Some Changes Are Coming To JMG

After more than 11 years on the Google, late this weekend this here website thingy will migrate to WordPress and will be hosted on JoeMyGod.com, which I’ve owned for a decade and has been redirecting to this Blogspot address. Things won’t look very different on your end, but you should be pleased by a much zippier site load, added social media interactivity, and more searchable archives. The biggest visible change will be fewer posts on the main page with a “next page” clicky-thing at the bottom. And of course, you’ll want to bookmark the new URL.  There may be a glitch or two during the change and we’ll likely be making more tweaks in the coming weeks. I’ll be participating in the comments of this post to answer any questions and tell you a bit more.

  • JoeMyGod

Of importance to international readers is that the change to JoeMyGod.com means that those outside with US will no longer be plagued with Blogger’s bizarre and intermittent “No Country Redirect” nonsense. I’ve gotten complaints about this for years and finally saw it myself when I was in London last month.

    • Blake Mason

Thanks Joe. I find that the site crashes on my iPad a lot. Think this will improve also?

      • Joe in PA

I came here to post just that. Happens to me almost whenever I use the iPad. So, onward and upwards!

        • Harley

Me too. I have to relaunch my browser 5 times for every article I read. Frustrating.

      • JoeMyGod

I’m told that the new template will be far more friendly to Macs and mobile devices. There will surely be bugs at the beginning but the tech guys will handle them as they arise.

        • ZhyKitty

Congrats on the move, Joe! : )
As always, thank you for all you do!!

        • Oh thank goodness. I swear, this crashes my phone every time I try to load it.

        • Schlukitz

I’ve been following your blog since it’s inception on an iPhone, MacBookPro and a Mac Mini and have never had a problem.

I don’t own an iPad, so I cannot speak for that. Don’t see much point in getting one with all the Apple devices I already own. Hee hee

        • It’s not your content or formatting that causes problems for mobile and Mac users, Joe. It’s all this Flash crap and the billions of ads that Google litters your site with.
All of that eats bandwidth, and since Apple devices are bandwidth pigs they will crash more when attempting to constantly update the content.

          • MikeBoston

I agree, the site takes forever to load for me at the office as the flash and assorted advertising seems to bog it down tremendously. It inevitably crashes my iPad if I use Safari, but works fine on Chrome for iPad

          • Mark

Mommie – I’m on Windows7. I had to disable Flash in FF to stop sucking the bandwidth. It dropped my usage (metered service) by almost 40% – which means I get to spend more time here at JMG!!

Can Flash be selectively turned on/off with Apple products?

          • Jim in TO

Flash is not included by default on any Apple products. You have to go through huge hoops to get it to run (Google it). Flash is dying technology and will be gone from the internet completely in a few short years due to all the security issues with Flash.

          • People4Humanity
          • John T

There is a Flash-blocker extension for Chrome (I think for Firefox too?) called Flashcontrol. It disables Flash everywhere unless you click a button to enable it for a specific page or site. Makes things load way faster, plus I keep hearing about how Flash has security flaws and should be avoided.

          • What Jim said per Flash/Apple. And I agree with him about Flash. It’s a dying technology, and will be completely replaced once more Web sites adopt HTML5 as their format.

The problem with Flash in Mozilla products is that Mozilla is strictly adherent to Open Source and the GNU licensing regulations.

Flash is owned by Adobe, and is a proprietary product. Adobe will not share the source code for Flash without demanding a lot of control over how Mozilla implements it in their browsers. As that would violate Open Source principles and the GNU licensing regulations, Mozilla won’t allow it. And the stand-off results in Flash performing badly in Firefox and Firefox mobile.

          • People4Humanity

Thank you for man’splainin’ that to me.

        • Menergy

that’s good — on my iPad the site/page crashes, “a repeated problem occurred” statement comes up, reload, crash. Not the case on my iMac though, not on my Droid phone using Chrome — so the cause seems evasive (to me at least, not being a techie). I’m a faithful reader every day, several times a day, and count of the stupendous comments and the coverage, and the great embarrassing photos of the jerks you report about! Thanks a million!

      • Happens on my iPad mini a TON! I installed the Dolphin browser as one of the kind posters suggested here and it was good for a while, but this morning JMG crashed Dolphin and Safari completely. I hope this change resolves that!

        • Steverino

Yep. Frequent crashes, suddenly reloading web page (often when in the midst of making a comment, grr…), but one glitch that always amuses me is on the main page, when an attached video clip is from some prior posting, e.g., one of Matt Baume’s marriage clips appearing as a Brian Brown clip, instead.
          : )

          • ZhyKitty

I get that too, then you have to refresh to fix it.

          • Gustav2

Yes! Thought it was my first gen used iPad.

          • StraightGrandmother

OMG that re-loading of the web page on the iPad in Safari, I get that from time to time & it is so annoying.

Or when you think it is finally loaded but it won’t let you expand, to get the font bigger.

      • John Cannaday

So glad to hear this! I thought my Ipad was haunted. While I use my ipad alot, only this site has consistently caused crashes and made me say poopy words. So I’m thrilled if your migration will hopefully stop this little piece of craziness.

    • bambinoitaliano

On my phone loading the main page is not an issue, it’s clicking on a specific article that takes forever to load. Hopefully the changes will fix that issue.

    • 2amor

      Now that is great news!!

    • Circle Thomas

YES! Finally, I can see the site on vacation.

    • People4Humanity

Another good reason to get the heck outta Dodge every now & then.

  • VodkaAndPolitics

This is wonderful news. I work in publishing too, and know how scary a website migration can be. Make sure you take your developers out for some cold ones when all is said and done!

  • JoeMyGod

The archives and the blogroll will be moved off the main page and will be on their own pages.

    • Harry Underwood

Question: will the comments from post-Disqus posts be kept over on the new site? And will the pre-Disqus comments ever be recoverable?

  • ZnSD

    Awesome! Congratulations!

  • another_steve

Oh please, Joe. Tell me it won’t be complicated. :-/

I’m old and not technologically with-it.

I still use a VCR and my microwave oven is, to this day, a complete mystery to me.

    • VodkaAndPolitics

Sounds like the changes are mostly “behind the scenes,” so you should be good, Steve.

    • Nah this will be easy for Joe, and it will look a heck of a lot better too!

    • ErikDC

Awwww. If you made it here, you don’t give yourself enough credit.

When all else fails, just employ the strategy I’ve used since I was a toddler — keep pressing buttons until something happens. Eventually you’ll get it to work. =)

      • zhera
        • ZhyKitty

          LMAO!

Worthwhile for people of all ages: NOVA’s Cybersecurity Lab
          http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/labs/lab/cyber/

It includes a game (“youโ€™ll defend a company that is the target of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks… Youโ€™ll crack passwords, craft code, and defeat malicious hackers”), video quizzes (“Discover why the Internet is insecure… and what motivates hackers to hack. And learn why you should be careful about what you post online”), and Meet the Experts (“Find out how experts working in cybersecurity started out, get a sense of what a typical day in their job looks like, and see what they recommend to those who want to follow in their footsteps”).

      • Jonty Coppersmith

Eventually you’ll get it to work or cause smoke to start coming out.

        • Balderdashing

Yeah, trying to resolve these technological “conveniences” often makes my brain overheat, too.

        • Furface

There’s not s’posed to be smoke? Oh dear!

          • Jonty Coppersmith

            LOL!

          • GC

Yeah, we only think computers run on electricity. They actually run on magic smoke. If you let the smoke out, they stop working.

I’m sure many of the members here are technically savvy to walk you through the steps. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Balderdashing

Is that like “Let me know if you don’t receive this email.”

        • bambinoitaliano

Nah we tweet under 140 characters.

          • Balderdashing

Showing my age again. “Why, when I was your age, we had to walk to the car and back, and you didn’t hear me complaining!”

          • bambinoitaliano

Because during your era, boombox was a thing.

          • Balderdashing

You whippersnappers have no sense of history. In my era, the inventor of boombox was drafting his ideas on an Etch-a-Sketch.

          • bambinoitaliano

That’s not that old we got those apps.

          • Balderdashing

All right, in my era, we knew how to use commas.

          • JW Swift

…and the difference between “your” and “you’re”… (and a number of other homonyms, for that matter).

          • bambinoitaliano

We live in cyberspace. Reading and writing skills are not require. Actually I’m old school. The kids these days use emoticons.

          • Balderdashing

I’m not up on the new drugs.

          • bambinoitaliano

We don’t do drugs. Just prescriptions.

“I’m a Nigerian Prince who has $5 billion trapped in a remote Nigerian bank….”

    • Gustav2

The two us will just have to use our walkers to stand up and shuffle through the new stuff. It won’t be that bad.

JoeMyGod.com no ‘blogspot’ in there now.

    • Jonty Coppersmith

Total Luddite here too Steve. I always get Mike to help me since he’s the technology whiz around here. Just the other day the wireless scanner had lost its sync with the computer, and there I was scratching my head, Miiiiike.

      • BearEyes

Sounds like my hubby. I fondly call him my “Mr. Technology”.
He’s not very fond of me calling him that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • Jonty Coppersmith

I bet hubby forgets all about the Mr. Technology moniker when you pay him back for services rendered in a very special way. I frequently tell Mike that I don’t know what I’d do without him and not just for his computer help.

          • BearEyes

            ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • KP

    “Zippier site load.”

On first pass I read that too quickly.

    • There are some mornings I could use a zippier site load. Oy!

  • Rene Salinas

Will it have as many advertisers? It takes forever to load.

    • JoeMyGod

Flash banners REALLY slow down the Blogger template. That issue should go away and is a big part of the reason for this change.

      • Rene Salinas

        Awesome. Thanks so much Joe.

      • Lumpy Gaga

        Yay!

    • VodkaAndPolitics

Argh! I hate when people complain about advertisements! Advertisers are the people who make sure we get this incredible content free of charge, and Joe gets to eat. You know, I was watching my favorite show last night, and they had the nerve to interupt it every 10 minutes for 3 to five minutes at a time!

      • Balderdashing

Ads are a major reason I stopped watching television entirely. If it doesn’t show up on YouTube or on a DVD set at the library, I don’t bother. I’m sick of being exploited, and am happy to exploit megacorporations in return without giving them my time suffering through their annoyvertising.

        • ZhyKitty

I switched to torrents and happily watch everything I can’t afford on cable for free, without advertizements.
Online there is addblock plus, which you can turn off on your favorite sites to make sure they make money, but which keeps the rest of your browsing ad free.
          I really love it.

          • Schlukitz

Love Adblock for the sites that really piss me off like Gay.com, Queerty and Towelroad, WorldNetDaily, Breibart, BarbWire, etc., etc.

          • ZhyKitty

Exactly. If I don’t care about the person behind the content, I leave it on!

          • Lumpy Gaga

There have been several drive-bys planted by ad networks. Regrettably, I leave ABP on for everybody. No matter how much you love the host, or how savvy they are, you’re only as secure as the weakest third-party link.

          • Jonty Coppersmith

Is Torrents legal? Do you get viruses from the downloads?

          • ZhyKitty

Legal-ish and no, never. I’ve never gotten malware or gotten caught because I know how to find content that is 100% reliable. Happy to give instructions to anyone who wants to learn. So easy, a child could (and they do) do it! : )

        • Schlukitz

          Amen.

I cut the cable and the land-based phone about six months ago and have never regretted it. And I am saving over $120 per month to boot.

I no longer have to listen to the fucking phone ringing off the hook all day and evening with marketing calls, spend a half hour each day listening to phone messages that tell me I will loose my job my home and my wife/husband if I do not return the call pronto, or put up with screaming commercials advertising shit I am not in the least bit interested in purchasing. Nail polish, blush, mascara and vaginal products are not my thing as a male. ;-0

I do not have to rush home to catch a flick at a designated hour and I stream 2 movies per evening on Netflix and Amazon Prime without interruption and I am as happy as a hog in slops.

It’s a good feeling regaining control over my life once again. ๐Ÿ™‚

          • Jonty Coppersmith

I know. We haven’t had a landline phone for years. The cable bill is back up to $180 per month, and I’m very tempted to just cancel the cable and keep the broadband.

          • Schlukitz

Yep yep. They just keep raising the monthly fees without end.

That is precisely what I did with Verizon.

Present monthly charge for 30G service = $59.95 per month.

      • Schlukitz

I can understand watching commercials if one is watching “broadcast” tv, since there is no monthly fee involved. Someone has to pick up the tab.

When millions are paying $120 a month or more for cable and Internet, however, then having to watch commercials is a whole ‘nuther story and an insult to common sense.

I fail to see why we should pay twice to see the same shit one can watch for free on broadcast TV.

  • With so many old favorites vanishing, or with their content changing so that they’re really not the same destination at all, my heart sank – how wonderful, then, to know that it’s essentially a matter of location (location, location).

An ongoing Bravo, as always, dear JMG, for the essential work that you do.

  • JoeMyGod

The biggest change for readers and the one I resisted the most is that posts will no longer be readable in full on the main page. Virtually no news aggregation site has done that for years, but my back end team (hah!) advises that it’s the only way to go.

    • bkmn

Your back end team = your cat?

      • Roger

Be careful young man – Shelley has a PHD in sleeping at the keyboards (all cats do) and can manage to remotely change your entire porn library into cat pictures… Shelley will not be mocked!

        • Balderdashing

          Are they sexy cat pictures?

          • zhera

Only if hairy pussies is your kink.

          • Balderdashing

It’s the hairless ones that creep me out.

          • zhera

            Agreed!

          • B Snow

            See above. You’re welcome. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • B Snow

No, they’re cute!! This should help you sleep at night…. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • zhera

            I will never sleep again.

          • JT

Mrs. Slocumbe thanks you to leave her pussy out of this.

          • BearEyes

and she is unanimous in that!

          • JT
          • GC

“Would you like to pet my pussy?”
            “Sure, move the cat.”

(Not an exchange between Johnny Carson and Zsa Zsa Gabor: http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/zsazsa.asp )

          • Roger

EVERY cat picture is sexy… meowwwww…

      • And speaking of Shelley, we haven’t seen her pretty face for ages. I miss her and hope she’s well.

    • BearEyes

I’m glad you resisted that as I appreciated the full article to read. Headlines (or partial articles) are just meant to be click-bait and can sometimes be a waste of time.

      • Balderdashing

I’ll appreciate the change, since the mounds of embedded media often causes my browser to become unresponsiveโ€”can’t switch to another page while the extraneous stuff loads. At one point, I would only follow on Twitter, since the links there would only open the relevant stories.

This may also mean that I don’t have to go to Discus in order to see who’s up- or down-voted comments. For some bizarre reason, if I’ve logged in, hovering over the count no longer works. (Lots of other freakish behavior with Discus. Is it coming along, too?)

        • Pete N SFO

When I get the ‘unresponsive’ message, I’ll often do a security scan & invariably there’s a PUP program running in the background. Maybe this will stop that.

      • JoeMyGod

I agree, but full posts often contain video and photo embeds that slow the front page load. You’ll have to click an extra time to open an individual post, which I hate hate hate, but it can’t be helped.

        • ZhyKitty

I won’t mind… I have always had the same issue as balderdashing with my browser becoming frozen while the front page loads. If that won’t happen anymore, so much the better, though, still wanting to have our cake and eat it too, I’ll also miss the full articles being there. lol
Your page is always open in a tab though, no matter what else is going on, so whatever you do with the blog, most of us will probably just be thrilled to still be along for the ride!

        • Jack M.

So now, instead of headlines like “Marriage Equality Wins At SCOTUS” or “Brian Brown Has the SCOTUS Sadz” it’s going to be “You Won’t Believe What Just Happened at SCOTUS!” and “This Press Release From Brian Brown Will Amaze You!”

          • JoeMyGod

UGH. I promise not to do that. I will have to change my headline style on occasion but I’ll try to maintain the usual JMG-level snark.

          • GC

Thank you in advance for resisting the all-too-common practice of uninformative teasers.

          • YakHerder

“You’ll never guess which orifice Rick Santorum is mad about now!”

        • John30013

Since you have to open the articles to read the comments anyway, I don’t see this as much of a burden.

As long as the mobile version isn’t like that horror over at Towleroad, I’ll be a happy flying monkey ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Sk3ptic

Shoot. That’s one reason I’ve almost completely abandoned Towleroad. That and all the trolls who haven’t gone away.

      • T.

I know… I stopped visiting Towleroad after the horrendous change… I’m a little worried that this doesn’t bode well. I could handle the fewer stories before a “next” page, but the idea of having to click on each individual story is frustrating and as much as I love this site, that means I’ll probably just subconsciously avoid checking it habitually like I do now. Change sucks. ๐Ÿ™ Good luck though!

    • StraightGrandmother

As long as you have not selected a color scheme of a black background with a white font, I’ll be happy. I hated that at Towle Road.

      • Roger

But SGM, on the more functional end of the design process, black (or at least dark) backgrounds use less energy wich is a big need in this smartphone days. The trick to make a dark background is to reduce the contrast with the type make it light to medium gray instead of bright white. Works like a charm.

        • StraightGrandmother

          No. Just no.

  • Congrats Joe and you will not have to be in fear of Google Blogger rating you adult this way. They have it out for all blogs with LGBT content it seems. Even a photo of a hot guy with his shirt off could trigger a review by them. And it is going to look SO much better!

  • BearEyes

    Zippy is always welcome.
Does that mean you’re getting rid of the script on here that hangs sometimes?
Searchable archives will definitely be welcome.

  • JGSRELP

How does this change your security? Is WordPress easier to hack? I know you’ve had some security issues before and had relative safety with Blogger, I hope you have the same with WP.

    • JoeMyGod

The relative safety of living on the almost unhackable Google was the main reason I stayed all these years. But I’m confident that the security measures now available on WordPress are quite strong.

      • JGSRELP

Excellent! Good to hear, I love when you cant get hacked. I sure it really pisses off those assholes! lol

Keep up the good work Joe!

    • Christo

Thanks for asking. That was my question as well.

  • Mike

Yay Joe! I can’t wait….I come here many times in a day and sometimes it feels like a guilty pleasure instead of the must-read site they it is. The blogspot platform makes JMG such a memory hog (RAM & downloaded MB—minimum of 10-15 MB per page)….often taking forever to load and crashing my devices.

I look forward to JMG-lite (not content, just fewer giga-mega-byty things that should make it more enjoyable.)

    Good luck with the transition!

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Same here. My Mac desktop handles the current site fine, (never a problem) but my Kindle Fire frequently hangs on this site, especially when I am in a comments section. My Android device has an occasional problem. Hopefully, all these little problems will disappear with the transition.

      • Gustav2

Might help when I am banished to my rec room with the iPad.

      • BearEyes

I have the same issue on my Kindle. Silk sucks as a browser.

  • JoeMyGod

Another change will be direct Facebook and Twitter links for each individual post. Those links would often crash this Google template and I had to remove them last year after much frustration.

    • StraightGrandmother

That’ll be good. I will be able to finish reading the story and then Tweet it out right from your website.

  • bkmn

Already set up the new link on my desktop!

  • Jim Maloney

I’ve not found a way to search for posts that fall off the first page. It’s unfortunate if I’m unable to read them before they fall off. I think there used to be an archive section off to the left, but I haven’t seen it for months. Even when it was there it didn’t reliably work for me.

Looking forward to an improved archive system. Thanks.

    • Balderdashing

If you click on the last entry in the blogroll, the new page will show the next set of older entries. I would often chain back like this.

      • ColdCountry

Yeah, but it was a pretty frustrating way to do it if you’d been away for a week or so.

  • Necessitas

I just hope WordPress renders OK in older browsers. When Towelroad changed their site, it would no longer render correctly in the last version of Firefox I can run on my old computer. No hope of getting a new one either.

New and improved often seems to actually be ‘non-working’ when it comes to my computer. I’ve quite visiting Towelroad, because I can’t read it with all the overlapping text issues.

    • I find many WordPress blogs to be gorgeous. Try Opera. It seems to be the best looking browser by far (at least for me), They also do not track your every move like Chrome or Microsoft Edge (new for Windows 10) is blatantly doing. My experience with Firefox is that it is a very complicated browser.

      • Necessitas

I tried it. It seems to have serious problems with cookies. I couldn’t do my opensteetmap work with Opera because it keep bungling the site’s cookies, it was a 10 minute process to delete OSM’s cookies each time I wanted to log in.

I’ve tried them all basically, and none of them have the features that firefox offers through addons.

My real problem here is not browsers or sites, it’s that I’m poor. A new computer would fix my problems, and I’m saving toward one, at my current rate it’ll be about two more years.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

          You need a GoFundMe site!
Do u know any gay people you could refuse service to, and then claim Christian persecution?

          • 2amor

            Now that is funny!!

        • ZhyKitty

I have the same issues (being poor, not being able to upgrade devices to keep up with others) and also adore Firefox above all others. On these older machines, it just seems to be the one browser I have the least trouble with, and I, like you, love the addons that make browsing so much more pleasurable.

Good luck with your computer fund!
I know what it’s like to save and save towards something and then have something you can’t live without break and have to use the money to fix or replace that instead. Fingers and toes crossed for you!

        • Thanks for the feedback. I will check what you are saying out!

    • Steve Teeter

My only problem with Firefox is that most videos on Towleroad won’t play. It tells me a plugin is needed, but won’t tell me which plugin. So I go over to Chrome and it plays just fine.

  • MattM

Hey, at least your willing to make changes unlike some other gay blogs I can think of *cough* towleroad *cough*

    • bambinoitaliano

The afterelton/backlot did the transitioning to NNN yesterday. I am quite wary of the changes there too. They have some good editors there that I follow for years and a great group of people too. But the transitioning in the last few years have lost quite a few good editors and readers as well.

      • B Snow

I found it hard to find stories on The Backlot. AE used to have them come up in order, and I could just scroll down to wherever I’d left off, but TB has them all over the place, they seem to randomly order themselves….I really haven’t been there much since the changeover. I’m hoping this new site will be cleaner (in organization; I’m all for more Briefs Guys in skimpier and/or NSFW briefs. ๐Ÿ™‚ ).

        • bambinoitaliano

Yup as I was saying before clicking on the right article is like playing the old game show of No Whammy, No Whammy, No Whammy. Unfortunately the site has being pawn off from one owner to another like an unwanted foster child.

      • Strepsi

I realized the other day I had forgotten about the Backlot, and I used to go there DAILY when it was AfterElton. You can see by the number of comments how hard that rebranding hit them — a recap of Glee or Teen Wolf would get hundreds of comments, and after the Backlot change, maybe 5 or10.

        • bambinoitaliano

Yup. The slash fan fic competition and After Elton Top 100 Men use to draw a lot of readers to the site. As if someone intend to kill the site but getting rid of It’s most popular features.

    • sherman

Towleroad did a site redesign a couple of months ago, which got rid of the horrid dark background. Unfortunately there is not a straight list of articles anymore. There area couple of columns and the same article can be found in multiple places, effectively at least doubling the amount of headline perusal. I rarely go there anymore.

      • MattM

It took them ten years to do that. And to adopt a commenting system that didn’t allow one deranged troll to post truly vile comments under dozens of name.

        • Lumpy Gaga

Good for that troll’s persistence, at least. Posting comments there required me to unblock scripting from waaaay too many sites. (Still loved the white-on-black look, and the whimsical banners, though.)

      • BearEyes

now they have a horrid white background with very harsh lettering on it.

        • Lumpy Gaga

          SEE?

      • Lumpy Gaga

“Horrid” dark background? Towleroad was a frequent click for me because it was easy on the eyes.

I ::heart::ed that site’s visual design, but it’s barely readable to me now.

  • Gigi

I don’t have any questions. I just wanted thank you for an amazing 11 years. I can’t imagine my life without my husband or JMG. Not necessarily in that order. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • John Cannaday

I totally second that! It’s a regular part of my day! Thanks so much Joe for all your amazing work!

    • OrliJoe in Fla

I’ll third that! I pop in several times a day to see what new shenanigans have developed and I love the threads on here… now, about that semen latte…

    • HZ81

I second, third or fourth those seconds, Joe. Thanks so much for your work and can’t wait to see the new Joe.

    • Matt

I completely agree. I have been checking in (almost hourly) for at least the past 3 years. Please don’t go away Joe! Looking forward to the new site ๐Ÿ˜Š

    • Ninja0980

Likewise, can’t imagine not having the hubby or JMG in my life.

  • Paula

Sounds great! Will we still be posting through Disqus?

    • JoeMyGod

Yes. We’ll still use Disqus and the tech guys will be porting over the comments histories just before we go live. Hopefully we won’t lose too much of your delicious snark. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Paula

Cool! JMG is one of the true highlights of my life.

      • Schlukitz

Oh, I am ever so relived to know that Guest and my detractors can still look-up previous posts of mine to copy and paste and hang-out on the line to “shame” me with. Hee hee

Much luck and success with the new endeavor, Joe. We love and appreciate all that you do for the community.

      • bambinoitaliano

As long as it allow us to post pics and videos on comment section. I think your site is the only gay site that allows to do that. Which add on to the entertainment value immensely. This site is amazing and attract the wittiest and funniest bunch of people I ever encounter. Thank you Joe.

        • JoeMyGod

The photo and video options on Disqus will definitely NOT be changed.

          • Dreaming Vertebrate

Thank the Non-Existent Gawds! I’d really miss BadDog’s and Oikos’s original artwork.

          • GC

And the very apropos photoshops and “fixed it for you”s several people offer!

          • KCMC

            yea!

        • DutchBoy74

I see a lot of original content on here too.
          You all are great.

      • Reasoning101

Oh, good. I hope all the wit ports over, because in addition to your delicious reporting, what makes this site is getting to swim in the snark tank.

  • Jmdintpa

can i still post my nudie pics… wait wrong blog!

  • Gustav2

I do want to thank you for using words like “clicky-thing” so we eldergays can understand. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • bryan

Sounds like an upgrade…. What social media interactivity will there be….

    • Gustav2

A “clicky-thing” to directly post on Facebook, Twitter…?

      • JoeMyGod

        Exactly.

        • Toasterlad

Excellent. That’s what I miss most here.

        • bryan

A thing that flashes down below and helps expose us to the world, the Lenny Kravitz button.

          • KCMC

      • bryan

Good. I like a nice clicky thing.

Will we need to change our RSS feed? Feedly user here ๐Ÿ™‚

    • JoeMyGod

Yes. I’ll be posting new RSS feeds when we launch.

      • DutchBoy74

        Thanks Joe!

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Can we still post by Disqus? I rarely use FB.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Oh great, I see the answer below is affirmative!
(Should have read all the comments.)
      Bad little dino!

      I’ll make big signs!

      • DaddyRay

And make sure to spell them correctly with proper kerning

  • DutchBoy74

I would hope you keep the RSS feed as I use that daily to as a simple way to navigate through the site right when I start up my browser.

I use AdBlock and script blockers because ads and scripts have started to bog down the web to a ridiculous point these days – quite often locking up the OS – , and would not have an issue supporting you through something like Patreon like a number of youtubers have been doing to supplement ad revenue.

Excellent! Maybe Firefox will allow me to load JMG. Now I’m stuck with IE which is slow as a slug.
Crossing fingers for a well behaved transfer and low stress levels for all. โ™ฅ

    • B Snow

JMG loads okay on Firefox for me. But the last time I tried it in Chrome on my tablet, it kept freezing. ๐Ÿ™

    • SockMikey

Firefox Nightly (64bit) also takes forever to think about loading JMG for me.

      Regular Firefox loads very fast.

IE & Chrome work fine for me.

      • zhera

Firefox has been good to me always, until this week. Suddenly it won’t load JMG. And ONLY JMG.
        I don’t like IE. It’s slow and stupid. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I find I need to clear my cache a bit more often with FireFox.

  • Secure

Congrats Joe, and hope it all goes smoothly! I love this site and I’m very glad you weren’t posting to say goodbye!

    • bambinoitaliano

Yeah I was so afraid since I have been dealing with another site that keep changing and transitioning. The good thing is Joe actually own the site. Now we just have to be careful not to make him too famous that some conglomerate would offer him billions of dollars to buy him out ๐Ÿ˜›

      • If someone were to offer Joe billions to buy him out I trust he would have the sense to take the money and retire to wherever he wants!

        • bambinoitaliano

          Sigh, I would too.

        • ClevelandJim

          and start a new blog!

Good News, I hope. Trying to look at JMG on an iPhone can be maddening. Constant page errors, and reloading. But you are so worth it. No one covered our marriage equality struggle better than you. No one. (And I work for one of the Big Three!)

  • JoeMyGod

Oh! An important change for we eldergays will be that quoted text from linked sources will be much larger. (Embiggening block-quoted text on Blogger often borks the template.)

    • Paula

YAY!!!! My eyes appreciate that. Thank You!! Do they still sell those Jitterbug phones with the big keys?

      • GC

The ones that emulate a landline phone, down to having a dial tone that confirms you’re getting service?

Me, I like my regular cell phone, stealthy and silent. When I get a new phone or camera, I usually begin by turning off the key beeps, shutter sound, etc. But to each their own.

(One thing I don’t like about my current phone is that contact entries say “Call Mobile”, “Call Home”, “Send Message”, etc. in LARGE print, and show the numbers underneath in tiny print. If anything, it should be the other way around!)

This is the crashiest site of anything I visit; wordpress seems more stable and up to the minute, so hoping that resolves those issues. JMG will you be sticking to a similar blog-style template or using something more magaziney with featured items (“stickies” in wordpress lingo)?

    • JoeMyGod

The blog-style will largely be the same.

  • StraightSupporter

My feeds are currently pulling from http://joemygod.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default. What changes do I need to make for this update?

    • JoeMyGod

I’ll post the new RSS feeds when we launch on Sunday.

  • Reasoning101

Thank you for always looking out for your audience, Joe, and that includes the technical side of things.

Hopefully the move will also address the issue of having to wait so long to get a complete load, and also the many loads that follow.

  • Being a bear of little brain who always forgets his mental notes to himself, I just updated the URL in my bookmark properties (Firefox) and it’s working fine! Still redirecting to blogger, which I assume will change after the weekend. Or will the blogger address then transfer to joemygod.com for a while?

    • JoeMyGod

The Blogger URL will redirect to JoeMyGod.com after the launch.

  • NZArtist

    Loving you long time.
I’m honoured you allow me into your home. I’m sure I’ll love entryway renovations, and the new curtains and paintings on the walls.
I’m sorry I don’t always remember to remove my shoes when I come in.
I cant imagine the work you put into this place to keep it looking so attractive and tidy. I’m honestly in awe of this place.

  • stuckinthewoods

I’m slightly perplexed because so many commenters reference slowness and loading problems that I’ve never noticed. I don’t use mobile devices so naturally I’ve wondered if they’re seeing something that I don’t, but I never imagined that theirs were less agile than mine. I crank the handle on the side of the box, the letters fall out and I piece them together. It’s faster if I ignore the brightly colored pieces. Offering thanks to Joe for this place and good luck.

Can’t believe it’s been 11 years! I’ve been reading JMG since back in the day when Joe wrote about personal stories and disco trivia. I kind of miss that, but I can’t complain about the blog transitioning into one of the best LGBT news aggregator sites around.

  • Ninja0980

Thank you for an 11 years of JMG.

What about those of us who use RSS to keep up with the site? Do you know yet the location of the new feed that we’ll almost certainly have to put into our RSS readers?

    • Prixator

Finally! I didn’t want to ask a question that was already asked and answered, so I’ve read through over 200 comments to eventually find this.

But, I see no answer. Is the address for the RSS feed changing?

EDIT: I should have read a little further down. The answer is:

“I’ll post the new RSS feeds when we launch on Sunday.”

  • StraightGrandmother

I remember when Joe went t Disques, that really helped in commenting. It is great t be able to give up votes, to bad they took away the down votes though. Disques is a big improvement over his old commenting system.

I didn’t even know they were gone, but the other day I was on a right wing Christian website and I went to post a link to one of your stories, you know your old stuff and they are all gone. They always were on the left hand side. I wanted to find & share a story you had written about your friend who died of AIDS. I hope I will be able to find those stories again on the new site. Your storytelling is really deep and touches people.

    • SockMikey

      StraightGrandmother,

Is this the post you were looking for from Joe?

I Will Hold You Ten Times

      *****

I don’t know how to see down votes of Firefox.

On IE if you right click on the down vote arrow and then choose “inspect element” it will give you a line of code that will include “vote-down count-x”, where x is the number of down votes.

Google Chrome will show you the down votes if you install the “Disqus Downvote Exposure” add-on.

Here’s an example that I just captured using Chrome.

      .

      • GC

Thanks for that tip! Firefox has right-click, “Inspect Element” as well.

        • SockMikey

It still doesn’t show the down vote count on my Firefox, just reinstalled it new.

Nightly (64bit) version of Firefox was taking forever to load the comments on JoeMyGod and showed the Disqus Loader Circle, now going back to regular FireFox is loads comments very quickly.

          ๐Ÿ™‚

          • GC

I just discovered that you have to do it on the blog’s main site, not on a Disqus page showing notifications or a discussion, etc.

  • ExGayTherapyKills

Good job Joe, keep up the good work!

  • josephsinger

In other words Joe My God’s site is going to the shits. WordPress is one big clusterf**k. Always slow and latent. Annoying confirmations that you’ve posted a comment. I absolutely hate any and all wordpress sites. They are all garbage. Please reconsider.

  • I hope you’re going to redirect this page to the new site.

I’ve used WordPress, don’t love it, although I haven’t seen much difference in viewing a site as opposed to posting. But it’s your blood, sweat and tears.

  • Thom Kulesa

    I hope everything goes well!

  • Andrew Joyce

Will the new format still include the pornographic ads on the sidebar which make it impossible to read JMG at work or in public?
