TURKEY: Islamic Youth Group Posts “Kill All Gays” Messages In Ankara

LGBT News Turkey reports:

“Young Islamic Defense” has been putting up posters throughout Ankara. The poster says, “If you see someone engaged in the dirty business of the tribe of Lot, kill the doer and the done both.” Arguing that Muslims should not be silent about this issue, the group has publicly defended their call to massacre on their website: “In order to show that Islam absolutely does not allow this situation, we have shared this hadith, mentioned also in [hadith scholars] Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood: “If you see someone engaged in the dirty business of the tribe of Lot, kill the doer and the done both! Our wish is to learn the attitude Islam demands from us in light of the Qu’ran and the Sunnah, instead of the hodjas who cannot shout out what is rightful on television.” Tribe of Lot refers to the Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah, the twin cities which Prophet Lot was sent to with God’s message and were destroyed by God when the community did not reign in its lust. The trope is often used against LGBT communities in the Muslim world.

The above-linked story blames the ruling party and President Tayyip Erdogan for inciting anti-gay sentiment with last month’s attack on attendees of Istanbul Pride. Ankara is Turkey’s capital.

  • ErikDC

Not a single Muslim majority nation has any substantial legal protections for gays and lesbians. In most, LGBT people are persecuted into invisibility.

    • Gest2016

The more Muslim nations attack gays, the more they will be stuck in a downward spiral. Modern civilization requires the highest levels of education and creativity, and gays have this in spades. You may try and murder gays with your ancient beliefs, but every gay you kill is another nail in our own coffin.

      • crewman

The kind of creativity a society needs to compete in the modern age cannot flourish in a state of fear, totalitarian oppression, or in a system designed to shut down free thinking. That may be why Conservatives in this country are so horrendous with humor.

        • Gest2016

it also can’t flourish in Kentucky. What the Modern world requires is of SUCH a high level, societies with dominant Abrahamic rule are doomed.

In America we cut a deal with Abrahamic religion: You don’t get to control society any longer, but we’ll allow you to live tax free and get fabulously rich. Every once in a while American Religion gets deluded and still think they control the debate. They do not. Republicans only pay them lip service to get elected. And this lip service will increasingly cost the Republicans power — we’re at a tipping point, Religion will soon be demoted to a cultural level equivalent to Alchemy or Astrology — quaint ancient beliefs that a few will believe and indulge in but most will ignore.

    • Ninja0980

Indeed, my friend is married to an Iranian.
If you are LGBT, your best hope for survival is to get the hell out of there ASAP.

      • Gest2016

I do expect the Middle East to suffer from “brain drain” an all that will be left are hordes of murderous barbarians (ISIS) and the vestiges of Colonialism (Saudi Royal family). it’s gonna get ugly.

        • Toasterlad

          “GONNA get”?

          • Gest2016

Yes, I agree. We’re at the beginning stage of a probably 50-year extremely bloody, violent and dispiriting battle between modernity and tribalism. And it’s hard to defeat missile equipped drones with rocks. Sure the barbarians will hijack some of our technology (i.e. 9/11) but long-term they will not win. Modernity, for better or worse, will devour the world.

          • David L. Caster

A central component of your assertion is that modernity can shoot its way out of dealing with its own consequences.

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” ― Albert Einstein

          • Gest2016

David — I agree with you. Modernity might “win” but the cost will be terrible. We have the technology to destroy enemies but not the humanity to build allies.

        • Mawm

I do not fear competition with any society that does not fully employ half of its human resource.

          • David L. Caster

Well, you might want to consider that position in more depth. Poverty and the lack of economic opportunity create a very fertile environment for extremism of every kind. Never underestimate the danger in large numbers of very desperate people.

          • Mawm

My statement was about economic competition, not whether a people could pose a danger or not. However, notwithstanding nuclear weapons, the only threat anti USA forces from the middle east pose to us is if they can goad us into another protracted military presence again and bankrupt our economy. I do think, though, Climate change is a more existential threat than anything the middle east can cook up, again, besides nukes.

          • David L. Caster

Both threats you mention are operative in an environment where people are desperate because desperate people align themselves with those that promise them relief, and many of those have the potential to become very bad actors, indeed.

The distance is not great between severe environmental impact and reduced economic opportunity. See, for instance, the Amazon Basin in Brazil, a slowly developing disaster that has come about in a country that has neither failed as a state nor become noncompetitive.

The point about slowly bankrupting the US by means of sucking the country into another expensive military adventure is a very real threat. When the Chinese Yuan Renminbi becomes a reserve currency, the risk of that could increase if the US cannot avoid expensive wars. In the long run, the United States (and for that matter the rest of the world) cannot shoot its way out of the problems it faces.

      • Ryan Hunter

        Easier said than done.

        • Ninja0980

          Indeed it is.

        • canoebum

A good move would be to cut them off of the internet, whenever and wherever they show up, be it organizations, individuals, sympathizers in more advanced countries. Every tweet, webpage, email, and posting on social media can, and should be found and eliminated. This is possible, if sufficient resources and a dedicated force is set to the task. We could also cut off their access to satellite phones, international phone calls, Telexes, hell…telegrams. There is no sensible reason for allowing these forces of barbarity to continue to use the tools of civilized nations. Once cut off, we can set about killing off the hardcore where they live.

          • David L. Caster

Apparently that hasn’t worked very well against ISIL. See, for instance, here.

Part of the beauty and bane of the Internet is its resistance to the very kind of attack you propose. Nevertheless, it may be anarchists that foil ISIL.

  • MikeinAtl

This, from a religion based on a pedophile “prophet”?? I see your hadith and raise you a Go Fuck Yourself.

    • Gest2016

Christianity would be just as bad if there were no civil society to counterbalance it. The Middle East needs to be civilized in the same way that Germany and Japan were.

      • 2karmanot

Japan was civilized while America was running around in bear skins and fighting with rocks.

        • Gest2016

Yes Japan had a high level of cultural development for thousands of years before North America did. But Japanese culture had (and probably still has) a virulent, violent strain of totalitarianism — they literally believed they were better and more powerful than anybody on earth. America disabused them of that notion.

And yes, America suffers from that same superiority complex today. And someone will probably put America in it’s place too someday.

          • leastyebejudged

            This is simplistic.

When your neighbors frequently try to invade and destroy your culture, you do what you can to survive.

Understanding that goes a long way, and makes things that seem inconceivable actually comprehensible. Like Russia.

          • Six Pins Delores

            “Like Russia”. HA!

          • nazani

Russia was invaded by Napoleon and then by Hitler. Neither instance had anything to do with homophobia.

        • CottonBlimp

If you’re talking about the native americans, they actually had an incredibly advanced civilization before it was wiped out by european diseases.

Did you know it’s now thought that the amazon rainforest is largely a human-made garden?

          • canoebum

“Did you know it’s now thought that the amazon rainforest is largely a human-made garden?”

By whom? That is one of the silliest notions I’ve heard all year, and its been quite a year so far.

          • leastyebejudged

I think I’ll trust researchers opinions over yours, seeings how they actually look at things like evidence.

          • canoebum

Yeah, that’s what I was asking him. What researchers? You’re going to trust their opinions? Fine. Who are you talking about? What bona fide research institution supports this notion?

Is there a display at the American Museum of Natural History depicting how humans created the Amazon Rainforest? Any papers published by Harvard? Princeton? The Sorbonne? The journal Nature? Who’ve you got?

          • Mawm

It’s one theory that’s coming out from finding settlements that predate the rain forest in those areas. The BBC reported it and now a whole lot of people want to believe it. it’s stupid.

          • CottonBlimp

            By whom?

Um, the massive civilization that lived in it for thousands of years before colonization?

Everyone always assumed that the amazon was just some extremely fertile plot of land that was being ruined by humans. Now we’re finding out the exact opposite – since humans were banned from entering protected sites, those areas are withering and nothing new is growing.

It turns out, when we actually looked into it, that the amazon soil is crap. It’s got no nutrients in it to speak of. BUT underneath particularly lush regions of the rainforest is a layer of human-made black mulch more advanced than any fertilizer in modern civilization.

          • canoebum

I’m sorry. But that’s very close to the theories you’ll find on Ancient Aliens. The natural science just doesn’t support such a notion. Perhaps here and there, humans had some effect on localities, but the Amazon rainforest is the most complex ecosystem on Earth. To suggest it is human made is just plain silly.

          • CottonBlimp

But that’s very close to the theories you’ll find on Ancient Aliens.

yeah, aside from all the material evidence I’ve been mentioning.

The amazon likely started as a much smaller forest, largely dependent on minerals blown across the ocean from the deserts of Africa. This was enough for a small forest, but not nearly enough nutrition to sustain a forest of the amazon’s size. The ecosystem would have preexisted, humans simply aided the growth and spreading of native plantlife.

Don’t talk to me about natural sciences if you’ve never heard of plants relying on animals to proliferate. Freaking bees can do that much.

          • Mawm

            No

          • Six Pins Delores

A lovely notion none the less.

          • i didn’t see any links and i skimmed this mini argument twice. put up or ancient alien, folks.

        • Steverino

What did the rocks do to offend them?
          : )

  • Gyeo

So they’re citing someone’s interpretation of someone else’s interpretation of moral law as the basis of their own moral law. LOL

    • Billanddogs

Yep, kind of like the fundies do here.

  • Gest2016

Be careful ignorant Turkish bigots: Access to all the fruits of modernity requires putting aside your ancient hatreds. One day Tim Cook will come and take your iPhones away.

    • Gustav2

Or Twitter and Facebook will cancel your acct.

      • Gest2016

Seriously. The Middle East / extremists islam seems to have a death wish. And their wish will be granted.

  • Polterguest

That’s unpossible. They are the religion of peace donchu know!

  • JT

And these people want entry into the EC and acceptance by Europe.

    • canoebum

They’re our NATO ally. Go figure.

  • KQCA

It says “Turkey” but they have meant some place like “Missouri.” The lines are blurred between that group and American gay-haters.

    • Mawm

The only thing different from these in Turkey and ours here is that we have a very strong system of courts and govt that adhere to our constitution, and the troglodytes know they can’t get away with it.

      • gaymex

We can hope that the courts will continue to support us…but look at the insanity and immaturity of the Supremes who voted against equality.

        • Mawm

I’m not talking about marriage equality here.I’m talking about not being subjected to death squads roaming the streets.

  • Princess Lardass

“…engaged in the dirty business of the tribe of Lot…”

    You mean father-daughter incest?

    • AtticusP

So many silly myths. I have a hard time keeping them straight.

    • Charles in Bloomington

I was going to mention that too. And in the story, wasn’t Lot the good guy anyway? So we would all want to do as the “tribe of Lot” does.

  • Ninja0980

Looks like the same stuff we’ve been seeing from “loving” Christians the past couple of weeks.
    Are they comparing notes?

  • Toasterlad

Funny…the Islamic apologist crowd keep telling us about secular Turkey is…

    • Doug105

Was, President Tayyip Erdogan has done all he can to prepare a islamist takeover.
Part of why I’m leary of a palestine state, even as I know Israel is in the wrong.

  • LovesIrony

Is tony perkins calling this an olive branch to Christians?

  • AtticusP

Tonette Perkins must be creaming his jeans over this one…

    • TreGibbs

      I hear that she’s a squirter…

  • crewman

    It’s terrorism, and it’s disgusting.

  • Ryan Hunter

We were contemplating a trip to Turkey and Greece for later this year. We will still go to Greece but called our agent and cancelled Turkey. They will reap the profits of their hate.

    • Gest2016

I would be wary of Turkey right now. Basically, we’re seeing the final collapse of Imperial / Colonial rule — depending on your perspective this is either good or bad. The Barbarians are not only at the gate, they’e come into the house, and the world is no longer entirely safe for Westerners.

      • Ninja0980

It never was, but now the floodgates are open thanks to George W.

        • gaymex

I’m glad I traveled to that part of the world when I was younger…it’s really a sad thing for the young today that they will be so unwelcome in so many places.

      • gaymex

My sister, who has lived and taught at a university there for over 30 years, is leaving with most members of her extended family. The only family members remaining will be those who are indispensable for the family businesses. Even the family members remaining in Turkey have definite exit plans should things get hot. I love Turkey, but this is not a place to visit right now.

    • gaymex

I agree with your thoughts about travel to Turkey right now, but Greece may also be a problem if the financial mess isn’t figured out.

  • Sounds like someone’s trying to earn their ‘let’s start another religious war’ merit badge.

  • As nations fail, economies stagnate, jobs evaporate, infrastructure crumbles, faith in authority falls apart, graft runs riot, and national identity is threatened by inflation and social decline, you’ll see a lot of these bug-eyed finger-pointers crawling out of their holes, waving their books and pointing their fingers and screaming that we have LOST OUR WAY and NEED TO RETURN TO GOD instead of taking any responsibility for the political failure of their leaders and themselves.

    • Mawm

This is the only thing I fear could undo our progress in the US, if we have a prolonged period of economic depression. People want scapegoats in those times.

      • It’s why the right-wing pray for IS to invade or a zombie apocalypse. It’s they’re only road to victory.

  • Mawm

    Bring it, bitch.

  • Doug105

    []

    • Veylon

I’m sure we can easily come up with however many dozen Biblical verses on the wickedness and dire fate of unbelievers. The self-righteous (or any religion) like to toss them around.

  • Doug105

Its only going to get worse there is the army can’t drive them out of power this time because President Tayyip Erdogan has done all he can to defang the army that acted to keep the country secular when this started before.

    • leastyebejudged

      LOL, you just described Christianity.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

All religions, really, though not necessarily with the same degree of violence.

        • Bill_Perdue

Correct. American empire builders and their NATO allies, whose mass murder you so slavishly admire are, after the Germans and the Japanese imperialists of the last century, far and away the worst terrorists in recent history.

People like you who ignore Vietnam and Iraq are the same sort of pro-war apologists who make excuses for the murder of almost 30 millions Soviet citizens in WW2 and the Holocaust.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh yes, I do so admire them

The anti-semite, bunkestadt troll returns to stalk sweet & kindly me…..I feel so special……as in I need to take a shower after being stalked by this creep, special.

            Hugs Billy

          • Bill_Perdue

You’re a rabid Islamophobe, aka, a racist who supports the existence of the zionist colony in Palestine.

No shower will clean up your sick racism. .

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Billy, sweety, moronic boy that you are, you do know that Islam is NOT a race, don’t you? If you don’t, please consider cracking open a dictionary. As for being a racist, well, you’re own bigotry and shameful anti-semetic stance makes it clear who the actual racist is here, so I won’t debate that with you since, let’s face it, you’re a mobius loop of stupid.

As for my shower, perhaps you misunderstood…..I’m cleaning off the stench that is you dear, you, no one or nothing else. But you go ahead, keep harping and howling at the moon…..I’ll just go on with my happy life. Hell, the only reason I’m on this much with you is because I’m under the weather and have to stay in for a few days. Not to worry, once I’m back to my fabulous, amazingly bright and happy self, I’ll go back to ignoring you. For now, you’re a mild diversion, much like a small toy to play with until I get bored.

            Toodles.

By the way, if I’m so distasteful to you, why do you keep coming back for more? Hmmmmmm

          • Bill_Perdue

Why do you keep stalking anti-racists and anti-imperialists with your sick comments.

            Because it’s all you’ve got.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

NO, I told you, I’m under the weather and I need some entertainment to keep me occupied…..and watching you come back for more and more is hilariously funny.

By the way, may I remind you that it is YOU who keeps jumping onto my comment threads, why not just ignore me? Oh, admit it, you love the attention.

          • Bill_Perdue

            Another racist heard from.

Racism and racists infest zionist society and lead them to favor genocide against Arabs and to drive out African refugees. That racism is based on the colonial nature of zionist society and is common among colonial interlopers throughout history.

“Moshe Feiglin, the deputy speaker of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, has published a plan for the total destruction of the Palestinian people in Gaza. His detailed plan, which calls for the use of concentration camps, amounts to direct and public incitement to genocide – a punishable crime under the Genocide Convention.” http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/concentrate-and-exterminate-israel-parliament-deputy-speakers-gaza-genocide-plan

Feiglin is not only advocate for genocide. “Just days before the seven-week siege of Gaza this past July and August that left some 2,000 Palestinians dead, 11,000 injured and 100,000 homeless, Israeli lawmaker Ayelet Shaked, a senior figure in the Jewish Home Party that is part of Israel’s ruling coalition, posted on Facebook that “the entire Palestinian people is the enemy . . . including its elderly and its women, its cities and its villages, its property and its infrastructure. … Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. Nor is zionist racism confined to Palestinians and Arabs. “Violent Anti-African Race Riot Rocks Israel, Black Men and Women Beaten – Violence surged in the streets of Tel Aviv as a 1000-strong protest against African immigrants seeking asylum in Israel turned violent.” http://atlantablackstar.com/2012/05/26/violent-anti-african-race-riot-rocks-israel-black-men-and-women-beaten/

“Just days before the seven-week siege of Gaza this past July and August that left some 2,000 Palestinians dead, 11,000 injured and 100,000 homeless, Israeli lawmaker Ayelet Shaked, a senior figure in the Jewish Home Party that is part of Israel’s ruling coalition, posted on Facebook that “the entire Palestinian people is the enemy . . . including its elderly and its women, its cities and its villages, its property and its infrastructure.” The post went on to declare that “behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Your rabid racism doesn’t.

The Palestinians have nothing to negotiate. Palestine belongs exclusively to them.

The BDS movement is also gaining strength among students, youth and most importantly, among trade unions here, in Europe and especially in South Africa. “Workers Against Israel – Nothing is more crucial to the success of BDS than the movement’s relationship with organized labor. … but also to the possibility of direct action posing an ever graver threat to business as usual for Israel, particularly when organized labor is on board. … Until now, no one had ever kept an Israeli cargo ship from unloading for two consecutive days; we blocked the Zim Piraeus for four. … The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) has called on workers worldwide, and Bay Area workers in particular, to refuse to facilitate the commerce of Zim and other Israeli companies as part of BDS. This call was supported by COSATU, the Coalition of South African Trade Unions.” https://www.jacobinmag.com/201

During the attempt by the French to continue their colony in Algeria, the left rejected calls to force the NLF, جبهة التحرير الوطني or Jabhet Al-Taḥrīr Al-Waṭanī, to negotiate with the French colonialists. Algeria belongs to the Algerians exclusively and they defeated the French, forcing them out. Almost a million French colonialist were forced to leave.

During the Vietnam war, a war characterized by a US invasion to ensure that Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were forced into neo-colonial submission by the US, leftists rejected the idea of calling for negotiations. The Vietnamese had nothing to negotiate – Vietnam belongs to the Vietnamese. The Vietnamese NLF forced the Americans out, defeating them convincingly, with the aid of the US antiwar movement, especially the GI antiwar Movement.

The Palestinians have nothing to negotiate. Palestine belongs exclusively to them.

You forgot mass murder and apartheid. Typical. And yet you still think it’s a legitimate state.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

LOLZ Whether I think it’s legitimate or not is irrelevant to the reality that it exists. You remind of a Christian, only in reverse. You refuse to believe something exists even though it’s right there in front of you. Israel was artificially created in 1948 and, like it or not, it’s now a reality. I can either play at dumb, as you are wont to do, or I can live in the real world…something I choose to do. I’m no fan of the country, there are many, many things wrong with it; but, I also know that it has many thing right with it. I don’t have to like it to acknowledge those facts……..oh, but of course, facts aren’t what you’re really all about. You’re a rigid ideologue that, like his far right-wing counterparts, sees everything in stern black and white. Such is the sign of a weak mind. (cue the usual comebacks…such as they are)

Sigh, you’re so entertaining Billy, thank you for being the diversion I so need while being laid up at home. (oh, my husbotter just came in with lunch, toodles)

Who pays this racist pig, who has no facts, just lies.

” Polls show that Israeli youth are becoming less tolerant and more racist with each passing year. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Israeli teachers are now afraid to even bring up the topic of human rights, for fear of setting off a racist free-for-all in the classroom. And yet, the Education Ministers appointed by Netanyahu have consistently tinkered with the curriculum, hoping to create new generations of Jews even more sectarian than previous ones. This year, Israeli children began to learn about the Nazi Holocaust in kindergarten.

As Religious Services Minister in the last Netanyahu government, Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett created a new bureaucratic body, the Jewish Identity Administration, to proselytize Orthodox Judaism to secular Israelis. Now that Bennett has been made Education Minister in the new Netanyahu government, he will not need to make use of a proxy organization in order to indoctrinate Israeli youth. Poll: Half of Israeli high schoolers oppose equal rights for Arabs… Nearly half of Israeli teens surveyed say they would refuse to evacuate West Bank settlements http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/poll-half-of-israeli-high-schoolers-oppose-equal-rights-for-arabs-1.264564

What purpose do these traditional supernatural religions really serve anymore?

How they’ve always served, as a control mechanism.

Another example of religionists saying anything they want about you as a gay (wo)man and/or non-Muslim.

    Go fuck yourselves.

I think the word people are struggling for is a simple one that goes underutilized these days.

But it is specific, and precise.

    Superstition.

  • delk

Different book, same stupidity and hate.

  • Bill_Perdue

islamist politicians use islam as a cover for their reactionary politics, just as Democrats and Republicans do in the US.

Religion is the enemy and that’s particularly true with islamist scum in Turkey and christer scum in other parts of the world. In Turkey and Egypt the LGBT communities played prominent roles in attacking the right wing governments of Endogen and Al-Sisi and islamists want to punish our brothers and sisters there and to scapegoat us.

We should react the way our sisters and brothers did in Mexico and loudly condemn islamists, not forgetting to add to the list of our enemies christers and judaists.

Perhaps Pam Geller and these thugs could get together and have a little talk……yeah, that would be fun to watch.

In all seriousness, the world needs less religion, not more (I personally would prefer no religion, but you can’t always get what you want) Islam, specifically radical Islam, must be curtailed, as should any Theist Cult. They are anathema to freedom, liberty, thought and self-determination.

It’s a shame this is happening in Turkey, a country I have visited many times in the past……truly a beautiful place, now made less so by religion.

Religion truly is the most toxic of poisons.

    • David L. Caster

Religion is an intellectual virus. Sometimes it produces mild symptoms, sometimes not. No matter what, it is a kind of ailment that can sicken mankind.

What is needed is a kind of intellectual vaccine to prevent the worst of the symptoms of this ailment, if not prevent it altogether.

      • no one will read this so late on a thread, but the answer is already known. proven by that stuff we call science.

educate women and girls, and give them birth control. it’s really that simple. microloans, schools and reproductive medicine pretty much make crazy religious crap go away, in 1-2 generations.

      • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

The problem with such a blanket statement is that:
        1) It is just as arrogant or moreso than religious arguments; it presumes that because one or a hundred different religious beliefs are wrong that therefore only no religious belief at all can be correct (e.g., because the christians and the hindus and the muslims and the ancient vikings, believe/d in a god or gods and they are/were ‘wrong’, therefore there must be no god/s). But no matter what clever arguments they come up with, nobody can conclusively disprove the existence of “god” (whatever that might be, because nobody can seem to agree on a definition besides those that already have a preconceived agenda for defining “god”).
        2) It also presumes that the only way we can “know” something is by sensory evidence, when science itself has demonstrated that this is not necessarily so.
        3) Worst of all, it presumes that intelligence and some kind of belief are mutually exclusive, when this is so false it is ridiculous; see the writings of Einstein, Pasteur, Mendel, Pascal, Marconi, Newton, Maxwell, James, Planck, Faraday, Copernicus, etc., etc. – an incredibly long list could be constructed of people who were convinced of some kind of superior intelligence in the universe and who were an order of magnitude smarter than anybody commenting on this blog (as much as I enjoy the very witty comments on JMG).

        • David L. Caster

If you read very much of my comment history here, you will find that I am very tolerant of religion. I really don’t care what people believe, what fantasies they make up, what superstitions they have, or how many gods are in their pantheons. There is a reason for that: it really doesn’t matter as long as their beliefs do not ripen into action that is a demonstrable impediment to the advancement of civilization and the well-being of the planet we occupy.

All of the respectable scientists and thinkers you can name acknowledge that their faiths, if they have any, don’t necessarily explain what man currently cannot. In the grand scheme of things, religion explains nothing and usually makes no account for what is already known. All religions and their respective orthodoxies taken together cannot explain the basis of all being.

Interestingly, we don’t need to care where we came from, how we got here, or the origins of the universe. Our daily existence does not require these things be known. Nevertheless, we seem driven by an irresistible curiosity to have a story for what we observe, though religion will not provide one if we want to know with any certainty. Even the rigorous process of science is not certain in the positive space of theories it lays claim to, but it’s the best we have. Science only seems to know for sure a theory is wrong just when no properly conducted experiment will confirm the predictions it makes.

We will continue to discover elements of the fundamental workings of the universe and yet may never actually know everything about it. Though some may ascribe creation to a god or gods, that will not explain anything about reality. Some things have already been proven to be fundamentally unknowable in our most reliable system of reasoning (mathematics). There are still far more things we can but do not yet—and may never—know. No religion will change that.

So, really, what difference does it make if people want to believe in things whose existence they can never test for or explain? Religion seems to only matter to anybody when it can be appealed to for an excuse, a crutch or an income. Human beings are already altruistic by nature, just as many other animals are. We can be good without the superstition and we know when we are being bad without it too. We also know when we really don’t know, though we may not always know what we don’t know.

Even if there were a god or gods, it would probably be blasphemous to presume anything about what it or they are thinking. At the risk of that, I would assume that it or they want us to use our meager allotment of years to enjoy and discover what has been made and not waste our time imagining what the thinking was when it or they created the universe. I’ll go further by presuming we should not be preventing others from enjoying and discovering what existence and conscious awareness bring to life, whether or not they have to make up things to cope with it.

Loved reading your reply. Very well thought out and written. Thanks.

            You are, of course, welcome.

        • Polterguest

No one has to disprove bullshit. It’s up to you to prove the preposterous. Nice try though. The rest of your new agey irrational crap doesn’t even need to be responded to.

          • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

Your response is just nonsense, insults and hostility. Because apparently I somehow threatened your belief system. Yeah, I said it. So stop spraying your doctrine and trying to force your (dis)belief system on everybody else, insecure little man.

          • Polterguest

Please keep your diseased superstitious lifestyle choice to yourself. In reality-based worlds, the onus to prove nonsense falls on you. It’s not up to educated people to disprove that your “god” doesn’t exist just like we don’t have to disprove that Santa Claus, fairies, or ghosts don’t exist.

I thought the whole point was that Lot was the one guy in Sodom who WASN’T gay. (As evidenced by his lovely daughters, whom he graciously offered up to be raped by the mob before giving up and claiming them for himself.) Calling gay people the “tribe of Lot” is incredibly stupid.

  • Ginger Snap

So much work to be done on this rock we call earth. Someday humanity will be free from religion, war and hate. I wish I could be alive to see it but I’ll take what we have gained in my short lifetime.

    • Mawm

I’m stoked about what’s possible in the near future. I never dreamed when I was a little gay child that we would have won the progress we have made to date.
I was telling my husband that I feel like the christers are in the rear view mirror now. Yes, we still have a lot of work to do, but we’ve driven a stake in the monster’s heart. It just doesn’t realize it’s been mortally wounded. The poetic justice is that the lie that they told that we wanted to destroy Christianity will end up becoming true, but only because of the way they reacted to us with hate instead of love. Their hate is what will end them for good.

On a positive note: they actually have to say this. Hating gays is something that’s no longer ingrained since birth and accepted unquestioningly. They have to make a case now where they didn’t have to before.
