Charlotte Pride Forecasts 100,000 Attendance

Every year anti-gay activist Michael Brown and hundreds of his red-shirted supporters wade into Charlotte Pride to scream damnation. This year they can expect a massive crowd. Via the Charlotte Observer:

One of the largest LGBT events in the South will take over uptown Charlotte this weekend, bringing in a predicted 100,000 people. Among the expected highlights is a Sunday parade with a record 2,700 registered participants, another indication that the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is in a celebratory mood after the Supreme Court’s recent decision legalizing same-sex marriage. Organizers say this year’s event should be the largest gay pride event ever held in the Carolinas, based on the fact that the festival has set crowd records every year since 2011. “Charlotte is now home to the third-largest LGBT event in the South, and that’s something to be proud of when you consider this is only the third year we’ve had our parade as part of it,” said Matt Comer, who is in charge of marketing for the event. “That’s a testament to the growth of the LGBT community and the reshaping of this city. … It’s not all that long ago that people who might have been seen participating in a gay pride event here would have been fired the following day in this once-conservative church and banking town.”

Last year Charlotte Pride launched a social media campaign against their main local haters. (Tipped by JMG reader Scott)

  • 100K? Good grief, that’s a lot of sodomy.

    • Ed Burrow

i know, right? It sounds absolutely delicious!

    • Frostbite

Really only half that number, unless they’re versatile.

      • Gyeo

Schrödinger’s Gay: A gay man is both a top and a bottom until observed,

        • Octavio

So much truth to the observing part. Many years ago in a galaxy far away a big ol’ famous top I’d known for years met up with me and some “new” friends in NYC early one Sat. morning. I was quite surprised to see him an hour later naked with legs in the air performing in the middle of my living room floor. He seemed to be enjoying himself. 🙂

        • JustSayin

Rolf! U win today’s internet prize!

      • Chris Baker

Actually a quarter, since half will be lesbians.

    • Blake Jordan

It may be a lot, but you can never have enough sodomy!!!

    • JT

If Brown is there, there should be mass simulations of sodomy in front of him, maybe a synchronized performance like a marching band.

      • David Walker

        You mean “76 Sliding Trombones”?

        • JT

The pubic bone’s connected to the trombone …

        • TheManicMechanic

          Rusty trombones.

      • Steverino

Sodomy in front of some dummy.

  • Michael Rush

it’s great that the Benham brothers have been
able to put their ” curious ” phase behind them .

    • RaygunsGoZap

Have they? They look like athe very picture of double-duggary to me.

    • Wait, they’re “ex-gay”? I thought they were simply flipping forward from one closet to the next.

      • StraightGrandmother

        No I don’t think they are ex-gay.
Daddy is a preacher & these are his twin Bible Thumping sons.

    • Todd20036

Their bigotry cost them a lucrative job in HGTV, not to mention their own happiness.
      Sucks to be them.

  • oikos

Poor haters, as time goes on there will be fewer and fewer of you.

  • Pollos Hermanos
  • MattM

The Benham brothers and Michael Brown would be much more agreeable if they just did away with all that pent up sexual frustration.

    • teeveedub

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen so much gay face in two memes.

    • bambinoitaliano

Would not help these premature ejaculators one bit.

  • How much money do these lost souls make pimping out HATE?
What is the going rate for pundits that have self esteem issues?
Will they dress appropriately this time or wear any old thing?
Rather promiscuous of them not to have a clue if you ask me…

    • DonnaLee

Well exactly, the city would have an anti-gay parade too, but it doesn’t pay. If you want to see scowling faces, just go to church.

      • StraightGrandmother

        That was pretty funny Donna.

      • David Walker

Well said, DonnaLee. It never ceases to amaze and delight me that when you compare the expressions on people’s faces at demonstrations, parades, or almost gathering, the gays (with understandable exceptions) always seem to be having fun, are happy, are gay (for the old farts who want the “original definition” restored) while the anti folks, the churchbound, those in Brian’s or Tony’s get togethers all look so incredibly angry. It does seem that generally we enjoy life ahelluvalot more than those who know Jeebus.

  • Bj Lincoln

They failed because the city stands to make a small fortune on that many people. Tourism of any kind is a good thing for a city. Requesting the city cancel or not give permits is not too smart…but then they are not too smart.

    • JustSayin

      As much as I despised
New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin, he once publicly told the southern baptist convention whiners who were complaining about Southern Decadence that until they brought in 100,000 tourists to Nola for a week in August and they spent in excess if 20 million; over that week that they could shut up about it.

On a fun note to remember antigay preacher grant storms was arrested for spanking his monkey at a kids park. He has since stopped protesting southern decadence.

  • Mr. Spiffy

I wish Don King was still alive to see this.

    • WaltHawkNYC

      I wish Jesse Helms was.

      • gaymex

For those of us unfortunate enough to have known Jesse Helms in NC, I really don’t wish that. But had he been alive, the parade would have killed him. So at least that part is good.

        • WaltHawkNYC

I lived in NC during most of the Jesse Helms years. I do hope, wherever he is, he is witnessing the progress the gay community has made. I also take great solace in knowing that Anita Bryant is still alive and has seen the federal legalization of same-sex marriage.

      • gaymex

Jesse will miss the parade, but he did get to see this.

      • Mr. Spiffy

I much prefer a world in which Don is alive and Jesse dead. Don did a lot of good in the world. The gay community in Charlotte would not be what it is without him. He was the first person I ever heard identify himself as gay to a non-gay person. I wanted to die, but it turned out to be one of those moments that made me stronger.

        • WaltHawkNYC

I just want to apologize. I was being facetious, of course, which was probably inappropriate. As a native North Carolinian (born and raised in Charlotte), I just remember the vulgarity of Jesse Helms’ hatred and the frustration I felt as he was continually re-elected. But, you are right. I would much rather someone be alive who would celebrate the accomplishments of the gay community, not someone who would spew even more vitriol.

          • Mr. Spiffy

That’s okay. I understand your sentiment perfectly. The only regret I had when the Supreme Court granted equal marriage rights to all was that my own dad wasn’t alive to see it. It would have killed him.

  • John T

It’s kind of terrifying that Charlotte is identified as a “church and banking town”.

  • anne marie in philly

can’t stop the music, nor the love! GO CHARLOTTE GO!

  • it’s nice to see smaller cities get with the Pride fun. i’m old and jaded; i’ve been to enough that are just plastered with corporate pinkwashing, local establishment activist drama, and coat tail hangers-on that sometimes i lose sight of the fact that it really can be a wonderful experience for people. people who never got anything like it at home, people for whom any gay event was as much a security risk as a good time. people who have never seen a Drag Queen or Bull Dyke on a bike in person before.

if i had a lot of money, i’d probably travel to these smaller Prides just as they hit the 100K+ mark. the Joy will be so palpable in those places, people will be farting rainbows. 😉

    • Guest

Charlotte is in the top 20 biggest cities population wise in the country.

  • Octavio

Cheese Louise! Does the Charlotte police department have a guestimate of how many armed defenders of truth plan on showing up to intimidate the crowd?

    • gaymex

I lived in Charlotte for a couple of years…lots of bible thumpers. I ran a retail shop there and one day an employee came to me and said that she felt uncomfortable working with a couple of gay guys that I had hired and that I needed to conform to community standards because she was uncomfortable in the workplace. I, of course, dealt with it immediately. I sometimes wonder what happened to her afterwards.

      • Octavio

I like that story better than I like Fluffy Cat. You can tell to me again if you want. 🙂

  • Chris Larosa

“But woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! FOR YOU SHUT THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IN PEOPLE’S FACES. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter
to go in.” (-Jesus) Matthew 23:13

    “The Spirit
    says clearly that some people will abandon the faith in later times;
they will obey lying spirits and follow the teachings of demons. Such teachings are spread by deceitful liars, whose consciences are dead, as if burnt with a hot iron. SUCH PEOPLE TEACH THAT IT IS WRONG TO MARRY … Everything that God has created is good; nothing is to be rejected…” (-Paul) 1 Timothy 4:1-4

Perhaps these A-holes need to reread these scriptures before they show up with their bullhorns and misguided messages.

  • RobynWatts

Wonder how many of those redshirts will have their Grindr accounts turned on during Pride?

  • Josh

    Praise Jesus!

  • Roy Biv

I’m going to be there. =p

  • KQCA

i pity Michael Brown. He’s going to have a lot of regrets to recount during his last years of life. All this time, he could have come out of the closet and been himself.
So pitiful that this is the only way he can explain his presence at a pride parade.

  • ajchar

Hubby & I go to Charlotte Pride most years, usually just see a smattering of kooks with signs or handing pamphlets. My favorite is the guy with the cross on wheels. It has 2 wheels at the bottom and he rests the crossbar on his shoulder. Have not been there for Mr. Brown’s little demonstrations.

  • BudClark

Why on EARTH do these KKKristofascist FOOLS think that screaming curses at us through bull-horns and frightening our children is going to turn ANYBODY straight?

It’s not, you know. It only contributes to the continued emptying of their hateful “churches.”

If we’re going to “hell” because “god” created us gay, WHY SHOULD *THEY* CARE???
