Helicopters Matter

Via DNA Info:

City councilmembers are pushing ahead with their fight to end noisy tourist helicopter rides, introducing a bill Thursday that would ban the sightseeing flights in New York City. Several councilmembers including Margaret Chin, who represents Lower Manhattan, as well as the Upper West Side’s Helen Rosenthal, and Brooklyn’s Carlos Menchacha, proposed the legislation, which would squash the use of tourist helicopters that some call unbearably loud and persistent. “The Council finds that there is significant noise pollution caused by the dozens of sightseeing helicopters operating daily from heliports owned by the city,” the bill reads. “The heliports used by sightseeing helicopters are near water which carries the sound of those helicopters and significantly disrupts the daily lives of city residents who live and work near the heliports or across the East River.”

They might want to rethink their name.

UPDATE: I should have mentioned that the above was a full-page ad in yesterday’s New York Daily News.

I’m being slow…rethink their name? Someone explain, please.

    • TampaZeke

Insanely tone deaf reference to “Black Lives Matter”.

A clear example of how privilege so often makes people oblivious to basic decency.

    • Pat in AK

It also looks like helicopter smatter when it is in the .org form

  • Michael Rush

won’t someone PLEASE think of the helicopters !!!

    • Gustav2

When will the persecution of helicopters end?!!!!!

      • Brian in Valdosta

You know, Jeebus rode a helicopter into Jerusalem when he saved it from the evil Sodomites and Terabytes. A donkey was his co-pilot.

        • Octavio

          I saw that movie!

What a talent. I never really appreciated him until the last few years.

      You are the Queen

      • David Walker

I directed an amateur production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” One rehearsal, Lucy and the stage manager both called in sick, so I had to read Lucy’s lines. She has a scene in Act 2 that has lines like “When I grow up, I intend to be queen” and “I’m gonna be the biggest queen there ever was” and “What do you mean I can’t be queen?” The cast started laughing on the first line and it took a while after that scene for them to calm down. They insisted I should play Lucy. Lucy probably caught wind of it and was back promptly the next night.

My favorite line from that piece: “What do you mean I can’t be a queen? IT’S UNDEMOCRATIC!”

  • stuckinthewoods

The visual of an aircraft near the World Trade Center isn’t great either.

    • TampaZeke

That’s what I was thinking. Their PR person must be a complete idiot.

  • KnownDonorDad

Everyone needs a main rotor and a tail rotor. Helicopters matter.

  • Stev84

Not everything should be about jobs and money. And a couple hundred jobs don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

    • BobSF_94117

Those are probably pretty well-paying jobs. The middle-class does matter.

  • Puckfair52

    Occupy Helicopters!
Now that the River is the Gold Coast ewwww the noise! Traffic Helicopters hover over the West Village nearly every morning and evening watching the approaches to the Holland Tunnel
. I’d rather they end the special night permits that allow builders pushing up multi million dollar condos to work till midnight.

My college roommate’s father was the rotor pitch control expert at Sikorsky aircraft. He told me that the damned things really aren’t safe at all and made me promise to stay out of them. I had many friends in ‘Nam who went down in non-combat related helicopter failures and an air traffic reporter that went down three times on the L.I.E.. The thought of so many of them hovering above a crowded city gives me the willies.

    • Octavio

Manhattan had a radio/TV traffic news team that kept crashing into the the Hudson. I believe one traffic reporter made his or her own news for surviving two crashes but not his third into the that scenic body of water.

    what about Billionaire helicopters?

    • BobSF_94117

They’re silent, like rich people’s farts.

  • Ray Butlers

This flyer is tasteless in so many ways. Don’t they have any gay men over there to help them with their graphic design, photography, writing and public relations issues?

    • David Walker

This is what happens when straight people commandeer jobs that are clearly intended for The Gays.

I used to own and live in a four-plex money pit in North Beach just below Coit Tower in balmy SF. We had a serious problem with the local news outlets regularly buzzing our neighborhood for no other reason than to get a shot of the city for the morning, noon and evening news. That was more important than residents enjoying the peace and vistas from our rooftop gardens and balconies. Formal complaints and organized demonstrations didn’t accomplish anything. Finally, several of my neighbors began shooting at the copters. It was big news when the ABC affiliate scooped that their own news team in the sky was facing certain death when they discovered bullet holes in “Chopper 7.” The FAA, BFI and police investigated. No one was caught. But the helicopters quit showing up three times a day just to video the city for their live news feeds. A bit dramatic, but it seemed to work — for a while.

    • David Walker

See? If the guys in the chopper had guns, … I’m not sure where to go with that. It’s the argument that invariable comes up (if the people at the church were armed…, if the people in the movie theater had guns…). I really despise that argument, so now I think it’s fair game. Sometimes I can’t come up with a complete mock.

  • The periphery of Manhattan Island is water. The borough itself does have a little presence on the mainland in what one might think would be the Bronx, due to the straightening out of Spuyten Duyvil creek.

Heliports on Manhattan island are more ideally located at the periphery, on the waterfront. Much as the Empire State Building’s spire was intended (but never used) as a mooring point for zeppelins, the former Pan Am Building (now one of the buildings graced by the name “Met Life”) that was erected above the train platforms north of Grand Central Terminal once sported a working heliport, that was closed after an accident in the 1970’s See:: http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/16/may-16-1977-helicopter-accident-on-top-of-pan-am-building-kills-five/?_r=0

Recently, NYC has had horrific accidents involving gigantic construction cranes in midtown Manhattan, but no one seems to be energized to be banning large construction cranes.

I wonder what it would be like if the heliport that had been operated by New York Airways atop the Pan Am building were still in operation . . .

    • Octavio

I venture it would be an even noisier city than it already is. 🙂

  • GunnaHurt

Oh those poor poor billionaires in their new sky condos who have to hear commoners in helicopters pass by. I’m sure Taylor Swift and her new $30,000,000 condo up there are ever so bothered by it and she might have to spend another handful of pocket change to sound proof it. The poor lamb.

    Quiet blade technology — it’s a thing.

    • Stev84

Blue Thunder could do that in the 80s already :p

  • What? Helicopters matter. Black ops helicopters matter. All helicopters matter.

  • clarknt67

Seriously? “helicopters matter?” Did they focus group this for maximum white-privilege douchiness? FYI, a friend of mine live across the water from the Wall Street heliport. DO NOT ask her about the constant noise of helicopters.
