Billy Graham’s Grandson Resigns From Megachurch After Admitting Affair

Via the Washington Post:

Billy Graham’s grandson Tullian Tchividjian has resigned from his pulpit at Coral Ridge Presbyterian, a high-profile church in south Florida, after admitting he had an affair. Tchividjian, 42, has been married to his wife, Kim, since 1994 and they have three children. Many have considered Tchividjian (pronounced cha-vi-jin) a rising star in evangelicalism, especially in Reformed circles. He is the fourth Florida megachurch pastor to resign after having affairs, including the son of megachurch pastor Joel Hunter.

In 2009, Tchividjian succeeded the late James Kennedy as senior pastor of Coral Ridge. Kennedy was one of the architects of the Religious Right, a movement of evangelicals who became intertwined in more conservative politics. However, Tchividjian decided to preach less about politics, unlike his uncle Franklin Graham, founder of Samaritan’s Purse. Billy Graham, 96, was one of the most influential religious leaders of the 20th century and an adviser to many U.S. presidents. Tchividjian’s mother is Billy Graham’s oldest child.

The church has issued a statement:

Several days ago, Pastor Tullian admitted to moral failure, acknowledging his actions disqualify him from continuing to serve as senior pastor or preach from the pulpit, and resigned – effective immediately. We are saddened by this news, but are working with and assisting Pastor Tullian and his family to help them through this difficult time, and asking people to join us in praying that God will bring restoration through this process and healing to all involved.

Franklin Graham is Tchividjian’s uncle.

Color me shocked. Shocked I tell you! This wouldn’t have happened if only they had prayed harder.

You got it in the hot dept…hmmmm wonder how long fore he comes out?

        • William

In a couple weeks he’ll be at a retreat, beating a pillow with a tennis racket.

          • Mark

            Nude.

      • Larry Ft Pierce

I’m sure I could teach him a trick or two.

      • Mcflyer54

Actually I’d prefer he not come out. I’m sick of these clowns who blame their disgusting behavior on their closeted homosexuality. Just let him be a plain old horndog womanizer who can’t keep it in his pants – I’m perfectly satisfied with his just being straight slime.

        • nocadrummer

… and let his KIDS be the gay ones!

          • Mcflyer54

While that would seem poetic justice I’m always hesitate to wish gay children on bigoted homophobic parents. One cannot chose their parents and to end up with one who might not be accepting is a lot to put on a child. But I certainly get your point.

    • David Walker

It’s OK. I’m sure he’s been forgiven, in the duggar sense.

      • clay

Well, except it appears the woman is actually old enough to give forgiveness/consent this time.

Hard prayer is probably what got him in trouble to begin with.

    • Hal Watts

If they could “pray the gay away,” surely they could do the same thing with adultery…..

    • nocadrummer

That sounds vaguely like the NRA – “If everyone would have had a prayer, none of this would have happened.”

      • Prixator

I only pray for Toronto sports teams – which means my prayers go unanswered.

  • Mark

Isn’t it interesting that those with the most pious and self-righteous attitudes are the ones who……repressed much are they??

  • Mister Don

But the affair was with a woman? so it’s really OK. Nod, nod, wink, wink

    • I’ve read Joe’s post three times and the Washington Post article twice and find no mention of him having an affair with a woman — just “a friend.”

      • clay

so he does bother to specify the other was not a member of the congregation?

        • Re-read the WaPo article again and didn’t find any mention of that either.

      • Mister Don

Question mark inserted properly. if it turns out to be a man, well, ROFLAO

      • McSwagg

The Fort Lauderdale SunSentinal reports that his wife was having an affair and his affair was a result of hers. While it doesn’t say it was a heterosexual affair, the tit-for-tat nature seems to imply that it was.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Y’know, I have no problem with how other people live their lives. That this man had an affair means nothing to me personally. What upsets me about this shit is that while they are busy preaching to others about how to live their lives and telling others how immoral the LGBT community is, they are living immoral lives. At least according to their own rules. I have no use or respect for hypocrites and liars.

    • Steven Leahy

I regularly have to explain that to my xtian “friend” when he goes off about judgmental liberals – it’s not about making a mistake, it’s about the hypocrisy.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

They don’t get the difference, do they? As far as I’m concerned, this guy could screw ten people a day and I wouldn’t care as long as they were of age and consented to the activity. It’s truly none of my business and it doesn’t affect my life in any way. But, when they don’t hold themselves to the same moral standards as they insist other do, then it becomes my business, And, when they speak out against others, make laws, and discriminate all in an effort to get money and incite others to hatred, his personal business is then open for all of us to comment upon.

        • JW Swift

Exactly. If they’d leave us alone to live our lives the way we want, we wouldn’t be giving two shits about the way they live theirs.

    • RoFaWh

The phrase you are looking for is “they are busybodies who don’t stick to minding their own business.”

      • Wynter Marie Starr

        I call them Nosy McNosies.

    • John T

Maybe if I understood more about philosophy and ethics I could figure out what it is about the Christian mindset that blinds them to hypocrisies that the rest of us can smell from a mile away. Christians don’t get hypocrisy. Christians don’t see it as a problem. Christians believe that it is much more important to say the right things than it is to do the right things — as long as you don’t get caught doing the wrong thing, but if you do, you’re 4given because Jesus.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

I have several degrees, John. Two of them are in anthropology, which deals with culture of all kinds and touches upon ethics of different groups within their culture. For me, it’s about privilege, which is a social construct as are most things in culture. Privilege, of course deals with power; who has it and who doesn’t, as well as who wants it.

The lessons of history tell us that those with privilege never relinquish it willingly, not are they willing to share it. Their culture tells them that they are superior to certain groups and if you aren’t a part of their club, you are automatically deemed inferior. We see this throughout culture; in schools, in sports teams, even in stuff like the coke/pepsi battle. Of course, some of these things are meaningless and even fun to a certain degree.

You’re right, they don’t see their hypocrisy, and if they did they would have a justification for it. Pointing out the obvious to them is useless. (Like the fact that they used the bible to justify slavery, but no longer do so because culture has moved on.) I’m not speaking of all christian groups as there are many that do good work and don’t care at all if people are gay, they are welcoming and affirming.

It there is one true statement about history and or culture it is this; 99 out of 100 times, it’s about money and power.

      • Trog

Great question. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around that too. I think part of it has to do with the fact that we gays openly embrace and flaunt something they consider a sin, while those Christians who have affairs are in fact ashamed and ask for forgiveness–which of course is automatically given.

Also in play, I think, is the foundational idea in Christianity that all humans are deprived human beings incapable of love and compassion unless we invite the supernatural Jesus to be our savior. If your starting point is that people are awful then it’s not totally hypocritical to do an awful thing. But if you’re a Christian, then your awful action is not as bad as everyone else’s awful action because, I guess, Jesus.

Plus: see Wynter Marie Starr’s response.

    • HadenoughBS

That’s one hypocritical Graham family member exposed. Next glass house occupant!

  • clay

    Hey, Cuberly,

I’m still needing to work through the Hartford Institute’s data base on mega-churches. It’s going to require a bit more time and motivation on my part. They claim in each of the three reports in the last 10 years that the number of mega-churches has increased, but the fine print says they’ve also revised down the number of attendees needed to fulfill the definition. I haven’t dug out, yet, how much of the “growth” is due to widening their definition.

    • RoFaWh

A good way to present those statistics would be a bar graph, horizontal axis being buckets based on congregation size, counting only adults, with the bars for the three reports alongside each other; the vertical axis the total number of adults in congregations of that size.

If you use a logarithmic scale for the horizontal axis, you might be able to fit everything from the tiniest hillbilly church to the largest megachurch on one graph.

At the very least, I’d try that as my first kick at the cat. It might turn out to be crap, as first attempts often are.

/used to do that kind of stuff for work
//am a devotee of Edward Tufte’s “The Graphical Display of Quantitative Information”. (Titlle may be garbled.)

It’d be nice if I could get their data, rather than try to disaggregate it from their public reports.

  • Blake Mason

So much for the sanctity of marriage. What happened?… “the gay” was responsible for him fucking another woman? Christians never bring up the subject of personal responsibility when it comes to upholding the sanctity of their own marriages.

  • Upon seeing his picture I thought, “An affair? With a woman??” And then I read the article and the question remains. His own description of the affair reads as closeted-gay as it gets.

    • Wynter Marie Starr

I just went and read the article, and I have to agree with you. There is no way the friend that was helping him through this was female. That doesn’t even make sense. If he is such a good little christian, that person would be another man; women are not there to provide counseling, they are there for childbearing and for screwing if one is straight.

  • Ninja0980

I wonder how many times he talked about how LGBT people are ruining marriage?
My guess is quite a bit.

    • Gene

oh…it was a FAVORITE topic. The (NOT MAINLINE) PCA (Presbyterian church in america..the nutty little one) denomination and congregation in particular he preached at is a FLAGSHIP in the anti gay rights movement. Kennedy ran that place into ever more extreme places, and freaks like Janet Porter worked there/got their start there. His Church (congregation) was/is a training center for anti gay teachers, propaganda, think tanks, publications, you name it. It is HARD to express how hard core…..and successfully influencial, until just recently, it was.

      .
the fact he was seen by many as the Heir of BOTH Kennedy AND Grahm, is very photogenic, and a talented speaker, made him just that, the Heir appearant. his asshat uncle Franklin has been successful, but, it to strident in his opposition. This guy is just as bad, maybe worse, but has the sens to not use over the top language. He was a DANGER to us, and this, while it wont end him, DOES end his position as the future leader of the opposition (religious) against us among the conservative Reformed.
      This is a GREAT day.

    • JW Swift

As the quoted article from JMG’s post indicated, until the death of D. James Kennedy, the former senior pastor of this church before this guy took over, it had been at the forefront of the anti-LGBT fight. Gays were a favorite topic of their sermons which were televised widely and the church did TONS of stuff behind the scenes, hosting “Reclaiming America for Christ” meetings, ran an organization called the Center for Reclaiming America for Christ which sponsored prayer breakfasts in D.C. for lawmakers, they had a full-time lobbyist in Washington, etc. This was an organization that was hell-bent (pardon the pun) on keeping us in our closets.

Since Kennedy’s death, the church has not been as active in anti-LGBT politics, but I’m sure they haven’t done a 180-degree switch, either.

  • Blake Mason

And this is why I will never believe a goddamn (no pun intended) thing these holier-than-thou mutha fuckers have to say. They preach self-righteousness, but you know they are doing shit to the contrary of their teachings.

As always, the wife is to blame for not tending to her husband’s needs, whatever they may be.
Women are always at the root of evil in most religions,
which is another reason why young women are leaving religion in droves.

      • Steven Leahy

        True.

LOL I guess it could have been worse, he could have said “my wife and I are heartbroken over her actions”

        • Mcflyer54

He is utterly loathsome…and, from what I am told, enjoys the attention of the church ladies (he is attractive..no two ways around it). His fall is yet another well deserved disaster in the decline of an evangelical “dynasty” of intelligent, but heartless, pastors who took reformed theology, which usually leads to tolerance, as with the Presbyterians (which he has denounced) to GLBT acceptance, in directions of fanatical bigotry.
Good riddance to this bigoted, vain fool who has so often gone out of his way to denounce us just for being alive.

      • Gene

(note; the largest and most influencial of the Presbyterian denominations is the GLBT affirming one, This asshat worked for the smaller opposition Presbyterian Church in America, which is anti gay, anti women, anti…just fill in the blank. the two groups do not even acknowledge the existence of each other)

Funny thing about Coral Ridge Prez is their organist, when James Kennedy was still there, Diane Bish, did quite a lot of positive PR for the place. She’s a lesbian and i think i read she finally married her long time partner a few years ago.

    • When she finger synched an organ concert for the American Guild of Organists the PR was less than positive. I think that kind of thing falls under lying of some kind.

      • Sam_Handwich

did she really?? where and when?

        • If I remember correctly it was the AGO convention here in Dallas in the mid-/late 1980s (while I was in grad school and kept up with that sort of thing).

If it is a real church that believes all the healing through prayer why must the leader pretend to be without sin. The price of humanity is the belief that everyone sins and comes short of the glory of god (or so they teach). It seems to me that he admit his sin, repents and the church as a whole learns and heals, but we all know what they preach is not what they do. Examples like this just reinforce it is nothing but a big dollar dog and pony show.

    D. James Kennedy was one of those obits I read happily. I attended protests at Coral Ridge Presbyterian. Kennedy’s daughter led a group of hardliners who left the church after her father’s death.
Kennedy was out of commission long before his death, but they showed reruns of his sermons to preserve their revenue stream. At one time it was estimated their annual haul was around $33M.
Another example of a congregation worshiping the minister rather than the gospel.

    • RichBstlouis

I think she was even excommunicated by the church when she tried to have the new pastor ousted. While the church still has to own its legacy, Coral Ridge Ministries is filled with her hardliners and has not had ties with the church for a number of years.

  • dk6

““Kicked out of his family’s home as a teenager, Tchividjian indulged in almost everything Miami’s sensual nightlife offered,”” I lived in South Beach around this time, when it was Gay Utopia, and he looks very familiar…

    • Stev84

That’s just part of their typical conversion porn stories. The farther someone goes down, the more admired they are. So they frequently exaggerate.

      • John T

Born-agains love to humblebrag about their wild and crazy pre-conversion stories. Talking about hitting bottom with a nostalgic gleam in their eye. Those were the days… ahem but now I’m on the straight and narrow because Jesus.

    • People4Humanity

      pictures!

    • TrollopeReader

and Frankie Franklin was quite a wild teen, too ….from the stories in last weeks posts … (and his mother locked him in the car trunk once when then went for burgers ….)

      • dk6

        & ur point?

        • TrollopeReader

umm….that they didn’t teach their kids well …in multi-generations? Holding up Billy Graham Christian values ( not) ? While grifting from the sheeple?

          • dk6

oh I thought Frankie Frank was a joke, didn’t know it was a real person…

          • TrollopeReader

well, he is a (scary) joke ….

            🙂

  • Stev84

This stuff is as certain as the sun going down and coming up again. Eventually they will be exposed for the hypocrites they all are.

  • bambinoitaliano

Bloody same sex marriage is to blame for the straying. Just talking about two men going at it makes these straights horny for pussies outside of their marriages.

  • Great. So the super-evangelists don’t just beget sequel sons with their own megachurch, but grandsons too at the same time? If that ain’t greedy. [Edited to say, sheesh, with a name like that, good thing he’s a hottie. Otherwise the foreignness would probably have kept him out of contention as Billy Graham Part III.]

  • People4Humanity

His HOTness doesn’t believe in proper dressing, such as
    T-shirts, I see.

    • KarenAtFOH

Well, it is hot and humid in S FL after all.

      • People4Humanity

The wicking action of 100% cotton t-shirts provide cooling.
        Allegedly.

        • Tor

Ha. You said wicking action. My dirty mind took it and ran with it.

      This question was asked:

  • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

He’s pinning it on his wife! “Eve” strikes again! In his statement to the Washington Post, he begins with, “As many of you know, I returned from a trip a few months back and discovered that my wife was having an affair.” He says his own affair was a result of that, and the separation that ensued.

    • skeptical_inquirer

If it’s a lie to save face, I’d so totally ditch the husband if I were the wife. Also, even if it was true, I’d be pretty mad he waved around dirty laundry to save his own neck.

      • Justin

If she’s smart, she’ll not say anything in public beyond her existing remarks and let her lawyer, er, crucify this guy. Depending on the divorce laws there, she could really nail him.

      • Schlukitz

Rats on a sinking ship will do whatever it takes to survive.

    • BudClark

Butbutbut … the Blessed Virgin Mary was supposed to have FIXED that:

      “At the angel’s ‘Ave’,
      Eva’s name reversing …”

(from the Marian Office Hymn “Ave maris stella”)

    • Schlukitz

He’s simply practicing the old adage of “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

  • RoFaWh

    That’s an Armenian surname.

He’s the product of race mixing! The very shame of it, that his mother would allow sacred white genes to be polluted by the genes of a swarthy, dark-haired bunch of mountain people from gawd only knows where!

    /sarcasm
    //I know where Armenia is
///I know about the Turkish genocide of Armenians
////I also know that Armenia was one of the first countries to adopt xtianity as its official religion.

    • William

I’ve been telling my sweetie that we need an Armenian houseboy. Tullian is in need of employment….

  • Adam Schmidt

It’s all liberals fault. If only some hussy hadn’t lured him away from his wife into sin he’d still be right with God.

And now I have to go wash my brain out with soap for thinking like that.

    • sherman

Look at a little of the video posted by Rev Floppy Hands above. With those jazz hands, it might not have been a hussy.

      • Tor

That would be a Hussar, right?

        • sherman

I had to look that up:

a member of any of various European military units originally modeled on the Hungarian light cavalry of the 15th century

I think Tullian would look good in this uniform-

          • William

            Too many buttons.

    • Ben in Oakland

Here is a bar of Ivory. It’s 99 and 44/100% pure.

      Unlike Tchvidjian.

  • BudClark

I still wanna see Frankie Graham’s Grindr pics … bet they’re out there!

Adultery is small potatoes for the Reich.

  • MDB

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!!!”

    • gewaite

This is almost as interesting as V. Gene Robinson’s divorce. Or Paul Moore’s “companion”.

  • JJS_prime

The usual story — gay marriage bad, straight adultery OK until you are caught.

    • Fyva Prold

Might not have been “straight adultery”

    • Stev84

Even then it’s ok if you “repent”

  • Mark

Not bad looking….and why do I think he got busted with some ‘man’ in his hair?

    • William

      Is that hair gel?

      • JCF

In the “Something About Mary (!)” sense…

        • William

          (snicker)

  • Mcflyer54

The article doesn’t seem real clear as to Tchividjian’s linage. He is the son of Billy Graham’s oldest daughter Virginia. And one would have to assume that simply being born into the Graham dynasty (Franklin Graham’s ministry alone is valued at over $125,000,000) automatically gives Tullian the inherent right to dine at the family trough.

But I haven’t a clue why he resigned. After all, he certainly knows that God has “forgiven” him – isn’t that how it works with these folks? Do just exactly what you preach against, get caught and then weep while asking your lord for forgiveness? Perfect example of a holier-than-thou arrogant “man of god”. But his wife cheated also (according to articles she was first) so apparently they are equal opportunity “family values” Christians.

    • Schlukitz

      Damage control.

He probably resigned because there is more than just the tip of the iceberg

  • Was it a mega-affair?

(Sorry — that just popped into my head when I read the headline.)

  • Rev. Floppy Hands

Oh, my…., he does give a vibe. He is quite expressive and demonstrative. In fact, he puts the ‘demon’ in demonstrative. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDhKOrHHYIQ

    • sherman

Oh my yes. Dub it with a different script and he could be praising Judy Garland and Kylie Minogue.

      • Octavio

        Jazz hands for Jeebuz?

    • Chuck in NYC

The bracelet on the right wrist…puh-leeeeeze, Mary.

      • JCF

        Mary, Stawp!

  • Trans Formation

Here’s the kicker for the Florida evangelicals, the ‘relationship’ is (rumored to be) transracial.

  • grada3784

Doesn’t the clobber verse from 1 Corinthians also include adulterers?
    Welcome to hell, Tullian.

  • Mike

It figures that all of the commenters immediately go into gloat mode. This is actually a bad development for us. Tchividjian wrested control of Coral Ridge from the followers of D James Kennedy. He turned it from a major anti-gay force back into a church. I can’t think of a single anti-gay sermon or message coming out of there since he took over. Kennedy’s daughter and a bunch of his followers left and they kept control over a media ministry. With this latest development, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was an effort by Kennedy’s daughter to retake Coral Ridge.

    • Schlukitz

Would you deny us that right after the centuries of vile hatred and damage that churches like these have wrested on the LGBT community?

You are entitled to forgive (and forget) if you like, but not all of us are willing to buy into that monotonous sing-song. Evil people should be held accountable for the harm that they do.

  • Greg B.

I wouldn’t mind being a participant in his moral failure.

    • Arkansan

As long as he kept his mouth full so he couldn’t talk.

  • KQCA

And, of course, one of the Christian village idiots will blame this on us.

    • nocadrummer

We still don’t know if it was a woman or man that he had an affair with. And his soon-to-be ex-wife wants to keep it private. Hmmm….

    • That might be the sticking point here. ‘We’ might actually be behind it, literally. I get the feeling he’s really into water based moisturizers.

  • Schlukitz

One after the other, these bible-thumping hypocrites who rant on and on about natural laws. the laws of god, saving tratitional marriage, saving the children, saving the country from peerversion, yada, yada, yada, get caught with their dick in the wrong hole and in some cases, a dick up their own hole.

    • William

It could turn out to be a simple ‘Slip and Fall’ case. As in that dick accidentally ended up down his throat.

      • Schlukitz

After watching just a couple of minutes of that video (I couldn’t take any more) can we just say FFID (Flaming faggot in denial)?

  • RKitty01

    I’d hit it 😉

    • From the looks of things, you might have more than a chance.

  • JustSayin

As a history reminder the chairman of AOL Steve case publicly donated 8.3 million dollars to coral ridge school. They knew it went to anti-gay issues and education practices and defended coral ridge as doing gods work.

  • MikeBx2

Ok, let me guess. 1.He did what he wanted to do until he was caught. 2.He says he’s sorry and says he’s asked Jesus to forgive him. 3.He’s now allowed to go back to judging others. Respect the process. /snark

    • William

      Same schtick, different channel.

  • Octavio

Well, all that hell, fire and brimstone talk works up a mean sexual hunger in a man. Of course he had an affair (or maybe more than one or two). He’s a healthy white heterosexual male. Isn’t it his fundamental(ist) right to troll for poon on the side? (snark)

    • William

Hetero? You may want to have your Gaydar checked.

      • Octavio

Didn’t bother to read the whole chabooga. Do you mean Graham the youngest was gettin’ hisself some man sex?

        • William

          Not officially… yet.

    • Schlukitz

Around these here parts, we calls it poontang. ;-P

  • 2karmanot

After seeing the above, I would like to see the shirtless, loin cloth sermon on the mount.

    • Homo Erectus

Only if done by Jeffrey Hunter.

  • jakeinlove

Deleted…Would you like to empty Recycle Bin. Yes.

  • DonnaLee

    I gotta admit, I’d hate-fuck him.

  • 2patricius2

Just goes to show that straight right wing religious people should not be allowed to marry. They are destroying the sacred institution of one man faithful to one woman marriage for life. :-0

  • Betcha Got a Dick on the Side
  • JDegarson

male or female? it didn’t say unless I am blind

  • Homo Erectus
  • Brian in Valdosta

Damn, he’s hot. Why are all the weird ones so damned hot? I can’t wait for the nude photos to be leaked. You know, the ones that he sexted to his “friend”.
