24 Emmy Noms For Game Of Thrones

Via Yahoo News:

The elaborate fantasy saga “Game of Thrones” received a leading 24 Emmy Awards nominations Thursday, its stature apparently untouched by backlash over a female character’s rape scene. The series is a contender again for top drama honors, an award that has eluded it since it debuted in 2011. TV academy voters rarely give shows in the sci-fi or other genres the ultimate accolade. The TV academy took a step toward recognizing the increasingly diverse talent on TV, giving best actress nods to black stars Taraji P. Henson for “Empire” and Viola Davis for “How to Get Away with Murder.” That sets up a possibility of a history-making win: An African-American actress has never won the top drama acting award. “I gotta win! I gotta win for history!” an exuberant Henson said when asked about the prospect during an “Empire” panel in May. However, two-time nominee Kerry Washington of “Scandal” was left out this year.

Also receiving multiple nominations is Transparent, with a best actor nomination going to Jeffrey Tambor. Variety has the full list.

What series will be snubbed the most, Mad Men or House of Cards?

    • Gustav2

Mad Men, it is soooooo over.

      • bambinoitaliano

Agreed. Even House of Cards. But that is because they are among a bunch of very good shows on television these days. The standards are being raised by HBO, Netflix and others.

        • bkmn

I was wondering since HoC got screwed over royally last year.

    • Queequeg

I tried to watch Madmen, but, honestly, could not get into it. I didn’t like any of the characters.

  • metrored

Yet nothing for The Americans? It is a crime! A crime!

    • bambinoitaliano

That is a very good show and the most cringe worthy to watch because of the brutality of the two main characters. I am not so much a hate watcher rather than a frighten watcher. The fear of those two lead characters would do to others. LOL!!

      • metrored

Is bad that I still love them despite the brutality… or maybe because of it? I love how Phil and Elizabeth can scare me shitless but I still worry about their marriage and their kids… and Martha.

        • bambinoitaliano

Not at all! This is a show that I swear I will stop watching but when the season comes around I can’t help myself. I hate myself for caring those two vile characters. Talk about emotional abuse lol.

          • metrored

Oh, don’t stop watching! The wigs alone make it worthwhile. lol
Besides, they also do play the good guys sometimes… or good-ish.

        • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

I love only Phil. Elizabeth is evil.

          • metrored

Oh Felicity! What has become of you?

          • bambinoitaliano

Should not have cut that bloody hair of hers 😛

          • bambinoitaliano

Yeah she is the worst of the two.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, honey, no Eden Sher aka Sue Heck from “The Middle?” I have but one word….

    • Cuberly

      CONFESS!!!

    • bambinoitaliano

I wonder how many of these nuns with a bell will I witness this Halloween 🙂

    • fuzzybits

      Totally agree I ❤ Sue!

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

A lot of good in the nominations:

Kudrow, Tomlin, Maslany, Wittrock, Paulson, the supporting cast of Kimmy Schmidt

    And some bad:

Snubs for Eva Green and Kemper, and Lois Smith should have been nominated instead of Margo Martindale. Nothing for Penny Dreadful’s production designers!

  • Bruno

    Huzzah for Lisa Kudrow.

  • e jerry powell

NOT A SINGLE BROADCAST NETWORK DRAMA NOMINATED.
ONLY TWO BROADCAST NETWORK COMEDIES NOMINATED.
VIOLA DAVIS AND TARAJI P. HENSON FOR BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA.

Maybe it’s time for the big four to get some clues.

    • another_steve

So why are you shouting sweetie? lolol.

You want good TV drama and comedy, you gotta watch U.K. programming. Here in Maryland, one of our public television stations (there are several here) runs nothing but U.K. programming, round the clock.

      They know.

    • bambinoitaliano

Yup. The tv networks no longer have the excuse to produce poor dramas. American Crime, Empire should be the examples for them to set the standard. Shows like Extant and The Whispers are not quite there yet despite Steven Spielberg association. It’s all about the scripts. I’m liking shorten season between 10 to 13 and standalone season in terms of story telling. And I’m shock ! Shock! Shock! Penny Dreadful especially Eva Green was not even nominated.

      • e jerry powell

I’m a little miffed about Penny Dreadful, too, but the season that just passed isn’t even eligible for this year, and because it just ended, the Emmy panels will have forgotten it by the time for the next ballot.

        • bambinoitaliano

Yeah this season has some outstanding acting among the many brilliant cast.

    • bkmn

If the networks ever got off their ass to produce something other than reality television or bad adaptations of British shows they might find that people would actually watch them.

  • bambinoitaliano

    I’m leaning towards Viola Davis.

  • jizabel

It has to go to Taraji. It took nearly 30 years, but Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan finally has an equal, and her name is Cookie Lyon!

    • bambinoitaliano

I wont complain if Taraji wins. Her character is delicious!

    • Dan

      Love her.

  • Toasterlad

Nice to see Wittrock nominated, but no nomination for Frances Conroy invalidates the entire list. “Do not question me!”

Meanwhile, I know they won’t do it, but I’d really like to see Jeffery Tambor nominated for Lead ACTRESS.

  • robirob

I am surprised about the snub of Penny Dreadful. To me the latest season kicked some major ass.

    • bambinoitaliano

Yes! Yes! Yes! Especially Eva Green, Sarah Greene and Helen McCrory.

      • robirob

I’d also add Billie Piper and Patty Lupone (in the female special guest category). Timothy Dalton and Rory Kinnear had some awesome scenes, too.

Also the costumes and special effects really well done and imho deserve a nomination.

    • Mike Rasor

I suspect that may be due to the eligibility period for the Emmy Awards. To be eligible this year, an episode had to air before May 31. Penny Dreadful had it’s season evenly split with half the episodes eligible and half of them ineligible. Because so much of the series fell outside the eligibility period, they could not avail themselves of the “hanging episodes” rule. Because the series was evenly split between the eligibility periods for two different Emmy Awards, the show may not be eligible for any awards.

      • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Oh, thanks for posting this. I was wondering if Sense8 had been eligible, and according to that rule, it wasn’t.

        • Mike Rasor

Yeah Penny Dreadful’s second season & Sense8 will be eligible next year.

There are all sorts of ways the rules create weird quirks in the nominations. For instance, half hour shows are automatically considered comedies while hour png shows are considered dramas unless the creators file an appeal. That’s why Transparent is nominated in the comedy categories and OITNB is nominated as a drama (even though both are dramadies).

          • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

So, Penny Dreadful’s first season was eligible this time, and still no nomination for Eva Green? How could a voter watch her possession scenes and not nominate her?

          • Mike Rasor

Correct. Although to be fair, the first season wasn’t as good as the second season, and I think Eva Green didn’t really start to shine until the last few episodes of season 1. In season 2, she was on fire the whole time.

        • Queequeg

          Sense8 was awesome.

          • bambinoitaliano

            Eye candies a plenty.

          • Queequeg

Yes, Wolfgang, Will, and Lito, oh, or did you mean the dazzling cinematography?

          • bambinoitaliano

            🙂

  • Lars De

Disappointed to not see Naomi Grossman get the nomination for Pepper in AHS. She can say so much with just her eyes.

  • lymis

I love that some of the shows that are based on long books or book series are getting this “one season per book” treatment rather than the “cut it into unrecognizability to fit into a single theatrical release” idea of the past.

There is a reason some of these book series are so popular.

  • Guest

What about the show “Rectify”? A great drama with great acting, great writing, and challenging story lines all the way around. Not even one nomination, really?

  • Randolph Finder

It will be very interesting to see what happens next season. As I understand it other than “scraps” , the TV show has caught up with the books in plot points, so Martin will end up writing scripts as well as the next book, I think.

    • Queequeg

I’m just glad that those who have read the books can no longer give us spoilers. I have read that Brann Stark will be back after being absent for a whole season.

    • Talisman

Martin should not be writing anything else except the final books in the series. If these delays keep happening, we’ll have another Wheel of Time on our hands.

  • PLAINTOM

The demon Jezebel is truly pissed, she worked her heart out this year and still didn’t get a guest star nomination.

  • Talisman

    Finally, love for Tatiana Maslany.

I was almost certain they would compound the insult by nominating the actor playing the male clones.

    • Megrim Twist

Agreed! I love “Orphan Black” with a PASSION!

  • KnownDonorDad

    It is known.

  • Octavio

When Thrones starts saucing things up with full frontal male nudity — as they have so exploitatively done in Outlander — then give me a heads up. Especially when Peter Dinklage finally entertains us with the full monty. 🙂

    • Cousin Bleh

      Hodor.

      • Octavio

Surfing one night I came across what I believe is a recent production of Sparticus? Much satisfying meat and potatoes watching was enjoyed by El Squeeze and me that evening. Quite luscious. (and very sweaty)

        • AJ

Yeah, Spartacus aired on Starz until a couple of years ago. There were 3 primary seasons and a prequel mini-series/season that aired in between seasons 1 and 2.

The show is essentially 1/3 fucking, 1/3 murder, and 1/3 people getting murdered while fucking.

          • Talisman

If I remember correctly, the prequel resulted because the lead actor was diagnosed with lymphoma during a routine medical checkup leading up to season 2. Production was delayed to give him time for treatments, but it was soon obvious that the outcome was not favorable. The producers took some material that had been produced for S2 and expanded into a larger story. The actor died soon after.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

            Good times 🙂

      • Cuberly
    • Cuberly

Oh you see it here and there. Not sure it needs to be full on meat and veg but it’s still fun.

Daenerys has pretty good taste btw.

      http://thesword.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/mr-man-michiel-huisman-naked.jpg

      • Queequeg

Yes, she does. When she said “take off your clothes”, i was in complete agreement.

        • Cuberly

And how…..and he’s got a pretty tasty lookin tuckus too!

          • Queequeg

            No argument there.

      • Talisman

The actor had a very small recurring part in Orphan Black in seasons 2 & 3. I don’t think he did any nudity though. They’ve ramped up the male nudity a bit in Season 3.

He & the actor playing Paul were 2 of the greatest reasons to watch.

    • Queequeg

Alphie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, did full frontal in season one. I don’t think we’d want to see that again now that he is Reek.

      • Octavio

I’ll have to look that up. I don’t watch the Thrones. Throw in a couple of inter dimensional space ships, some greys and reptilians, an altruistic physicist that has discovered how to turn off the universe with the flick of a switch and then you’ve got my attention. And more meat and potatoes, of course. 🙂

        • Queequeg

It does have dragons! You wouldn’t understand my comment if you haven’t way the show. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but suffice it to say that Reek is not quite the same person as Theon.

  • MartiansAteMyCat

    Shame.

  • AJD
    • Octavio

      Most excellent.

  • Queequeg

Game of Thrones is violent, has its shocking moments and gratuitous nudity (not enough male), but it is an outstanding and compelling show With great acting. It certainly deserves any awards it gets.

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Why isnt OMMs screaming about this any other nominated show?

      • Queequeg

Because the shows are popular and won’t be canceled. They only pick on shows with low ratings so that they can claim victory when the show gets cancelled. Besides GOT is in HBO. Those women would never pay for a premium channel unless maybe it was a Jesus channel.
