First Look: The Muppets

The Nerdist recaps:

It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the light, it’s time to get unbelievably excited for The Muppets triumphant return to television! The fall of 2015 will see the return of Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and the rest of the gang in a new Muppets series coming to ABC. In the trailer – that was first shown at SDCC – has Kermit explaining the new format of the show and all that it’ll entail. It seems much like The Office, Parks and Recreation and of course, ABC’s own Modern Family, it’ll be shot in the handheld documentary style that has become so very popular in the years since The Muppets have been off the air. As Kermit puts it, the new show will be “sort of an ‘adult’ Muppet Show” focusing more on the lives of the characters instead of it being sketch heavy and if the trailer is any indication – it seems ABC has nailed it. The trailer has quite a few familiar characters displaying their timeless shtick we grew up on mixed with the fast-paced comedic timing ABC has perfected with it’s shows like Modern Family and Black-ish.

“handheld documentary style that has become so very popular”

Again, I find myself in the minority.

  • KT

This looks great though the actual show will be slightly different (the premise is still mockumentary but the Muppets are now crew on Miss Piggy’s talk show). This was just a pilot presentation for the network but it was so popular at Comic Con the released it to the general public.

As if we didn’t know she was going to take over.

      • Anastasia Beaverhousen

I don’t like that Piggy person. She reminds me of someone.

        • Ginger Snap

Yes she does except Miss Piggy doesn’t have a drinking problem. Kisses Darling.

  • SilasMarner

    Meatball sushi? OMG ROFLMAO

    • Gustav2

      It’s called “fusion”

  • sherman

I need to get some of that frog oil or whatever is allowing Miss Piggy to maintain her youthful appearance.

    • RKitty01

it ain’t oil that she’s using; it’s frog (I don’t know if I can use this word so I’m not going to but there are enough pervs on this site to figure it out)

  • Hunter M

I’ve always loved the Muppets. Am really looking forward to it. Hope it’s as well done as the previous show.

  • Cousin Bleh

They should have done the return of The Muppets on HBO or Netflix.

  • Dave B

Miss Piggy looks as if she’s had some “work” done.

    • Gustav2

She has been out of work, so she looks ‘rested’

    • perversatile

‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye.’

  • Blake Jordan

I’m “intrigued” and I will be giving it a try when it starts.

  • RJ Tremor

I want to know more context about your liking pigs, Gonzo(edit: uh oh, jeaaaalousy.). Also, Kermit dating another pig besides Miss Piggy? Wut? Must know more! *Hits play to watch the rest*

Edit: “A bacon-wrapped Hell on earth.” ‘Kay, with all the material they shoved into this 10 minutes, I’m sold.

  • MDB

Perhaps Ms. Piggy will share some Topher, hmmmm ??? Dee-eee-licious !!

  • Elsewhere1010

I worked at the Fisher Theater in Detroit as a staff usher, but not when Piggy and “Gary” were doing Love Letters. Sorry I missed it.

  • BearEyes

Not crazy abut that “handheld” style, but I miss the muppets and will give them a chance.

    • barracks9

I think that’s the joke. They’re taking a stab at the overused devices – interview cutaways, handheld documentary style – in this trailer. I suspect the “show” will be more more like the show was.

      • KCMC

        and muppets are hand-held?

    • StudioTodd

      I agree with Gary…it’s gimmicky and over-used.

  • Octavio

    I miss Pigs In Space!

  • barracks9

Watch closely – they added a wonderful practical effect of Piggy’s snout print on the window pane after she smacks into it. That kind of attention to detail makes me very happy!

  • Cafeeine

“The band is always happy… legally now.”
    That cracked me up.

  • Disqusdmnj

Between this on the horizon and Bloom County back in publication, my young teen self has got an ear-to-ear grin. And already, both seem better than I could have hoped them to be.

  • nocadrummer

    One Milli-Moms to protest in 3… 2… 1….

  • Neil

I’m undecided about this, not being such a big fan of the original. But if One Million Moms puts in a complaint I’ll watch it in a heartbeat.

    • barracks9

If “bacon-wrapped Hell on Earth” doesn’t twist their nipples, what will?

      • David Walker

Srsly. Inter-species dating? Animals being friendly with monsters? This is clearly not what god intended. How can one’s children watch such filth and remain their innocents? We must get in touch with their sponsors and protest such fairness. And humor.

      • perversatile

        Everytime the OMM’s
        start quackin about something,
        this is what I hear:

“Those bitchez got their knickers twisted so tight-
they could fling a coconut across a parking lot”
        -My Mom about those moms

  • Ginger Snap

Oh Beaker you are still my favorite.

  • JCF

    ZOMG! Cue Baby-Boomer flailing… 😉

  • Daniel

Mmm…no. Ichi-go ichi-e; the Muppets were of their time. The original work stands up very well and is still enjoyable…as a product of its time. Resurrecting them (with wrong voices) is about as good an idea as resurrecting AbFab.

  • perversatile

    -ain’t like MissPiggy
    been layin round-
    being all old hat
    and shit. nuh-uh

  • perversatile

I thought slags like you got voted off the island -oh and by the way,
    Where is my NigerianPrincessMoney?!?!

  • RKitty01

Tell the truth-how many people sang the first few sentences of this article? Me!!

  • Jesushas2daddies

First the SCOTUS ruling on marriage, now this.
Summer 2015 is turning out to be pretty damn good.

  • BudClark

NOW can Kermit and Miss Piggy get MARRIED??!!
