Biden: I Still Haven’t Made Up My Mind [VIDEO]

The New York Times reports:

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., in an emotional, wide-ranging interview on Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” on Thursday, expressed doubt about the likelihood that he would run for president, saying that “I’d be lying if I said that I knew I was there.” Repeatedly touching on his parents, his faith and his emotional fragility from the recent death of his son Beau, Mr. Biden told Mr. Colbert that no “man or woman should run for president” without being able to promise voters that “you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy, and my passion.” “Nobody has a right, in my view, to seek that office unless they are willing to give it 110 percent of who they are,” Mr. Biden told Mr. Colbert, on his third night hosting the CBS program. Mr. Biden made just a few jokes on the show, saying to Mr. Colbert, who in 2012 ran a fake campaign for president, that “you should run for president again, and I’ll be your vice president.” The vice president never said directly that he did not plan to run for president, a decision that would disappoint the handful of “Draft Biden” supporters who chanted “Run, Joe, Run” in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan, where the show was taped Thursday afternoon. But Mr. Biden repeatedly seemed to hint that he may not be ready to run for president for a third time.

Both clips are worth your time. It was a fascinating interview.

Even though I don’t agree with him on everything, I truly love and respect this man and we’d be honored to have someone with his sincerity as president.

    • I’ll admit that I often facepalm over the things that come out of his mouth but at his core he’s still a good guy. A decent man. That’s so incredibly rare in our politics, that it is truly noteworthy and admirable in and of itself.

He is pro-RIAA, anti-encryption, he voted for DOMA and DADT. He flip-flopped his views when it became favourable to do so, just like Hillary.

I can’t condone anyone being responsible for nuclear weapons who believes in an imaginary friend from the sky. He thinks questioning the sanity of such a thing should not be allowed.

        Let’s not pretend he’s a decent man. He’s a politician.

Look who Biden has as JMG-mates — Courser, Gamrat, Trump, Beck, Palin, Bachmann, and that’s just today, so far. He stands out like some kind of holy
fucking grail in contrast to these swine…

    • crewman

I think he’s the best candidate.

I don’t often make political comment in public, and my reasons for doing so are personal. But when I do, it is to bring attention to something that I find exceptional, and with great merit.

This interview with Joe Biden is one of the most remarkable and remarkably honest interviews I’ve ever seen a politician give… much less a sitting Vice-President.

Biden would make a good president, but not in this political climate. Why would anyone in their right mind want to put up with the current dysfunction in Washington? Go take it easy, Joe, and write us the definitive book on why the government is so screwed up.

  • disqus_oCvsL5SBJH

    Sanders/Biden 2016

    • Rambie

Biden should be at the top of the ticket. Biden/Warren 2016 would be my preference but Biden/Sanders would be good too.

  • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

Meanwhile, a CNN poll out today (taken before the interview aired) shows Biden outperforming Clinton against the top Republicans by about 10 points. And he’s not even running officially. If those poll numbers continue, somebody at Democratic HQ is going to pressure him to run. Which creates a huge problem because almost all the top Dems have already endorsed HIllary back when they thought she was invincible.

  • Michael Rush

He has all the qualities conservatives ( falsely ) claim to be looking for .

  • SockMikey

I watched most of the interview, but then had to change the channel because it was bringing back some sadness/family memories and a few tears.

What a difference we’d have if all the candidates and members of government had more of his heart.

One of my pet peeves is that government is not representative of it’s people in racial and sexual makeup.

We need many more women and minorities (of all races), but with heart and willing to work together and move the USA forward.

  • MikeBx2

I have much sympathy for Biden. I had a brother who died from brain cancer in his early 50’s, so I know first hand the pain and horror of watching someone you love die from that terrible disease.

But having said that, it is easy to appear authentic and vulnerable when you are NOT running. As soon as he announces he is in, if he does, they will go after him full throttle, including some Democrats, just as they have with Clinton. Biden knows this very well. I predict he will not get in the race.

    • 2patricius2

      That is so true.

  • bob

I didn’t care for the way Colbert kept trying to get him to commit, saying things like “we need you”. You can tell he’s still very upset about his son, and he’s just not ready for the circus of running.

  • KenDC

Late night just got a whole new ball game. This reminded me just a tad of the interviews David Frost did. It is fun to watch Fallon playing silly games with stars promoting movies, but Colbert is going to bring real substance to his show.

I love Biden; there is hardly anything about him that seems focus-grouped.

  • anne marie in philly

don’t think he will run; his heart’s not in it without his son. and his wife wants to leave the public fishbowl behind too in 2016.

  • LAguy323

So, he’s not gonna run! Now: can the ratings hungry political pundits let it go?

  • e jerry powell

    Really? Hmm.
