LIVE VIDEO: Obama Welcome Pope Francis

With enormous pomp and circumstance, President Obama is welcoming Pope Francis to the United States in a speech on the White House lawn. Pope Francis will reportedly speak in English.

  • Huckabee sent out a tweetstorm of pissy whinyness. He’s pissed that gay people will meet the Pope.

    • Sam_Handwich

what the fuck is he talking about?

i bet he thinks the pope is the whore of babylon

      • I think he’s just pissed that gay people will be at the White House to meet the Pope. None of what he says makes sense. He’s getting slayed in the replies.

        • Ed Burrow

no, it’s not that. he’s pissed gay people exist.

          • StraightGrandmother

            That’s it.

        • Antinousian

“I think he’s just pissed that gay people will be at the White House to meet the Pope.”

Or that Josh Duggar hasn’t been invited to meet the Pope. πŸ˜›

        • GayOldLady

It’s not only gay people Hucksterbee is pissed about getting an invitation, it’s atheists and Catholic Nuns that support contraception and abortion. He is all in a dither over, we, the “heathens” being invited to the White House.

        • He’s pissed that he’s not the President.

        • Chris Baker

Actually, a pro-gay bishop is a delegate to the “Synod on the Family” in Rome. So I have a feeling the the Pope is pretty open to meeting people with diverse opinions. IMHO. (Meeting with someone does not mean approving of them. )

      • Mark

        Barbra Jean’s in town??

      • Steverino

And Huckster is the whore of babble-on.

    • Rex

Religious leaders of the day were pissed that Jesus spent so much time with whores and tax collectors.

    • Veylon

Mike’s acting like a scorned suitor. He’s miffed that he Pope chose Obama over him.

  • joe ho

i’ve never heard obama string together so many platitudes so unconvincingly.

    • bill weber

you haven’t been listening to him much, then. it’s his job.

      • joe ho

nah. this time it was more than usual.

        try again.

  • David From Canada

I’ll never forget something that Rolling Stone magazine stated: Unlike Pope Benedict, Pope Francis performs a miracle by merely being able to SMILE.

    • ExGayTherapyKills

FAKE Christian smile, behind that is an evil man.

  • Peter Wde

Oh look, it’s God’s representative on earth… and the Pope!

    • ExGayTherapyKills

      Leader of the Catholic pedophiles.

    • bill weber

      ^UNUSUALLY HONEST DEMBOT

  • j.martindale

Talk about animus! Are there any other people this ass wipe believes are inferiors who should not be treated as full fledged Americans? Or are we the only ones he feels comfortable discriminating against? My personal preference is that Evangelical religious bigots be prohibited from appearing in public.

  • delk

Pope just brought up climate change. Nut job heads are exploding!

  • Corey

Thank you Pope Francis for your truthful comments on climate change!

  • Gigi

I read that Rethugs warned the Pope not to challenge them on their policies. Like he’s gonna listen to them!

    • Dot Beech

Kim Davis can march to her preacher’s orders, but the Pope? No, he’s supposed to toe the line.

    • Reality Check

The Republicans are going to continue to panic and freak out over the next 5 years until the US 2020 Census lands like a thud. Demographics are not in their favor.

    • BobSF_94117

Well, with social policy memos passing back and forth between the GOP and the Vatican since 1978, it’s not outlandish for them to expect him to carry on the tradition.

  • joe ho

    ……

    • Henry Horton

Keep the hoodie, i’ll take the hood.

  • Sam_Handwich
    • Paula

Little Tommy, do I detect a note of Sadz?

    • Peter Wde

You have to admit, Peter’s does illustrate a valid point here.

      • Gustav2

Yeah, and you have 2nd Amendment rights until you shoot a citizen.

        • Peter Wde

I may not be the sharpest pencil in the box but struggling to understand here…

          • Gustav2

You have the right to have your gun until you use it against a citizen. None of the Bill of Rights are unlimited.

          • Peter Wde

First situation is contingent. Second point is true though.

          • Gustav2

And you have a right to your religion until it impedes a fellow citizen, especially as a representative of government.

          • j.martindale

Or until it comes in conflict with the laws of the land–like anti-discrimination ordinances or the 14th Amendment, or Supreme Court rulings such as Obergefell.

      • SoCalVet

no he doesn’t. No one’s stopping anyone from practicing their faith freely. Peter’s only point is on that he’s got the life his God wants him to have.

  • joe ho

yes. the pope and his church keeping women in third world countries poor and diseased by condemning the use of birth control and condoms.

    • GayOldLady

That’s called propagation of the faith. The church opposes contraception, except for rhythm, which isn’t reliable. The church condemns abortion under any circumstance. Then the church teaches these poor women that they should have children and their children must be raised catholic. Then these poor women have a multitude of children who become future Catholics. The ROI is incredible.

    • ExGayTherapyKills

Finally somebody got it, the Catholic church is all about keeping people down and slaves who work and give them money.

      • joe ho

        they’re also into sado-masochism.

they claim that pain and suffering allows people to become closer to christ, so why really end the conditions that cause the suffering.

see christopher hitchen’s devastating expose of mother theresa’s ghoulish delight in pain, “missionary position.”

    • bill weber

And the POTUS murders women and children with drones. Ta da!

      • joe ho

potus doesn’t claim to be the vicar of christ.

        but thanks for playing.

  • StraightGrandmother

Not watching, I’ll leave it to Joe and other progressives to show me a highlight reel.
Not gonna dignify the Head of the Roman Catholic Church by taking any time to watch him.

    • Mike in Texas

I was about to say basically the same thing.

    • Gustav2

We haven’t had to listen to a pope since 1517 and Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum

      • ROFLMFPAO!!!

        • Wanda Moore

      • ExGayTherapyKills

Same old king of the pedophiles pushing their agenda, control the slaves for the rich and the powerful.

    • ExGayTherapyKills

I’m with you granny who wants to see a poope.

    • SilasMarner

Yeah, I couldn’t believe all the fawning and preening of the media coverage of this “persons” arrival in our country. I was disgusted and turned off the TV because I couldn’t escape it.

    • Mark

I’m with you SG – fuck this “advocate man of the year,” who speaks out of both sides of his mouth – no fucking use for ANY religious leader. Period.

  • rednekokie

I watched it, and was impressed by the show put on by the military, even though it was a bit overdone.
Both speeches were genuine in tone, and apparently well received.

It’s nice that we have a president who knows how to treat foreign guests. The last one certainly didn’t.

    • Steve Teeter

It’s ironic that we would put on such an elaborate military display for the earthly representative of the Prince of Peace.

  • BobSF_94117

An hour and 48 minutes? No way.

  • ExGayTherapyKills

The president and the pope are just tools that the rich and powerful people use to keep the masses of people in line. It is all about the control and government and the Christian religion are used to control you for the rich and the powerful 10 world banking families who sit at the top with the most money.

  • Dead Giveaway

The man they call pope is guilty of crimes against humanity.

    • bill weber

      like his host.

  • GanymedeRenard

I suspect this comment will be unpopular – I know, and I accept it. That being said, I’m sorry, but I feel an odd mixture of sadness and anger when I see Mr. Obama treating a foreign head of State with such deference that can be easily taken for humiliation. Furthermore, evoking Jesus (of whose existence we don’t have a shred of evidence), and how this Argentine guest is supposedly a living example of his teachings? I’m not with you on this one, Mr. Obama.

    • cleos_mom

Please revise the passive voice: who is going to take a boffo reception for a foreign head of state as humiliation and submission?

The useful thing about the passive voice is that it skips over that identification part.

      • GanymedeRenard

Sorry if my syntax or morphology upset you – English is not my native language, and I speak four other languages (so you can imagine the grammatical mess that can sometimes occur in my mind). In any case, I appreciate your correction.

Per the content of my post, I’m not talking about the reception per se – these diplomatic events happen all the time, obviously. I’m talking about the hyperbolically high esteem and excessive reverence with which Mr. Obama refers to his religious guest, pontiff or not.

I know that comparisons between countries can be unpleasing, but I prefer the official approach that the French take vis-Γ -vis the religion/State separation. It’s called ‘laΓ―citΓ©’, as you may know, and it’s an irrenounceable (is that a word?) value of their Republic. Sometimes I don’s agree with it (e.g., when they force women take off their hiyabs in public offices). I may be wrong on this, but I don’t think any French President would treat a Roman Catholic Pope, or the Grand Rabbi of Jerusalem, or an Iranian ayatollah with such flagrant idolization. Again, that’s just my opinion.

        • Steven Leahy

Your English is excellent; I thought your comments were spot on.

          • GanymedeRenard

            πŸ˜€

        • cleos_mom

You’re entitled to your opinion, and any other bromide I’m expected to recite here. But please give some kind of concrete example of “the hyperbolically high esteem and excessive reverence with which Mr. Obama refers to his religious guest”.

And somehow, I don’t think “that’s how they do it in France” would impress even the righties who are distraught-and-distrait over the Pope’s reception. Though I could be wrong.

          • GanymedeRenard

Of course I am, thank you very much. And so are you!

Concrete example? Just listen to Mr. Obama’s welcoming words. Did you listen it in its entirety? He sounds as he’s welcoming Jesus Christ himself!

I really couldn’t care less if the righties are impressed or not. I gave a concrete example of a different approach regarding the separation of religion or State in a foreign country. By no means did I imply it was the best, either.

    • Steven Leahy

I agree with you 100%. No argument from me. Like Obama was bowing before a fucking king.

      • GanymedeRenard

        Thank you!

  • matt n

i think he changed something in his prepared statement when he mentioned that “injustice, discrimination” are unacceptable. the caholic right wing bishops are always using the phrase that they reject “unjust discrimination,” which means just discrimination against gay marriage is acceptable. i don’t think this reworking was a slip on francis’ part. he continues to struggle with the bishops appointed by benedict who want him gone.

  • matt n

st. augustine’s choir. that’s a really fun black catholic church in dc. black majority. very interesting. nice touch that the white house invited them. this whole thing was obviously meticulously planned by the white house. the pope must be impressed. the republican religous right must be going nuts. obama is stealing their mantle.

    • ExGayTherapyKills

      Catholic slaves.

  • TexPlant

Why people makes such a big deal about the man in a dress?
