Corgi Beach Day

LAist reports:

Just when you though Corgi Beach Day couldn’t get any bigger (and stumpier). So Cal Corgi National hit up Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach on Saturday for this season’s beach day, and organizers estimate that over 800 corgis were in attendance, even more than the one in April. Not bad, considering they started with only 15 at the first Corgi Beach Day way back in 2012. Once again activities included a corgi kissing booth, costume contest, and the ever-so-popular corgi limbo contest. All proceeds went towards Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue.

Back in the 80s I rescued a Corgi mix puppy from a cardboard box behind a Florida mall. He lived to be a very barky old man of 17.

    Is Queen Elizabeth in attendance?

    • Todd Isaac

Yes, but she kept it low key.

    • BobSF_94117

They should let her, when push came to shove, she banished the corgis from London instead of the bishops they like to bite.

  • Reality.Bites

Well now we know why no one was at Seattle’s Straight Pride.

…Just when you though Corgi Beach Day couldn’t get any bigger….

Yeah, I was just thinking that. /snark

Edit: I hadn’t seen Joe’s personal connection before I wrote the above snarky comment, sorry Joe. 🙂

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Very smart and game little dogs. I would’ve stood in line for a kiss.

    • ZhyKitty

They are SO smart. I haz corgi, and I swear, I think she understands everything I say.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

I just realized I wrote wouldn’t and meant to write would’ve. Fixed, and they are lovely dogs. I love the “cozy” mystery series by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie featuring a corgi. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend them.

        • ZhyKitty

Those sound lovely! I’m always looking for new books to read. All of the best suggestions for books I’ve had in the last 7 years have come from other commenters at JMG! lol
I’ve already marked them down on my wish list so I won’t forget!

I have 7 rescue dogs and love them all to pieces…but there is just something special about my corgi. I adore the shape of them, the way they move, their little rat feet, the way they’re so possessive of whatever they consider to be theirs, including their owners….and then their coats/coloring (mine is the lovely red and white) are just to die for.

Princess (my corgi) is totally sperled (aka spoiled) rotten.
All of my others are well trained, but not her. She was already pushing 10 years old when I stole her from her abusive owners. You couldn’t even tell what kind of dog she was, as her hair was mostly gone and she was so filthy, chained to a fence, no dog house – in all weather – a living skeleton. Imagine my surprise when, with a few months of tender love and care, a stunningly beautiful corgi emerged? It makes me sick to think of what the first 9 or 10 years of her life were like but now at least I’m giving her the old age she deserves and all the comfort, love, and affection she should have always had.

          • Wynter Marie Starr

Ugh, I hate people who abuse animals or children. We have two rescues so I understand about wanting to give them a beautiful life. I also understand about the spoiled, LOL. They give us so much, don’t they?

I adore Rita Mae Brown. There’s more than 20 of her Mrs. Murphy series now, and they’re a little like chips; delicious, salty, addictive, and with no nutritional value, but worth the indulgence from time to time. Especially if you are just looking to get lost for a few hours without needing to think. Here’s the list if you ever decide to try one or two. They don’t really need to be read in order.

And, on that note…the Corgi’s ode to Nikki Minaj:

  • Soren456

The only Corgi I ever knew was crabby.

    • TodDH

that says more about the owner than the dog..lol.

    • ZhyKitty

Mine is a bit of a bitch…just like her mommy.

      • Soren456

He was a professor’s dog, and the oddest dog I’ve ever met.

When the prof would have guests in for dinner or for cocktails, the dog would be in the room with us—alert and watching.

Whenever a guest moved, the dog would wuff at him and then watch his movements. Once, I went down a hallway to a bathroom and the dog wuffed first, then followed me, then stood outside the door waiting, then followed me back.

I’m sure that he counted the silver when we left.

  • McShane

    Hobbes loves the beach.

  • Tom Tallis

So that’s why there were so many Corgis at Rosie’s when I took Otto (see pic) for his daily beach run.

    • billbear1961

      Otto is adorable, Tom!

  • JCF

Need to invite Her Majesty, and HM’s Corgis!

[RIP, Mickie. My local corgi who crossed the Rainbow Bridge a couple of months ago.]
