Kate Pierson Gets Married

Via the Daily Mail:

Kate Pierson, co-founder of the new wave party band The B-52s, has married her longtime lover Monica Coleman in Hawaii. The 67-year-old singer/songwriter took to her Facebook page on Tuesday to share photos of her and her new wife with the caption: ‘#itsofficial!’ A series of snaps show the happy couple post-ceremony as they don chic wedding gowns with Pierson’s in pink with a elegant Victorian style. A rep for Pierson told E! News: “The wedding was attended by the entire B-52s band, Sia Furler and husband Erik Anders Lang were the witnesses. Sia performed the song she wrote for the couple Crush Me With You Love on Pierson’s first solo album Guitars and Microphones and was accompanied by the famous Hawaii music group the Lim Family who serenaded the attendees during the event. Fred Schneider made the best man speech.”

Love this!! But “married her longtime lover”?? Really Daily Mail?

    • Sweetie, that’s what we eldergays used to call our partners back in the day.

  • Mark

I’m one of the guys who always gets a tune stuck in his head. Like every 10 minutes or so. I never cared that much for the B52’s – but “Love Shack” is forever etched into my memories.

Ten years ago, my youngest brother was murdered by a crack whore. Yes, he was playing where he shouldn’t have been. At his funeral, his kids played “Love Shack” – the long version. Ya shoulda seen dem faces! LOL!

    • Joe in PA

whohoo! One of my favorite songs! Neighbors of ours have two huge parties every year, lots of music, dancing. This song is featured heavily, in fact they have lights on top of their house that spell out Love Shack.

      🎵…as big as a whale…🎵 … juke box money…🎵

    • Gerry Fisher

I read that they almost scrapped “Love Shack,” because they just couldn’t get it right in the studio. The resulting cut happened when they said, “Let’s just give it one more try….” BAM!

      • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

Lots of stories like that in rock. Mick Jagger hated “Satisfaction” and didn’t want to release it.

  • HeyBudBoston

The B-52s do to get the respect that any other band with one of the top selling albums of all time (Cosmic Thing) and with their history of selling out venues for 30 years would get. They should have been in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame years ago.

    • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

23 of the first 24 inductees were men or all-male bands. I was living in Cleveland at the time, and a lot of people were incensed that the Supremes hadn’t been inducted since they had more #1 hits than the Beatles and basically created the soundtrack of the ’60s.

It’s strange how even something as supposedly unconventional and rebellious as rock’n’roll ends up defaulting to a heterosexual male norm once it gets “officialized”.

      • jmax

I remember Ray Davies accepting some award (maybe induction into the R&R HOF) and saying, “Rock and roll has become respectable. What a drag.”

  • barrixines

Lovely! (Though I am a little disappointed there isn’t more bouffant.)

  • Aman InAmsterdam

Ah… sweet! I still know all the lyrics to their debut album. One of my all-time favourite LPs. Listening to it makes me happy and do silly dances while I sing out of tune.

    • Cuberly

Amen, with the B-52s it’s almost impossible to sit still and listen to them. They scream, get up and dance.

  • JT

Congratulations, Kate and Monica! Much happiness to you both and to Keith and his husband.

  • LovesIrony

Congratulations Kate & Monica. We played Planet Claire & Love Shack at our wedding, yep the B 52S got 2 spots on the best day of my life,

  • anne marie in philly

kate looks FABULOUS for 67! congrats to the happy couple!

    • pablo

Saw them a few years ago in Philly and both Kate and Cindy looked unchanged from the 1980’s. Fred let his grey show but they all displayed the energy of teenagers.

      • anne marie in philly

        LOVE!

  • I am thrilled for Kate, but had no idea Keith was married. Dammit, I was going to divorce my husband for him!!!

  • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

These are the girls of the U S A! Rock it!

  • Gerry Fisher

This item made me smile broadly. I love the B-52s!

    Congrats to the happy couple.

  • robirob

Congrats to the happy couple. Hm, I wonder what kind of cake did they serve at the wedding reception? A pineapple upside down cake or, oh! A devil’s food cake?

Cosmic Thing and Bouncing off the Satellites are two of my most favorite albums of all time.

    • njtopher

Oh, they are both great albums…but “Mesopotamia” has it’s moments, too, including “Cake”. “Satellites” got panned roundly by the music critics, and that’s a shame. It was Ricky Wilson’s last album with the band, recorded while he was in the final throes of AIDS, yet his guitar work kicked some serious ass! I wish Kate and Monica many more happy years together, and it made me grin from ear-to-ear to see this pic of them in Hawaii. Congratulations, you two lovely and lucky gals!!!

  • Cuberly

So happy for her, and talk about a big year. Her first solo album and now her wedding. Congratulations Kate & Monica!

Kate was recently on Sound Opinions. She talked about a lot of the classic B-52s hits, how they where written, what their influences where. If interested here’s the link. Was another one of those going to do chores in the car, but when the interview came on I had to go for a longer drive…..lol….

Many congratulations to two lovely ladies!

  • Octavio

Happy wedded bliss congratulations stuff. Love Shack is El Squeeze’s favorite pop song in the world. It’s on all of his play lists. And there is always an emergency Best of the B-52s CD in the glove compartment — just in case. Oy!

  • GreatLakeSailor

I just saw a vh1 classics concert on the tee vee machine with the B52’s last night. Co-inky-dink? I think not.

  • DasNic

Keith Strickland makes my top five for hottest gay male musicians. I still hold out hope that one day he and I will make beautiful gaybies.

  • e jerry powell

So now we just need to get Fred married off!

  • fuzzybits

Congrats to Kate and Monica! Does she still have the campground in upstate New York?

  • JCF

Mazel Tov! Have a lovely Wedding Night in the Love Shack, ladies. Mwah!
