Hillary Clinton To Surrender Email Server To FBI, Poll Shows Majority Support Criminal Probe

The Washington Post reports:

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s attorney has agreed to provide the FBI with the private server that housed her e-mail during her four years as secretary of state, Clinton’s presidential campaign said Tuesday. Her attorney also has agreed to give agents a thumb drive containing copies of thousands of e-mails that Clinton had previously turned over to the State Department. The FBI has been looking into the security of Clinton’s unusual private system, which has emerged as an issue in her campaign amid growing questions from Republicans and some U.S. intelligence officials about whether government secrets might have been put at risk. The development in the FBI inquiry came the same day that a top intelligence official whose office has been reviewing some of Clinton’s e-mails informed congressional leaders that top-secret information had been contained in two e-mails that traveled across the server.

According to a Monmouth University poll released today, a slim majority supports a criminal investigation into Clinton’s email practices while Secretary of State.

The numbers — 52% of registered voters, including 82% of Republicans, 54% of independents and 23% of Democrats — show that the Democratic presidential frontrunner’s use of a personal email address on a private server during her tenure as secretary of state continues to be damaging. They were asked: “Do you think Hillary Clinton’s emails should be subject to a criminal investigation for potential release of classified material, or not?” The survey was conducted July 21-Aug. 2, before Clinton’s campaign announced it would turn over her server to the Justice Department in an effort to blunt an expanding probe.

  • j.martindale

What malice can she be accused of that would lead to a criminal investigation? Nothing! More fishing expeditions.

    • Ian

It isn’t about malice, more about negligence. And the GOP may well be fishing, I hope that her turning over the server will put it to bed for good, but the republicans have been looking for anything to slow her down.

      • j.martindale

Then every politician in Washington should be investigated. They don’t have an issue she has been shown to be negligent ABOUT! She had a private server. Oikos makes an interesting point about that below. We have–as is ALWAYS the case when the press and the Thugs deal with the Clintons–an investigation to find a crime, not to solve one.

        • Ian

          I agree wholeheartedly.

  • BearEyes

I’d like to know what the rationale was for a private server in the first place.

    • ScottJL

Exactly, not that I am against her, but surely she’s smart enough to have known better. Have to wonder what the reason was that outweighed the risk.

    • Joe in PA

when this story first got traction, didn’t it come out that many former Secretaries of State had used private email servers? But I agree, at least tell us why she thought she needed a non-government server to do government work.

      • MickinDetroit

slightly different…but sure. And HRC was one of the those vilifying GWB officials for conducting government business through non government servers….. so the defense is now what? They did it too?

We know why she did it… same as why GWB admin folks did it…same reason Jeb! did it. to have total control over what can be subpoenaed and what you can delete from the prying eyes of oversight committees

        • Joe in PA

so the defense is now what? They did it too?

gosh that is exactly what I meant, and you are really good at mind reading.

          • MickinDetroit

My point is there is no defense to having it at all for any reason…..I’m not sure why anyone, such as your self or any of her defenders would think differently. Perhaps you can enlighten me on what reason would justify her setting up a private server to conduct government business?

    • Mark

About the only reason I can come up with is that there is no trust in the government – especially among its ’employees’. Obviously the government’s IT team has failed the ultimate and primary test: trust.

    • Prion

Control. Self-serving control, pure and simple. She knew she would eventually run for POTUS when she agreed to be Secretary of State. Being the ultimate politician she also knew emails are likely to be released and her SoS record could be used against her, so she wanted to control that record as much as possible.
Good strategy in theory; in practice not so much.

  • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

This is the smart thing for her to do. Of course, that won’t stop all the Republicans in congress from starting dozens and dozens of “probes” regardless of what the FBI says.

  • Gene

lance the boil. it wont affect those who would not have supported her…or those who already would not have…and most people have personal experience of having fucked up on computers. this is no good thing, but, not the end of the world…although FOX will describe it as a cross of Titanic/Hindenburg arriving at the port of New Orleans during hurricane Katrina. meh

    • another_steve

The email episode is scummy (not that unusual as far as Things Clinton go), but fortunately for Hillary it’s coming to a head now and not in 2016, when people will really start paying attention to the election.

The real loser today is Donald Trump.

Clinton managed to squeeze him out of the morning headlines today!

  • Bj Lincoln

Let them look. If she did send big secrets then they will find them. If she didn’t, then they will look as stupid as they do trying to find her guilty of…well…you name it.

    • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

When has the fear of looking stupid ever deterred the GOP?

      • AtticusP

Hell, I think it’s an incentive!

    • canoebum

I don’t trust the FBI to do an impartial investigation of this. Who’s going to be in charge and insure the integrity of the process? I smell a rat.

      • Todd20036

Sorry. That’s my cologne. Eau de Ratatouille

    • Stephen Elliot Phillips

      “YOU LIE!”
      (joe wilson september 2009)

  • SoCalVet

more fabricated scandal from the Republicans. It’s all they have…other than Donald Trump.

    • TommyTune

This has the same foul whiff as the Whitewater non-scandal that cost taxpayers $70 million back in the late nineties (the equivalent of nearly $100 million in today’s dollars) for a congressional investigation led by that prim and prissy Ken Starr, all of which came to naught. It’s déja vu all over again.

  • Peter Wde

How many HRC lies at this point? And it’s just getting started!

    • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

How many valuable pixels have been wasted on Republican fabrications and Kardashian stories? Save the bits and bytes!

      • Peter Wde

I wonder what the FBI IT forensics team is going to uncover on that server…should be interesting.

Hell, at this point the Republican attack ads practically write themselves

        • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

Hillary’s not my favorite, but y’all had Satan himself and his sockpuppet W in the White House for 8 years. Compared to what they did, the FBI could turn up video of Hillary clubbing baby seals and she would still look morally superior to the last Republican administration.

          • Peter Wde

But that administration isn’t running for office in 2016, crucial diff here.

          • Dramphooey

Yes it is. George W. Jeb Bush 2000 2016.

          • Peter Wde

            Not really, but nice try.

          • Dramphooey

Same people and you know it. “Nice try” is as overused as “just saying” and is no response whatsoever.

          • Peter Wde

No, quite different people and you know it…cause you know that thing about running more than twice for president…think its in that document thingy.

          • nowaRINO

Yes, the same neocons have lined up to be with any Republican administration. I am not looking forward to ‘We Will Be Greeted As Liberators—Iran Part Deux’

          • Peter Wde

Never hearing the words “Bush” or “Clinton” again = a saner more rational world.

    • oikos

I will support an investigation when one about this takes place as well

      • RaygunsGoZap

Wdeghazi don’t care about that here! Wdeghazi posting that over at conservative blog!

        • oikos

          FTW: Wdeghazi

      • Peter Wde

        Let’s do it.

    • RaygunsGoZap

  • AtticusP

  • Webslinger

Get it over with it…have them probe and investigate but get this door closed and then never have it re-opened…would have preferred this done as SOON as the issue came to light…too much is at stake and the rhetoric that others can produce about it has to be SHUT DOWN…

  • Rick

Oh dear god. Did you email David Cameron her cashew brittle recipe? What was she thinking?!

  • Rex

I want to know what other juicy tidbits they’ll find, stuff only her hairdresser or gay bestie would know. (Probably the same person.)

  • MartinNYC

On top of all her other baggage, this? Sweet Jesus Hillary, you seem so – staid and boring half the time, yet you sure now how to stir the shit up don’t you?

Don’t worry Girl, we have your back.

    • sherman

This is totally another fake republican scandal. Benghazi II. Every Secretary of State before her used a private server.

  • Smokes Alot

Obama will put a final nail in HRC’s legacy. Not the GOP.
Like JMG says, inside fighting is fun.
Obama is going to do a whoopie doopie on Hillary.

    • Dramphooey

I’m tempted to like this just for the use of “whoopie doopie.”

      • Sk3ptic

Yep…right up there with “bees’ knees,” “daddy-O,” and “swell.”

  • ryan charisma

I’m just gonna continue not caring.

  • Robincho

Benghazi may very well be Hillary’s blowjob. And the Rethugz, with a zeal that even Ken Starr might envy, may very well impeach her. Convict, no. But I’m-
    peach, possibly…

  • Buttervoid

I got email from Hillary once. It said ” masc seek masc. DISCREET ONLY”m

    • Octavio

Then why was she sending you e-mail?

      • oikos

        Does sound rather suspicious. 🙂

      • billbear1961

  • GarySFBCN

Don’t get me wrong – if it is between Clinton and any Republican, I’m voting for Clinton.

That said, this is all for show.

    • Todd20036

Um, are we talking about the voting booth or the bedroom

  • and the insipid “where there’s smoke, there must be fire” agenda continues to smolder on….

  • UgggggggggGGGGGGGGggggggggggggggh.

  • gaylib

I think your use of the term “surrendering” is a bit misleading Joe. The FBI didn’t demand that she turn it over, she is doing so voluntarily so that it is in the hands of an impartial body, not some “third party” determined by Gowdy and the BenCrazy committee.

    • Peter Wde

Hand the server over “voluntarily” or it will be seized.

      • gaylib

Please provide a link showing the FBI has threatened to seize anything.

        • Peter Wde

          So naive, so naive…

  • Smokes Alot

    Obama hates the Clinton’s.
He has the FBI actually investigating this email server and inserted his buddy,
and keeper of his “legacy” Crazy Joe. I’ll say it again, DEM infighting is fun.

    • oikos
      • Smokes Alot

        No tin foil here.
Obama is going to torpedo HRC. He
is calling her out on carpet with FBI. DEM Infighting is fun.

        • oikos

Total tinfoil. She has agreed to provide the server. There is zero evidence in any article that Obama is trying to do anything in this regard. Congrats, you are still the Tin foil hat award winner of the day.

          • Smokes Alot

Then why did HRC lawyer up?
You tinfoil asshat…FBI going to do what Obama says. Not GOP. See you on the other side when smoke clears.

          • oikos

Could you translate that word salad into English? ‘The FBI IS going to do what Obama says.” “See you on the other side when THE smoke clears.”
Intelligible grammar and citations for your claims would lend some much needed credibility to your tinfoil hat claims.

          • stevenj

            What ARE you smoking?

          • Smokes Alot

            The best. Gives good vibes.

  • And when it turns out that the private server was more secure than the government server, can we please move on? (Of course not, every time I turn around, some right wing idiot is waving madly, shouting Benghazi! or Vince Foster!)

  • Octavio

Poor Hillary. She should have handed everything over to the FBI as soon as they asked for it. Is she now forced to use a Yahoo email address?

  • bill weber

You know what the Obama Administration would be if they prosecuted her? Consistent.

Obama has prosecuted more people under the 100-year-old Espionage Act than any other president

  • Rod Steely

“Even for a Republican White House that was badly stumbling through George W. Bush’s sixth year in office, the revelation on April 12, 2007 was shocking. Responding to congressional demands for emails in connection with its investigation into the partisan firing of eight U.S. attorneys, the White House announced that as many asfive million emails, covering a two-year span, had been lost.”

  • DanimalChgo

If anyone supports a “criminal investigation” into this non-story, it’s because on 7/24 the NYTimes reported there already WAS one – and then local news stations all across the country copied the story. By the end of the day, and over the next two days, the Times was forced to retract almost all of the story. There was NO criminal investigation started, the story was wrong on almost every point. But while the Times issued corrections, how many of those smaller news outlets that copy/pasted the original version ever spoke up about the retractions? (I know for a fact the WGN Morning News reported it but has never mentioned the correction.) I will bet money almost none did. So now a huge number of people who don’t pay close attention to the news have this vague memory of “Clinton + emails + criminal investigation” lingering in their heads, when it’s just not true.
Add to this the number of people whose brains go blank at the mere mention of the words “email server” because that’s technical mumbo-jumbo they can’t understand. Which is exactly why Republicans are loving this because they know they can use the confusing fine details to make it sound evil and sinister.
This shit drives me up a tree.

  • Chris O’Guinn

I seem to recall the Bush administration using the RNC mail servers for all sorts of sensitive emails and when they were asked to fork over the hard drives they said, “Ooops, looks like everything was deleted.”

  • Gerry Fisher

Let’s get this investigation out of the way NOW, please.
