STUDY: Trump Fans Don’t Spel Gud

Via USA Today:

Fans of Carly Fiorina venting their views on Facebook are far more likely to do so with proper grammar than fans of Donald Trump. A new study by the folks at the grammar-checking app Grammarly concluded that commenters on Fiorina’s Facebook page made an average of 6.3 grammatical and spelling errors per hundred words compared with 12.6 errors per hundred for folks posting on Trump’s page. The grammar used by Ben Carson’s Facebook followers ranks up there near Fiorina’s at 6.6 errors per hundred words, while Rick Perry’s commenters are second worst, at a 12.5 goof rate.

Shocking!

Didn’t know Sarah Palin went on these boards.

  • AtticusP

Now THAT one warrants a “DUH!” label!!!

  • Gustav2

It’s understandable. Ms Fiorina’s fans posted during the Cocktail Hour Debate, then stopped drinking their rose’. On the other hand, Trump’s fans didn’t stop drinking until 11:00 pm EDT and were sobbing into their boilermakers.

  • PLAINTOM

But, but Perry got smart glasses.

      No. That is not real.

I still need photos of the two before i decide.

      This still makes me bellylaugh.

      • Sk3ptic

It’s definitely an epidemic: I’m particularly fond of bail peprs.
P.S. I find it interesting this person knows how to spell “bail.” Probably has a lot of experience with that.

        • vorpal

          …this can’t be real.
Please, someone, tell me that this is a joke.

I see they used Google Translate.

          • vorpal

I don’t even think that that’s the case. I have done lots of to-from translation with Google Translate, and it has resulted in a bit of silliness and ambiguity, but never produced anything that ridiculous.

I think this is someone who misrepresented themselves as being proficient in English and Traditional Chinese, while probably barely knowing a word of either :-).

          • bambinoitaliano

            😛

          • Phil

            Yes, I remember Stranczek’s signs. Real charmer……

That sounds friendly. Do I get to sniff it before I try it? That is very important!

            Not my expertise unfortunately. 🙂

Or that ATLAH Starbucks Latte preacher…

Almost afraid to ask the goof rate for Word Salad Palin’s fans. Full scale deflection?

    • vorpal

Calculating that would require them to possess the ability to operate a pen.

      • Christopher

I wouldn’t even assume that they could figure out how a crayon works.

  • Blake Jordan

And in other shocking news, water is wet!!!

  • Refugay

    Spelling, it’s for the bees.

  • Clive Johnson

I’m half-seriously expecting to see tweets that have the following grammatical structure: ‘Trump no like it’ or ‘Trump win again’.

  • bambinoitaliano

    Here’s a sign for Donald.

    • LonelyLiberal

At least the error is obvious: it should be “Talk American.”

  • Capritaur

I’m sorry, but 6.3% error rate is still unacceptable. The average number of words in a written English sentence is about 15 to 20, and 6.3% error rate means on average an error per sentence.

    • Steven Leahy

It is but some of it like on my computer is a combination of typos and also the auto-correct feature changing words (it usually helps for reckless key strokers like me but sometimes makes it worse), which happens a lot on my Apple products. Maybe we should all learn to proofread better, however.

  • Roy Biv

I’d be interested to know what the error rate is on Clinton and Sander’s page, even Obama’s past pages. Sadly, the link above only measures GOP candidates.

And isn’t it possible that this is true only because Fiorina polls so low that she has less supporters to show their dum?

  • TampaZeke

I’m actually shocked by these numbers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comment from a conservative that didn’t have at least 12.6 grammatical errors for every 20 words.

  • McShane

    Wait… for it.

  • Greg B.

Grammar and spelling are thought control and librul cunspeeraseez.

  • Merv99

    There a bunch of loosers.

  • They don’t smell too cute either…

  • JCF

    OK, I’ll bite: what’s the error-rate on Hillary’s page? On Bernie’s?

  • zhera

Huh. Now I wonder what my average is. Anyone feel like going through some of my comments?

  • James

6.3 mistakes per hundred words?! That’s fucking shocking. Then again I recall reading somewhere that the average American only reads at an 8th grade level, so in itself that rate isn’t surprising, but damn.

    • Steven Leahy

Sometimes when people post online they make errors. Is that just an American issue and indicative of a nationality’s reading level?

      • James

Your response might be an indication of yours, anyway.

        • Steven Leahy

Sometimes I make typos when I type quickly which I correct. Pretty common thing to happen online when people make lots of posts in a short amount of time.

You on the other hand are just an asshole. I’m sure you know that though.

          • James

If you like me so little, why do you keep replying to my posts? More importantly, why do you keep inventing things I didn’t say to argue with? (You missed four commas in your post above, by the way.)

          • Steven Leahy

Actually I had no feelings about you one way or the other – I read most of the threads here and I took exception to a comment you made. I replied because it’s a blog and I have a Disqus account and I can, right? You might want to ask yourself the same question?

Or maybe I did because you made a stupid remark and like many non-Americans visiting this website, you use whatever bait you can find as an opportunity to make anti-American comments?

You might wish to take a look at the direction Old Blighty’s heading in obesity, not to mention math, science and reading skills, before you start talking about Americans – not pretty. Barely a notch better than the US and much worse than most of the rest of the Anglo-sphere.

Missed commas, really? Is that what you’ve stooped to? It’s a blog – not a writing class. I make typos, sometimes autocorrect changes words and sometimes I don’t catch mistakes – big deal.

          • James

You know nothing about me, including my nationality, where I grew up, and where I live, and your claims about non-Americans’ comments on this blog don’t appear to be true as far as I’ve seen. No, you took umbrage to a remark I made about the average American’s reading level and then started trying to argue with me about something I didn’t say. In fact, the statistic that the average American reads at an 8th grade level appears to be true, which you could have easily discovered by simply Googling it. So, again: 6.3 errors per 100 words is shocking, but if the average American only reads at an 8th grade level, it’s not so surprising. That’s the sum total of what I said in the original post you either misunderstood or wilfully misinterpreted.

          • Steven Leahy

I think I have a good idea 🙂 I’ve been around the block (and the world for that matter) a few times, and have met your kind before. You’re common as dirt. BTW, I never denied it was true about the 8th grade thing, but what was your fucking point in bringing it up? Education especially among younger generations is a big issue in LOTS of countries, including (glaringly) yours. So mind your own house, and get off your high horse with your unnecessary remarks targeting nationalities of people.

          • James

If you don’t understand what the fucking point was, I can’t help you any further.

          • Steven Leahy

            Piss off…

      • TexasBoy

My mistakes are generally caused by my not being able to type worth a flip. What’s worse than simple grammar goofs are those folks that insist on typing in ALL CAPS or in all lower case with no discernible sentence or paragraph structure.

        • Steven Leahy

          Exactly – mine too.
