Matt Baume: What You Need To Know

  • Luis De California

    Congratulations, everyone! ๐Ÿ˜€

Colombia’s court case is later this year and all the Colombians on my feed are already telling their Constitutional Court to take note. Northern Ireland has also turned to the courts to marry. I predict those two to be next unless Australia gets a free vote and snatches at the last minute. Also pending is Slovenia’s Court deciding if the referendum should happen or not.

Ever since Mexico’s court ordered all judges (not clerks) to be on gays sides, little by little states are coming around.

    • Gene

THANKS…you are goddamn good at this..and I work with data for a living. really..you are GOOD, and a constant source of good info. It is much appreciated.
(you are also young and cute as hell..go find a rich handsome decent man, marry him and live happily ever after..ok? good)
      ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Luis De California

Haha believe me, I’m on the look out for a gentleman ๐Ÿ™‚

        • oikos

          You will find one, handsome!

        • Gene

I have no doubt you will ๐Ÿ™‚
          details when event occurs..!
were I a young and single man …heheheh
          ๐Ÿ™‚
          (note…46..going gray…lol!)

    • Steven Leahy

And Mexico is getting bluer ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Luis De California

More than half the Mexican states introduced a marriage bill ever since this month’s court decision. Some may relent first and let registries marry couples then pass a bill because couples are now suing for damages and we all know politicians hate losing money ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • clay

Are you saying the GOP are shitty politicians?

          • OrliJoe in Fla

But they are, Blanche, they are…

    • clay

Gawd, If I were Italy, I’d be embarrassed by Slovenia beating us to equality, but then, I felt the same about Argentina here in the US.

  • Phil in Colorado

WHAT THE HELL?!?! I go away camping for a few days with my husband and kids to cell-phone-signalless-land, and I come back and find we’re married everywhere in the country! Well this is a good day….. ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Sk3ptic

      Welcome to actual civilization.

      • Phil in Colorado

It did get a little more civilized, didn’t it? ๐Ÿ™‚

    • lymis

Hey, could you maybe plan another camping trip soon? Maybe you’ll come back to ENDA!

      • JCF

        ^This!

      • Phil in Colorado

        I’m on it!

    • another_steve

      Lol.

My man and I had this “moment” together, this morning, when we realized that the county clerks in rural Alabama and Mississippi are now legally obligated to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

First the interracial couples, now us.

When, oh when, will it all stop? Lolol.

      • Phil in Colorado

Are you an interracial gay couple? Watching their heads explode would be pretty cool…..

    • Phil in Colorado

And thank you, Matt Baume! You’ve had our backs and provided us with great information since the beginning!

  • LonelyLiberal

Marvelous! I hope we continue to hear from him now that we’ve caught up to the Constitution!

Interestingly, the argument he brings to the table makes the four dissenters look absolutely ridiculous. Which is a little frightening when one of the dissenters is the Chief Justice and whined like a little bitch in his dissent.

    (And yeah, Matt’s uber hot).

    • javel99

      Agree: “Matt’s uber hot”
Remember when some a**hole was all up in a tizzy-fit because Matt was not the proper spoke person for the macho gays according to him? Well, my comment to him did not post for some reason. It was mainly for Matt and it was this: “Funny how when Matt puts his big dick up an uber-masculine man’s butthole NO ONE is complaining!” Uuuuu… Hi Matt!

  • Steven Leahy

    Isn’t it beautiful?

    • EdmondWherever

And quite telling. Those who oppose gay rights should take a close look at who they are allying themselves with.

    • Corey

There is still some work though since Louisiana, Mississippi and Kansas are putting up a losing fight.

      http://klfy.com/2015/06/26/la-clerk-of-courts-office-same-sex-marriage-licenses-will-not-be-issued-immediately/

      • Marc

Not so strangely, two of those three were in my Last to Equality list.

    • Prion

I’d like to see a blue dot at McMurdo, Antarctica – somewhere on the far right near New Zealand ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • NZArtist

At least New Zealand made it to that map. So often we fall off the map.

        • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

We know, love and respect you, even from — geographically — the antipodes.

      • dinosaurtime

I lived there for a year! Somebody should add the blue dot.

    • Gene

there is a lot of blue on that globe…
and a lot of way to go.
      but yes…SOOO beautiful. ‘
now, if Russia can come out of under the control of the douch
and india and Australia get their shit together…and china come out of its backwardness…Africa..well..much to do, as with demographic growth, they will be the center of world population growth…but still..yeah..its..BEAUTIFUL!

      • Ginger Snap

I bet we see China move towards Equality before Russia and most African countries. Peace, freedom and love.

        • clay

Equality will continue to spread through the Americas, Europe, and in the Pacific, with Australia, Singapore, South Korea, China, Thailand, and India, before change in Russia, Southwest Asia, or Africa. Even Israel, Lebanon, and Turkey are stuck between their traditions and ruling parties.

    • KnownDonorDad

Hopefully Mexico and Australia will be filled in very soon. Europe needs work, too.

    • BlueberriesForMe

I think if a rainbow flag is planted on Antartica, it will turn blue.

  • Bill T.

I’m still waiting for a report from Texas that Rick Scarborough has set himself on fire. Someone please let me know if they detect the smell of burning porta-pottys in the morning.

    • Steven Leahy

      I’ll bring the matches:-)

  • Nax

I hope John Roberts gets to see this so that he might learn how marriage is a constitutional issue.

    • bambinoitaliano

Only John Roberts? The entire country especially those wing nuts and those self appointed leaders better learn this very basic constitution. How can they claim to be Americans when they don’t even know the foundation of a 100 year old law?

    • BlueberriesForMe

Roberts statement about the decision having “nothing to do with the Constitution” is in total contrast to what Matt presents here. Would that we could put Matt in Roberts place on the court.

  • EdmondWherever

    He’s fast!

  • Doug105
  • another_steve

I predict that in 20 years or so, same-sex marriage will be a non-issue for the vast vast majority of Americans — just as interracial marriage is today.

As more and more of us marry our same-sex partners, more and more people will come to see us as just “that nice couple next door.” That, plus the Glory of the Life Expectancy Table — by and through which the older generation of today (which includes me, btw) will be compost for the worms. For most younger people — even today — marriage equality is a non-issue.

    We’ve won.

    Life is good.

    • Gene

      yup. you just..nailed it.
      ๐Ÿ™‚
not bad for when we were kids, and it was (dramatic music) “the love that dared not speak its name!”
      I am sooooo enjoying this.

    • KnownDonorDad

I think it will be sooner than that. Back when our side had 36 states, the biggest reaction was angry internet comments and a pathetic protest in front of some wedding by the Benham twins’ crazy dad.

      • another_steve

I want the Benham twins to submit to me and be my slaves.

I’ve never done the dog collar porn thing, but I’m not quite dead yet and I’m willing to give it a go.

        • gaymex

You’ll need to first start with a flea and tick collar then wait a couple of weeks before you switch to leather.

          • another_steve

Given my life expectancy, sweetie, I’m goin’ right to the leather…

          • gaymex

I totally understand. I’ve just never been that sort of a risk taker. To be safe, just rinse everything–before and after–in holy water and you should be good to go.

          • clay

He could just . . . shave them.

    • Talisman

If you think interracial marriage is a non-issue, you’ve never been to The South. I’ve seen families torn apart and shunned by the community because a white girl starts dating a black boy (or vice versa). While the animus is somewhat less, there have even been instances where couples involving white and Hispanic partners are shunned – that has happened in my own family (my sister and her 3rd husband).

Almost inevitably, someone will remark, “I don’t care about the couple. It’s the kids. They are going to face so much because of the choices made by the parents”.

The ruling today isn’t going to stop the hate; it’s just going to drive is underground so that it festers.

      • another_steve

        I hear ya, Talisman.

I view societal objections to interracial and same-sex marriage as largely generational issues that will eventually fade to near-zero.

Kids growing up today are largely over it. Their kids will be even more over it and their kids’ kids will be nearly totally over it.

All social justice issues follow similar trajectories. Think slavery, women’s right to vote, etc.

In the fullness of time, the naysayers leave the scene.

      • Bluto

        But black boys are delicious.

    • Octavio

I predict that in 20 years (or less) I will be dead.

      • another_steve

Yes, hon. If I make it another 20 months it’ll be a miracle the likes of which have given birth to major world religions.

But we have to live — all of us — as if today is our last day.

        Some might consider that morbid.

I consider it practical and wise.

  • BaddogLtd

From the Log Cabin Republican website today. God these collaborator/Motherfuckers are sooo fucking delusional!!!!! – “This is a watershed moment for the LGBT rights movement โ€” one that had its genesis on the center-right”

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Claiming that either the moment or the movement had its genesis on the center-right is not only delusional, but clearly offensive.

      • BaddogLtd

Right? It does offend me. Incredibly.

      • gaymex

Offensive as hell. They’ll be celebrating their victory this weekend with the hotel boys and Sullivan in NYC.

        • clay

They think Sully invented the idea.

  • Gustav2

Damn, here I thought heterosexuals couldn’t get married anymore………..

    • PLAINTOM

      Someone should tell Bristol ๐Ÿ™‚

      • LonelyLiberal

She got knocked up long before today’s ruling, so there’s no need to tell her. She’s just a hypocritical slut*.

        * Normally the word slut is neutral or worn with a badge of pride (it takes time and effort to be a slut, after all). In her case, no.

        • PLAINTOM

Until there is a paternity test to prove otherwise, I am assuming Josh Duggar is the baby daddy.

          • bkmn

That’s what I heard too, on the internets.

          • LonelyLiberal

No way in hell. Bristol is at least ten years too old for Josh. Twenty years too old to be the perfect age for Josh.

          • sherman

Then I guess it was a surprise to Bristol, who slept through the whole thing.

          • PLAINTOM

That’s pretty close to what she claimed the first time. He got me drunk, she just failed to mention she brought the booze.

          • People4Humanity

That just means she is boring in bed.

          • yetanotherLaura

Nah, she’s way too old for him. He only likes ’em pre-pubescent. And related to him.

          • Nigel

i doubt it she is too old.

          • Then you haven’t been paying attention.

        • oikos

Slut is earned. Barstool is a mere skank of the lowest order.

          • 2amor

Barstool, LOL I am so stealing that one!!

          • D. J.

Barstool the brawling skank. Yep. Fits.

        • Ginger Snap

I’m a slut and it really was one of the toughest badges to earn. Peace, freedom and love.

      • bambinoitaliano

Why? It’s not like she is genetically predispose to education. My late cat possess way more intelligence than she will ever learn in her life time.

        • PLAINTOM

She was worse than home schooled, she was Palin schooled.

          • bambinoitaliano

Which means zero school. She squat and show her whoo har and drop a kid.

      • JCF

        LOL

  • Paul

Just think, a mere 7 years ago, this happened…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK4zbiR90DE

    • JCF

What a night that was. I so wanted to JUST BE HAPPY re Obama’s election, and this BS was a slap-in-the-face.

  • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

You gotta love Justice Anthony Kennedy, every June 26, the date of his momentous decisions in Lawrence, Windsor and Obergefell.
    .

    • Dreaming Vertebrate

It’s almost like there is some mysterious confluence of the planets every few years on the 26th of June.

      • lymis

One that seems to be speeding up!

      • BobSF_94117

I think it’s a conspiracy to make legal trivia questions easier to answer.

    • BaddogLtd

      Now THAT’S a good dog!

      • JCF

In this next few days, someone needs to go to a shelter, rescue a Boxer (or mix—or any dog needing rescuing), and name it “Kennedy” (It is so ordered!)

        • Robincho

Or, as the kidz say nowadaze, “It is, like,
          SO ordered”…

      • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

It takes one to know one… even if he claims he’s a bad dog. Let me scratch you behind the ears.

        • BaddogLtd

Heh heh. To quote Jessica Rabbit “I’m not bad, I’m just drawn that way”. I may have a few minor quirks though…

          • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

I find the last question intriguing:
Do you lick your genitals in public?

          • trouble94114

I believe the best answer for that is. “Only after a great deal of yoga” or “I would if I could’

          • Robincho

And just why does he do that? Because he CAN, goddamnit!…

    • bkmn

I have to think the majority of SCOTUS insisted on adding this day to the announcement cycle.

    • oikos

The 26th of June is now our day. It should become a national holiday.

      • bambinoitaliano

It’s one of those where were you on June 26th 2015.

        • Ginger Snap

On my way home from work stick in traffic on my phone where its illegal to be on a handheld device. Freedom and love.

          • gaymex

Drive carefully and live to celebrate big time this weekend.

        • Paul

I was in bar prep class, and I shouted “YES!” right before the lecturer was about to begin. I clarified that I was on SCOTUSblog and that Amy had just announced the marriage ruling. He then said “Well…that changes a bit of today’s lecture.” (Today, we were covering con law).

          • Robincho

Oh. I thought you were in Martini 101…
I never COULD pass a bar!

      • lymis

Gosh, maybe we should start to plan Gay Pride celebrations somewhere around the end of June!

        • oikos

Maybe we should have a holiday. Pride was before we had any rights and while an important part of our history we now have 3 rulings affirming our rights on this day.

          • clay

We’ve already gone from protests to riots to marches to parades to festivals. What comes after festival?

        • Robincho

Your gift for understatement cannot be adequately overstated…

    • KnownDonorDad

Yay Dog Supreme Court! The boxer really does resemble Kennedy.

    • BaddogLtd

      O.K. I can’t resist a good dog meme. Meet Ruth Beagle Ginsburg (Yes I know she’s not a beagle ; )

      • KnownDonorDad

        Bulldog Scalia.

  • Ray

Since the video isn’t captioned, I’ll just wait for Matt’s written explanation of what I need to know. Hope it’s not time-critical.

    • LonelyLiberal

It’s not time critical. It’s an explanation of what’s likely to happen in the near future (some resistance, some acceptance, a lot of whining), and a cut from a past video explaining why marriage is integral to the Constitution and why marriage equality was inevitable.

    • BlueberriesForMe

He spoke a lot about the 14th amendment and how it has been cited over the last 130 years in re: to marriage.

  • bambinoitaliano

On a side note, have anyone seen this? I’m not American but I got verklempt and feel so proud some how. You Americans stop screwing with my emotion! I need bags of saline iv through my veins to keep from dehydrating all day.
    https://youtu.be/VYHuF9tIbpQ

    • BearEyes

Saw that live on MSNBC. They stopped talking for a bit to listen. Very nice.

      • Gustav2

Yes, it made me wonder how many Pete Williams had dated.. I mean knows. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • sherman

If you’ll stop Eros Ramazzotti from screwing with my libido.

  • sherman

It’s this type of extremist rhetoric that facilitates Charleston, Matthew Shephard, etc.

    https://twitter.com/charliespiering/status/614527052226629632

Correction: he said “some of the darkest 24 hours”. See, it wasn’t so bad.

    • BearEyes

      Stay vigilant, people.

      • bkmn

I agree. Everyone needs to keep their eyes and ears open this weekend, especially at Pride events. The morons are pissed and unstable.

        • BearEyes

          Exactly.

    • LonelyLiberal

Pearl Harbor? September 11th? Assassination of Lincoln?

      Hyperbole does not become her.

      • clay

        nothing does

  • Lexi/Ikom

Why can’t I like this more than once? Excellent video, too bad most of the bigots will be to stubborn to even watch it and gain some knowledge.

    • pickypecker

GAH! you used the words bigots and knowledge in the same sentence. for shame!

  • Ed Burrow
    • Gustav2

They will avoid the inevitable as long as possible,

    • oikos

What fucking morons. The SCOTUS ruling supersedes anything the lower court has or can rule. Fuck you Piyush.

      • Gustav2

The lower court does have to lift the stay. It is just a formality now.

    • LonelyLiberal

I predict a sharply worded court order will be along very, very soon for him.

    • Nychta

IMHO, one of the best comments on the NOLA site:

      jediyoda 9 minutes ago

I guess if a train is coming, you have a right to stand on the tracks. Not going to stop the train though…..

      • Corey

And other comment of Piyush under attack

      • clay

They get to prove their faith.

  • Steven Leahy

Somebody posted yesterday that many of the big LGBT-related decisions happened on June 26. Coincidence?

  • NZArtist

Thank you for a great presentation on today’s ruling.
Matt, I can see the barely suppressed glee coming through. Well done on keeping us all informed on progress toward this watershed day.
So… are you out of a job now?

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

After listening to Matt’s simple but dead on depiction of Marriage, Equality and the history of it all, I would think most would think ” How was this decision NOT 9/0 ” ??

    • LonelyLiberal

Because rats. Er, RATS. Roberts, Alito, Thomas, and Scalia. Who never met a minority group they didn’t want to stomp on. Except for Scalia and the Catholics, Thomas and mixed marriage…

      • Ed Burrow

        love the acronym :))

  • Gene

I so love my husband. yet…
I would do such awful, awful, deeply enjoyable things with this little otter who has done so much for us.
thanks for all you have done for us Matt.

  • gaymex

Matt, Thanks for keeping us informed through all of this. You get better and better.

  • GreatLakeSailor

One of my US Senators is RoJo }:-(
My US Representative is Paul Ryan }:-(
My Gubbnah is Scott Walker }}:-(
So it is with some pride that I offer this from my Wisconsin State AssemblyPerson, Minority Leader Peter Barca:

MADISON โ€“ Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) released the following statement on todayโ€™s U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing for full marriage equality in every state in the nation:

โ€œTodayโ€™s Supreme Court ruling represents a historic victory for millions of couples across the country who have waited years or even decades to enjoy the freedom to marry. One of our nationโ€™s founding principles is that all are created equal, and I am pleased to see that principle upheld today by the highest court in the land.

โ€œI also want to thank all the individuals and organizations who have worked so hard for so long to advance this cause and make this ruling possible. This is a truly monumental day for these loving couples and for everyone who believes in basic freedom for our citizens and equal protection under the law.

  • ExArmyCT

Now that June 26th will be enshrined in history as one of the most important dates for the LGBT community, I went online and ordered a chrome “626” badge for the trunk of my car. Just Google “Mazda 626 badge” and go to any shopping site. there are various styles available. I just got mine for six bucks. Enjoy!

  • Steven Leahy

  • Gregory In Seattle

    Excellent summary.

  • ErikDC

Now we can move onto more important questions like… does Matt shave his facial hair to get that goatee shape or is that his natural pattern? ๐Ÿ˜›

    • JฬถaฬถlฬถaฬถpฬถeฬถรฑJoe Smithson

Looks to me that he some thin spots on the jaw, shaves the spots under the lower lip and shaves the cheeks to get the line. Looks like he shaves his neck too and keeps the beard along his jaw line.

      • ErikDC

I think it’s a good look for him.

    • LonelyLiberal

Matt does not shave. Magical fairies appear at night and sculpt his facial hair with their enchanted scissors.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Can’t answer you until I see him naked.

      • ErikDC

        Can I join? ๐Ÿ™‚

  • 2amor

I hope Matt does not just fade away now that we have Marriage equality. I really like him and wish him much success.

  • James

I just hope that the backlash doesn’t involve actual violence.

    • Schlukitz

As happy and elated as I am to finally see equality for all the law of the land, I do not for one second believe that the haters will go gently into the night.

I am certain that the haters are in deep shock from the favorable SCOTUS decision, even though some may have anticipated it happening. As soon as they catch their breath and figure out their next move, I have no doubt that we will be hearing a great deal more from these folks over the coming days, weeks and months given their past animus and tenacity.

Of course, nothing would please me more than to be proven wrong. Only time will tell.

      • Homo Erectus

The ones that stirred the pot for money will move on. It might take a while for the crazies they stirred up to settle down.

        • Schlukitz

That would be my fondest wish.

  • GreatLakeSailor
    • BlueberriesForMe

      Yay!

    • G

Love the sign. They had better be careful, as that is clearly the Mobile horse and that is trademarked and copy written.

      • GreatLakeSailor

I hadda look that up. It is not identical, but similar to Mobil Oil. I don’t know where the “too close” line is.

        • G

Well, unless your people there, assuming you know them, have billions to fight it, have some art kids draw one and change the face, etc and they are fine. To not have to fight the red part, have it a different shade of red and the color it is as an outline and they would win any charge against them

          • GreatLakeSailor

            assuming you know them
Never heard of them before today – my loss as they seem pretty cool.

          • G

Yes, they seem pretty cool. I was just trying to prevent an issue, as some companies, including them, and especially Disney protect their stuff.

      • clay

Are they housed in a mid-century Mobile station?

  • Ed Burrow

So, I just called the local Clerk of Court’s office in Jefferson Parish (504-364-2900). I asked the nice lady on the phone if they were issuing marriage licenses, and she said well, no, not yet, not till we have clarification. I said….oh, it’s for me and my girlfriend. She said oh, let me get you transferred. The next lady said they were closing for the day, but they would be opening at 8:30 am Monday morning and will be issuing them then. I asked, for all couples? She said no. I said I was mistaken, that after the Supreme Court decision I was under the impression that I was now a full citizen but I was obviously wrong and that I’ll just go to the back of the bus. She then hung up on me.
(what the fuck needs to be clarified??!?)

    • Paul

Did you try Orleans Parish? I’m sure they have to be issuing them.

      • gaymex

He shouldn’t have to try another Parish. Equality? Good luck Ed. It does suck.

        • Ed Burrow

Orleans parish (504-407-0000) was more polite than Jefferson parish, but they closed at 3:30. Regardless, they are dragging their feet. Bullshit.

          • Paul

If Piyush is really going to make Louisianan LGBTs wait 25 days to get married, they’d better start making noise…Ferguson style.

          • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

            Indiana style worked pretty well.

          • David Walker

Piyush wants to set himself up as the new George Wallace. I hope he understands that Wallace wouldn’t give him the time of day.

          • Homo Erectus

George Wallace will always be remembered as a bigoted asshole. Ten years from now everyone will think the same about Jindal.

          • gaymex

            Total Bullshit.
Edit: For what it’s worth, I will call and try the same tactic then bitch like hell if I get the same treatment. Fuck them. It’s the law of the land.

          • Bruno

Louisiana obviously has a tighter hierarchy than other states like Alabama. The good news about that is that when the politicians finally acquiesce, all the parishes will have to follow. The bad news is that the politicians are assholes who can’t see the writing on the wall.

    • billbear1961

That was very clever of you, Ed, to catch them in their filthy goddamned lie!

      Well done!!

      NOTHING needs to be “clarified”!!

      They WILL obey the LAW!!

I’ve called clerks in Utah and Alabama, and will gladly call Jefferson Parish to tell them what I think of them if they say they aren’t issuing licenses!

They WILL obey the SUPREME COURT OF THE USA!!

      • Paul

UTAH?! I thought Utah’s been issuing licenses since October?

        • billbear1961

I called WAY BACK at the beginning, Paul (when some of the counties were resisting).

In Utah, and later in Alabama (before the ALSC put a halt to things).

    • Schlukitz

If Jesus descended from the heavens and said to these dumb fucks, “What part of Equality For All do you not understand, they would nail him to the cross again!

  • Ginger Snap

Matt thank you for all you have done and guess what I’m crying with my friends over a glass of wine. We have love, we have love, we have love.

    • billbear1961

      Love–and JUSTICE!!

      ๐Ÿ™‚

      • G

And to think about it, all of those far over the top histrionics by The Histrionics Homosexualย (TM) at any minor setback, only could have fallen on the eyes of those unhinged. They did nothing but exhaust the readers for months and months and months and months and months. They did NOTHING to help the community or the win. I hope that is your learning curve on this wonderful day to help those around you.

      • G

By the way, how many people over the couple years here told you to calm the f*ck down? I would bet 80 to 120

        • billbear1961

By the way, just so you know–the moment I realize who it is, I stop reading your comments.

  • U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska:

    โ€œI support marriage equality, and
believe todayโ€™s ruling is the right one as it reinforces limited
government and promotes family values. The decision keeps governments
out of the most private and personal aspects of peoplesโ€™ lives, supports
adultsโ€™ decisions to make lifetime commitments to one another, and
    encourages more families to form.

    โ€œNothing in todayโ€™s ruling
changes my belief that marriage equality is fair and equal public
policy, and that it respects religious freedoms by remaining a civil
practice that stops at the church door.โ€

    • billbear1961

IF a given church wants it to stop there.

Truly Christian churches–as opposed to the fascist Christer shit houses–welcome us and will marry same-sex couples, Senator.

(Justice came through for us, Biki!!)

      Hi Bill,
Feeling better now? Hope you have been able to relax. :=)
      Cheers and best wishes.

      • billbear1961

We didn’t get heightened scrutiny, but I’ll worry about that tomorrow, Blue!

        ๐Ÿ™‚

        xx

        • Homo Erectus

Good morning, Bill. I thought about the heightened scrutiny a bit, and here’s what I came up with: We can get married now. Not “gay married”, just married like anyone else. SCOTUS didn’t put us in a special class, they made us equal. That’s what we wanted all along. ENDA is a battle for another day. Today my jaw is still sore from grinning so much yesterday.

      I was looking for my lover’s grave;
Nowhere could I find it though,
Every moment I had to grieve:
      “Where are you, my Souliko?”
I noticed a rose in thorns,
      Orphaned in the bush’s core;
I implored with my heart torn
      “Aren’t you my Souliko?”
      A nightingale was silently sitting
And hiding in the leaves alone
I sweetly whispered as if singing:
      “Aren’t you my Souliko?”
      The sweet singer softly rustled,
Her beak felt the smell of bloom
Like in sorrow the bird chanted
As if saying: “Yes, it’s true!”

        Haunting lyrics

        • RoFaWh

It’s Georgian (as the curlicue Georgian alphabet makes clear). Widely and wildly popular throughout the old USSR; it was Stalin’s favorite song. So popular that it’s often thought to be a folksong, but it’s not. Both the poet and the composer are known people.

I’m pleased that it has struck a chord with some of you.

The version above is sung in Russian. Here’s a version in Georgian in a much simpler setting:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hM3hW9x-hMI

For some other fine Georgian singing, look up Hamlet Gonashvili on YouTube.

  • BobSF_94117

Just gotta point out that Matt has to go to opposition to segregation to find the challenge we face today in getting our marriages actually recognized. Though there was a bit of foot-dragging after Loving, it was nothing like the opposition ahead of us.

    • bkmn

Lambda Legal is ready and standing by for any and all clerks that refuse to issue marriage licenses. They will find themselves involved in a lawsuit with a request for financial damages payable by the clerk. That might motivate a few people to just do their job.

  • Paul

I’m surprised Obama hasn’t signed a proclamation making June 26 National Equality Day. He’s signed proclamations before making June gay pride month.

    • Alex in Idaho

A bit premature–we’re not there yet (ENDA).

      • Paul

Well, ENDA could happen on September 21st for all we know. But June 26th has been the day for monumental rulings.

It’s too bad Stonewall couldn’t have happened a couple days earlier too. ๐Ÿ˜›

  • KnownDonorDad

South Dakota’s AG is on NPR saying that while he wanted to “let the people vote,” he is treating the SCOTUS decision as “effective immediately.”

    • billbear1961

He wanted to let the people vote?

      On HIS rights?

Oh, no, THAT would be WRONG.

  • KnownDonorDad

I have to deliver this to Karen L. Grube. If anyone sees her in a comment thread, would you kindly let me know? Been saving this baby for a year.

  • KnownDonorDad

I’m building up my sadz list. I would recommend that Joe include the latest from Ted Cruz with his “darkest 24 hours” quote. And of course,

    Roy Moore:
    http://www.rawstory.com/2015/06/alabama-justice-roy-moore-vows-to-block-illegitimate-marriage-equality-ruling-at-state-level/comments/

    Pat Robertson:

    http://twitter.com/CBNNews/status/614502602416463872

Still can’t find anything from Phyllis Schlafly, Frank Schubert, Lou Engle, and the remnants of the Westboro Baptist Church. I’m sure there are more, feel free to add. Also, NOM’s Facebook page is a sadz-a-palooza.

    • Fucking Babdist Pat Fucking Robertson is calling marriage a fucking sacrament???? Since when did he roll over to the Vatican???

      • clay

THANK you, but he probably thinks funerals are sacramental, as well.

  • BobSF_94117

I can’t bring myself to read today’s decision.

I’m guessing the word “animus” doesn’t even appear.

[I decided I’d check and see. Sure enough, the word doesn’t appear.

    sigh]

  • Edmund Allin

Does this mean that Jack Baker’s and Michael McConnell’s marriage is now 100% official?

  • Queequeg

Great video. I like Matt’s emphasis on the fact that everyone won.
