California: Now More Latino Than White

Via the Los Angeles Times:

The demographers agreed: At some point in 2014, Latinos would pass whites as the largest ethnic group in California. Determining when exactly that milestone would occur was more of a tricky question. Counting people isn’t like counting movie ticket receipts. The official confirmation had to wait until new population figures were released by the Census Bureau this summer. The new tally, released in late June, shows that as of July 1, 2014, about 14.99 million Latinos live in California, edging out the 14.92 million whites in the state. The shift shouldn’t come as a surprise. State demographers had previously expected the change to occur sometime in 2013, but slow population growth pushed back projections. In January 2014, the state Department of Finance estimated the shift would take place at some point in March. Either way, the moment has officially arrived. California is now the first large state and the third overall — after Hawaii and New Mexico — without a white plurality, according to state officials. The country’s Latino population is now 55.4 million. California and Los Angeles County have the largest Latino populations of any state or county in the nation, according to the new figures.

For some reason Breitbart has illustrated their anger about the report with a photo of a very buff wrestler.

  • sw42

Wow, that guy looks like a rapist.

    • BobSF_94117

I think we’re supposed to think “Mexican drug/death gang”.

    • JCF

But he could be, I assume, a good person…

  • Todd20036

I never thought I’d admit I liked something I saw on Breitbart, but….

  • Todd20036

It’s not that it’s now impossible for the GOP to retake California, but they’d have to devolve back to the GOP of before the Southern Strategy before the racists and the religious (yeah, redundant) took over the GOP’s helm.

Today’s GOP will never win California, but today’s democrats could take over Texas in 5 or 10 years as immigrants move there and realize the GOP doesn’t like them much

    • Ireyon

Why would immigrants want to move to Texas at all?

      • Estrafalario

Uh, that question should’ve been asked a hundred years ago. My parents moved there as immigrants back in the 60s. It is a large state and has many different regions and many of those regions are majority Latino.

  • Blake Jordan

Contributors and commenters on Breitbart, et. al. make me want to declare my race as anything but white.

Whenever asked, I check “other” and write in “human”.

    • People4Humanity

Even though my heritage is English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch and German, I always mark “other.”

      • Câl

While I like your sentiment, I am going to be the grammar police and pull you up on one word in what you say. People from Scotland would almost always call themselves Scottish; Scotch is a word foreigners use for whisky (though having an ancestor who is a drink might be a thing), or in combination with something else (eg Scotch egg) or a block put by a wheel to stop a cart running downhill. 😉

        • People4Humanity

I am gracious and thankful for my comeuppance, and have edited accordingly.

  • geoffalnutt

Buff wrestler = White Power? Who knows? I need coffee.

    • GarySFBCN

It’s probably a Latino wrestler. The clue is his “lucha libre” mask.

      • geoffalnutt

Aha. As for Breitbart – I won’t go there…ever – so it’s my own fault.

      • clay

One of the standard symbols in crime mapping is a balaclava-like mask for burglaries. But every time I see it I think, “Ooh, Mexican wrestlers.”

    • KP

No Carlo is the “Boss” of Musclematt. Where gay guys service “straight” huge muscle dudes.

Another attack on trans people … defining gender as whatever was assigned at birth.

      • McSwagg

Absolutely disgusting! Also, they totally ignore those who are inter-sexed or ambiguous at birth. Unfortunately, they probably learned from their last failed attempt and the petitions will likely be valid this time. This will be a big local battle in Houston this November.

  • HoneyBoySmith

    For some reason Breitbart…

The next time someone tries to tell you that conservatives/Republicans aren’t racist, please show them the Breitbart comment section.

A lot of those comments would fit right in at Stormfront.

    • It’s a party over there at the asylum …foolishly, I looked.

      • Ireyon

        Masochist.

      • JoeNCA

They’re clearly worried a former minority group is going to do to them what they did to a former minority group.

  • HoneyBoySmith

One more thing: this idea that “California is now more Latino than white” is a consequence of the hypodescent ideology of the country.

That is, you’re only considered white if all of your grandparents or great-grandparents were considered white. Think of the president. He has as much white ancestry as he has black ancestry. It’s hypodescent that labels him black. Some might say that Barack Obama “chose” to identify as black. Maybe so. But, how many Americans would bow to his self-identification if he’d decided to identify as white?

It’s hypodescent that made it plausible for Rachel Dolezal to “pass” as black for so many years.

    • GarySFBCN

I respectfully disagree. In most demographic data collection, your race/ethnicity is based upon what you say you are.

As for race/ethnic-based discrimination, you are considered non-white if you appear to be non-white.

      • McSwagg

You are right. Government collected demographic data has been based on self identification for at least a decade now.

        • Octavio

However, I’ve been writing in “gay” or “homosexual” in every census form I’ve been requested to complete (about five of them so far). And the Census has yet to list at least one gay or homosexual household in their surveys. Ass wipes. 🙂

        • clay

make that four decades. The last time census takers filled in the forms, rather than rely on self-reporting, was 1960. The last time they “corrected” forms of people claiming to be mixed race was 1970.

          • McSwagg

Thanks. I thought it had been longer than I stated but didn’t have the facts at hand.

          • clay

And I got it wrong. The last time the Census Bureau “corrected” mixed race forms was 1980.

      • HoneyBoySmith

Let’s put aside for the moment the absurd notion that a man viewed as black by American society could be accepted as white simply because he said so.

Your objection contains the same obsession with hypodescent that I was talking about.

The idea that you’ve put forward is that anyone deviating from 100% white is automatically nonwhite. Is the person who deviates from 100% black considered nonblack? President Obama deviates quite a bit from 100% black. Should he be considered nonblack? If not, why not? As someone obviously not 100% black, with obvious white racial characteristics, should Obama be considered white?

As far as government data collection goes, the point is that even the people answering these questionnaires have been infected with the same hypodescent thinking that you’re displaying here. And, frankly, I find it saddening.

        • GarySFBCN

“Let’s put aside for the moment the absurd notion that a man viewed as black by American society could be accepted as white simply because he said so.”

“The idea that you’ve put forward is that anyone deviating from 100% white is automatically nonwhite. ”

I thought my initial response would be easy for you – or anyone – to understand.

I guess I was wrong about that.

          • HoneyBoySmith

            I understood it quite clearly.

I hoped that you would understand clearly that I was calling you out for falling for the same hypodescent nonsense that undergirds the panic on this issue.

I guess I was wrong about that.

          • GarySFBCN

Actually, you didn’t understand what I wrote at all, as indicated by your responses.

You remind me of many pompous assholes that I have encountered in academia.

            Have a good afternoon.

          • HoneyBoySmith

I’m getting the impression those academics understood you just fine…which is why you’ve labeled them “pompous assholes.”

The fact that you refused to answer the questions I put to you (which challenged hypodecent) is quite telling.

But, since you’ve wished me a good afternoon, I’ll return the favor.

          • GarySFBCN

I didn’t answer your questions because they intentionally misrepresent what I wrote.

For example, you wrote “The idea that you’ve put forward is that anyone deviating from 100% white is automatically nonwhite.”

That is not at all what I wrote. Among people and institutions that discriminate against individuals and groups based upon their perceived race, where ‘whites’ hold the power, anyone perceived as being non-white will be the target of discrimination.

        • clay

Uh, no, at least not any longer. My sister and I have the same ancestry. Everyone first assumes I’m white and my sister is Mexican/Mestizo. It’s based on our skin and hair color, not our grandparents.

    • People4Humanity

      ^up^vote^ for ‘hypodescent’

    • Silver Badger

Thank you for the new word.

  • my first reaction is “So?”

the browning of murka is obvious to anyone with eyes. been going on for a while now. not just in terms of people of latin heritage, either.

the right wing and theocrats in this country are so stupid. they made abortion and birth control harder to get, for the poor. they deny immigrants proper paperwork so they can’t receive health services, including reproductive services.

they think this will magically make millions more white babies. it does, but it also makes brown babies. who are marrying and mating with white people all over the place, from what i can tell.

this has been increasingly obvious to me and i’ve lived in the north and the south.

    • McSwagg

Houston has been an “all minority” city for several years now. We have been on the leading edge of this trend.

      • People4Humanity

It’s still not easy to find an Ethiopian restaurant in Houston.

        • McSwagg

I heard there is one, but I have to admit I don’t know where it is. My best guess is that it would be on the southwest side of the city.

          • People4Humanity

I live in Houston, too. If there is any “boots on the ground” work to do on the HERO issue, I have time in July & August.

        • brian

One of the better reasons to visit Mpls. But not reason enough to visit during the winter months (all but July/August)

    • JoeNCA

Mine too. What difference does it make? Are minorities mistreated or something?

That rwnj missed a beat: Aztec civilization also had a strong homosexual streak. But it was also strongly militaristic.

In point of fact, most or all of the Central American civilizations were remarkably bloody minded, with human sacrifice common.

I prefer this image of Carlo from Musclematt

    • oh my! snapping open fan

The headline makes it seem like white Latins don’t exist. Latins come in all shapes and colors, not just black and brown.

  • Sporkfighter

Putting people in little boxes? I’m “white”, my wife is Latin, so my kids are what?

    • Ray Butlers

      Gorgeous!

    • Hue-Man

Whatin or Lite or Whispanic? How about just American?

      • hajaxavier

yes! American. that’s exaclty how i identify. I’m Mexican born/raised, US educated, naturalized and proud 0-generation AMERICAN. No hyphens for me thank you very much!

    • AJ

I’m half Middle Eastern, but according to the Census I’m all white. The box thing has been broken for awhile.

  • Octavio

I keep seeing the number 18% used to indicate how many in the USA are hispanic or speak Spanish. I don’t believe it. In my world when we’re in Las Vegas I’d guess it’s about 50% — half — of everyone I meet, talk to, do business with. As for El Lay, I’d guess the percentage is closer to 60%. But that’s just me. I’m brown. (O al menos marrón claro. Como mínimo aparezco bien bronceada. ) 🙂

    • AJ

It’s the rest of the country that drags the number down. The Midwest, for example, doesn’t have a ton of Hispanic people in its major metros outside of Chicagoland. St. Louis, for example, is still a place where the vast majority of people are either white or black.

  • MBear

    so what?

  • TreGibbs

My concern is that in just 24 years, approximately 7 million more people live in CA.

    • clay

But it’s coastal, so they have plenty of water.

      /s

      • JoeNCA

Water, water, everywhere, so let’s all have a drink.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

Interestingly, by 2044 the US will become a majority-minority country. It’s also expected that more people will be of mix race.

  • Gyeo

Considering the history of California, it shouldn’t come to a surprise to conservatives* that it has a huge Latino population and it’s not surprising that the number of Latinos would eclipse non-Latino Whites. What ought to be more surprising is that in some cities/regions of California, East Asians are becoming the majority demographic group.

*Assuming conservatives are taught the same Californian history as everyone else.

  • JCF

    No problema.

    —Anglo native.

  • AJ

I’ve always loved when people flip shit about Mexicans immigrating to “our” country. How soon people forget that, besides just bordering Mexico, states like California used to actually be apart of Mexico.

  • Why are we dividing folks into colored boxes? I thought we are all AMERICANS? If we stopped tracking what color folks are, and took a more color blind eye to things, life just might get better.

  • OMG! You mean latinos actually exist in california despite what Hollywood has us believe? Next, you’ll tell us that there are white people in Detroit, and an actual civilization in West Virginia. Well, I wouldn’t go that far.

  • e jerry powell

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t California and Texas start with that kind of demographic balance before either became US states? I think of it as restoring the order of things after European colonists showed up and started throwing their weight (and their smallpox) around.
