Hackers Hit Ashley Madison

Via the Associated Press:

The parent company of Ashley Madison, a matchmaking website for cheating spouses, says it was hacked and that the personal information of some of its users was posted online. In addition, the person or persons behind the attack are threatening to release all of the site’s personal information — including its members’ sexual fantasies and financial information — if the company doesn’t take Ashley Madison offline, according to a prominent security blog. Toronto-based Avid Life Media Inc. says it has had the hackers’ posts — which included snippets of personal information — taken down and has hired a technology security firm. The company and law enforcement agencies are investigating. The breach was first reported late Sunday by Brian Krebs of KrebsonSecurity, a website that focuses on cybersecurity. Ashley Madison, whose slogan is “Life is short. Have an affair,” purports to have 37 million members.

This is probably our fault.

  • madscntst

    “This is probably our fault.”

Undoubtedly, as are tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, pestilence, etc. etc.

    • barracks9

Did you see how WE made that wildfire in CA jump onto the highway? FEAR US!!!

      • ZhyKitty

Fear us, indeed! I sent JK Rowling a very pretty thank you card for adding the Incendio charm to my repertoire.
She’s such a great ally. She really is.

You need to speak with your PR rep at Big Gay.

  • Sk3ptic

    Players gonna play.
    Cheaters gonna cheat.

  • LonelyLiberal

37 million cheatin’ straight people? Not possible!

Let me guess, 36.5 million are just gay guys cruising for dick, right? But wait, the wingers say we’re 2% of the population at max, so that’s 5 million people tops!

So at absolute minimum, 32 million of those poontang and downspout seekers out of wedlock have to be hetero.

    • cjs

I have never heard the penis being referred to as a “downspout.” I appreciate the addition to my vocabulary. 🙂

      • Tor

        You mean this little guy?

I wonder how many proponents of “family values” are sweating it right now.

      Mostly the ordained Baptists.

    • SunsetGay

I wouldn’t worry. Ashley Madison is an adults-only site.

      • Snarkaholic

Do they offer both straight and gay cheating options?

      • B Snow

        Oh, snap. 😀

      • Paula

Well, that leaves out catlick priests. They like fresher meat.

I truly do hope so. Back Then names and addresses of those in gay bar raids and male solicitation busts. Lives were ruined and no straights seemed to mind…until one of their own was erroneously listed. For the most part, the Forces For Good In The Community applauded such publications. And now…may I say “tee hee”?

      • ZhyKitty

When everyone is open about it, it’s actually great for the kids to have “a village” of people who love them and each other in their lives.
It’s all the unnecessary sneaking and lying and cheating people do instead of just being themselves in a relationship they’re truly happy in (however it may be designed) that breaks up homes and screws up the kids.

        • Bj Lincoln

Exactly! Cheating is bad and breaks up families. If everyone knows who is involved and is ok with it, it is not cheating. Doing anything open and honestly with integrity, there are fewer problems and issues.

Ugh,Ive been arguing on fat-fundy- farmer chat all day about this.

I said : Disgusting display of the radical unethical heterosexual lifestyle

    One dude replied :
” Yeah right, like gay men don’t live a promiscuous lifestyle…..give me a break there little pal. The very reason some choose the gay lifestyle.”

    Another said ”

” It’s mostly gays on that site ”

    LOL……….

    • cjs

I’m pretty sure that heterosexual men can have plenty of NSA sexual relations with women, not needing to go down the highway to Dicktown.

      • oikos

Dicktown is lovely this time of year.

        • cjs

The Dicktown Chamber of Commerce is offering special “conversion to gayness” discounts these days, plus special welcome packages that include lube, condoms and coupons to Fort Troff.

          But then, when isn’t it?

    • Ed Burrow

Open relationship vs Monogamous and cheating are 2 very different things. Duh..

      • Todd20036

They don’t get it. Most of the time I fucked a cheating spouse, it was a “straight” man

I’ve fucked gay married men, but it’s hard to call it cheating when the partner is watching

        • ZhyKitty

Exactly. Though, even hetero (and semi-hetero) couples and “thrupples”
happily have monogam-ish marriages and relationships too, you know. lol

There’s no need for all the drama when everyone is just upfront about what they want.
Then you don’t have to worry about getting outed for cheating!

        • clay

My rule, if people are in the same room when one of them cums, they’ve had sex. The watching partner (unless it’s by, like, Skype) actually counts as a participant for me.

          • ZhyKitty

Yeah! Lots of folks, that’s totally their “thing”, just to watch. It definitely counts as participation.

          • clay

(and was charged appropriately, I should hope)

        • B Snow

Like Dan Savage’s brilliant response to being asked if he’s ever cheated: “Does it count as cheating if you’re at one end of the guy and your husband is at the other?”

    • Nexus1

Yep that great big market of gay men who want to fuck married women. Ashley Madison really tapped into a goldmine there. /s

    • JT

Hold on! Did that guy admit that some of the “very hetero” guys over there could “go gay” for the greater availability of sex?

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Oh these people don’t follow the rules of logic.

        • JW Swift

They don’t even have the capacity to understand the rules of logic. They hear something on Faux Noize or one of their echo-chamber blogs, and that’s good enough for it to be gospel for them.

    • MDB

…and all this time I bought into the lie that there were only .06 & of the adult US population was (gasp) gay ?/?

If you don’t have the balls to discuss your sexual wants, needs and desires with your partner, you pay a price.
No sympathy from me for these people.

    • Jonty Coppersmith

It’s about sex addiction or the excitement of being a cheating asshole and getting away with something or who knows what, but I don’t think it has anything to do with discussing sexual needs and desires. They just want to be married and get some strange at the same time, to have their cake and eat it too. Not one iota of sympathy from me for cheating mother fuckers.

      • Nexus1

Yep. Their spouses could be sexual Olympics champions on a nightly basis and some people will still need to cheat. It’s an ego thing and a sexual thing and a thrill seeking thing. People that are prone to cheat will do it on the most loving and sexually adept partner. Just as people who aren’t prone to cheating will stay faithful even in a sexless or sexually unfulfilling relationship.

        • Jonty Coppersmith

You are so right. We are not animals who have no control over our dicks. We make choices. Attractive men are everywhere. We see them walking down the street everyday. It doesn’t mean we have to act like kids in a candy store who have no self control. The hubby just emailed me a shirtless pic of one of my “celebrity crushes, ” Scott McGillivry from Income Property. He knows he has no need to worry, that it’s just innocent fun. Just because you’re on a diet doesn’t mean you can’t read the menu, appreciate the beauty from afar, etc.

        • ZhyKitty

          What an interesting hobby! lol

  • Elliott

I love this. If it was Tinder or Grindr, I’d have no problem. This site caters to people who can marry AND!!! are already married, and who still want to cheat. I fought so fucking hard to earn the recognition of my husband’s and my marriage. I say suck it up assholes. You want to cheat, taste how it feels to have an automatic vilification. I was maligned even before I had my first kiss. So suck it up.

    • Um, hello, obviously all these people cheated because their marriages meant nothing anymore now that you and your filthy husband were allowed to use the same word to describe your relationship…. don’t blame these innocent men and women for being so incredibly depressed about the state of gay marriage that they went on a sexual rampage! It’s all your fault!!!

      • Elliott

Well since you put it that way… mea culpa. I should have known that sexual rampage is the final refuge of the oppressed. I think I have a tattoo saying as much…somewhere.

      • Jonty Coppersmith

Oh hell, they were going on these types of sexual rampages long before gay folks were ever able to get married.

  • As someone who has seen the bullshit of an affair and the excuses a man makes (and I’m sure it goes the same way for women), all i can say is good. Fuck them. They don’t have the balls to breakup with their wives, they deserve to get caught for being pussies.

If you actively seek out an affair, you do not love your spouse. I’m sorry. I like Dan Savage, but I do not buy into his “cheating helps some marriages”. If you aren’t getting what you want from a marriage, if you have to seek it somewhere else, if you aren’t comfortable enough with your spouse to talk about what you want sexually, emotionally, physically, whatever, then get the fuck out and find it somewhere. And give the other person a shot to be with someone who doesn’t need to step out to be happy. And spare me the “what about the kids” argument.

Don’t want monogamy? Don’t be married. It’s that simple.

    • uhhuhh

Funny how you sound exactly like religious bigots telling gays we deserve whatever we get, like AIDS.

      • How so? I simply believe if you’re going to sleep around and potentially hurt another person, don’t get married. Don’t agree to something you can’t or aren’t willing to give. I’m all for having as much sex with as many people as a person wants. I believe sex is healthy and experimenting is great. But going behind someone’s back, lying, and hurting them (an potentially hurting the other person as well), is a shitty move. It’s selfish as fuck. If you have one foot in your marriage and one foot in the bed of someone else, you are too much of a pussy to make a decision and so you straddle the line and get the best of both. To me, that’s just utterly selfish and cowardly. People cheat, marriages end. But I have far more respect for men and women who admit to affairs or cheating and leave a marriage than those who tell themselves “it’s no big deal, no one’s getting hurt, it’s just sex” and lie to their spouses and continuously cheat or have affairs.

I don’t know how you got “selfish people should get caught for being selfish” with “gays should be punished with AIDS”, but to each their own.

    • bambinoitaliano

it’s day of reckoning for the christian facists.

    • Snarkaholic

You’re right; they want to have their cake and eat their pussy, too!!!

      • Arkansan

        Ewww

    • Spongebob CrankyPants

“Don’t want monogamy? Don’t be married” LOL. What makes you think that being married makes monogamy mandatory?

“As someone who has seen the bullshit of an affair and the excuses a man makes….” Women are just as bad.

      • It doesn’t make it mandatory, but most people get married with the idea of monogamy in mind. Keyword most people. Every group has their strange fruit who want open marriages or hall passes or what have you, and if that’s what they want and agree to, power to them and if it makes them happy and whole, go for it. But when I think of marriage, I think of people assuming they’re the only ones their spouses are fucking. And there is a huge huge difference between an affair, or cheating, or sleeping around on someone and an open relationship, or swingers, or sex outside of marriage that is agreed upon, welcomed, and encouraged. Call me crazy.

And you are right. Women cheat in the same way, 100%. I just only have experience from seeing they guy’s bullshit end of it, not women’s. So I can’t speak for that. But you are entirely right, women are assholes who cheat as well and have similar excuses and they deserve to be put on blast as well.

        • clay

When I think of marriage, I think of mutual care, shared economy, and legal family recognition. . .

and not infecting each other with (outside) STIs falls into the mutual care column.

    • StraightSupporter

“If you actively seek out an affair, you do not love your spouse.”

I’m not a big fan of such absolute claims (unless evidence is provided for them), and would disagree that a person does not love their spouse if they are seeking an affair. It may be a shitty thing to do depending on the terms of the relationship, but I’d wager that a person can still love someone very deeply while doing something that the person they love would not like. The two are not mutually exclusive.

      • Jonty Coppersmith

That’s not my idea of love, but whatever floats your boat I suppose. If you love someone and you have agreed to be faithful, then you don’t run off and fuck someone else the first time they piss you off.

        • ZhyKitty

Not everything is quite so black and white. There is an acquaintance of mine, someone I’m quite fond of, who has loved the same woman since they were both 17. They’re now in their early/mid 80’s. She turned the spigot off, so to speak, about 20 years ago. He loves her madly, would never ever hurt her or leave her, but he has had some very VERY discrete (professional) relief in that 20 years.
It doesn’t mean he doesn’t love her.
          He does.

          • Jonty Coppersmith

I don’t always write this, but in my head I always acknowledge that there might be situations that could soften my views. I usually think in terms of someone who has a comatose or nearly comatose spouse who has no chance of recovery. I wouldn’t necessarily think such a person was evil for meeting his or her needs elsewhere as long as he/she didn’t abandon the spouse. It’s hard for me to imagine an 80 year old still having strong needs. If he has expressed his needs and his displeasure at her holding out, I might look more kindly at him, but there is also the age thing. Maybe she is just physically incapable at her age, for better or for worse?

          • ZhyKitty

Honey, he still tries to woo her! He’d give his right testicle to have her be the one throwing back the covers for him. He’s told me. It’s her he wants.
He told me that after menopause she just sort of…wasn’t interested anymore. I guess for a while she would do it for his sake and then eventually even that dried up…
I can see it from both sides, knowing them both. She probably just thinks they’re too old for such silliness anymore, as it’s not an urge she has anymore…but he does. Not so much anymore, really, but for the first decade or so, I know it was hard on him.
These are people I’ve been close to for a long time (moreso him) and I KNOW how much he loves her. When she passes away, I hope it’s after him, because he couldn’t do without her.
I guess, I mean…I’m not a man but I suppose some part of male sex drive is just driven by hormones? I don’t know, I just know he wouldn’t have ever sought a lover….just relief…very discreet, professional relief.
            I can’t judge him for it… I know him, he’s a good man, a good husband, and a good father/grandfather.
I guess he just had physical needs…and she was having none of it.

          • Jonty Coppersmith

Damn, I’m only 52 and already I see the libido is not nearly as strong as it was 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. I guess I can only hope to have strong needs when I’m his age. Maybe at her age the wife doesn’t care as long as he’s not “bothering” her.

          • ZhyKitty

I don’t think she knows…she’d beat him with a skillet for sure if she did. lol
However, I don’t think she’d ever look for clues either, as you say…she doesn’t want to be bothered or to discuss it.
Breaks his heart, but he’d never leave her for it.
I guess life just isn’t always black and white though, because there are surely others like them out there…and in that situation, I can easily still feel warm towards him and non-judgmental about what he admitted to me.
I’d never tell it on him, either – not IRL.

I get what you’re saying about your libido…Big Daddy is the same way now and he’s your age. I would like it if he were still as randy as our elderly friend, but alas… lol
That’s not worth cheating to me, though. I never would, even if he couldn’t anymore for some medical reason….but then, I guess we’re all different and my need to put his feelings before my sex drive would always win out (but I’m female and it’s different for us, I think).

            Enjoyed the conversation!
In parting, may you and hubbie both still have the ability and the desire (even if it’s not as often) until the day you both go on to the next great adventure….together!

          • clay

(There might also be some untreated physical effects for the woman)

    • Jonty Coppersmith

Another article. Interesting they are not out for money.
    http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/07/ashley-madison-an-dating-website-for-cheaters-gets-hacked/

Ashley Madison charges users $19 (£12) to completely erase their profile, but the hackers claim that the users’ details aren’t actually purged from the database. We actually wrote an in-depth piece on “full delete” back in 2014; at the time, we called it “not totally dishonest, but not totally honest either.”

    http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2015/07/impact-team-ashley-madison-threat.jpg

    • Nexus1

I figured that before I even finished reading Joe’s post. If they want the site shut down it’s clearly an ideological issue. They don’t want the site to exist and they want to punish those who patronize it. They could have made millions in extortion money if they wanted to, but clearly that wasn’t the goal. This was bound to happen to the Ashley Madison though, there have to be literally tens of thousands of jilted spouses who can point to that site as an enabler of the cheating, so there is doubtlessly several thousand that would be motivated to harm it and see it destroyed.

    • ZhyKitty

      Oh, wow.

  • So what happens from here. Criminal charges? Civil suits?

Are people actually being punished for all these security breaches?

    • bambinoitaliano

Civil suits would require these cheaters to expose themselves.

      • Nexus1

Well they’ve already done that, it’s why they were on that site. But will they be willing to reveal their identities in a court of law?

        • bambinoitaliano

Name like Brian Brown, Brian Fisher, Tony Perkins and Ryan Anderson are pretty generic. Even if their names show up on the list still require photo ID 🙂

          • Nexus1

Ryan Anderson would have to get married or be dating someone to even need those sites. But I suspect his indiscretions don’t involve cyberspace, but most likely one of his colleagues who has as much to lose in being exposed as he does. Mutual blackmail is a safer proposition that Ashley Madison. lol

          • bambinoitaliano

I doubt the site would check marriage licenses for anyone to hook up. The guys just like that all party involve knows what they are getting into. Also the site cater to the gay clientele as well. In regards to Ryan, not many can be rational and make sound judgment when it comes to sex. Especially someone who is so obsess with gay issues.

          • Nexus1

I think he’d be too full of fear and self loathing to let a website or his credit card company know what he was doing. If he’s getting any it’s from a fellow self loather at the Heritage Foundation or his local parish.

          • bambinoitaliano

You could be right regarding Ryan. I’m thinking of those who are on the down low that get expose for engaging escorts/pornstars or in a public washroom stalls. They are living in fear of being outed yet still engaging in risky sexcapade. Sexual urges can make those who are oppress do silly things.

          • Nexus1

Very true. The sexually repressed tend to act out in the most outrageous and dangerous ways.

          • ZhyKitty

As a rule, the more religious and repressed, the more outrageous the request, when you’re working as an escort.
I have a huge pile of diary notebooks from my years as an escort. There are requests in those pages that even the most hardened crack whore would walk away from without a second thought about the money being offered in exchange.

          • Tor

Dear ZhyKitty, I’m looking forward to your book. Please.

          • People4Humanity

Ah, but Brian S. (Shitstain) Brown is more specific. His wife could tell by the piXXX posted.

          • bambinoitaliano

Even if it’s her husband, why would she want to rock the rice bowl?

      • I think the real question is whether or not law enforcement is actually catching whose doing it. If you don’t know who did it, who would you sue? Maybe the company for not having good enough security? I’d rather the hackers be punished but it’s clear that security for most companies isn’t even close to being sufficient.

        • bambinoitaliano

In the hundred of pages of agreement we signed with the websites regardless of the nature of the business there lies the clause that the companies will assure we the customers utmost confidentiality and security of our personal information. When a site is hacked and customers personal information are breached the promise is broken. The result of the breached could further cause damages to the customers. The site is liable to compensate the customers of any loses as a result of the hack. In this case it will be Ashley Madison clients to sue the company for lax in securing customers personal information.

          • clay

I imagine they were also smart enough to insert language requiring binding arbitration and disallowing civil suits.

          • bambinoitaliano

Maybe not as iron clad as insurance policy that exclude earth quake and act of war damages 🙂

  • Raising_Rlyeh

This was almost certainly not anonymous. So taking bets: fundie Christian hackers, fundie muslim hackers, or a pissed off spouse or group of supposed who found their loved one on the site.

  • bambinoitaliano

I just want to see some familiar names that graces this site.

  • DisT

Should the names be published ? Will this cause outrage among net-citizens who values individual privacy like it did with Gawker?

  • Octavio

Monica Cole using her binary server background to pirate data servers again. That minx needs her wrists slapped.

    • CB

      Minx!! Nicely played, sir.

    • D. J.

She will be issuing an interesting boycott list…

  • The Professor

I bet some of those “family values” Christian GOP folks are getting pretty nervous….

  • Spongebob CrankyPants

I’m not laughing. I have done a lot of things in my life that I am not proud of. I certainly wouldn’t want my personal indiscretions posted online for all the world to see. Pretty sure most of you wouldn’t either.

    • ZhyKitty

I usually come across at least one item per day online which makes me very thankful to have been young, wild, and stupid before the existence of things like youtube, cellphone cameras, and revenge porn sites.

      • MDB

Old fashioned rotary ad touch-tone telephones, Polaroid cameras, and photos published in old fashioned daily newspapers (that people actually read every day) were scary enough !!

        • clay

party-line phones and misplaced shoeboxes of Polaroids.

    • JCF

If you make the “forsaking all others” PROMISE, you knew what you were in for. Sorry, no sympathy here.

Finally, a situation where Catholic Priests are not in the lead!

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Let’s not jump to conclusions — we haven’t seen the whole list yet.

  • Michael Hampton

If anyone has the time, we should scroll through and find out how many religious right republicans are on that list.

    • Spongebob CrankyPants

      Why?

      • Michael Hampton

To show their hypocrisy on marriage.

  • D. J.

Watch for the “I need quality time with my family” announcements start flowing.

  • Bj Lincoln

Seriously?! This site promotes cheating?! Where is the One Miserable Motherfucker?! Where are the anti-gay ass holes who are all about one man, one woman marriage for life?! I say, post it all! Let the country know just who is cheating around! I would bet my right arm 99% are str8 and 50% are hard core christians!

    • clay

OMM freaked the hell out when Ashley Madison advertised near a Super Bowl. Actually, that might have been near a super bowl, like Tupperware or Fiesta-ware (but not the uranium oxide red).

    • John T

So what you’re saying is, you’re OK with invading people’s privacy and destroying their personal lives by revealing the secrets of their private sexual behavior, just because some of them might be hypocrites.

  • Scott_Lumry

Is Diaper David Vitter on there? He’s been on soooo many others.

  • houstonray

Wait till it happens to GRINDR…closeted homophobes will freak out….

    No doubt.

And I can’t stop laughing about it.

It looks like we’re finally going to get a look at those NOM donor lists that we’ve be waiting so long for!
