The “Kissing Marine” Couple Has Gotten Married

NOTE: An important correction is below.

The US Marine whose welcome home kiss from his boyfriend rocketed around the world in 2012 has gotten married. Gay Star News reports:

The couple whose photo quickly became a symbol of the post-Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era in the US got married last weekend in Honeoye Falls, New York. Back in February 2012, Marine Sergeant Brandon Morgan returned from a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. He jumped into the arms of his strapping boyfriend Dalan Wells at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Their homecoming kiss was captured by their friend, Dave Lewis, who later posted it on a Facebook page titled Gay Marines. Morgan popped the question to Wells in 2013, just a year after a picture of their romantic reunion took social media by storm. They have been together since 2008.

(Tipped by JMG reader David)

IMPORTANT CORRECTION: JMG reader Kyle writes to point out that the above-linked story is incorrect. Sgt. Morgan and Mr. Wells actually go married this week two years ago and Kyle was in the wedding party. It’s not clear why Gay Star News, which is usually quite reliable, is reporting that the wedding just happened. I’m going to leave this post up nevertheless because it’s still a sweet story and because you can all go look at Kyle’s photos from the 2013 wedding. Kyle adds that Sgt. Morgan has just re-upped with the USMC.

  • marycigarettes

its a great photo..a great moment

    • Robincho

I think it’s on par with the sailor grabbing the nurse in Times Square on V-E Day…

      • bambinoitaliano

It does marked a significant time in our history more so than the Time Square pic because of the political milestone being made on the advancement of human right in US.

      • marycigarettes

        it totally is

      • Reality.Bites

And this time the couple actually know each other and were (are) a couple.

      • JCF

Nah, THIS is the “Sailor Kiss” that *I* will always love!

        • Robincho

Very nice also, this one. But my Fave-O-Meter™ is still sticking
with the Marines… (it must be a dick thing)

          • JCF

NB: I wasn’t comparing the Sailor Grrls to the Leaping Marine, but to the totally harrass-y VJ Day sailor *grab*.

        • Glen

Much better. More dignified. Less ‘Daddy! You’re home! ‘

    • Bill_Perdue

      Sweet, courageous, powerful.

      • Reality.Bites

We’re supposed to believe that you support anything about a volunteer American soldier? Bullshit.

        • Bill_Perdue

Leftists support an end to US/Canadian/NATO wars of aggression. Rightwing banksters like you are perfectly willing for the killing go on to protect your wealth.

  • Dr X

And shortly thereafter, Kevin McCarthy’s marital infidelity was revealed. Obviously, same-sex marriage caused him to cheat on his wife.

    • We’re helpful that way.

    • Cuberly

      Merry Christmas!….oh..wait…

  • AtticusP

Mazel tov! Here’s wishing them many happy years together!!

  • Robincho

Not sure how Honeoye is pronounced, but I like to think it would be “Honey, oh yeah!”

    • John30013

It’s “honey-oy” (like in “oy vey”).. Honeyoye Falls is a suburb of Rochester (where I went to college).

      But I like your pronunciation!

  • Congrats to the married couple. Not long ago he wouldn’t have been able to serve openly in the military or get married….now he can do both!!!! Great progress.

    • It’s all happened in a landslide moment in terms of social change. What a miracle age we are living in.

  • BearEyes

    Mazel Tov, guys!

  • Harley

I wanna see the honeymoon pics. Preferably the night ones.

    • Ed Burrow

here u go….it’s a night pic. the dirty one.

      • Reality.Bites

I’ve been staring at this photo for a good ten minutes now.

And I still can’t tell if he’s cut.

      • Lumpy Gaga

        NSFW warning, PLEASE!!!!!!!

      • GC

Next time remember to take off the lenscap.

      • I still giggle over a cartoon in Punch back in the 1970s which had exactly this same picture, with the caption
Cut that out! We’re supposed to be hibernating!

  • Reality.Bites

Together since 2008, engaged since 2013… they sure don’t rush into anything!

Somewhat related, a federal judge in Georgia formally struck down the state’s marriage ban yesterday. Marriages have been taking place since the Supreme Court ruling, but this officially makes Georgia’s ban unconstitutional. This is the resolution of a case filed in April 2014 by several couples. I assume the state has no intention of appealing, but who knows.

    • fuow

In Georgia, it’s quite possible they’ll appeal.

      • Gene

ah…but the court ruled that it was the law, which makes any appeal a dead letter. (just happened two days ago)

        • Reality.Bites

Yes, I don’t think fuow was suggesting an appeal had any chance of success, merely that they might throw taxpayer money away.

However when the SCOTUS ruling came down the state AG said:

“Today the Supreme Court of the United States ruled the Constitution requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out of state. It does not permit bans on same-sex marriage. In our system of government, the Supreme Court bears the ultimate responsibility for determining the constitutionality of our laws. Once the Supreme Court has ruled, its Order is the law of the land. As such, Georgia will follow the law and adhere to the ruling of the Court.”

So I’m guessing they won’t appeal. Indeed, we don’t even know if they defended the ban at the district level (depending on when the hearing was) or if they withdrew their defence afterwards.

    • Cousin Bleh

This is probably a tad judgmental, but I appreciate that they didn’t rush into marriage. You can tell this couple is in it for the long haul.

I already know 4 gay couples who divorced this year, like legit divorced. One of the guys did not know he had to hire a lawyer and shell out big bucks to divorce because he legally married his boyfriend-of-the-moment. Another one of his friends had to sit him down and explain it to him. She ain’t the sharpest, but she sure is pretty.

      • Chucktech

I was gonna say, it must have been the pretty one who needed the Dutch Uncle talk…

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Congrats to these two very beautiful men. I wish them much happiness and joy.

  • Webslinger

Here’s the great gay paradox; homophobia is best tackled by greater gay visibility, and gay visibility is held back because of homophobia.

This is grounded in a great misconception; that homosexuality is all about sex, while heterosexuality is all about love.”

    • Todd20036

It’s kind of like the Westboro Church actually helping move along gay rights by peeling away the Christians’ pretty words and exposing how the right really felt.

Beautiful photo, but way too much clothing.

      • Silver Badger

We eagerly await the honeymoon video’s!

    • GayOldLady

I know a couple that married in early July. They have lived together for 65 years, since the age of 18. Now that’s definitely Love & Love.

  • Webslinger

    • Harley

I can tell who the daddy is now.

      • MickinDetroit

…because it wasn’t obvious from the original pic?

        • Octavio

What? You don’t think they both pitch and catch? LOL!

          • Brandon Morgan

            Oh you guys…. lolzz..

    • Gene

The actual wedding pics are lovely ( Episcopal church wedding…simple, but classy..and the old historic church they did it in is very beautiful..understated…class acts all around)

    • Chucktech

What a stunning couple! Best wishes for a long and happy life together!

    • TexPlant

ahhhh gay love is so sweet! Suck it One Million Moms!!

  • canoebum

Congratulations! I wish you may happy years. (Where they were married, Honeoye Falls, NY, is very much like the town where I live in Upstate New York).

  • fuow

    Wonderful news on a Friday.

  • Jersey

I’m going to be sad when Obama leaves office. Hands down the best president in my lifetime so far. Congrats the the happy couple.

    • GC

If only Obama weren’t supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership and certain other policies… but he’s far, far better than any Repuglican president would have been!!

(Don’t blame me if you-know-who shows up to say otherwise!)

Many of us have said this before: we need to help like-minded people register and vote, to keep the Rethuglicans out of the White House. The Supreme Court can do lasting good or lasting damage; we simply can’t afford having a few more Thomases and Scalias nominated to the bench. (And other federal judgeships matter as well.)

      • skeptical_inquirer

Yeah, I totally side eye the TPP but I shiver with terror at the thought of either McCain (and if he stroked out, Palin) or Rmoney being in office.

        • B Snow

Yep. I made the comment after the 2008 election that everyone was still fascinated with Sarah Palin. “Like a car wreck you can’t look away from.” My sister replied, “And we were almost in that car.”

    • Chucktech

I’m looking forward to reading his memoirs. I’m hoping he pulls no punches.

  • Irishsupporter

I wish them nothing but the best for their lives together!!

(Now if I could get a boyfriend like that!)

  • DaddyRay

  • Lumpy Gaga

[makes sound like I just saw a kitty pic]

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    that is all. 🙂

  • billbear1961

    Beautiful–in so many ways!

    Happy Second Anniversary!

  • Octavio

Love this photo and story. It makes me all happy inside. Thanks, Joe. 🙂

  • jmax

I love a man in uniform. Or out of uniform, for that matter.

  • Glen

I found this picture to be SO embarrassing, and even damaging. It really made me cringe.

Not the passionate kissing. But the pose.

    • Jersey

You think that’s embarrassing, don’t look in my window when I’m riding my cowboy bouncing up and down squeeling…never mind.

      • William

That is so awful, looking through a window. Is the scene available on video?

    • Bob Kellerman

      — it happens that the shorter one is the more demonstrative, so instead of bending Dalan’s head down for an awkward kiss, he jumped up and planted one on his lips.
Straight people do this all the time

  • carlo

sam day i have a guy for me

  • Brian Moore

    YAY! 😀

  • Dalan

Thanks for all the nice comments everybody. We did get married two years ago but have not had the real wedding yet with all our family and friends. That might be in the next two years when we get out of Louisiana and move to San Diego. Also we were not going out in 2008! Brandon was only 21 and we had met several times but did not start dating till he was on his last deployment to Afghanistan.
Thanks again and please checkout my art at if you are interested.

    • Your pictures are beautiful, Dalan! All best wishes to you both.

  • Bob Kellerman

I wasn’t at the nuptuals, 2 years ago, but I consider both of them to be good friends. They are VERY happy, and do NOT share intimate details (sorry). Next year Brandon will be a Marine Drill Instructor ( a very coveted posting ) and Dalan will continue to be a wonderful painter, and supportive husband.

    • JCF

      Thanks for this, BobK!
