All Eyes On SCOTUS (Again)

Here we go again, kids. SCOTUSblog will begin live-blogging today’s opinions beginning at 9AM. This could be the greatest pride weekend in history. Or not.

  • Ed Burrow

    I’m clutching my pearls…

    • LovesIrony

      I’m clutching my husband’s jewels.

      • Ed Burrow

  • LovesIrony

It’s a nice day for a gay wedding

    • John30013
      • Gene

yours is a sick and twisted mind (with good taste)….
        come sit next to me
        πŸ˜‰

    • Gustav2

In some cultures rain on a wedding day is lucky, it is raining steady in many parts of Ohio today. Columbus is expecting +1 inch of rain today. It may damper the number of weddings today.

      • It rained NON-STOP on Columbus’ gay pride parade, but the crowd was strong anyway.

      • zhera

Gotta have some rain if we want rainbows! πŸ˜€

        • Gustav2

The sun just peeked out…nope, not yet!

    • Homo Erectus

Billy Idol used to be so hot….

  • Sam_Handwich

marriage, executions, redistricting, EPA & shotguns.

    what’s your pleasure?

    • DaddyRay

      I’ll take marriage please

      • Sam_Handwich

do you want hash browns or argle-bargle with that?

        • DaddyRay

Toast would be good and hold the skim milk please

        • StSean

also, bryan brown would like a tall, cold glass of shut the fuck up with a chaser of sadz. please.

  • Damn right, Mr. Obergefell. You are, indeed, Number One!

  • MarkOH

I have a really good feeling about today.

    • Sam_Handwich

      me2

      • Mark

        me3

        • DaddyRay

          4me

    • Why am I so goddamned nervous?

      • MarkOH

Because, there is always the possibility the SCOTUS could do another Dred Scott decision. But, I 99% believe that they will support the Ohio case. States have recognized marriages from other states that they do not allow in their state. Same sex marriage is no different. Once that is done, the flood gates are open. Even if they don’t go so far as overturning all the bans, marriage for same sex couples will be legal.

        • I moved from Nevada (which just got recognition recently) to Ohio (my home state) recently. So, if this goes our way, it will be kind of sweet that Ohio is the deciding case. Plus, a day before my 7th anniversary to The Other Half. But I’ve got a case of ravenous butterflies.

          • MarkOH

CONGRATS! Both on the move and the anniversary! I think we all have the butterflies but am still feeling good about the day.

          • Paul

Plus, Ohio was the deciding state in the 2004 election, which was based on “values” as much as it was Iraq and terrorism. Now THAT would be sweet irony.

      • Mark

Cuz, finally, maybe finally, we’ll finally just be the same.

    • vorpal

I just wish that a time zone would be given with this 9:00 AM. Is it eastern time? I have no idea.

      • Adam Schmidt

Live-blogging begins at 9am Eastern and the decisions will start being released at 10am Eastern.

        • vorpal

          Thank you :-).
          =great anticipation=

      • Gene

The chinese make their whole country work on 1 (1!) time zone. its inconvenient for the western provinces but, the uniformity is wonderful! Sometimes I think we should do that here (Eastern time zone, OF COURSE! πŸ™‚ lol

        • vorpal

One thing I loved about being in Hawaii was being so far behind the other states in time zones. Game of Thrones out on torrent sites at 6:00 PM or so, baby!

Chile is the most confusing time zone nonsense ever. You’d think it would be the EASIEST, since it is a tiny thin strip of a country, but whether or not we do daylight savings and when is so random that I’m sure that it somehow involves the precise art of throwing a dart at a board. For example, this year, we have had to all set our computers and devices to Buenos Aires time because Chilean time decided to NOT to daylight savings.(I think that’s right, but I’m so confused I have no idea any more.)

          • Gene

its Eastern Time zone, isnt it? I know colombia and (ick) Bolivia are…I would think….
Hawaii and Chile…how many telescopes have you worked with?! lol
(( at least most of them seem to be in nice places!))

          • vorpal

Keep in mind that it’s not as clear cut as all that. Chilean would technically be largely in the same time zone as eastern, but is CLT (Chile Standard Time). Our daylight savings are at the opposite time of year as you North Americans, which complicates things.

My organization owns telescopes in both Hawaii and Chile, so it’s the same org, just different locations :-).

We are hoping to go back to Hawaii in 12-24 months. Chile is nice, but man, I want my familiar first world comforts back. So many little annoyances in living here, especially with regards to availability of products like medications.

All of us foreigners are always having to order stuff from the US and then wait 8+ weeks for it to arrive here. Argh!

          • Gene

It is OECD 1st world classed now, but,I have heard that from other people who spent time there. and, I do love Hawaii.
though, the sense of being AWAY from everything can weigh after time, so I am told. in any case…Chile, or Hawaii…boo fuckin hoo…. πŸ˜‰

          • vorpal

Hahaha! Let me tell you that the year we lived on the Big Island of Hawaii was by far THE best fucking year of our lives. It really is the most magical place on earth, IMO :-).

          • vorpal

Oh, and Chile: it is frustrating because of the medication issue. For example, most of us are used to being able to walk into a pharmacy, look for what we want, grab it, and go to the cash (unless it is prescription, obviously). Here, in pharmacies, all vitamins and medications – prescription or otherwise (and most are NOT prescription) – are behind the counter, so you need to know what you are asking for.

I am extremely interested in pharmacology, so I do know a lot about medications and generally know precisely what I want for – say – sleep issues, cold, nausea, what have you, but they have so many fewer options than the US. For example, you can’t get diphenhydramine (Benadryl) here, which is amazing for sleep for me and works well for my eucalyptus allergy. Everyone here has a bunch of huge bottles they’ve ordered / brought back from the US with them. After several weeks of shitty sleeping, we finally got 2400 pills of it shipped to us, so we will never go tired or allergenic again!

So often, though, when I go to a pharmacy and try to explain to the pharmacist in my hideous Spanish what I want – only to be told yet again that it isn’t sold in Chile – and then to be offered alternatives I have never heard of, I go home to find out that it is homeopathic bullshit, which is common here.

I will refrain from getting started on my homeopathy rant because otherwise I could be here for hours.

        • William

I like Central Time. The eleven o’clock news is on at ten.

          • Gene

We briefly…between Atlanta and New York and Hong Kong…lived in beautiful, exotic….Terra Haute.
            1) no…we did not get he bends
            2) its nice enough actually…nice countryside..pleasant people…..yes, the prison was creepy, and there was that ODOR…but…
            3) walk 400 feet, cross into Central time, and we got tv from both sides…it WAS convenient watching the 11 news at MIDNIGHT, for, I often have insomnia πŸ™‚

    • Rocco Gibraltar

I hope you are right, Mark. Since Jim is from Cincinnati, and our gay pride parade is tomorrow, it would be sweet to have him home to celebrate it victoriously. And I will relish every crazy word of angry dissent from Scalia, Alito, and the one who does not speak.

    • In my bones, I feel it will be today. But my bones have been wrong before, so I am not taking any bets . . .

  • Blake Jordan

Come on SCOTUS, stopping f-ing with this sweetheart!!!

  • DaddyRay

So if the ruling comes in at 10:00 how soon before I can force Ben Cohen to gay marry me?

    • Mark

Not till I’m done with him……

      • DaddyRay

        Maybe we could share

        • Mark

          DEAL!

  • ArchiLaw

    I love me some Obergefell.

  • Happy Dance

    Tminus24andcounting…..

  • Ninja0980

So nervous even though I’m sure we’re going to win.

  • Sam_Handwich

Don’t go to scotusblog yet, Amy and Lyle aren’t dressed.

  • SCOTUSblog – check. Joe.My.God – check. Hopes for a favorable decision – check. Okay, I think I’m ready.

    • Ed Burrow

ugh, i know right? and in the middle of all this, i gotta sell some cars too..

      • zhera

Better sell them before the ruling is out then. Or you’ll give the cars away for free. πŸ˜€

      • Todd20036

I don’t have a license, but if you wish to show me the back seat, I’d be interested….

    • Have to teach this morning so I’m packing up the computer to take with me. See y’all after I’ve slogged my way to Addison.

    • Homo Erectus

      Deep breath.

    • BlueberriesForMe

Optional: if you have any sequins, get those babies out.
Also, practice being Relentlessly Gay, if you aren’t already.

      • StSean

oooh. did you see that “relentlessly gay” was a hoax? πŸ™

        • BlueberriesForMe

Sigh. Really? I still love the phrase anyway.

          • Gene

            that NEVER felt right….
            sad to hear it though.

    • William

      Put the kettle on.

  • Sam_Handwich

here’s what Adam Liptak says at NY Times this morning:

There are five decisions left before the justices can leave for their summer break. There are two days left on the official schedule: Friday and Monday.

The oldest case, on nonpartisan redistricting, was argued in February and may be ready on Friday. So may the second-oldest case, on the regulation of mercury and other toxins.

That leaves three cases argued in April: a minor one on a gun law and major ones on lethal injections and same-sex marriage. Those may come on Monday. Or not.

    • canoebum

If it’s not today, it’s going to be a long weekend.

  • JT

Decisions in two of the other three major gay rights cases for Justice Kennedy were handed down on June 26, so this might well be the day for this one.

  • Dennis

Will there be a rally at the historic Stonewall Inn when the decision is announced?

  • gaylib

We are currently on the NJ turnpike en route to NYC Pride. Want to hear good news soo bad!

    • Gene

      be safe! have fun! πŸ™‚

  • zhera

So Joe, did you get to give out the JMG T-shirts last night? Did anyone manage to pronounce Obergefell correctly?
Hope you had a splendid time at the JMG meet.

  • Mark

This is so huge…that I am going to run up my time on this fucking Verizon metered service air-card thingy. It’s just too much to miss.

    • Todd20036

Um, you’re talking about the SCOTUS ruling… Right?

      • Mark

yep. but it’s still huge πŸ™‚

  • sherman

I almost would rather it not be announced until Monday. The President is in Charleston to deliver the eulogy for Rev Pinckney. Hard for this to be a day for celebration too.

    • I don’t think SCOTUS usually takes that sort of thing into consideration though.

      • billbear1961

That’s what someone on MSNBC said last night: they move when they’re ready–period.

      • sherman

No they don’t, I didn’t say they did.

I guess I’m alone here, but this day has a pall over it because of the hate crime in Charleston. Had the victims there been gay, I wonder if people would still be celebrating the court victory as robustly.

  • Homo Erectus

Please let it be today. I can’t go to work without knowing.

    • Dahlia Lithwick from Slate didn’t opine or make a prediction, but she did mention that today is also the anniversary of both Lawrence and Windsor – so it may be possible that today might be intentionally chosen to honor those particular decisional anniversaries.

  • medaka

  • Paul

Let’s hope today is the last day I wake up in a marriage equality-less country.

    • Mark

Let’s hope today is the first day we are all equal under the law!

      • Paul

Well, it would not a full 24-hour day, which is why I said what I said above. πŸ˜›

        • Mark

      2) I dont like to try to remember how to spell it either.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

    Relentlessly waiting!

  • Gene

I grow to more and more admire this mans class, dignity, style…and his determination. His husband died to soon.
    .
but, he died a luckier man than most who live longer, but don’t have a man like this at their side.

  • @MikeinLAS

My husband and I (legally married in Nevada) plan to attend San Francisco Pride on Sunday hoping that it is going to be the BIGGEST GAYEST PRIDE EVER! Or the biggest protest ever (should a #SSM ruling today be unfavorable). We’re hoping for the former and have several bottles of bubble being delivered to our hotel room to celebrate.

  • bryan

  • vorpal

I AM DYING HERE waiting for the minutes to tick by.
    AGONY.
No, not feeling dramatic at all this morning…

We may be waiting till Monday, kitty!

          • vorpal

Let us hope not. We have waited long enough and I, for one, want to have a weekend full of celebration!

          • billbear1961

            Same here, chΓ©ri!

    • Gene

darling, we are waiting for a decision that will change the lives of millions, and put an imprint of approval on what fundys have to declare abbomination to maintain their corp identity.
you are not being a drama queen.
you are a queen experiencing real honest fucking drama!

      • vorpal

Four more minutes until decisions will start to be announced. Eeep!

I am hoping that this will be decided in our favour and it will encourage other countries who have been more hesitant and dragging their feet (Australia, I’m looking at YOU) to move forward similarly for the sake, safety, and mental and emotional health of my LGBT siblings all across the world.

        • Gene

          1) you have a hell of a view from that mountain…are you sure thats not NZ? the flags are similar, and is closer, but they already have equality!
          2) I think you’re right..but…BUT…todd starnes sized BUTT (ick) I still think…”monday”

          Thank you!

          I wish I were stronger!

          • Nexus1

You are strong in many ways bill. We all have times and events when we need the strength of others and this is that moment for many. Just a few more minutes before we know if today is the day for nationwide equality.

    • billbear1961

I swear I can feel every hair and whisker turning white, and I don’t mean because I’m a polar bear!

  • Sam_Handwich

    FOUR BOXES today

    • Adam Schmidt

Holy shit… And here I’m losing my mind waiting.

    • Paul

Oh, man, they’d better not be mean assholes and make us go through all of them only to discover we have to wait until Monday for marriage.

      • Giant Monster Gamera

I really hope they don’t do that. I have today off and am prepared

  • JT

I asked a question on Scotusblog half an hour ago but they didn’t show it–about whether Scalia reads his dissents in gay rights cases from the bench. Maybe they just have a backlog.
