MICHIGAN: Melissa Gilbert Announces Run For Congress

NBC News reports:

The actress perhaps best known for her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder on the TV series “Little House on the Prairie” is taking a run at Congress. Melissa Gilbert announced Monday her candidacy to represent Michigan’s 8th congressional district as a Democrat, the seat currently held by Republican Mike Bishop. Bishop was first elected in 2014 and will be running as the incumbent in 2016. Michigan’s 8th district includes the state capital, Lansing, and Oakland, Ingham and Livingston counties, where Gilbert and her husband live. The campaign, Gilbert for Michigan, also announced Gilbert has been particularly attuned to issues confronting women, children and families. “I’m running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today’s economy,” the campaign said in a statement. “I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.”

Gilbert is the former head of the Screen Actors Union.

    half-pint in congress…..nahhhh

    • Goodboy

As a kid I sure had the hots for her tv bo Almonzo though.

      • LonelyLiberal

Lordy, didn’t we all? I wanted to see Manly and Pa give it to Perceival.

        • bdsmjack

I always wanted to see that bear Mr. Edwards pound Pa over a barrel in the sawmill.

          • LonelyLiberal

I reserved my Mr. Edwards fantasies for Jonathan Garvey. It was a total bearfest.

      • TexPlant

        Albert was the real hottie

  • Sporkfighter

So was Ronald Reagan. Let the Republicans try and use that against her!

    • Cuberly

Over at mediaite they are. And yes, the ignorance is breathtaking over there.

  • Keiffer

If only she were a candidate in Illinois, the Prairie State –
that’d be a marketing gold mine.

  • Cuberly

I’d vote for her step-sister, Sarah Gilbert, in a heartbeat.

    • e jerry powell

Half-sister, but okay. Melissa is Gilbert, Sara was Abeles (until 1984). Paul Gilbert was their mother’s first husband.

      • Cuberly

Ha…ok, but I’d still vote for her. πŸ˜‰

        • e jerry powell

          Because you should.

          • Cuberly

Ha!…..maybe we need to start a “Recruit Sarah” campaign.

          • Circ09

I’d rather recruit Linda Perry…at least she isn’t timid. And knows how to speak her mind.

          • Cuberly

I tend to think of them both as being rather forthright.

But I hear what you’re saying.

  • As noted by JMG, her previous political experience was serving as President of the Screen Actors Guild. But that was also Ronald Reagan’s sole political experience before he ran for Governor of California. If Gopher could get elected to Congress, why not Laura Ingalls?

  • Jason

She owes the IRS $350k in back taxes.

    • leastyebejudged

The IRS SAYS that she owes them that.

      It’s not necessarily true.

      • yetanotherLaura

True. Some years back they said I owed over 10K. I ended up paying $100. Not quite as much as the nasty witch of an auditor claimed….

    • DumbHairyApe

She might have to sell that little house on the prairie.

  • Circ09

The shocker is that she is running as a Democrat. I wonder if the GOP finally got too crazy for her or if her new husband made her see the error of her ways? Interesting that they moved back to Busfield’s hometown. He still seems to work regularly as an actor and director.

  • Pollos Hermanos

I love her to death but I have to post this.

    • LonelyLiberal

So there’s sumthin’ scary on the prairie…

      • Pollos Hermanos

I was lucky enough to meet Alison when she was promoting this book. She also did a lot of work for AIDS Project Los Angeles. She is truly good people.

        • I have read her book multiple times and watched tons of interviews. She’s a great person and does great work on behalf of abused children, AIDS and other causes. She’s also hilarious. She has so many great stories to tell both from her stint on LHotP and after.

        • bdsmjack

I got an autographed copy when I saw her show –which was all kinds of awesome!

      • bdsmjack

I LOVE that book and the brilliant show she built around it. If you were a fan of Little House, it’s a must read!

        • There’s a bit of dirt about the show but mostly it’s funny stuff (Michael Landon didn’t wear underwear!). The horrible things that happened to her happened at home. The set was an oasis for her. She has great stories to tell and tells them well. So many showbiz bios are rather dull. “I did this and then I did that.” Alison spills and it gives you a real sense of being there. To quote her: “Anyone can be adorable, but to scare the crap out of people takes real talent!”

    • Blake J Butler

if it had a title like that, than for 1970’s TV i would wonder if the show was named like how it would make it past the pilot.

  • RDnDC

    Good for her.

  • Tawdry D’Tails

    And bonnet-heads rejoice…
Just reminds me that Alison Angrim’s book is definitely worth reading…

    • e jerry powell

But who wants to read a book if you can talk to her directly?

  • rusty57

I wish her all the best. That district encompasses Livingston county (home of the former grand wazoo of the Michigan KKK) and northern Oakland county, full of libertarians, nouveau riche republicans and teabillies. The fact that Ingham County (Lansing and especially East Lansing) is tacked onto the western edge is almost inconsequential.
My sister, who lives in Cohoctah, has spotted the Busfield-Gilberts about Howell.

  • e jerry powell

Hmm. My memory is vague, but the last time a SAG president turned to politics, Reagan ended up POTUS for eight years.

  • Octavio

It’s all well and good that she wants to run for Congress, but she has a load of bucks owed to the IRS for not paying taxes. Something like more than $100,000? Maybe she should think about clearing that debt before taking on any new hobbies.* πŸ™‚

*Of course, that has never stopped grifters such as Marco el Rubio from seeking higher office. Tee hee.

  • Tony Adams

Like so many of her kind, she paid a doctor to make a tragic mask out of her face. (Later, she paid another one to repair it. Hard to know what she actually looks like.)
Better to make your big mistakes before getting into politics.

    • JCF

Is this post necessary? Talk about her politics, not her looks (surgically altered or not), please.

      • Tony Adams

It’s not a post. It’s a comment. Her face/persona/performance/politics have blurred lines. So, talking about blurred lines is valid. Is it necessary to do so? Of course not.

      • David From Canada

I live right across the river from Michigan, and they were talking about her on a Detroit radio station this morning. Tony Adams may be jumping to conclusions. The photo of her that he posted looks like she has simply aged and put on a little weight. She’s not going to look 21 forever. However , she has had breast implants removed.
The radio commentator stated that she has only lived in Michigan for 2 years, and therefore she may not really know the needs of the state that well. However, Michigan has become so conservative that I would certainly support her running as a Democrat. It’s really time for Michigan to become a liberal state again.

  • Comixbear

It makes sense that she’s running…after all, Donald Trump IS bassically Nellie Oleson!

    • Steven Leahy

LOL and ironic in that Nellie’s real-life persona (Alison Arngrim) was a really nice person and an AIDS activist.

  • bdsmjack

For some reason, I thought she was Republican. when did she switch parties?

  • kaydenpat

    Good luck to her.

  • Michael Hampton

I hope she wins and finally gets rid of their discriminatory laws. I want to go back to Campit!
