STD Incidence Ranked By City

A website that sells apartment rental agreements has, for some reason, compiled CDC data to rank US cities by incidence of STDs per capita. HIV is not included in their ranking. They write:

Despite our puritan heritage, Americans really love to have sex. It turns out, a lot of us like to have sex without protection, too. Using publicly available data sources, weโ€™ve mapped sexually transmitted diseases across most major cities in the USA. The military helped cities rank strongly in the top 10, with Norfolk Naval Base, Ft. Hood, and Ft. Bragg all pushing their cities to the top. The data used here comes from the CDC for 2013, and reflects reports of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. (Herpes data is not collected). To normalize the data, we measured rates per 100,000 people. We chose only to show cities with a significant amount of population, so rural counties are not show on this map. Specifically, we only ranked cities with a population of at least 50,000 or more. We ignored absolute STDs and only used the rate per 100k to establish rankings. We opted to treat Washington, DC. as a city and not a state. We also chose to represent each borough of NYC separately.

  • Blake Mason

The south… damn. The lack of a well rounded sex education there really shows.

  • GarySFBCN

It would be nice to see this correlated with sex-education that is abstinence-based or non-existent.

  • bkmn

    Next – teen pregnancy rates.

    • bambinoitaliano

That does not rank by region. It’s by last name. Palin, Dugger, Romney, Heppner, Bates, Osmond, Jeub……..

  • Michael Smith

Gee, It’s almost like this is a serious problem in states with inadequate sex education.

    • Michael Smith

I count three California cities on that list. There are eight cities in Louisiana on it. There are nine from Texas.

    • Joseph Miceli

Naaahhh! Couldn’t be. Jesus must be punishing them for sin.

    • clay

The federal “Religious Freedom” bill would return us to nation-wide abstinence-only sex ed at the same time it would expand Hobby Lobby contraceptive-free medical coverage and shaming / economic limitations on single mothers– because that will give children more opportunity.

  • oikos

Wow, Montgomery is a hot bed of virulence. Coincidentally Roy Moore works there.

    • People4Humanity

      Coincidence?

      • oikos

        should have added /s

        • People4Humanity

Is Caleb ‘sequestered’ out of the general population, yet?
          — does anyone know?

          • oikos

Haven’t heard anything about him. Very quiet.

    • Joseph Miceli

No wonder Roy Moore is so crabby.
Get it? Get it? (nudge, nudge)

  • Octavio

Las Vegas/Henderson shows up as an active red area, but doesn’t even rank in the top 100. Damn. Burned again!

    • Sk3ptic

      That burning sensationโ€”don’t ignore it!

      • Octavio

For an old surviving whore such as myself it’s a Festivus miracle that I have yet to contract an STD. Never. And if anyone should be HIV+ it should be me. Although I did catch the crabs twice. But they were real nice when I evicted them and have not returned in more than 40 years. ๐Ÿ™‚

        • BudClark

I remember the days when the baths used to put 50 gal. drums of A-200 with pump sprayers in the showers (chuckle).

    • oikos

Does it burn when you pee?

  • BearEyes

    Despite our puritan heritage?
I would be more inclined to say because of …

    • oikos

Bingo. Non repressed people are far better educated about protecting themselves from STDs.

    • JT

Interestingly enough, the geographical areas with genuine historical Puritan heritage tend to score low in these things. That’s probably more a result of their higher education levels and sophistication than of any religious ancestry.

      • clay

The Puritans gave us the Congregationalists, the Unitarians, and the northern (American) Baptists. They were clearly anti-adultery, but were not anti-sex. I think they got a bad rap during the sexual revolution because people weren’t willing to blame much more recent relatives for their repression– the Victorians.

        • David Walker

Unitarians anti-adultery? How times have changed.

    • David Walker

Interesting that none of the Top 10 are cities in Puritan Territory. Philadelphia is furthest north, and that was mostly Quaker.

      • gewaite

Are you suggesting that the Inner Light is at least partially responsible for all that bed hopping?

        • David Walker

The Inner Light, if one isn’t careful, can create the Inner Fire.

          • gewaite

And you’ll find yourself, as did one Quaker lady in the 17th century, ripping off her upper garments and crying out “Welcome the resurrection!” right in the middle of a church service.

          • David Walker

Early 1920s songs, “All the Quakers are Shoulder Shakers,” in which the city of brotherly love adopts the shimmy as their manner for walking.

  • e jerry powell

Let’s talk, if we might, about abstinence-only sex education for just a moment?

Now, some of this has to do with smaller towns, so the per capita percentages can’t help but be higher, but even factoring that it …

And Waco is home to Baylor, one of the largets Baptist-run schools in Texas.

    • People4Humanity

To be fair and balanced, we ought to bring in an expert on this topic. Wonder if Bristol Palin is available?

      • Sk3ptic

Or any number of nuns. Or priests.

      • oikos

        Her expert advice is

        • e jerry powell

“Bristol Pali is ON HER Back.”

          FTFY.

          • oikos

            Or her knees. ๐Ÿ™‚

          • e jerry powell

If she doesn’t want to see his face, anyway.

      • e jerry powell

I’d prefer an expert that understands the concepts of “irony” and “hypocrisy,” but we can make do if we must.

      • Honey, from what everyone says, she is ALWAYS available!

  • Sk3ptic

My dad gave me some sage advice that he’d gleaned from years of living the high-flying lifestyle of an airline pilot in the 70s: keep your dick in your pants, wrap it up if you don’t, and ALWAYS look before you leap. Pretty sensible and still holds up!

    • Octavio

That’s excellent advice. All my dad told me about sex was, “If they smoke, they fuck.” That is also spot on. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Sk3ptic

I remember that one as “if they smoke they poke!” Yep–true!

      • Joseph Miceli

Never heard that. Thank you Obi-wan Octavio! ๐Ÿ™‚

        • gewaite

Class based: the poor have less education/lower value on self-control and smoking correlates heavily with lower levels of education and self-care.

          • Joseph Miceli

The poor have “lower value on self control?” Really? Hmmmmm. I do take issue with that.

          • leastyebejudged

Because political correctness trumps study after study every time !

          • Joseph Miceli

            1. I know plenty of disciplined poor people who work very hard and lead productive lives….
            2. You might want to reread your name.

          • leastyebejudged

You’re an idiot, and you lack basic reading comprehension.

          • Joseph Miceli

Oh Goody! Anther troll. I LOVE TROLLS! Now, let’s see….
You called me an idiot so I feel comfortable saying “fuck you” to you. So, fuck you! Apparently you feel my reading comprehension is lacking. Well, that’s strange since I’ve never had that problem before. You, however, seem to be plagued by a horrible case of being an asshole. I’m not sure there’s a cure. I also think you need to change your screen name since it blatantly brands you as a hypocrite.
Now, toddle off and go be a dick to someone else and maybe you’ll be able to get hard enough to masturbate! I doubt it though.

          • gewaite

Based on every sociological survey I’ve ever seen, yes; the poor have little or no reason to save for tomorrow since it won’t make any real difference to their life outcomes.

          • Joseph Miceli

Well, that doesn’t equate with self control. That is the recognition of futility. I know PLENTY of poor people with a lot of discipline.

    • clay

The only sage advice I got from my parents was in the form of a set of Encyclopedia Britannica, completed (along with the Bible) by the time I was twelve. It was Kansas. I was bored.

  • Gustav2

Would Norfolk, Hood and Bragg going to be better at self and clinical diagnosis, along with reporting by med professionals?

Columbus OH is 77 even tho we are 15th in population. The Columbus Health Dept did just put out an advisory about the uptick, especially in Black men who have sex with men…blaming Grindr, etc.

    • JoeMyGod

My first thought was that military docs are more likely to make the required reports to the CDC.

      • Gustav2

Yes, and aren’t those bases currently the major ship in and out of the country bases?

        • Lumpy Gaga

Who says we don’t export anymore?

The vast majority are in the South. Another indication that the Bible Belt is easy to unbuckle.

    • Toasterlad

Except Philadelphia, where STIs are transmitted via cheesesteak.

      • noni

        more rewarding with beefcake though.

      • Lumpy Gaga

What a comedown for Baltimore, though. They were #1 several years running (heh heh, “running”).

      • Gerry Fisher

        I *hate* when that happens.

    • Hal Watts

I grew up in the Bible south. A lot of the Teavangelical men love to thump their Bibles at YOU and criticize YOUR sexual choices. Yet you’d me amazed at how many mess around with sex workers and then return home to give their wives chlamydia.

      • JT

Actually, I wouldn’t be at all surprised. Hypocrisy runs deep in the Bible Belt. Those areas tend to rank high in unwed pregnancies, divorce and STDs. What else could you expect when people deny reality and push nonsense “solutions” like abstinence for teenagers? Then there is the large number of “preachers” caught in sex or money scandals and fraud. One of the reasons for the “fire and brimstone” manner is to stave off the demons within, which they know have a tendency to get out.

        • gewaite

Religion=desperation/ignorance=poor people. All of these are correlated.

    • clay

Yes, in the top ten and in the top 100. In the top 100, the northern cities that tend to show up are the some of the most segregated in the nation. Perhaps it’s southern religion, but it might also be a bit of racist discounting of African-Americans’ health.

  • James

    We call them STIs now.

    • Octavio

      Sexually Transmitted Ickies?

    • Gianpiero

I learned this only recently. Makes sense. I’m surprised now it wasn’t done sooner.

  • Alpha 50327

To be fair, that list changes daily depending on where each of the Karashians is making an appearance.

    • e jerry powell

You’ll notice that there are no cities near where Kardashians live where this is true. That’s because Kardashians tend to avoid metro areas of less than 500,000, where their impact is generally diluted. Higher population density tends to have that mathematical inversion effect when dealing with per capita statistics.

  • Cousin Bleh

I went to college near Montgomery. There is nothing to do there but fuck.

  • Capritaur

  • Chris Larosa

Irony: Norfolk was just ranked #3 most conservative city in the nation.

  • William

To be fair, Killeen is where all the bars, strip clubs and other businesses that cater to the soldiers’ needs are. Temple, just down the road is home to the VA hospital and a whole bunch of good, proper, wholesome Baptists. Soldiers at Fort Hood know to avoid Temple.

Yay!!!! WE’RE NUMBER EIGHT! WE’RE NUMBER EIGHT! I just lost about 35 pounds and was thinking about possibly dating again. This sort of statistic does make me think about taking it slow.

Canada’s capital – It says ALL syphilis cases were in males!

“Cases of infectious syphilis are up 76 per cent over the past year, according to Ottawa Public Health, and the agency is asking those at risk to be screened.

All cases in the last year have been boys or men, more than 90-per-cent of whom report they are men who have sex with men, the agency said in a statement issued Thursday.”

They didn’t include HIV because it is a moral degeneracy, not a sexually transmitted disease. Just ask American Talibangelicals.

    • leastyebejudged

They didn’t include HIV because the way the CDC tallies HIV infections is ridiculous and nonsensical, and if anybody actually did some real journalism they’d make a big fucking deal about how the CDC has managed to fuck up those stats for decades now.

We are only #2 this year?
St. Louis City covers a very small area and holds about 1/8 (0.125) of the greater metropolitan area population, with a marked skewing toward a hypersegregated and very poor ghetto population.
