, pitted a team of seven journalists against seven lawmakers. Helping to judge the competition were 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champions Vanya Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam, who were in charge of ringing loud bells after every misspelled word. The rest of the team of lawmakers were not as successful as Beyer, however; the press out-spelled them 67 to 32. The team of lawmakers also included Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), Brad Ashford (D-Neb.), Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) and Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.), the reigning 2013 champion.

Watch the below recap of Beyer’s winning words.
