TRAILER: Hail, Caesar!

USA Today recaps the trailer for coming Coen Brothers film:

How do you get George Clooney as a bumbling actor, Scarlett Johansson in a mermaid costume, Channing Tatum dancing in a sailor outfit and Tilda Swinton all in one movie? You call the Coen Brothers, that’s how. The first trailer for their new film, Hail Caesar!, hit the Internet on Friday and it’s a treat almost as good as the weekend itself. The movie takes place in good old Old Hollywood, and centers around a major star (George Clooney, obviously) being kidnapped by a group called “The Future.” So very Coen. Even just the short two-and-a-half minutes of the trailer smacks of their distinct visual style and humor. Including everything mentioned above it also has Jonah Hill, Josh Brolin, Frances McDormand and Ralph Fiennes. Suffice to say we are excited.

    Looks fun 😀

for those that need an actual picture:

      mmm mmm mmm

  • bkmn

I would love to ask the Coen brothers what influence Mel Brooks had on them.

    • Gindy51

From the looks of all they do, a fuck ton.

    • With this one? I think the answer is all the influence.

  • Cuberly

Clooney is such a great fit with the Coen Bros. Brother Where Art Thou is on HBO Now, watched it again a few days ago. Man, such a great movie. Clooney is so freakin good in it.

    • canoebum

Have you seen “Intolerable Cruelty”? One of my favorites.

      • Megrim Twist

One of my faves also. I get chills just thinking about it.

      • Cuberly

        I haven’t, I’ll give it a looksee. Thanks.

      • Mickey Bitsko

Geoffrey Rush is a riot in that one.

  • clay

Plus, Josh Brolin in a confessional and Alden Ehrenriech as a pouty cowboy (ala Montgomery Cliff and Sal Mineo).

    • Gustav2

Yes, we Eldergays chuckled at the Sal Mineo

  • Octavio

Anything with tap dancing in it. Have to see it. 🙂

  • Macbill

    I can’t wait!!!

  • Cuberly

OT: Sorry…..Paul Ryan for Speaker? Bzzzzzzzzzzzzt! WRONG!

Ryan has come out, and yet again, said….NO!

    • Octavio

Loved the pundits this morning claiming he said “No!” faster than anyone could ask the question. It’s all smoke and mirrors, but Ryan seems much less menacing than any of the die hard teabaggers who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time (Gohmert). 🙂

      • Cuberly

Issa sure is slithering around, attempting to not look like the sad impotent criminal he is. He really wants to be considered for the position. I bet the giggles behind his back, that other members can’t stifle, are rather priceless.

        • BobSF_94117

I expect they’re afraid of him.

          • Cuberly

He is Slitherin material isn’t he.

      • BearEyes

Ryan is already doing a lot of damage on the ways and means cmte. He’s smarmy enough to do it too. I don’t trust him.

      • ElJiffy

O ye infernal gods, please let Louie Gomer be Speaker! I sacrifice a goat.

      • Piet

Ryan’s a threat. Nothing un-menacing about him. Just because he used to be a paperboy that doesn’t make him a nice guy, and that aw-shucks grin he pastes on is pure B-movie acting. Heaven help us if he was elected Speaker.

        • Octavio

That’s why I prefaced everything with, “it’s all smoke and mirrors” ’cause he is a definite threat to intelligence and progress.

          • Piet

Oh, yes. And as accomplished a liar as any Republican could hope to be. He’s lived his entire life on the government’s dime, but he’s a self-made man who believes the government shouldn’t be supporting lazy do-nothings. Grrr.

    • Gustav2

Last I heard the Teavangelicals are taking the long weekend to dry their tears and grow a pair. Or at least put their Truck Nutz in their pants.

      • Cuberly

Yeah I guess they had a 90 min meeting this morning and it resulted in nada.

I swear, if this same predicament happened with Pelosi at the helm, she’d have had the deserters pelts hanging from her office door before the meeting even started.

        • Gustav2

          …because she has ovaries.

          • Cuberly

            Damn right she does…lol….

    • Judas Peckerwood

Ryan is clueless and power-hungry, but not THAT clueless and power-hungry.

  • John P.

They even threw in a little Ester Williams. Channing Tatum is a good choice for a Gene Kelly type. Looks like great fun.

    • Gustav2

Just because my TV starts up on TCM I may have to go to a theater to watch this…and pay!

  • Robincho

You had me at Channing Tatum dancing in a sailor suit…

  • Buck Starr

“Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” is one of my favorite movies…Can’t wait to see this one! Looks terrific!

    • Squeeeee!
I so agree with Oh Brother and this looks like it’s gonna be a fun one too!

    • grindstone

Mine, too. And Fargo, of all things. Basically, I’m the Coen Brothers’ bitch.

  • vstill

They don’t make bad movies, ever! Love anything the Coen Brothers produce, write or direct!

  • Me like…great mix of quirky self deprecating black comedy, with a unique ensemble.

I’m wondering if Channing Tatum can actually act? I’m waiting to be impressed, given all the attention he usually gets.

  • Gustav2

Was that “Ocean’s 11” in the last scene of the clip?

  • bdsmjack

Clooney in gladiator drag? I’m there.

  • Gindy51

  • canoebum

    I am so in!

    • HZ81

      Ha, my exact reply above.

I was sold at Channing Tatum in a sailor uniform, but that Aiden guy and Tilda? Extra sold.

      Looks fun all around.

  • Bill T.

    We have a bingo!

  • HZ81

    I am so in.

  • American Patriot ™

Remember when women used to swoon over George Clooney ? He’s 54 years old, but looks 64.

    • Kay

I am a 30 year old, cis female and I still swoon. I think many gay men and heterosexual women have different views on what constitutes a hot male.

  • Piet

Gotta tell my brother. He’s the one introduced me to Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and I know he’ll love this one.

  • Joe in PA

that cast could be reading the phone book…holy cow what a line up. And speaking of Frances McDormand…anyone see Olive Kitteridge?

  • Michael Rush

This looks like fun , I enjoyed many of their movies but there were a couple i forgot as soon as they ended .

  • WTHella

    I love that time period.

  • Bj Lincoln

This looks like something I would go see. I love the time period. The clothes and cars are beautiful. What a cast!

  • Raising_Rlyeh

This coming year looks pretty good for movies. This along with pride and prejudice and zombies looks good.

  • Circle Thomas

February release date = Bad picture

    See also: Monument Men

    • JCF

Um, see re “The Silence of the Lambs” (i.e., not always!).

      • Circle Thomas

That was 24 years ago. For the last decade, at least, films with Oscar buzz that have failed to live up to the hype have seen their release dates pushed well back into the following year.

        • Halloween_Jack

The problem with that is that it’s been gamed so much that the Oscar-bait season gets crammed with these dull, deadly-earnest pictures that nobody really wants to see, especially as the eventual nominees will get put back into theaters anyway. So February is wide open for a picture to stand out when it might not amidst the onslaught of Brave Person Bravely Battles [Random Disease] or Pretty Actor in Unglamorous Makeup.

    • See also Every Coen Brothers Movie Ever.

Their worst work is head and shoulder above 95% of everything released.

  • Macbill

I bet they had a blast making this.

  • Dagoril

You had me at mentioning Tilda Swinton. She’s like my own personal Judy Garland hehe. Has she been in anything that hasn’t been amazing? I think not.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh yes, this is going to Fun, Fun, Fun!!!

  • ColdDesert

George Clooney as a better Charlton Heston.

  • Celloman G

    Frances McDormand. Enough said.

  • Give it more awe, John.

  • What is the Coen’s worst film?

The Hudsucker Proxy:” love it: mini-classic.
Burn After Reading: still pretty damn good.
Intolerable Cruelty: a little thin but what a hoot.

C’mon guys, even their lightest stuff is always worth seeing. the only thing missing from this is John Goodman and maybe they’ll slip him in uncredited.

    • Halloween_Jack

I’d swear that I saw Goodman mentioned in connection with this film.

  • DonnaLee

I can not wait for this movie! This looks amazing!

  • FilmNut35

This looks like a hoot. I also can’t get past Universal Pictures releasing a film shot on the Warner lot with Eddie Mannix who was an MGM exec. Ah, those wacky Coens.
