OREGON: Armed Teabaggers Protest Obama’s Arrival To Console Families Of Mass Shooting Victims [VIDEO]

Via the Associated Press:

Holding signs saying the president was not welcome, more than 200 gun-rights activists protested Barack Obama’s visit on Friday to Oregon to meet with the families of victims of last week’s campus killings. The protesters stood outside Roseburg airport as Obama left a helicopter and got into a limousine that whisked him away for the private conversations at a high school. The protesters were angry about Obama’s calls for gun restrictions in the wake of the shooting rampage that killed eight students and a teacher at Umpqua Community College. Some of the protesters carried holstered handguns. Others had signs saying Obama was not welcome. “By coming here, Obama is going to politicize a tragedy by saying that you have to have gun control,” George Starr said as he held a small American flag.

Speaking of the need for better mental healthcare…

    • Herald

Yes, this degree of stupid, idiocy, and craziness (to put it politely) is dangerous. Besides that it BURNS!

      • Robincho

Speaking of burns, if you want serious dumbfuckery, go to Burns, Oregon
(seat of Haney County). And then leave immediately. Beaverstaters of the sentient variety tend broadly to gravitate to the west and north of Oregon —
the very area, ironically, that will be taken out entirely by the Cascadia Sub-
duction Zone, whenever THAT bitch decides to lose her shit…

I’d like to think of the Pacific Northwest as being all Song of the Loon and
Sacagawea-y… but as we can see here all too readily, idiocy admits of neither metes nor bounds…

        • PaulDouglas1

I think Harney county and eastern Oregon in general is far less rabid than SW Oregon. And I used to live there.

        • Acronym Jim

On the other hand, Burns is close to the fascinating Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Fortunately, Harney County, while being one of the biggest counties in Oregon, it’s also one of the least populated.

      • StSean

No no. These people are monsters.

        • Herald

I was being polite, less polite is they are worse than monsters.

        • RB118

Not to be contrary but even monsters have some degree of comprehension. You might have to get them stoned first but hell that’s legal here.

The objectives of mass media shifted during the days of Nixon – concentrating on the dark side of America. There’s a positive benefit for those who would be our masters because Americans are so much easier to manage when we’re afraid of each other. It’s right out the “divide and conquer” playbook.

For several decades, there has been a brain drain from rural areas. All of the smart kids leave to attend college and find jobs in heavily populated areas (big cities and the suburbs around them). There are almost no jobs for smart people in these rural areas. After several generations of this, you wind up with totally clueless people like these protesters.

      • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

Any functioning brains left out there in the boonies are thoroughly pickled in booze and meth.

      • PaulDouglas1

Which I think has been verified as a national trend. Educated people tend to move to areas where other educated people live and have been doing so for the past 50 years. There has been a distinct sorting process going on that has made many rurally oriented states caustically conservative and reactionary.
Kind of a positive feedback loop, and I am skeptical it can be reversed.

  • MattM

Let’s hope the secret service agents watch these “well-armed patriots” like hawks.

Being protested by teabagger gun nuts should be considered an honor. It shows that Obama’s on the right track.

The twice elected President of the USA comes to your city to offer condolences for your friends and family members that were massacred in yet ANOTHER mass shooting and you protest him while carrying guns……..Tell me again who’s turning this devastating tragedy into a political shitshow???

There is absolutely nothing Obama can do that the haters will approve of. NOTHING! He could cure all the world’s ills and provide every American with a good paying job and they would still hate him.

      • Schlukitz

        You’re absolutely right.

What we are seeing here, is the true face of racism.

        Unabashed. Unashamed. And unapologetic.

      • Jeff D

Obama gives everyone a great paying full time job.
Fox News headline will be — Obama Enslaves Americans with Forced Labor.

        • charemor

For all of you, Octoberfurst, Schlukitz and Jeff D, as an old fart growing up in the south during the 40s and 50s with all of the hate, prejudice and discrimination, I was so thrilled when President Obama was first elected and thought that perhaps we were finally getting beyond all of this. Sadly, it has only seemed to escalate from there.

      • Kissmagrits

Much like my own father who hated FDR to his dying day. Despite dad’s getting bailed out by the CCC and WPA programs after the 1929 meltdown, dad still insisted Roosevelt was a socialist traitor.

On behalf of those of us in Oregon who are not raging assholes, I apologize for these people and their behavior.

    • Herald

My guess is that none of them are residents of that county, could I be right?

      • Rick

Oh no, they could be from there. Totally possible. As others have noted, Portland is a bit of a liberal ‘island’ here in Oregon. Also, I mentioned last week after this happened: we have very liberal gun laws here.

        • Soren456

My brief experience in Oregon would suggest that the whole Willamette Valley—Portland south to Eugene—ought to be included.

          • Octavio

          • Crimminy

Definitely not my experience. A few years ago, I spent 6 months living a couple of miles south of Portland. Based on the election signs/results, and my encounters with the locals, I would say that it was at least as right-wing as the outer Atlanta suburbs. Portland and Eugene are both tiny liberal islands.

          • Piernudo15

A few years ago my cousin, who is Latina, got a job as a reporter for the newspaper in Salem, Oregon. She said she often encountered blatant racism toward her and feared for her safety after meeting some of the hateful loons there. She left within a year.

So, it’s completely fair for me to say in response.

i’m done, and been for a while, also, too. i served in the military. my family always had guns and military training. etc. i’m one of those raised in the country shoot your dinner with your own gun types.

but, the 2nd amd has TWO parts. one is yes, have a gun. the other is well regulated.

you want a gun? put on a uniform, beeyotch. serve, with officers telling you what to do all day, and running around for various reasons in shitty places. back in the day militia meant something. aren’t we all about “originalism?” mad max guy made a movie about it. oh, and the gun you get? i nice, original musket. have fun with that.

i own no projectile weapons at this point. i’m having an ironic star trek moment right now with my lover, who has only discovered it recently. in the Federation, murder by gun death is a horrible, shocking tragedy and a sign of a real problem. b/c it never happens. they kill their enemies, but senseless gun death? it’s so irregular and unusual they made a whole episode about it. (DS9 S7 E13) we’re thinking about how nice it would be to live in the Federation.

      • SoCalVet

        I like it. 🙂

  • Bill T.

Half of those protesters will be dead or injured within a year from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

I had a conversation with the husband about this racism last night. I expected a racist reaction in response to Obama’s election, but I guess that I initially expected it to diminish over the years, especially over the course of two terms. That being said, it seems to have gotten uglier, more overt.

Gun in a holster and hands in his pockets…. Yeah, he is shining example of a gun owner who will be ready to be a good guy when a bad guy shoots him.

    • My mother’s 87 year old husband claims that he keeps guns in the house “to protect his family”…so if a bad guy breaks in during the night you’re going to quickly tear off your c-pap, pull your over-weight bulk out of bed, find your glasses, go to where ever it is that you keep your gun (safety first!) then start that protecting?
Some people just never think things through.

      • lattebud

My sister lives in a semi rural area and also has a gun for protection. But, her philosophy is to put it in the air in the direction of no homes and fire off 2 rounds. The first round of a shotgun will wake people up and the second round will a) have people call the police and b) scare any intruders away. In 26 years, she hasn’t had to use it once. But, about once a year, she hears the sound of 2 shot gun shots from a neighbor and knows help is needed.

  • lattebud

I have a new reality show concept. One of these folks like this must be locked in a room with spouse, partner, children, mother, father, or another relative of a victim of gun violence, sit is silence while the person describes the victim, circumstances, etc., and then attempt to convince them that more guns are needed. Each person will take a lie detector test before and after to determine if their position on gun acquisition and possession has changed.

Well, I guess when you stand up in front of the cameras and declare that this is an issue that needs to be “politicized” people will take your word for it and well, politicize the issue. That it wasn’t the kind of response that Obama was looking for is besides the point.

Gotta love the First Amendment. At least we all still have that for the time being.

  • Kissmagrits

I live in Oregon and I’m deeply embarrassed by this jingoistic, gun-toting collection of Tea Party bigots. I realize that while they’re not really a majority, they’d like us to think they are – somewhat reminiscent of the Moral Majority in the ’70s.

But, last week right after the shooting, I was particularly distressed by the posturing Douglas County sheriff – the crew-cut wearing hardass whose name I refuse to mention lest I give him more media attention.

No good deed goes unpunished. These are the very people why we need stronger gun safety laws in place nationwide. If only some of the nuts protesting had even considered attending a community college. It just goes to show that you can dress up like a Yankee Doodle but have no concept of “patriotism”

Where are all the signs demanding better, more affordable and accessible mental healthcare? I thought that was the “real” problem.

Instead, all I see is a bunch of nuts who showed up fully armed at an event meant to commemorate victims of a mass shooting.

Look at these people. It’s all unbearably depressing. All of it. God save the Republic. Somebody needs to 🙁
