ISRAEL: 16 Year-Old Girl Stabbed At Jerusalem Pride Dies Of Her Wounds

Haaretz reports:

Three days after being critically wounded by an ultra-Orthodox man that went on a stabbing rampage at Jerusalem’s Gay Pride Parade, Shira Banki, a 16-year-old Israeli teen succumbed to her wounds Sunday afternoon. Five other people were wounded in the attack. Police confirmed that the suspected stabber is Yishai Schlissel, a Haredi man from Modiin Ilit who stabbed three participants in the 2005 Gay Pride march. He was recently released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence. Banki was a high-school student from Jerusalem, studying at the Hebrew University High School. She took part in Thursday’s parade to show solidarity with her LGBT friends. She is survived by her parents and three siblings; her family decided to donate her organs.

Shira’s family has issued a statement.

“Our magical Shira was murdered because she was a happy 16-year-old โ€“ full of life and love โ€“ who came to express her support for her friends’ rights to live as they choose. For no good reason and because of evil, stupidity and negligence, the life of our beautiful flower was cut short. Bad things happen to good people, and a very bad thing happened to our amazing girl. The family expresses hope for a less hatred and more tolerance.”

  • BearEyes

    Way too young.
And all due to some evil, psychotic, knife wielding bastard who should never see the light of day again.

    • FAEN

Right? Why the hell was this monster let out after the first time he stabbed people? I’m just glad he didn’t get hold of a gun-makes me shudder to think how many more innocents he would have killed.

      • Lumpy Gaga

        Wouldn’t be kosher.

      • Goodboy

Justice was not served the first time but you can bet they won’t make the same mistake. Plus, there’s the additional “prison justice”. Child killer isn’t exactly a thing you want to known as.

How about: we put all the religiofascists on an island with weaponry as ancient and backward as their ideas, and tell them to have at each other.

          • Lumpy Gaga

            “And oil on the side….”

      • Sk3ptic

I’ve shown this cartoon to so many people in my family…they always respond with, “That’s so Muslim vs. Jew, isn’t it?”
I always point out the caption says “Religion,” not denomination. Then I get a side-eye.

        • JT

And the insignia on the shields indicate it’s Christian vs. Muslim.

          • Sk3ptic

Yep. No one can see how their own religion plays a role in this farce.

    • Goodboy

Hopefully her death will serve a larger purpose though. This was a child who died because of stupid hate.

      • Lumpy Gaga

Hopefully her death will serve a larger purpose though.

Personally (PERSONALLY) I’ve despised larger purposes ever since people started calculating them with the bodies of people dead from AIDS. I’m all, “No dear, they’re just senselessly dead without a plot point. Now go away.”

        • Goodboy

Yes it’s all senseless and I totally agree but people respond better to young pretty people that they relate to better. People like Ryan White to Mathew Sheppard. People can be shallow fucks.

      • BearEyes

hate driven by a fundamentalist orthodoxy. People need to see that madness for what it is.

    • Ireyon

There really isn’t a right age to get stabbed by a violently unstable religious nut though.

Can someone ball up some old testament verses and cram them down his throat please?

  • DaddyRay

This just saddens and sickens me – she was only 16 and such a pretty girl.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

So sad. There to support her friends. How they must feel today.

  • GarySFBCN

Oh the irony that this post follows the post about Scott Lively who motivates people like Yishai Schlissel.

    RIP Shira.

    • ericxdc

Thank you. That was my exact reaction as well.

The juxtaposition of posts where one human being was killed for simply expressing her support for love and equality; while another human being devotes his life equating that the same love and equality with Nazi occupation and to promoting violent rhetoric is… telling.

For anyone who ever questioned how a person can hate so much that he would kill in the name of a so-called “loving god,” reading these two stories back-to-back would help provide the answer.

      • JT

There is no “loving god” in the pantheon of these people. Love is a lure to entrap the vulnerable into their cult of hate.

    • PLAINTOM

Add another piece of evidence to Lively’s court case.

      • Goodboy

Not exactly but these are the kind of brainwashed dumb as fuck followers that lively counts on doing his dirty work.

With Uganda he had a whole nation of them. Yesterday they were worried about witches and today it’s the gay oogy boogey man.

No wonder it’s so freaking easy to get them to drink the koolaide.

    • MattPS

Instead of saying “shit for brains”, we should start saying “Schlissel for brains”…

  • gaymex

Her family’s message was beautiful. My condolences to them.

    • DaddyRay

It certainly was, I don’t know where they find the strength and composure.

    • gaymex

…and then I want to say…Fuck all primitive religions. They need to be wiped from the planet as do all the people who encourage others with their hate.

  • Alpha 50327

And Scott Lively and Todd Starnes dance a little jig.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Not if they have any sense.

      • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

        They don’t, so…
Scott Lively and Todd Starnes dance a little jig.

      • Scott Carpenter

They’ll make it a private dance – don’t want to deal with a PR fallout – but they’ll dance. Heinous slime.

      • FAEN

They don’t because the ‘right’ kind of person was killed so they’ll celebrate while simultaneously screaming murder when cells that haven’t formed get removed from a woman’s body. Hypocrisy is strong with them.

      • Blake Jordan

Well obviously they will probably not announce their happiness about her murder, but they will be happy… SOULLESS MONSTERS!!!

  • Cuberly

    RIP Shira.

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

This is incredibly sad and infuriating. It is a reminder that we must be vigilant in our battle for the rights of LGBTs and our allies worldwide.

  • Ed Burrow

Surely Mr Lively will issue a statement condemning this horrendous attack. right?

    • Johnny Wyeknot

      More like another money beg.

      • Ed Burrow

Ha. I had written Shirley. Then changed it back to surely. But the desire was still there, so I succumbed to it in response to one of Ninja’s posts.

        • Johnny Wyeknot

I know. I saw what you did.

    • ZhyKitty

I went to look at this story on more than one right wing site, and read the comments.
Sadly, there was more than one person who felt that this little girl got what she deserved – what they felt all the participants deserved – for participating in what they felt was an affront to their God in the Holy City.
I can usually handle reading their vitriol pretty well, but I had to walk away from the computer for several hours after that. It just made me feel so sick and angry and sad.

      • Octoberfurst

Reading hateful crap like that makes me sick too. So many people justifying murder because supposedly their God was “offended”.

        • ZhyKitty

Supposedly, being the operative word since, far as I know, nobody got an owl post from Her notifying folks that She was offended.
In fact, rumor has it that She rather likes parades.

      • Schlukitz

I had much the same reaction as you did.

It really tears down ones faith in humanity. ๐Ÿ™

  • bryan

Religious fundamentalism is poison. It destroys lives. It kills. RIP beautiful young lady.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

and it feeds on mental illness

    • FAEN

It really kills the ability to think rationally doesn’t it? Boggles the mind how people can mindlessly follow a book ‘written’ 2500 years ago.

    • Rebecca Gardner

      Religion, period, destroys everything!

  • Davidjs

    Damn!

My deepest condolences to her family.

It is always so depressing when a young life is cut short by evil.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

And to her friends who she was there to support.

  • DaddyRay

I read elsewhere that Shira is an organ donor, even with her death she is helping others. Such wonderful giving and caring girl.

    • gaymex

      Heartbreaking.

    • motordog

Indeed…and who did that fucking murderer ever help, I wonder? I think it’s a safe bet that, by anyone’s standards, that shit has never done anything kind for anyone.

“It’s funny how one insect can damage so much grain.”

    • ZhyKitty

It’ll give her parents some measure of comfort in the coming days to know part of her lives on in others.
I know it helped me like that when my daughter was killed. I like the idea, very much, that somewhere in the world, my daughter’s heart still beats.

May they know peace, someday….bless their hearts.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

How the hell can that monster justify the killing of a child? Hopefully, this societal parasite will now have to be an imprisoned parasite.

    • Lumpy Gaga

And fuck the Israeli SC for letting him out 2 years before his sentence was fully served. This is one of those rare occasions where you can take the wingnut mad-lib meme “So-and-so would be alive today…”, and it would be true.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

All too true. And so damn tragic that I can’t even imagine how this child’s parents are dealing with this. This man is a terrorist and I truly hope he dies in jail as he should never have the opportunity to be free again as long as he lives.

I don’t suppose prison was much different for him than what he was used to as he was just released recently. And made no effort to contain his disgusting, vile hatred.

  • FAEN

Organized religion-constantly fucking up people’s lives.

  • Octavio

The purpose of Scott Lively’s next money beg is to finance his upcoming trip to Jerusalem, where he will publicly dance on Shira Banki’s grave.

  • Ninja0980

    RIP Shira.

  • douglas

And yet the likes of Scott Lively fans the same flames that consumed the life of this beautiful child. And in America he is not alone as thousands of kkkristians take to their pulpits calling for acts like these in America. It’s only a matter of time.

  • Ninja0980

I wonder where Tony Perkins, Mike Huckabee and the other bigots are at?
Surely they must be outraged by this right?

    • FAEN

Yeah right! Those excuses for humans are always conveniently silent when one of theirs attacks and kills one of ours.

      • Lumpy Gaga

However, they are shaken from their silence once you tag the perp as “one of theirs” and anything but a sick loner beyond the reach of their messaging.

    • Ed Burrow

      Shirley.

    • RoFaWh

If they are outraged at all (which I doubt; after all, she was “just another Jew”) their outrage would mainly be due to this incident exposing the illogicalities and inconsistencies in their rhetoric.

PS: My parenthetical comment is in the spirit of reminding everyone that the gay-haters also hate blacks, Jews, and anyone with a skin color other than lily white. Theirs is an all-encompassing hatred of anyone and anything “different”.

  • RobynWatts

R.i.P Shira. My condolences to her family.

  • Blake Jordan

Will the readers of Brietbart, et. al. be celebrating the death of a 16 year old, straight girl???

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Likely won’t even know about it.

      • Blake Jordan

They reported about the stabbings, why would they ignore the death of one of the 6?

        • Johnny Wyeknot

This is one time I am not going to venture over to Breitbart.

          • Blake Jordan

I did not read the comments of the previous Brietbart articles; one of the other JMG commenters were brave enough to venture there and report on it.

        • DaddyRay

They have a post up but for me it says Disqus is having problems loading

          • Blake Jordan

I won’t be going there, I rather not taint my soul over reading all that hatred for this sweet girl.

          • DaddyRay

Very wise advice – I went to the Yahoo comments on the article they posted and as predicted they are littered with asinine comments

          • zhera

OK, I have to ask: I’ve never heard anything but negative things about Yahoo news and the commenters. So why are sane people such as yourself going there?
            Not criticizing, just wondering!

          • Octavio

It’s kind of like chewing on tin foil. It’s annoying and sort of hurts, but at the same time it’s an addicting sensation.

          • DaddyRay

Back in the day Yahoo commenters were actually pretty civil, I used to comment there a lot. Then they disabled their comments for a couple of years. Ever since they reenabled comments it has been a cesspool of rightwing trolls.

When a situation like this comes along that so clearly shows what their hate leads to and you just can’t fathom anyone saying anything mean it just confirms that they are heartless evil people.

          • Goodboy

Yeah, I always wondered about that too. When did it become such a magnet for every right wing religious loony tune.

          • DaddyRay

I think Yahoo’s situation is similar to AOL. As other email providers came available the younger generation moved to the newer options leaving a higher demographic of older users.
I have to admit I still have a yahoo email account but it is my spam mail account – I check it about every 6 months and delete all of the email never looking at any of it.

          • Goodboy

            How very ageist of you!

I guess that’s like when they moved out of Manhunt into Grindr, Scruff, etc. Now MH is nothing but outdated users and profiles:-)

          • DaddyRay

Sorry, didn’t mean it to sound ageist. Just pointing out the demographics of the users probably changed over time.

          • Blake Jordan

It is disappointing that places like Yahoo, etcetera (non right wing nut job conten providers) is so heavily dominated by trolls in their comment sections!!!
And that those places do not even bother to try and rectify the problem…

          • Steverino

It’s just as well. There is little reason to give much weight to the vile peckings of losers holding court on Breitbart in their mother’s windowless basement, in between picking their noses and masturbating.

Despicable as they are, they’ll say she had it coming. As I mentioned in response to the Scott Lively article, sabotage, bombings and assassinations. From Eric Robert Rudolf to this hateful murderer in the name of “God”, the True Believers are bent on mayhem and murder for our community.

    • Ninja0980

Yes, they really are that vile.

    • Schlukitz

You can bet your sweet ass they will.

    • Remarkably, there are no comments on the story. However their Disqus seems to be on the fritz.

    A couple of comments…
‘May her memory be a blessing” may sound a little odd in English, but the hebrew phrase ื–ื™ื›ืจื•ื ื” ืœื‘ืจื›ื” that it is the translation of is very common (The phrase above is feminine, ื–ื™ื›ืจื•ื ื• ืœื‘ืจื›ื” would be used it it was a man, the Hebrew language, like Arabic is strongly gendered)

She will be buried quickly, Judaism does *not* believe in enbalming due to it being “desecration of a corpse”. However organ donation is considered a higher mitzvah and as such is common.

The politics here is going to be whether Netanyahu is invited/attends the funeral. That’s considerably more acceptable to the religious members of the governing coalition than Netanyahu attending next year’s march.

    • gaymex

      Thank you for your explanation.
I was moved by the expression “May her memory be a blessing.” even though I thought it was more than a little strange coming from Netanyahu.

      • Randolph Finder

Not really. Think of Netanyahu as a FiCons who needs the TheoCons to stay in power.Israel is a Parlimentary Democracy with about 10 parties *right now*. It’s actually even more complicated than *that*, but that’s probably the closest equivalent in American Politics. The Theocons (Shas & UTJ) hold about 20% of the parliment and as such are very useful as a coalition partner.

And in Israel marriage really exists on two levels, what the Theocons (who have control of the Rabbinate) will approve and then everyone else. And in that regards SSM is like a marriage between a Jew and a Muslim. Israel won’t perform the marriage, but we will recognize it. It’s part of the reason between recognition of SSM and performance of SSM will be one of the longest gaps on the planet.

Nice words Netty. How about elevate LBGT rights as the same as the rest of Israelis? How about add on the hate crime against LBGT laws? You can protect yourself from the enemies on the outside, you can’t protect the enemies from within. Not if you can’t control the religious extremists in your country.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

Maybe this will be a Charleston moment.

      • bambinoitaliano

On one hand Israelis seems to be smarter people. They experience more discrimination from their neighbors. They should have better understand than any nations. On the other, Netty Yahoo is pandering to the deeply religious rooted right wing fraction of the country. I do not know how the nation as a whole relate to this tragedy or how much pressure the government is facing.

        • RoFaWh

One possible outcome if the Ultras don’t some to their senses: the people who actually do the work in Israel could just say “to hell with this nonsense” and emigrate to countries where religion has much less influence. What would the Ultras do if the water, sewer, and electrical supplies all stopped working? If there was no longer an army able to resist military pressure from the surrounding Arab countries?

The Ultras are getting a free ride and they know it, but I suspect the incident under discussion has somewhat weakened their influence. We’ll know for sure if the Knesset starts curtailing that free ride.

          • bambinoitaliano

I’m not familiar with Israel politics. Are people willing to forgo the country on the basis of Ultras politics?

          • Veylon

Back around the time of the Six-Day War, there was a sign at the airport: “Last one to leave, please turn out the lights.”

The Ultras are parasitical. They don’t work, they get free handouts, they dictate to the country. If they fully take over, they’re liable to effectively chase all the productive citizens out and crash the economy. That’d be terrible.

  • Ninja0980

For those that keep wondering why Joe posts stuff from the Harlem pastor or Scott Lively or many of the other religious extremists weโ€™ve all come to know and hate, itโ€™s because of stories like this.
While we roll our eyes at how stupid they sound or laugh at them, people like this murderer are listening to every word they say about us and believing it.
And itโ€™s not a question of if but when an attack on the LGBT community and allies will happen.
The hatred spewing from the Religious Reich in light of our victories all but ensures that.

    • DaddyRay

So true and if posts like those are not documented then people wonder how it could happen.

    • Lumpy Gaga

Yes, the alternative is to respond, without irony, the way the mainstream media does to these hate crimes: “Now where did THAT come from??”

    • DaveDocSC

Agreed. I think it’s important to keep our allies aware of the ongoing hate machine.. So many of our friends and family think the LGBT equal rights issue is solved with the Obergefell ruling. We should all understand that our struggle for full equality will likely go on for decades.

      • yetanotherLaura

Believe me, as a straight ally, I’m under no illusions that things are all fine and dandy now. I, too, am afraid that the rantings by the crazies like the Harlem pastor and Lively and Perkins et al. are going to cause some massive anti-gay violence in this country. And folks like me are ready and able to speak up if it happens (which I devoutly hope it won’t!) and point out just where it’s coming from. I really hope this Jerusalem killing opens more eyes in this country to the level of insanity that’s occurring in the US, too.

I can’t figure out why the police weren’t keeping an eye on him at the parade — only an ultra-Orthodox troublemaker would show up at a Pride Parade wearing that beard, the sidelocks, and the fringes along with a black suit and a buttoned-up white shirt. It’s not a costume parade there, I think?

      • Queequeg

Even worse is the fact that he has done it before.

“because of evil, stupidity and negligence”
    And religion.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

      You repeated yourself.

  • Queequeg

It is horrible what self righteous hatred makes people do in the name of God. This is very sad for the girl’s family.

  • Gregory In Seattle

“For no good reason and because of evil, stupidity and negligence, the life of our beautiful flower was cut short.”

    Religion in a nutshell.

  • Paul Forsyth

So sad. This is the kind of hate Mr. Lively is responsible for and should be held accountable for. I hope Yishai Schlissel spends the rest of his hate filled life in prison.

Rest in Peace, beautiful young friend ! Your uncompromising, unconditional love has now reached around the entire world.

    Dearest Shira,
May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest, Alleluia !
Remember me O Lord when you come into your kingdom, Alleluia !
Give rest O Lord to your hand-maid who has fallen asleep, Alleluia !
The choir of saints have found a wellspring of life and door of paradise, Alleluia !
Life: a shadow and a dream, Alleluia !
Weeping at the grave creates the song, Alleluia !
Come enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you. Alleluia ! Alleluia !! Alleluia !!!

  • Sporkfighter

Except for her eye color, she could be my sixteen year-old daughter who also attends gay pride events to support her friends. He family has lost so much, but so have we.

  • duanebidoux

Americans celebrating our recent wins must not forget those abroad simply trying to stay alive.

  • That’ll Show ‘Em

That does it! ELEVEN YEARS in prison for that ringlet-headed bastard son of Eva Braun.

  • map

Actually, I’ll advocate for LESS TOLERANCE. In fact, WAY less tolerance. Let’s stop tolerating hate-filled religious whack jobs period. Let’s stop tolerating preachers of hate and call them what they are, religious terrorists, Jewish, Christian or Muslim.

  • JCF

Memory eternal—rest in the arms of the Holy One.

    SAY HER NAME: SHIRA BANKI!!!!!!!

  • Dale

    Gotta love that CHRISTIAN LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE!

  • Justin

Now will they lock this guy away where he can’t hurt anybody else? Will the murder of a sixteen year old girl finally be enough for them to see the intolerable danger he represents to people?

  • HAAAAAAA

    RIP Shira

  • fuzzybits

Your support and love is felt by folks who live in other parts of the world too. RIP Shira.

  • TreGibbs

Shocking, horrifying, tragic and infuriating. And fuck Ben Shapiro and all the other Breitbart a-holes that celebrated this tragedy, now they have blood on their hands – evil pieces of shit they are.

  • crankyd

This time… the State should just kill him. and dismantle the lives of all associated with his sect of evil.

  • THEBEARCUB

BiBI NetanYAHOO is full of shit for that heartless tweet!

  • Michael Varian Daly

Cut off is cock and let him bleed out in a ditch.

  • Gigi

So sad. The Breitbartians are clucking with glee that “these people who shove it in our face 24/7” finally got what they deserved.

  • Cosmo Tupper

Off with his h*ad (a little at a time) in an internationally aired video.

  • NMNative

I grieve for this young lady and with her family.
Preaching hate, furthers hate. I hope her family finds comfort in what a beautiful person she was and that she died standing up for her belief of a better world shared equally by all.

  • 2karmanot

Unutterably sad. What a beautiful young woman, so full of life, of music, of justice and humanity to be cut down by yet another evil bigot.
