AUSTRALIA: New Anti-Gay Group Unveils Titanic-Themed Marriage Campaign

SBS reports:

Backed by wealthy businessmen, The Marriage Alliance says it hopes its media campaign will encourage Australians to feel comfortable voicing their concerns about same sex marriage. The ad was unveiled at a launch today along with the campaign slogan “there’s more to it than you think”. The ad starts with a simple drawing that later becomes the tip of an iceberg. “Trying to achieve something big can feel like climbing a mountain,” it states. “It’s time to step back and consider all the issues around same sex marriage. Like how it will affect children or sex education in schools or what rights you could lose.” Ivan Hinton-Teoh the deputy director of Australian Marriage Equality which is in favour of same sex marriage described the ad as a last minute scare campaign. “This kind of desperate, eleventh hour scaremongering has failed to stop the momentum for marriage equality in other countries and it will fail in Australia as well,” he said. “It’s asking to have a conversation start where we’ve been going for ten years.”

So, like the Titanic, the “protect marriage for straight folks” boat is filled with poor planning, arrogance, and hubris? Got it.

    • Mark

      Wasn’t Titanic labeled “unsinkable”?

      • barracks9

Indeed. Just like all those rock-solid straight christiany marriages.

        • Mark

Whatever happened to the couple who said they’d get divorced if equal marriage happens? They’ve been terribly quiet of late…..

      • Well, that label mostly came from the press. As the movie showed, the engineers were fully aware of how untrue it was.

I like the metaphor. Icebergs are natural. Big steel-hulled ships are a human creation and not found in nature.
Yeah, I like where that’s going.

    • MDB

Why try to win peoples hearts and minds with intelligence, facts, or knowledge, when you can use superstition, fear and ignorance ????
Because, THAT is all they have.
      * Interesting notes:
~There were 118,962 marriages registered and 47,638 divorces granted in Australia in 2013.
~ Couples who lived together prior to marriage accounted for 76.6% of all marriages registered in 2013, a decrease from the 77.6% registered in 2012.

      • It’s also notable that three-quarters of marriages in Australia these days are civil marriages performed without, as the saying goes, benefit of clergy.

And that we have Civil Unions — Registered Partnerships in Oz-speak — which really are marriages in all but name. And that “partner” is well on the way to becoming the default term even for people in opposite-sex marriages.

    • JT

Sophie York must have had her head up in some dark place for a long time if she doesn’t know that same sex marriage has been in existence for years in other countries without any bad consequences. That dark place has furnished some of the brown stuff coming out of her mouth.

It never ceases to amaze that these tired old “arguments” keep getting trotted out to “defend” marriage. From where I’m standing there’s not a lot to defend.

    • David Walker

There’s nothing to defend no matter where anyone’s standing. Admittedly it smacks of science, but research might be done on countries who are coming near to ending their first generation of marriage equality. And if they can’t abide college, real, peer-reviewed polls or surveys, maybe The Truly Religious of Australia could ask their European counterparts just how badly those countries have suffered under the onus of marriage equality. It might be an interesting, if ultimately suppressed, report.

      • Gigi

I live in Canada. We’ve had legal same-sex marriage here for more than a decade. We’re doing quite well.

    • Blake Jordan

All you have to do is watch shows like The Bachelor, or the more realistic scripted series Unreal, and see the high subscription of sites like Ashley Madison, to see the “sanctity of heterosexual marriage”

The Titanic is a perfect metaphor for the professional anti-gay hate industry. Bon voyage, bigots.

    • geru

I’m not quite sure what they were thinking with the metaphor here. “Same sex marriage is like an ice berg: if you don’t like them then steer clear of ’em. But if you intend to ram right into it, you’ll crash and sink”? Seems quite accurate actually.

    • McSwagg

Unlike the Titanic, this is not our maiden voyage on the Sea of Equal Marriage. We know where the reefs, shoals, icebergs, and other ‘navigational hazards’ are located. We will steer a ‘true’ course guided by the North Star of Equality.

      Steady as She Goes!!!!

  • Backed by wealthy businessmen, The Marriage Alliance says it hopes its media campaign will encourage Australians to feel comfortable voicing their lies and bigotry about same sex marriage. Because lies and bigotry are all they have.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Yup, that would be Rupert and his cronies, always finding ways to lie, cheat and steal.

    • tristram

Hey – it worked in California – probably has an even better chance in Australia.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    Dear Australian Religidouches,

If you’re concerned, in any way, that marriage equality is detrimental or that it may have any adverse effects, might I suggest the following:

Look beyond your borders to Canada, Spain, Argentina, the Netherlands etc. These nations have had marriage equality for many years, over 10 in some cases. Look to see what “horrors” have occurred regarding freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. Take a gander at how none of the “horrors” you and your American counterparts have predicted, have come to pass.

Simply put mates, calm the fuck down, have a Foster’s and get a grip.

    • And while you’re at it . . .

      • BudClark

        It took me a second.

Religion- There’s more to it than you think. It’s time to step back and consider all the issues around religion. Like how it will effect children or education or what rights you may lose. Consider the historic record of all the death and destruction caused in the name of religion.

    • PeterC

Do not forget how it will affect your bank account. And there is no interest or credits on your account. Just debits.

  • KenDC

The Titanic had just three smoke stacks (funnels) that vented ash from the engines. The fourth did not. Just like their depiction of the mighty ship, Marriage Alliance’s arguments are fanciful.

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

Interesting! What purpose did the fourth funnel serve?

      • KenDC

Some sources say it vented the kitchen. Most sources say it made the ship look for magnificent. Apparently Disney (and other cruise ships) have fake funnels. In one Disney boat, it is a nightclub — great views!

        • Mister Don

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

          Thanks Franck & Ken.
So, … kind of a “Potemkin Funnel”.
          U learn something new everyday!

      • It was mostly decorative, to balance the ship’s silhouette. Though it did serve a secondary purpose as aeration.

      • Stev84

Really big ships then generally had four funnels. Three would have made it look inferior.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

This just reminds me of the story about the woman with three boobs. Turns out one of her funnels was fake, too.

        • And a few years later when three funnels became the fashion, there were three-stackers with the third stack a dummy. The Normandie, for instance.

      • William

        The dog kennels were inside.

    • Blake Jordan

      *at least one

    • Sk3ptic

That’s EXACTLY what they’re so afraid of.

  • ExGayTherapyKills

More anti-gay Christians wasting money and time that could be used for good, like feeding the poor and helping. Marriage is a beautiful thing and we all should be able to marry the ones we love, equally. Have a blessed day.

  • Blake Jordan

Doesn’t marriage equality have over 60% support of the Australian general public, and the only hold up is pretty much Abbott?

Who are these people trying to convince to fight against marriage equality?

  • crankyd

What a bunch of drama queens.

  • MattM

This inherently causes “my heart will go on” to play in one’s head. Seems to be a pretty gay side affect of this campaign.

    • Hue-Man

Many put Celine Dion in the same Blame Canada campaign as “Ted” Rafael Cruz and Justin Bieber.

  • Blake Jordan

    So these wealthy business men…

What laws, that will screw over the general public, are they trying to get passed, and they need the Australian general public to be distracted by anti-LGBT sentiment???

    • The list is a very long one. (see Abbott, Anthony.)

  • motordog

So…I guess a ‘storm’ wasn’t scary enough…let’s try an ICEBURG!! Yeah, that sounds really scary!

I’m surprised they don’t make us into a kaiju and be done with it.

    • Give it a week and we’ll be hearing of the release of “Icebergnado!”

  • bambinoitaliano

What the heck’s wrong with Australia? Where did all these red necks crawl out from? I thought Priscilla Queens of the desert obliterated them already.

  • David in Palm Springs

I had no idea that I lost rights when other people get married. Oh, right. I don’t.

  • dcurlee

That’s a very tasteless ad. Using a horrorific event where so may lost their lives to make their point. Truly disgraceful

  • William

The fourth funnel on the Titanic was a dummy and did not emit smoke. If they can’t get the little details right….

  • Porkie

I know that it’s supposed to be darkly menacing, but I am getting, “Oh thooper I love Ithsqueem!”
Clearly I need to get out more.

    • … apologies if someone posted this already!

      • McSwagg

Congrats!!! You beat me to it.

It’s much more accurate than the one in the advert above.

        • Great minds and sll. .. Yep, very apt illustration. Was the first thing I thought of.

  • rextrek1

and the rightwing fools continue to make themselves look like the idiots hey are…..

  • They’re never going to match this:

  • Steven Leahy

Actually, there’s NOT more to it than you think. Legal equality under civil law, that’s it. Not hard. If you’re not gat it doesn’t affect you, unless you feel your fellow citizens being happy and being treated equally is “affecting” you.

  • Australian Marriage Equality’s gofundme page is here:

All donations, however small, will be gratefully received, and you can donate anonymously if you wish.

  • They’re right. Gay marriage is like a big ice berg, if you got a boatful of hot men, you’re days of partying are swiftly going down. Unless, of course, you have an ‘open’ marriage. Then you probably only got married so you can have a fleet of boats under the same banner, then the gay marriage ice berg is more like an ice sculpture people use to fill their drinks from.

    • BudClark

      • LMAO! Translation for non-crazy people. Marriage will ruin a slutty lifestyle unless you specifically want an ‘open marriage’. An open marriage is just a contract to share assets with benefits, like Polygamy.
