REPORT: Married Michigan State Rep Leaked Gay Hooker Scandal About Himself To Hide Affair With Fellow Married Rep

Back in June, I reported that Michigan Tea Party state reps Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat had introduced a trio of anti-gay marriage bills, two of which would have outlawed all civil marriages. Under their proposed bills, only “a minister of the Gospel, cleric, or religious practitioner” would be allowed to issue marriage licenses and perform weddings. Today the Detroit News has a juicy follow-up:

State Rep. Todd Courser planned the distribution of a fictional email alleging he had sex with a male prostitute in a bid to conceal his relationship with Rep. Cindy Gamrat, according to audio recordings obtained by The Detroit News. Courser, a Lapeer Republican, said on one recording the email was designed to create “a complete smear campaign” of exaggerated, false claims about him and Gamrat so a public revelation about the legislators’ relationship would seem “mild by comparison.” Interviews with former House employees and the recordings show freshman lawmakers Courser and Gamrat, R-Plainwell, used their taxpayer-funded offices to maintain and cover up their relationship. Courser, 43, and Gamrat, 42, rose from the ranks of tea party activism, battled establishment Republicans to win seats in the House last year and formed their own legislative coalition.

Both reps are opposite-married with three children each. From Gamrat’s campaign page: “Our nation was built upon a Judeo-Christian foundation and has been blessed by the hand of Providence. I will stand STRONG for religious freedom against any attacks that may come it’s way.”

More from the Detroit News:

Written using the pseudonym George Rathburn, the sexually explicit email was received by Republicans on May 20 and 21, the two days following Courser’s meeting with Graham. The missive claimed Courser was removed from the House GOP caucus after being caught having “paid male on male sex behind a prominent Lansing night club,” among other claims. During the May 19 meeting, Courser twice read aloud portions of a draft email to Graham. Most of the sentences Courser recited match copies of the email sent to Republicans and obtained by The News. “Nobody’s gonna believe any of that,” Graham said about the draft email. “Correct,” said Courser, who then added: “No, they’ll believe some of it. They’ll believe some of it.” Courser does not explicitly say he wrote the letter, only telling Graham “it’s already written” and that Gamrat “agreed” with sending it.

Michigan Republicans are really messed up.

Yeah. Unlike Republicans from the other states. /s

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

    • LovesIrony

I said those exact words waiting for discus to load,

    • Todd20036

Seriously. No Hollywood producer would use this in a movie because it’s too unbelievable

      • lymis

Actually a good hollywood producer would use it – but it would be a multilayered coverup of something even darker that they were REALLY trying to hide. Satanic cults or alien invasion. Or Nazis.

It could be the next Rosemary’s Baby!

      • Nic Peterson

The true test of their tea bagging hypocrisy would be if they used contraception covered by Obamacare.

        Let’s hope so.

  • Ninja0980

And once again, we see people who scream the most about family values are the biggest hypocrites.
I’m sure we’ll see statements soon about how Jeebus has forgiven them so it’s all okay.

  • medaka

The missive claimed Courser was removed from the House GOP caucus after being caught having “paid male on male sex behind a prominent Lansing night club,”

Honey if you’re going to lie and say you paid for it, you should at least lie and say you got a room at the Motel 6.

    • Gustav2

In Teavangelical land, gay sex never is elevated to the level of a Motel 6.

      • medaka

Yeah, I guess for them airport bathrooms are classy.

        • Reality.Bites

He’s a STATE rep. If you’re not in Congress what plausible reason would you have for being caught in an airport? 😉

      • popebuck1

The thrill of possible arrest and the smell of truck stop restrooms – to these guys, that’s what sex is all about.

        • rusty57

Well, it’s certainly sex as they know it.

    • clay

He believes his own propaganda that being gay is only about the sex, so the only thing that makes a gay nightclub gay, would be gay sex. The only thing that would make a coffeeshop gay would be the semen lattes. The only thing that makes a . . . wait, where is the gay florist putting those stems!

      • SJWinCMH

        Makes the buds burst open.

  • Steven Leahy

NOW I’ve heard it all. Guess we’ve come further than I thought when a supposed hetero uses a homo affair to hide a hetero one

    • Ninja0980

I think the logic was when the one story was discredited, the real one about the affair would be too.
      Didn’t work though.

    • JT

Funny that. He seemed confident they wouldn’t believe the made up story so maybe it was just the thought that it would be a “story” that would help cast doubt on the other one.

      • Stev84

That doesn’t make any sense even. As if there haven’t been dozens of cases of virulently anti-gay politicians and preachers caught having gay sex.

        • JT

Yes it does since what I’m saying takes the the above account as given, that the story was made up. If you don’t think the he leaked the story about himself, then OK. But that’s not what I’m saying.

          • Stev84

I do think he leaked it. I just don’t get why he thought it wouldn’t be believed. I guess one could assume that it wouldn’t be believed by Republicans/evangelicals who’d be quick to make all kinds of excuses for one of their own.

          • JT

Steve, I think he may have such a big head that he thinks no one could possibly believe he was gay. There are people like that.

        • Friday

It’s not like Teabaggers need their conspiracy thinking to *make* sense.

      • Fyva Prold

Plot twist: he was also having a real homo affair.
Actually, he looks like he could have.

        • JT

Now that would be funny: someone who thinks he’s never going to be thought gay who leaks something to cover up a hetero affair when he’s double dipping.

    • MDB

Won’t someone please think of the six children ??? Can you imagine having either of these two for parents ??? ZOIKS !!!!!!!!

  • MarkOH

Well, color me surprised. A gay hater, who tries to block rights for his fellow citizens (all in the name of decency I am sure) is a low down, sleaze ball cheat. Wonder how his 4 children think of him now? A liar and a cheat.

I don’t get it. Since he clearly fantasizes about hiring gay prostitutes, why doesn’t he just hire a gay prostitute? He can probably still have his hetero affair on the side. Some Republican legislators just make life as difficult for themselves as they try to make it for the rest of us, I swear!

  • Friday

    So… Hypocritically-bigoted, dishonest, and *not terribly-bright* …. It’s the Teapublican trifecta. 🙂

  • lymis

My first thought was, “Who the hell records this sort of thing?” On reading the linked story, it turns out that this Nimrod didn’t even plan to send out his own secret fake smear campaign letters, but ordered an aide to do it. It’s the aide who recorded the conversation. And, if I read the article right, was fired after refusing to send out the messages.

How could that possibly go wrong?

    • popebuck1

I hadn’t heard that detail! As usual, their contempt for the “little people” comes back to bite them in the ass. “You there – nobody #456. Please do this illegal thing, so I can just throw you under the bus if I’m found out. What else are you people here for?”

I’m not sure there is a prescripted role for the Cuckolded Husband in this. Normally, his job would be to beat the shit out of the bastard who soiled his wife. He’s supposed to forgive his wife, but not the dude who corrupted her. That could be an interesting twist in this.

This is the first time I’ve seen the term “opposite-married” And had to think for a moment. What is opposite-married? Oh same-sex married but it’s just marriage. Hetero marriage, nope just marriage. Well isn’t opposite-married opposite of true marriage? No marriage is marriage now. Opposite sex married. Ok, got it. It all happened within five seconds but I had to sort it all out.
Our lexicon, terms and speech are changing and it will take everybody a little time to get used to seeing and using it.

  • penpal

Marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman who are married to other people and fuck on a conference table late at night after a long day of crafting gay-hate legislation. It’s in the bible, people.

  • JustSayin’

Is there a gay church there? Can they be convinced to picket these clowns offices with signs quoting Leviticus? That would be hilarious to see the rainbow coalition throwing the haters signage back at them

  • Ben in Oakland

Maybe somebody who’s at more coffee then I have this morning can explain this to me. I frankly don’t get it. What was the point of pretending to have sex with a gay prostitute in order to hide a real affair with a coworker? Couldn’t they think of anything more intelligent to do? Did they think that is pretending to be gay would somehow make it all better?

Please, someone explain this to me!

    • tristram

He had obviously done a lot of thinking about the ‘having sex with a gay prostitute’ scenario.

      • Ben in Oakland

Well, yes! But that still doesn’t explain the nature of the story, and why they thought it would be a good idea. That’s what I want the explanation for.

        • Lindoro Almaviva

easy. If they could create a smear campaign and blame people from the left, or even people from their own party they thought they could go on with the affair; or at least sofen the blow up by creating what they thought was a worse possible scenario and then say “it wasn’t all that bad”.

It all boils down to tapping into people’s perceived homophobia. Because they believe the worse thing you can call a man is being gay, they thought people would be appalled about it and either have pity or ridicule them. Either way they felt they won because their loyalists would defend them to the end of the earth and those who attack them would be used as scapegoats in the “smear campaign”

What they expected was to create such a frenzy that when the was revealed, the loyalists would either think “well, good, he was not gay after all; thank God! What’s a little affair these days?” but also “See? all those leftist bullies and those RINOS created this because they hate him. Look at the poor man. this was all a conspiracy to bring him down.”

This whole thing makes even more sense when looked from the Duggar world lens: “he made a mistake, he asked God for forgiveness, why are you all STILL obsessing over this; why aren’t you able to move on as we all did because Jesus and forgiveness? See, we are such victims here. Nobody likes us, nobody understands us.”

          • Ben in Oakland

Thank you. I think I’m pretty intelligent, but the convolutions of these thoughts made absolutely no sense. They still don’t, not in a sensible world. But at least I get it now.

          • Ben in Oakland

Thanks. I got it. It was so beyond rational to me that I couldn’t figure out why they Might think think this was a good idea. But your explanation, and those of the others, make perfect sense…

If you don’t mind the fact that it’s still beyond rational.

The idea was to spread an entirely false and easily disprovable story, which he would make sure was taken up by the (local) media……after a couple of days he would disprove the ficticious story probably blaming “icky gays” for trying to sabotage his career and marriage, potentially hint at legal action & so as soon as the real scandal surfaces 1) no one would believe it and 2) the media would not touch it…….

Exactly. Never do we hear about “the hand of” any other city in R.I. than Providence…come to think of it, Providence gets more attention in religious circles than any other U.S. city. Maybe that’s why it had its own dramady on NBC for years. Hmmmm.
Apparently, in xtian circles, Providence is the Marcia, Marcia, Marcia of America.

Another classic case of those who yell the loudest are the worst offenders.

  • Traxley Launderette

This has been yet another week of joy in an already giddy summer.

All we need here in Michigan now is for former AFA spokeswhore Gary Glenn — now state representative Glenn (R -Midland ) — to get caught doing something reprehensible (the mind boggles at the possibilities ).

And in other semi-related news, my little town pf Grand Rapids just elected its first female mayor ever. She’s been pro-equality, pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-body cams, pro-public education, and was instrumental in helping get weed decriminalized three years ago. She’s also worked to improve our mass transit system. We are no longer the bastion of Calvinism we used to be. Things are looking better in this part of Michigan!

    • Oh’behr

Wow. Congratulations Grand Rapids. That’s a huge change.

      • Traxley Launderette

Thanks! The city itself, in which I live, has become more and more open-minded over the last 25 years. The suburbs continue to be the refuge of the religious and the socially conservative, but it’s different inside the city limits. Funny, though. Downtown, with the new, huge farmers’ market, the concert venues, clubs, bars, restaurants, rehabilitated parks, new art museum, and dozens of re-purposed historic buildings is the magnet drawing in new talent and pride of place. Not the outlying areas with their sprawling developments of McMansions. The growth is here, the ideas and change keep coming.

  • e jerry powell

An interesting way of going about it, I guess.

  • sword

Why did Courser and Gamrat leave such a large group of people to issue marriage licenses and conduct marriages? By their logic, only ultra-right radical Teapotters should be allowed to decide. Just like the GOP would determine which people will be allowed to vote.

  • Robert Conner

Now we at least know why Courser wears glasses. You would would to if you’d banged crazy eyes Gamrat. Come to think of it, you’d probably be on dialysis.

  • Jim

Two potatoes could have cooked up a smarter scheme than this absurd attempt at distraction. How did these two dummies ever get elected?

  • rusty57

    Here’s what I’m puzzled by.
It seems like disseminating a false story that can be discredited so that when the real truth comes out about your adulterous fornication you can claim it’s another fabrication by your political enemies might, possibly, work. What seems odd is that such a fine upstanding christian like Todd would even think to introduce a homosexual component to the story. He and his fornicating adulteress, married, republican, girlfriend think so much of their faith that they wanted to introduce legislation to only allow clergy to perform marriages. Because only god can join two opposite gender people together, forever and ever amen.
I’m wondering if maybe the “bi-sexual porn addicted deviant” and a “gun toting bible thumping cock sucking freak.” phrases might reveal a side of Todd’s psyche he’s struggling to keep hidden, especially from himself.
    Anyway, just wondering out loud.
