White House: Not Ready To Endorse Equality Act
UPDATE: Video Added To Post

According to Washington Blade reporter Chris Johnson, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest today said that President Obama isn’t prepared to endorse the Equality Act, which would essentially grant LGBT Americans the same federal protections enjoyed by Christians since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. How very disappointing. Nobody really expects the Equality Act to get any traction in the current Congress and it probably won’t in the next one either. But still. I expect we’ll see some strong pushback on this right away.

  • Judas Peckerwood

    Still evolving, no doubt.

    • GreatLakeSailor

waiting for the polls to shift…

  • Get out and vote people! The president and his judicial nominees can only do so much. We need senators and other congress-critters too. Even governors, state reps, mayors and assemblyfolk to help implement non-discrimination where you live.

If you don’t care enough to vote for people who support you, why should they support us?

    • jomicur

Yes, the president can only do so much. But one of the things he can do is support legislation. THE LGBT community overwhelmingly supported Obama. Why isn’t he supporting us in return on this?

      • His symbolic support , especially since he’s in his lame duck year seems like a no-brainer, I agree. But it has no chance of passing Congress, regardless. We need to give him a Congress that gives a shit about us. Voting is the only way.

I know too many LGBT folk who only vote on presidential election years. Save some of your anger for them too. They are part of the reason we have such a shitty Congress. .

I suspect the coming election is part of the reason, and we’ll find out more as his inner circle leaks the reasons. Maybe his inner circle thinksit’s a shitty bill and needs more work? who knows?

        • pickypecker

I’m guessing the legislation itself has been either gutted so badly or warped beyond recognition or practical use.

          • TampaDink

I’m hoping that is the case, otherwise, this is extremely disappointing.

          • jomicur

            Disappointing but unsurprising.

    • Steven B

We aren’t talking about passage of ENDA. We are talking about endorsing ENDA. That doesn’t require a sympathetic Congress or Senate.

      • Toasterlad

        RIGHT.

      • That Guy

IIRC he supports ENDA. But ENDA is ‘just’ employment non-discrimination. The Equality Act encompasses employment, housing, and public accommodations, among others.

        • Bill_Perdue

Obama stopped the passage of ENDA in it tracks in 2009 and 2010.

          • That Guy

            [citation needed]

          • Bill_Perdue

It’s self evident now and it was at the time.

It’s the ENDA, stupid“The truth is marching on as President Obama’s declining poll numbers are at the root of his staff’s impatience with LGBT commentators. As a community activist on the frontlines of the equality fight, I find the Obama administration takes a more tactical approach to strategic social issues. My advice to the administration, as a voter and as one of the unsatisfied members of the LGBT blogosphere, is “It’s ENDA Stupid.”http://www.bilerico.com/2010/08/its_the_enda_stupid.php

        • Steven B

Point made and taken. I didn’t intend to limit my comment to ENDA but I guess it does come across that way.

          • Bill_Perdue

ENDA was the only game in town in 2009-10.

      • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

The difference between ENDA, which was a stand-alone bill, and the Equality Act is that the latter would change existing civil rights legislation, thereby giving the Republicans an opportunity to weaken it.

  • pj

what? you mean all this kumbaya about ssm and the rest was just talk?

    • TampaDink

No. We got SSM. It is just the right to be denied employment, be fired & denied housing that is still a matter under consideration.

      • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

Which is why this whole thing was done ass-backwards (at least as far as LGBTs who don’t live & work in the states that already have protections – CA, MA, WA, OR, VT, etc.). For people in states like Ohio, Indiana & Kentucky, it can now be ‘Congratulations on your marriage, here’s your pink slip’, and that’s perfectly legal.

        • TampaDink

Something has to change to fix this hole in our human rights but I don’t see that happening with a republican president.

  • Lee

“But Bernie supported this in 1916!! FEEL THE BERN!!” In 3…2…1…

    • Judas Peckerwood

      Well, THAT was certainly gratuitous.

      • Mark

small number of comments and a private profile – figures….

        • Circ09

But still funny. And kinda deserving. I do like me some Bernie though.

          • Mark

I’m afraid my ability to recognize sarcasm / snark is at an all time low these days with all that is going on this screwed up country. It think perhaps it’s time I take a break from all of this and head up in to the mountains…

        • Lee

82 comments and 270 up votes is perfectly fine for a person who isn’t obsessed with commenting on blogs. I’m set to pvt because I comment on porn and my niece’s blog…two very different audiences.

          • Bluto

            I should hope so.

          • Mark

            Whatever.

  • Octavio

Well, that sucks. And just when I was almost ready to recognize that blacks and people of color should be full citizens of the USA, too. No reason to follow the crowd now. Bidness as usual.

  • billbear1961

    WHY?

What possible justification can there be for not supporting it?!

    • Clive Johnson

I’m baffled on this one too.

    • safari2bongaloo

Transgender issues? The men in the bathroom scare-tactic is pretty strong.

      • StraightGrandmother

I bet you are right, it is the transgender inclusion with protections, that is why it is still under review.

        That must be it.
It is disappointing coming from O, very disappointing.

I would feel much more outrage if it had a snowballs chance of passing. O knows better too, he has transgender people in his administration.

        • Gene

BINGO. StrightGrandmother. its the Transgender inclusion portion. it not that, he would support it. not impressed…I understand the politics of it, but..still, disappointed and not impressed.

          • Bill_Perdue

          • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

LOL. Okay, Bill. This time you win.

        • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

It seems to be fear of what the Republicans could do to the Civil Rights Act if it gets opened up. (from what I’ve read so far)

      • Ramona Love

I knew the second the guy in the video said “housing” that it’s about trans people.

they want to throw trans people under the bus again when it’s clear that shit didn’t work last time. they won’t pass a bill just because you remove the T from LGBT but it will put a lot of us in harm’s way as people take it as a sign that it’s still okay to discriminate against us.

        • Paul

The reason the previous bill failed was because of its poor wording and only covering employment.

The exclusion of the “Ts” was only a small part of the reason for its failure.

    • LovesIrony

and wtf with that he still supports the “idea of lgbt non-discrimination protections” he supports the idea but not the act? please what the fuck?

      • MBear

Er well ya know: cant haz support “homosexual acts”.
OMG this nation is crazy and stupid and scary

        • MBear

The sad is that we can never finish this discussion:

          – Which ‘acts’? Do you mean just sex?
          – How do you know someone is having sex?
          – Would you be okay with legal rights for all LGBT Americans if they don’t have sex?
          – How would you police if they were having sex?
          – Can you describe in detail what kind of sex you approve of?
          – Who the fuck do you think you are to tell other people what they can/cannot do in their homes?

    • David L. Caster

Well, to give the executive branch the benefit of the doubt, maybe it is because the law is flawed in some way that is in fact to our disadvantage and contains too many carve-outs for religion.

      Perhaps that’s wishful thinking.

    • Lee

“It’s just simply that this particular piece of legislation the way that it’s written would have a significant impact across a broad set of policies, and so the administration wants to take a careful look to make sure that we understand the broad impact that this particular piece of legislation would have,” Earnest said. “But this is a review that’s ongoing and we’ll keep you posted.”

“The White House’s delay in endorsing the Equality Act is consistent with the hesitation seen from major non-LGBT civil rights groups on the bill. The Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People have to yet to endorse the bill. LCCHR has expressed concern about opening up the Civil Rights Act to amendments in Congress out of fear that could weaken the entire law. “

      • Xuuths

From the “I have mine so fuck you” school of thought on equality.

        • BobSF_94117

The NAACP has been a strong supporter for years. It’s probably more a case of not wanting the GOP to dilute the Civil Rights Act for everyone. You know they want to.

      • Bj Lincoln

What is so fucking hard about adding LGBT people to the list?! I don’t give a rats ass what a bunch of extremist religious zealots feel about it! The NAACP has been on our side for a long time and stand to lose NOTHING. The only lose will be the christians will have to keep their bigotry to themselves.

    • ErikDC

My guess is that it involves opening the 1964 Civil Rights Act up for amendment. The aim of the Equality Act may be simply to add LGBT people to the Civil Rights Act, but you could end up with an amendment that guts it or adds unsavory wording during the legislative process. Amending the Civil Rights Act would allow other members to propose their own amendments and there is a chance you could get something truly unfortunate.

But I could be wrong. I don’t know enough about the legislation.

      • stevenj

I think you’ve made a good guess. I don’t know that much about the legislation either but the accommodations section of the Civil Rights Act could be challenged by the bigots with LGBT proposed to be added.

      • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

It’s a reasonable guess. If that were the case, though, you would think that the President could endorse it. If ever the Civil Rights Act came back gutted, he would veto it. It would paint the Republicans in a really bad light.

    • OMG billbear, people’s marriage licenses can be used to throw them out of their jobs and homes. OMG!

Cmon Wise Bears! Wake up, Mr President!

  • Oscarlating Wildely

Could try to out left, saying it doesn’t go far enough. Chicken shit response but so is the lack of explanation or backing it in any way.

  • BearEyes

Ug – now we need to wait for evolution again? Let’s get Biden to make another “gaffe”

  • LovesIrony

boo, why aren’t they on board?

    • BearEyes

Good question. What’s the calculus here?

    • jomicur

      Je$u$.

  • whabbear

Unbelievable. It’s like the old timid Obama. WTF?

  • Oscarlating Wildely

And next smart move will surely be Hillary noting her support of it. And Trump will just continue to call all of us losers.

  • Steven B

What part of equality are they not endorsing? Under what circumstance would protections for LGBT be a problem?
To come out and say POTUS “isn’t prepared” without an explanation is confusing given today’s social and political environment.

  • Alan43

He doesn’t have to face re-election, he’s moved aggressively on other recent issues like Cuba, not sure what’s going on…

  • NancyP

Hey, where’s the Equal Rights Amendment for women? No can do, too controversial.

  • CB

Yep. There’s still political hay to be made by hating the gays. Coward.

  • Circ09

Good. Then let the Executive Branch come out in favor of adding those 4 words to the Civil Rights Act instead. Obama has nothing to lose by going for broke. And when that is deemed too impossible Hillary Clinton fully supporting the Equality Act will seem like a great compromise. And we all know she is all about the compromise. Win-Win. Hey, I can dream, right?

  • bkmn

Are we back to that “fierce advocate” shit again?

  • KT

What the fuck does he have to lose at this point? He has a little over a year left before he can say “Peace out mutherfuckas!”. Why not endorse a bill that will do no harm to him politically – everyone already will assume he is favor of it.

  • GarySFBCN

OK, since this really wasn’t going to happen, I don’t care if his political strategy is to say “not ready.” Cut him some slack – he’s come through with a lot.

    • Toasterlad

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Don’t expect a reply. Like another rigid ideologue who shall not be named, when confronted with that specific question, he will simply dismiss, deflect or, as he did below, simply state that he’s just a narcissistic twat with delusions of superiority. Simply put, he nothing to offer.

        • Bill_Perdue

          Aww. Pro-war Tory is upset.

The socialist and labor reply is to beat Democrats in elections and in building mass movements to organize workers and arm them with a real program for change.

On November 8, 2016 vote Socialist or Labor, vote for good referendums and if there aren’t any Left candidates write in Chelsea Manning or join the majority in sitting it out.

It’s always better not to vote at all than to vote for our enemies, Democrats and Republicans.

“It is better to vote for what you want and not get it than to vote for what you don’t want and get it.” – Eugene V. Debs

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Really? Was that supposed to wound me?

So, are you going to run for office? I mean, after all, you apparently have all the answers.

Well? You willing to put your money and time where your mouth is?

          • Bill_Perdue

No. How does one wound a rightist by calling him a rightist?

Socialists will run for office but most of our efforts will go into organizing workers to fight against your kind of right wing politics.

Why don’t you run as a Tory? Come on, you know you want to.

    • Bj Lincoln

      Piss off troll!

      • JDM

Just the kind of reply I’d expect from a self-professed “Wiccan.” Religion is trash – even your New Age, metaphysical bullshit. Get over yourself.

        • Bj Lincoln

I don’t care what you think about me. You are nothing but a trouble maker who hides behind his computer. The internet allows bullies to be as mean or argumentative as they want and no one knows what total dick you really are.

          • JDM

Absolutely everything you just said about me can apply to you. Isn’t that great when that happens? Enjoy taking a big ol’ bath in that tub of irony, sugar tits.

          • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, honey, you are such a delight. Really, what gay man says “sugar tits?” So you just showed who and what you are. Now go fetch me a martini and start my bath, you are a slave to your ignorance. Bj come over here and have a drink.

          • JDM

What gay man names himself after a mediocre 15-year old sitcom character? And as mediocre as she was, you’ll never be 1/10 as funny as she was. Stop trying. You’re doing it wrong.

  • Bill

So, he supports the ‘idea’ of equality, but not equality?

    How reasonable.

  • Xuuths

    Joe Biden, where are you?!

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Joe Biden came out publicly in favor of marriage equality and the President followed suit. It would be good if decent man Joe did a repeat performance.

On the other hand, this is very disappointing, certainly, but somewhat academic. There is no way this would go through the current congress and Obama might be leaving the Dem candidates debate it and put it in their platform.

  • Toasterlad

This can’t be true. People have been telling me for the last two weeks that Obama got us marriage single-handedly, personally pushed the country to be pro-gay, and threw the first brick at Stonewall.

  • There had better be some pushback, big-time.

  • Cameron Stell

huh?? I would love to know the reason why. No re-election, no reason to curry favor on the right. I share the sentiment of others – a big WTF?

    • Gianni

My guess it that because we are in a presidential election cycle, he feels it isn’t a good time to hand the loonies on the right any more ammo than they already have. They are using all the gay fear they can against the Dem party now. The controversy over supporting this bill would likely sink any Democrat candidate’s hope of winning the presidency.

      • Bill_Perdue

The point is not to elect another bigot like HRH HRC, who supported DOMA until a few hours before she announced, but to promote the fight for LGBT liberation.

And by the way, that’s the same excuse Barney “Quisling’ Frank, Pelosi and Reid used in 2007 when they scuttled ENDA and the trans community to help the pandering by the two Democrat bigots running in 2008. http://www.bilerico.com/2007/09/guest_post_on_enda_from_congressman_fran.php

  • TheManicMechanic

    Okay, BP. Have at it.

    • Bill_Perdue

      Back to usual for Obama.

  • Bill_Perdue

    Unrebranding?

  • Bj Lincoln

I am so disappointed with our President right now. You can’t have it both ways! This is just SICK that we are STILL not equal to other Americans for no reason. The bible is NOT a reason to discriminate! He needs to look in the mirror and tell himself he is not worthy of equality just because he is black. He believes in equality but will not support the act! BULL SHIT OBAMA!

  • Sure, just like he supports gay marriage, didn’t let the justice department call us pedophiles and dog fuckers, and did everything in his power to end DADA and DOMA.

The Obama Administration is not your friend. Stop expecting them to act like it.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yes, because the republicans are totes supportive. Listen sweets, when your nation has only two choices, it’s better to go with the one that will at least meet you half way as opposed to the one who would gladly put a bullet in your head in the name of their god.

Pragmatism, it’s not always pretty but it’s all you have right now.

      • Bill_Perdue

“when your nation has only two choices”

Preposterous. The real choices are to engage in direct actions, which ended Bill Clinton’s DADT, and mass actions, which ended Bill Clintons DOMA and forced Obama to beg for our votes in 2012 after he helped defeat us in 2008.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh, I wasn’t aware there was a Third or Fourth political party that was a viable alternative……do tell, where are they? what are their names? And please, Obama begged? Really? What were the choices again, oh right: Obama or the Republicans….yeah, I can see how Obama was totally expecting queers to vote for Romney. You still don’t get it, do you? I’m not arguing against change, I’m just not impressed with people who bitch while not offering any real alternatives. It would be great to see a real Liberal candidate, but according to you, none exists. Here’s a thought, why don’t you run for office. You seem to have all the answers so, why aren’t you?

As for my comment about the number of choices, you know damned well what I meant when I stated “only two choices”, so naturally, you read it completely wrong.

Alright, this is where you now call me some childish name and such……you’re so predictable.

          • Bill_Perdue

It’s seems that you not ‘aware’ of anything real about politics in the US or in any modern capitalist country. No surprises here.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

As always a displeasure to interact with you Billy, but alas, I must depart.

Oh, and as always, you go ahead and reply with some snark, it is, after all, your stock in trade…..that and you love having the last word. Toodles.

          • Bill_Perdue

Tory troll loses and runs away. Again. Good.

      • Why is it that apologists always say this same “it could be worse” bullshit when you point out the truth? Just because he dressed it up in a prettier package didn’t change the fact this man will never be our ally. Which was exactly my point. Your patronizing response goes to show how naive you are. Putting a bow on it doesn’t change the fact you didn’t actually understand my ‘complaining’. And, FYI, hunty, pointing out that someone has never been on our side is actually doing something.
