Southern Baptists Issue Call For Civil Disobedience Against Same-Sex Marriage

The Southern Baptist Convention closed out this week’s annual meeting by issuing a formal call for civil disobedience against same-sex marriage. The statement was issued jointly by current SBC president Ronnie Floyd and 16 former SBC presidents.

As Southern Baptist Christians, we are committed to Biblical faith and ethics. As a result, this body of Believers stands on the authority of Scripture and God’s Truth as central to our lives.

What the Bible says about marriage is clear, definitive and unchanging. We affirm biblical, traditional, natural marriage as the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. The Scriptures’ teaching on marriage is not negotiable. We stake our lives upon the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

Consequently, we will not accept, nor adhere to, any legal redefinition of marriage issued by any political or judicial body including the United States Supreme Court. We will not recognize same-sex “marriages”, our churches will not host same-sex ceremonies, and we will not perform such ceremonies.

While we affirm our love for all people, including those struggling with same-sex attraction, we cannot and will not affirm the moral acceptability of homosexual behavior or any behavior that deviates from God’s design for marriage. We also believe religious freedom is at stake within this critical issue – that our first duty is to love and obey God, not man.

Therefore, we strongly encourage all Southern Baptist pastors, leaders, educators, and churches to openly reject any mandated legal definition of marriage and to use their influence to affirm God’s design for life and relationships. As the nation’s largest non-Catholic denomination with over 16 million members, we stake our very lives and future on the Truth of God’s Word.

We also join together to support those who stand for natural marriage in the corporate world, the marketplace, education, entertainment, media and elsewhere with our prayers and influence, and resources.

Earlier this week Floyd declared that God will punish any Christian who does not oppose same-sex marriage.

  • bkmn

To protest they are going to stop going down to the park mensroom to blow off guys, for a day or two.

    • Reality.Bites

in winter, when it’s snowing hard.

    • cleos_mom

And then proceed to a gay-accepting church to blow away some of the congregation.

    • BudClark

What I’M afraid of is that what happened in Charleston night before last is a foretaste of what they’re REALLY calling for.

There has been a steady escalation of anti-gay violence since Stonewall … a SCOTUS ruling in our favor could be the last straw.

  • MarkOH

Every time I read this, I think of this image. Isn’t that odd?

    • HadenoughBS

“The Scriptures’ teaching on is not negotiable. We stake our lives upon the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus.”

      Pick-and-choose…pick-and-choose…pick-and-choose!

If Southern Baptists truly believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God and they must life their lives accordingly, then they must be committed to a mental institution. Why? Because the Bible is a book of contradictions by which no one can live by observing each and every thing in it. So, Baptists (and every other Christian religion) pick-and-choose that with which they can adopt as part of their daily routine.

Therefore, Southern Baptist’s proclamations against marriage equality is full of pure unadulterated bullshit. I give them no more credence in proclaiming the true word of God as I do to any other religious institution. Their anti-gay threats to me mean nothing – NOTHING! I am a much better person they these so-called Christian leaders by simply ignoring their ridiculous beliefs and protestations.

      • Steverino

“Biblical inerrancy” is perhaps the most pernicious doctrine of Protestant fundamentalism. I call it a cult of ideology. What you have pointed out explains why people who believe this are a study in confused contradictions and hypocrises. They are willing prisoners of their own device.

        • RoFaWh

The SBC was founded strictly to support slavery. A century and a half later, it’s only reason for existence is to bolster racial prejudices among the goobers and make them feel good about themselves.

PS: Biblical inerrancy is bullshit, as anyone who’s bothered to read even a little about the bibblical text knows.

          • clay

You don’t even have to read about the biblical text (from ivory tower atheist leftist pinko feminist . . . ); Biblical Inerrancy is not, itself, a biblical doctrine or concept; the Bible does not claim to be inerrant, and there are passages that clearly state that it is not (Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy).

          • Langalf

If you are referring to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, I think it is a bit of a stretch to say “there are passages that clearly state that it is not”. This passage does not really address inerrancy, but does clearly state that God inspired the scriptural writings.

    • cleos_mom

As I recall, there was a lot of out-of-the-closet hate during that era but it was more common for segregation-supporting churches to “love the colored people” (as long as they stayed in the Colored Balcony).

      • vorpal

Awwww… little has changed! They say that they would love us and even accept us if we stopped shoving our fabulous “homosexual lifestyles” in their faces and instead stayed in the Rainbow Closet.

    • vorpal

I’m willing to bet many of THEM do, too: they just know better than to admit it.

  • Ninja0980

And what are they going to do, block the courthouses?

    • BobSF_94117

That’s sort of where I think this is going. Without saying it, so they can avoid responsibility, they’re encouraging something, and there just isn’t anything else that makes sense.

  • j.martindale

    Who cares what you think?

    • Gustav2

      Certainly not the Constitution.

  • Baltimatt

What about those of us who are not “struggling” with same-sex attraction?

    • Herald

The “struggle” is due to their, the SBC and friends, animus, bigotry, and wrapping those in a religious package.

    • cleos_mom

You’ve committed the unpardonable sin of not letting them pity and try to “fix” you.

      • vorpal

        NOT BROKEN.

I checked quite thoroughly this morning :-).
All systems, including same-sex attraction, seem to be up and very, very functional indeed!

    • Jeffrey

I haven’t struggled with it in 25 years, except that one time I was tied up in Berlin…and I really didn’t struggle al that hard then.

      • Reality.Bites

        Cancelled flights are a bitch!

    • Steverino

Only homophobes and closet cases struggle with same-sex attraction. But as usual, they project their issues on us.

    • Adam Schmidt

Yeah, I am definitely not struggling with same-sex attraction. I revel in it! I enjoy it! From a surreptitious glance at the cute bear in line at Starbucks to scanning through my tumblr feed to enjoying my hubby in all his naked glory.

And it’s healthy! It’s part of being a complete human being to feel sexual attraction to others. So I feel sorry for Southern Baptists and those like them who wall off huge parts of themselves and pretend it’s because their imaginary friend told them to do it.

      • ^^^THIS!

      • RoFaWh

I don’t feel sorry for any Southern Baptist. They’ve made their bed, let them lie in it and wallow in their own filth.

        • vorpal

They’re clearly struggling with religious delusion. We should love them and be more supportive, but we absolutely should not embrace and accept their sick and disgusting, evil, perverted, reprobate faith-based lifestyle choice, nor should we grant it any legitimacy or recognize it in any capacity.

          • RoFaWh

            Vorpal, you are wrong.

They do not struggle with religious delusion. They eat, drink, and breathe it, and they enjoy every minute of the experience.

          • vorpal

…and we don’t struggle with same-sex attraction. (Maybe I needed to add an irony tag to that post :D.)

      • John30013

        Tease! What’s the Tumblr URL?

        • Adam Schmidt

          mine’s adamga.tumblr.com
And it’s very not safe for work.

          • John30013

That’s OK. I work from home 🙂 Thanks for the URL.

    • TampaZeke

They’re doing their best to make sure everyone with same-sex attraction struggles so that they can then save them from that struggle.

      • Eric in Oakland

I love that image! It illustrates so clearly the absurd contradiction and pathological cruelty of the concept of Jesus as a “merciful” “saviour.” This supposedly all-loving and all powerful person stays invisible and undetectable while consigning all of humanity to hell that doesn’t believe in him, yet saves the few who are gullible enough to believe in things without a scrap of evidence.

    • vorpal

I enjoy telling them that while never a choice, being gay is one of THE most fucking awesome things that I have had the fortune of being blessed with, and had I the choice, I would absolutely choose to be gay.

It’s fun to watch them freak out and try to make sense of that.

All of their quoted text in this article seems like a bunch of impotent whining.

  • Twenty years from now when the wealthiest families in their congregations come to them wanting their sons or daughters to be married in the church they’ve given so much money I bet their tunes turn on a dime.

    • lymis

      It won’t even take 20.

      • BobSF_94117

Oh, I don’t know. Look how long they have held onto the race thing.

        • clay

They held onto “the race thing” only one generation after desegregation.

          • BobSF_94117

Uh… the SBC was formed over a century ago over race.

And if you think you’re going to tell me that today’s SBC members don’t include a huge number of racists, don’t bother. Go tell someone who doesn’t have SBC relatives.

          • clay

The SBC formed over a century ago over slavery. The rest of the US didn’t get over their race thing with the Emancipation Proclamation and I don’t pretend that it did. Slavery and racism were related in the US, but they’re not the same thing. There are a majority of racists in most US sub-groups, but he SBC allowed inter-racial marriages and African-American members and leadership one generation after desegregation. They allowed free Blacks in society well before that.

          • BobSF_94117

            As our people say, whatever…

  • Ed Burrow

    (in Oprah’s voice)
You get a tantrum! You get a tantrum!
    Hell,
Everybody gets a mother fucking tantrum!!

    • Todd20036

      I like you. A lot!

      • Ed Burrow

        Aww shucks.
        Thanks man. 🙂

    • Sashineb

      JOSH DUGGAR! JOSH DUGGAR!

      • Langalf

Pffft. Amateur. You have to say it three times to summon him.

        • Sashineb

I wasn’t summoning him. Can’t think of a reason I’d want to be in his company. I’m sure he has his pitchfork and tar bucket at the ready.

  • Dan

I really hope most of them get out of Columbus today. Pride is tomorrow and I can easily see a lot of these asshole christians going out into the crowd to start some shit for jesus.

    • Todd20036

There were a few such haters at Capitol Pride. They looked so pathetic. Mostly, they were ignored. But also, they were mocked.

    • Gustav2

They are gone, Mayor Coleman is fumigating the convention center.

  • Blake Jordan

A mass suicide of southern baptists will really show the rest of us!!!

    • Todd20036

Reminds me of the Crack Suicide Squad in the Life of Brian

  • Tawdry D’Tails

I’d still love some suggestions of their “civil disobedience”.
    They can’t boycott everything…
They won’t emigrate to any seriously anti-gay country (they’re full of dark people after all).

    • Todd20036

They are asking civil servants not to process weddings of same sex couples.

They are asking caterers, bartenders, heck even janitors not to prepare wedding halls for same sex couples
      .
They are asking businesses that give married couples special discounts to not give such discounts to same sex couples.

      Yeah, pure animus.

      • lymis

But while I agree that’s what they’re doing, they are being very careful not to say so. Note that they only people they are actually speaking TO are pastors and churches – the people who will be safe from civil repercussions as long as they don’t do anything illegal.

They know it will be heard as a call to all Baptists to refuse to recognize anyone’s marriage, and they’re hoping it will result in a civil and social backlash (and likely, being prepared to be “compassionate” if anyone escalates it to violence.)

They’re carefully setting themselves up to both distance themselves from any actual anti-gay actions, and honestly, to be able to backpedal when nobody buys it – “But we were only talking to pastors about what to preach, not to the public on how to treat gay people!”

An atheist baker can sell someone a cake for a Bar Mitzvah or Confirmation without personally recognizing that anything meaningful is happening at that event – and would be expected to do so.

They refuse to acknowledge that a Christian baker can completely believe that God is not blessing a same-sex couple, or even that their marriage is evil in the sight of God, without feeling that the cake the sell participates in that.

        • Gustav2

It is the same stance they had with the KKK

          • Herald

You caught that too. As I read this I kept thinking about, slavery, women voting, interracial marriage, … they are playing the same ole broken record.

          • People4Humanity

            … and losing the argument.

        • RoFaWh

The fact that they attempt to distance themselves from the obvious implications of their hate speech is a ray of sunshine: it means that down inside, they are aware that their reputation, such as it is, is in tatters, and they’re (very, very faintly) ashamed of being such assholes.

Unfortunately, the hate-pastors’ shame is overwhelmed by their lusts for power and wealth.

      • barracks9

What a massive gulf there is between Civil Disobedience and NOT DOING YOUR FUCKING JOB.

        • Todd20036

Yeah, well, your statement requires a certain amount of logic and intelligence to process, both of which the haters lack

      • clay

Are they? All I’m reading is no church weddings, which weren’t going to happen, anyway.

        • IamM

There’ll be plenty of church weddings. All voluntary. At different rates depending on denominations, locales, and individual attitudes. They’re just disapproving in advance of the inevitable.

    • Doug105

      Russia.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Oh, boys, what are you going to do? Stand up and wave your church bulletins at us? Throw your bibles at passing cars? Jeezzusss…

  • TommyTune

Once again, the Southern Baptists have shown the world that they’re every bit as retrograde now as they were when they were first formed to resist the move to end slavery in the South. They are nothing if not totally consistent.

    • IamM

They are consistent in this and they are nothing.

  • Lakeview Bob

Please display acts of civil disobedience. It will continue to help lower the esteem of the baptist church.

  • Samantha

“We affirm biblical, traditional, natural marriage as the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime.”
    Two issues:
    1. they are also performing civil disobedience against divorce?
    2. the contradiction between “biblical” and “one man/one woman” marriage is glaring…

    • Todd20036

3rd issue, they aren’t accepting livestock as dowries. I’m supposed to give an iPhone for a wife? The fuck is up with that?

      • LovesIrony

a goat just doesn’t get what it used to

        • BobSF_94117

What would a goat do with an iPhone?

          • LovesIrony

            probably eat it

      • Larry in Oklahoma

Todd, you’re supposed to GET an iPhone as a dowry. 🙂

        • Todd20036

Aww man, I’m totally getting screwed here!

          • People4Humanity

You say that like it’s a bad thing?

      • vorpal

There is a perfectly BIBLICAL and easy solution to get a wife: find the woman of your dreams that can’t outrun you, rape her like the godly person that you are, and then pay her father 50 shekels of silver.

Using Wolfram’s converter, 50 shekels of silver in today’s currencies falls somewhere between $250 and $500 USD or so.

How can you go wrong (provided, of course, that you have no morals and are a complete fucking sociopath)? The amount of money you’d save on a wedding ring alone makes it worth it, not to mention the selection if you’re in decent enough shape.

    • Wynter Marie Starr

      Fourth issue

What the hell is “natural” marriage? It’s a meaningless made up term. I’d say as long as there are humans involved, it’s natural. Anything humans produce or create culturally becomes natural.

      • Todd20036

I love that phrase. Neither marriage nor religion occurs in nature, but gay sex does.

        But gay sex is unnatural.

        • Wynter Marie Starr

LOL, very true. I always tell people to get back to me when two animals walk down a forest path and stand in front of another animal that speaks. Both marriage and religion are social constructs, but those that use the term “natural” marriage don’t quite understand what a social construct is. Nor can they explain the term “natural” marriage. I admit to mocking such people, which isn’t very nice, but they really do have it coming.

          • RaygunsGoZap

Mocking can be an insightful gift! give it!

          • Wynter Marie Starr

It’s also the gift that keeps on giving.

        • Doug105

That nature person is one kinky F”er.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBhnKGQl5W4&list=WL&index=102

        • vorpal

If you tell them that gay sex is perfectly natural, then they exercise their love of logical fallacies and grab the goalposts and throw them across the field and into next year by saying something completely idiotic like, “WAHHHHH!!!!! Monkeys flinging their poo is perfectly natural! ARE YOU SAYING WE SHOULD THROW POO AT EACH OTHER?!?!?!”

          Uhhh, no.

Without sending these people to school for ten years first, there is little point in talking to them.

      • BobSF_94117

“Natural marriage” is just the latest formula to make sure everyone understands that gay people are outside nature…

        • Wynter Marie Starr

Yes, it is and that’s why I will never let them get away with that shit.

      • vorpal

It’s the marriage equivalent of “Natural Law” and “common sense”: it amounts of whatever the fuck the speaker wants it to be, and should be, like, totes obvs Truth to everyone else.

        • Wynter Marie Starr

Well, if we’re talking about gravity or something like that, what works on this planet doesn’t work on other planets. The laws of physics breakdown at the quantum level and near the event horizons of wormholes. (according to the math, anyway)

Marriage is a social construct and takes many forms, so I ask what form they’re talking about; marriage between one man and several women, one woman and several men, marriage that includes bride price or dowery, marriage that is matrilocal or patrilocal, marriage within families to keep wealth within families, marriage for political alliance, arranged marriage, marriage between two women, marriage between two men, marriage between one man and one woman, marriage in which the couple don’t live together and they only get together for procreation and brothers raise the kids, or the new kid on the block, marriage for love. People tend to sputter as most aren’t aware that these are all forms of marriage in various cultures.

    • Steverino

The threat to marriage was, is, and always will be divorce, but they are too stupid and disengenious to admit the obvious.

      • David Walker

Oh, they’re aren’t stupid about divorce. They know their congregations/incomes will diminish if they make an issue of that. Just one of the many landmines Jesus put in their way.

    • RoFaWh

Incidentally, when they utter such bullshit, it’s clear they haven’t bothered to watch any Betty Bowers videos.

    • StSean

i would love to know what this “civil disobedience” will look like. will it involved cold glaring from across the thanksgiving turkey? up-turned noses at children’s birthday parties? passive-aggressive father’s day cards?

    • Its hilarious how many divorced and remarried Catholics and Evangelicals there are who are happy to cheer on the condemnation of everyone else’s “sin”.

  • Sam_Handwich

No one cares what you do in your church. Just keep your bullshit out of the county clerk’s office. thanks.

    • SockMikey

… and away from laws that influence other religious beliefs and non-beliefs.

If they really believe in religious freedom as ardently as they profess, they’d respect other beliefs.

      • Maurine

If they think the bible is the only law they have to follow, where is all their outrage against divorce?

He says love & respect everyone…these damn hypocrites! Where is our freedom ‘from’ religion?

        • Sashineb

Divorce? The baptist divorce rate is sky high. Their holey buybull says in Malachi 2:16, “I HATE divorce, saith the Lord”. But that does that matter to god-fearing baptists? No, except that they had to admit it IS a scandal in their midst, as noted in this southern baptist resolution: http://goo.gl/qjkQDU

          • Maurine

I got into a argument with this divorced gal I know, that felt free to inform me that my gay son “Was not in Gods perfect plan” REALLY, What the Actual Fuck? When I pointed out that she was divorced & remarried…crickets.
I’m so sick of these religious hypocrites telling me my son is less.

          • Sashineb

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I was at the home of a baptist person and on the fridge, they had this magnet: “Christians aren’t perfect — just forgiven”. It was enough to make me gag. Really, if anybody is looking for self-righteous hypocrisy, start with the baptists.

          • Amanda B. Rekendwith

            Reminds me….
There are 3 great religious truths:
            1) Jews don’t recognize Jesus as the Son of God
            2) Protestants don’t recognize the Pope as the spokeperson for Christianity, and
            3) Baptists don’t recognize each other in the liquor store.
            😉

          • Sashineb

Perfect! I love that. Thank you!!

      • IamM

        If

    • Bob M

How is them not doing weddings or recognizing them an act of civil disobedience? any pastor or church has the right to marry who ever they choose. I don’t know of any case where a couple, gay or straight has ever taken a pastor or church to court for being turned down

  • Nic Peterson

Well, I am shocked! A temper tantrum from the SBC was the very last thing I was expecting. But, I can totally feel the love.

  • Won’t recognize same-sex marriages? I see your “civil disobedience” and raise you a “big ass lawsuit.”

  • BearEyes

bunch of petulant little 3 year olds stamping their feet in a public temper tantrum. Just one more reason to see them as irrelevant.

  • The Professor

Stop talking about it. Just fucking do it. See you in jail.

    • cleos_mom

You can bet your assets they won’t go so far as to make the gestures those Vietnamese monks made in the early 1960s.

      • Bluto

        Pity.

        • IamM

I may buy a pack of cheap lighters just in case.

    • clay

Do what? They’ve already admitted no one would force them to perform a wedding or recognize a marriage, anyway. Notice their announcement says jack-shit about business, or benefits, or work.

      • The Professor

36 states allow same sex marriage. If they are going to “resist” in some way they have 2/3 of the US to do it in. That’s what I mean. Stop issuing these empty threats and start defying. Otherwise, they need to STFU.

    • BobSF_94117

Well, you know what happens to people who go to jail…

      — Ben Carson

  • Gustav2

Please, boycott all the gay and lesbians weddings for which you did not receive an invitation.

  • delk

Didn’t any of these assholes think about South Carolina? Keep throwing gas on the fire, if anything happens the blood will be on your hands.

  • Cosmo Tupper

You are always free to oppose anything but you are NOT free to IMPOSE. Oppose all you wish but calling for “disobedience” is not your god’s way. You are so misinformed about what you perceive are your religious duties. You HELP people not HURT them. That is exactly why the young are seeing religion as a persecuter rather than embracer.

  • LovesIrony

biblical marriage: rape your choice of virgins, then marry her. Hey how many goats for your daughter? Fuck you you bigots, oh and I don’t struggle with same sex attraction I struggle with idiots like you fuckers.

  • Tom Kiley

But, religious disobedience is so much more fun.

  • pablo

Hey guys maybe you want to work on race relations first, and once that’s taken care of you can deal with gay marriage?

  • Larry in Oklahoma

Oh, they are talking it but they sure as hell won’t walk it. It’s much ado about nothing.

  • Richard Rush

Shouldn’t they have always been known as the
    Southern Fascist Convention?

  • joe ho

they’re right. the bible is anti-gay, just like it’s misogynistic and pro-slavery.

liberal christians can do all sorts of mental contortions and engage in all sorts of historical revisionism to pretend that’s not the case. but those fail in the end.

luckily christianity continues to decline at an accelerating pace throughout the industrialized west.

    • Reality.Bites

Liberal Christians also don’t believe in the 6-day creation or Adam and Eve, so it doesn’t really matter that they don’t believe in the rest of the bible either.

      • joe ho

but they are quick to quote the sermon on the mount and the other “pretty” passages which exist in the midst of so much bronze and iron-age barbarity. those parts of the bible they do believe in.

        • RoFaWh

The thing that’s rather sad about liberal xtians who go on about Jeebus’ moral authority is that everything he urged (love thy neighbor, etc) is found in any number of other religions. When it comes to moral teachings, the bibble is actually very weak.

  • JoyZeeBoy

Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Mosiach. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the head of the Christian faith. And Southern Baptists do not recognize each other in Vegas.

    • Sam_Handwich

they’re going to sit in their churches waiting for TEH GAYS to demand a wedding. and then when that never happens, they’ll go back to fuming about abortion

  • Mark

“Today, we do declare, that we will stand with jeebus – and drown out his voice so that everybody knows nothing he says really matters.”

    • joe ho

unfortunately jeebus was against “porneia” (sins of the flesh). that would have included homosexual sex. lgbt christers, desperate to keep their faith, claim jeebus never condemned homosexuality. but they’re wrong.

and jeebus himself was a nasty piece of work using violent images as in “i come not with peace but a sword” and “if anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters–yes, even their own life–such a person cannot be my disciple.”

luckily the jeebus doomsday cult is declining rapidly throughout the industrialized west.

      • Mark

Now stop that. All them pictures of him and a halo can’t be wrong! 🙂

      • Gregory In Seattle

You are confusing Jesus with Paul. Very common mistake.

        • joe ho

          lol.

“liberal” christers remain in denial and confusion.

          Mark 7:21

“ἔσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, φόνοι…”

And he said, l“What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, mmurder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

          he = jeebus, not paul

sexual immorality = porneia, which would have included homosexual sex

“In its earliest and original sense, porneia referred specifically to prostitution, of both the female and male kind. Thus from the beginning, even before being expanded in range, it was a term that included illicit sex whether of the heterosexual or homosexual kind. Demosthenes, for example, used porneia to refer to homosexuality centuries before Christ.

“Other literary products of Judaism (e.g., the Testament of Benjamin, Testament of Levi, Testament of Naphtali, and Jubilees) during the period between the Testaments (from 400 BC to the time of Christ) also use porneia to refer to the sin of sodomy.”

          • clay

illicit sex and prostitution are not the same thing, nor are they the same as committed relationships. As Jesus is portrayed, his view of the sin of Sodom was inhospitality– it comes up when the Samarians aren’t welcoming to the disciples. Jesus praised the Roman Centurion’s devotion to his “boy” and Jesus loved Lazarus differently than the disciples, Lazarus’ sisters, and others.

I don’t claim Jesus said nothing about homosexuality. I claim Jesus had a relatively tight, restricted sexual morality, but one that did NOT exclude the Roman Centurion, or his own, same sex love.

          • joe ho

and that claim is very hard for you to substantiate given the pervasive anti-homosexual attitudes deeply embedded in ancient judaism.

and where is your evidence that the centurion was banging his slave? pais is used often in the NT and its meaning is slave, not junior partner in a same-sex couple. the normal word for the passive partner is paidika, not pais.

this is the kind of interpretive overreach and desperation that gay christers engage in which is troubling. looking for validation in an essentially anti-gay, anti-woman, pro-slavery tradition.

it’s similar to the overreach of black christers who insist that the bible is anti-slavery because of the exodus story. unfortunately, the only slavery the exodus story is against is when israelites are enslaved. they remain free to enslave others and the bible lays out the rules for slave ownership.

why not worship zeus, apollo, and dionysus? those gods enthusiastically engaged in bisexual acts.

even in the greco-roman world where certain homosexual activity was accepted, long-term, life-long committed relations that actively included sex were NOT accepted, and were the subject of ridicule and scorn. while the emotional bond between the older and younger man could last, the physical relationships was not supposed to. the younger man when he matured was supposed to initiate a relationship with a younger man, himself, as well as to marry a woman.

after a certain age, males who were sexually passive were stigmatized. and the ancient hebrews went to great lengths to differentiate themselves from the sexual mores of the hellenstic world they found themselves in. and that included all non-reproductive sex. they were especially eager to reject homosexuality which for the ancient greeks meant mainly pederasty.

trying to turn jeebus into a pro-gay figure is a futile endeavor of historical revisionism. i can understand the motives of gay revisionists like boswell, but from a linguistic and historical perspective, his work has not generally held up to scrutiny.

      • cleos_mom

Of course, Jesus was an observant Jew of the first century CE. Due to the hostility to biblical scholarship on the right wing of Christianity, there are still believers who haven’t a clue — and don’t want to know — how totally alien that was from Christianity even 500 years ago and unrecognizable to Judaism today.

So you have vast numbers of people who just assume that Jesus was, at worst, a Methodist.

        • joe ho

and now lgbt christians desperate for affirmation are pretending that he would have been pro-gay!

the need to believe can lead to astonishing distortions of reality.

        • Octavio

          Good analytical comparison!

Hey! I recognize you guys! Weren’t you the ones who kept justifying slavery by using the Bible? Weren’t you the ones who kept pushing for war over that? As a white gay man, I am seriously considering declaring the Southern Baptist “faith” as a mental condition. As such, they should be medicated, placed on the government dole in “housing” (perhaps FEMA can set up camps) and have their right to vote removed. We can’t have mental patients fucking the world up for the rest of us.

“While we affirm our love for all people, including those struggling with same-sex attraction, we cannot and will not affirm the moral acceptability of homosexual behavior or any behavior that deviates from God’s design for marriage.”

I don’t struggle with same-sex attraction… I let it tie me up and spank my ass til it’s red ;P. Although some guys do think struggling is more fun. I tend to find that it chafes.

  • cleos_mom

They can “affirm love” for gays who are “struggling”; that seems to them to confirm what they already believe. This is the type of “love” a rat has for a carnival.

But there’s no more effective inducement to hate than doing, saying or being something that someone disapproves of and not being miserable as a consequence. People experience that in family relationships all the time; though not always involving something as extreme as hate. (‘Yes, I want you to be happy — as long as you’re doing what I want’)

Well guys, that’s it. they’ve beaten us. Yep, they’re going to pass a resolution against marriage equality. The war is over, they won. I mean, how in the world are we going to overcome a *resolution*?

  • Are there people really that stupid? Do they think that they are going to be required to hold weddings in their churches, or be forced to shout their approval for same-sex marriage from every mountaintop? I guess the answer is yes, and they are total dimwits.

    • KQCA

Eddi, I’m ashamed that I can answer your Q. Yes, they ARE that stupid. I was raised in it. I was stupid into my mid-20s and it was a long, long, long road out of that indoctrination. “God,” “miracles,” “Satan,” and “demons” are simple-minded explanations for everything from science and nature to coincidences. Groupthink is EVERYTHING in that subculture, and independent, rational thought is not only discouraged, it is shunned and punished. At some point I had to leave my relatives and friends on the road behind me in order to move on with a productive and healthy life.

      • Câl

I’m glad you were able to get out and hopefully found happiness. I didn’t have your misfortune of being brought up in a church like this, but made the even more stupid mistake of joining something like it in my teens (prompted by guilt at my gay feelings etc). It took me several years to realise my mistake and get out. I’m so glad it is all behind me!

I became a High-Church Episcopalian at age nine.

    • Fred

If I may offer an alternative: maybe they’re NOT that stupid, although when I say “they” I mean the SBC’s leaders that make these declarations. The leaders know they’re making meaningless statements, but also are smart enough to know this kind of fearmongering will keep the donations coming in.

As for their followers, yes, they are that stupid. I should feel sorry for them because their stupidity is being exploited, but somehow I just can’t muster up the sympathy.

  • Silent on the mass-murder of churchgoers by racists.

    • Todd20036

The murder of blacks, even blacks in a church, won’t bring in the donations that hating on the gays do.

Consequently, we will not accept, nor adhere to, any legal redefinition of marriage issued by any political or judicial body including the United States Supreme Court. We will not recognize same-sex “marriages”, our churches will not host same-sex ceremonies, and we will not perform such ceremonies.

In other words, you’re going to exercise the First Amendment rights that you already have. Well, that’ll show everyone! But what about “civil disobedience?” ‘Cause that’s something else entirely.

    • RoFaWh

One of the key elements of Gandhian civil disobedience is full acceptance of any legal blowback that occurs.

    • joe ho

you’re settling for too little by calling it even.

there’s no credible evidence at all for the existence of their invisible sky being.

  • justmeeeee

I still don’t get how you disobey a same-sex marriage. Unless you’re the one in it, how can you disobey it? And if you’re in one, you could only disobey it by getting out of it, right? And then you wouldn’t be in it so you could no longer disobey it. It’s a conundrum!

    • Reality.Bites

It’s all part of perpetuating the myth that this actually has fuck-all to do with them.

It is these calls by religious leaders for civil disobedience that leads to violence and unrest. Jesus would not approve. He said render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. A secular, government marriage contract falls into that category.

I’ve noted before that the southern baptists have been on the wrong side of just about every civil rights issue for over 150 years, so really—who cares the least bit what they think?

But I can’t help but point out the hypocrisy, in that this group ignores Biblical rules on divorce and remarriage—they’re completely full of crap; theirs is very much a “pick and choose” view of the Bible. (Which, to be fair, can be said of just about every Christian denomination.)

    • GreatLakeSailor

And just to round out the event, poly-cotton clad Reverend Hait’em grabs the mic and reminds everyone,

  • abqdan

Let’s all ignore their homophobic ‘civil disobedience’ bullshit. They keep saying that same thing that the first amendment says – “no-one will force us to marry or recognize the marriage of same sex couples”. Well hell, no-one has ever ASKED them to – and no-one is likely to. They are completely unaffected by any decision the SCOTUS makes. They should be given the same respect as a two-year old throwing a temper tantrum in the cereal aisle at the supermarket.

    • And like that temper tantrum throwing child, needs some time in the naughty corner until they have learned their lesson. No more preaching hate of any flavor, period. Only love, and acceptance and how to make the world better for children, the poor, the elderly and the sick.

  • oikos

There’s no struggle with same sex attraction- I love every bit of it and if I could choose, I would choose to be gay.

    • If I got to choose I’d be bi and date whatever awesome person I meet regardless of gender. But it doesn’t work that way.

      • Now wouldn’t that be fantastic! We should figure out how to turn everyone in the world sexually and romantically bi

        • It has been argued that most people, to varying degrees and in a variety of ways, are bisexual and that being exclusively attracted only to men or women is the rarity, not bisexuality.

          • I’ve heard that too. While I could be in love romantically with a lady, the idea of sex with one, is a no go zone for me. But I think more people would be bi if we didnt so tightly gender relationships. If children saw that love is love, and that no matter who they love its right and perfect then I could see the world becoming more bi that straight and gay

          • Schlukitz

Well, I am in that rarity then.

While I have loved any number of women in my life on a platonic level, I honestly have to say that I have never, ever, had a sexual fantasy that involved a vagina. LOL

And my only contact with one happened at the age of 16 when I was still exploring my sexuality.

Having accepted my homoseuality before I turned 17, I have not gone there since.

  • So they’re not going to perform any weddings for gay couples (no one thought they would anyway nor are the required to) and they’re going to continue pretending to boycott media that presents gay families and companies that support gay rights.

They’re going to talk big and do nothing: a Reverse Teddy (speak loudly but carry a tiny stick).

    • oikos

      Their irrelevance is at hand.

      • When I visit my parents I sometimes give in to the guilt trip and go with my parents to church. Here are two anecdotes that will tell you a lot about the SBC.

        1) They had just made a huge uproar about boycotting Starbucks at the time. I get to the church and everyone seems to be showing up with Starbucks in hand, including the pastor and his wife. “I thought you guys were boycotting Starbucks?” My mom just rolls her eyes.

        2) A long rant from someone in a class about how everything is open on Sundays these days. I’d just gotten back from living abroad where nothing was open on Sundays except maybe one convenience store in the train station or at a gas station. So I asked if this person went shopping on Sunday. “Of course I do, but I shouldn’t be ALLOWED TO.” So, he does it, but he wants the government to keep him from doing what he thinks he shouldn’t do. I offered the solution of not shopping on Sundays which would have the result of stores losing money by being open that day and they’d go back to a six day per week schedule. (It sucks to have to work on weekends so the employees would be grateful for that change.) Blank stares.

They aren’t going to do jack shit but they like to hear themselves talk like they will. Remember the SBC boycott of all things Disney? If not no one could blame you. Even Disney didn’t notice any drop in sales at all. They don’t follow through because that would require some inconvenience on their part. So if you think that people who can’t go without their morning Starbucks are going to jail for a cause, I can only laugh.

        • Sounds like every SBC person I’ve met. But why does your mom want you to attend a church that hates everything about you?

        • Schlukitz

” he does it, but he wants the government to keep him from doing what he thinks he shouldn’t do.”

This is precisely how these phonies are brainwashed to behave. Like zombies, they can only carry out orders given to them by higher authorities because they are incapable of using reason and logic to do what they perceive to be right on their own.

What “biblical ethics” do they follow? The divorce rate for baptists is through the roof. They’ve gone as far as admitting it is a scandal they should avoid, in their resolution here: http://goo.gl/qjkQDU Did somebody say JOSH DUGGAR??

  • Curieux Bleu

HELLLOOOOO, there, all you Southern Racist Baptists!!

Some one who thinks a lot like you folk just killed 9 Black American Citizens in their own Church, yesterday.

And all you can do as ‘Christians’ (LOL) in the face of this ‘Spitting in the Eye of your God OUTRAGE’ is to rave, scream and tantrum about civil disobedience in the wake of Equal Marriage rights? DAMN IDIOT FOOLS!

Possibly NOT ALL16 million of you SBC are Assholes, with your heads way up your own assholes in the “service” of an asshole concept of God,

    ……..but Hey, … “GUILT BY ASSOCIATION”. !!!!

Panderers! Hypocrites! Haters! Bigots. !!! If the worms don’t deprive you of “eternal life”, then HELLFIRE certainly will … cuz, should it exist, that is EXACTLY WHERE “Y’ALL” are headed! … But one or the other, GUARANTEED!

And your “leadership” are the SCUMBUCKETS of this planet, that is for certain. Take your “sincerely held” theology and shove it right up there

FUCK ALL OF YOU and FUCK YOUR RELIGION TOO!!

    • BRAVO!!!!!

      • BudClark

        What Curieux Bleu said.

    • Schlukitz

I could get behind that. ;-P

  • Queequeg

Funny, I don’t feel like I’m “struggling” with same sex attraction. What I do struggle with is the idea that assholes like these still preach hate on a regular basis. Why not end their conference by condemning racist attacks against black churches instead of fighting against people who only want the right to marry the person they love?

    • They refuse to acknowledge the fact that we are natural beings, and that we are happy being who we are.

      • Schlukitz

As a Christian lady in St. Pete, FL argued me to death on FaceBook last night when I refused to buy into her bible bullshit about sin…

“You just won’t let yourself understand what I am try to tell you.”

That’s when I called it an evening and wished her a wonderful life. lol

        • There are those who truly and absolutely believe in what they say. She sounds like one of them. There is a unable to be crossed divide between what they believe and what is reality to us.

          • Schlukitz

            Absolutely.

    • BudClark

My only “struggle” is finding people to practice homosexuality WITH .

      • Schlukitz

        You rascal, you.

You took the words right out of my mouth. lol

      • Homo Erectus

        Call me.

  • TreGibbs

I think it’s time for Civil Disobedience against Southern Baptists.

    • Homo Erectus

      Tax the bastards!

  • GanymedeRenard

Because nothing screams “natural” more than an institution that doesn’t occur in nature. Because nothing screams “biblical” more than an institution founded on polygamy and incest according to that book. Because nothing screams “traditional” more than an institution that has created a myriad of arrangements and variants depending on the many traditions and cultures around the world. Right. Where do they find these imbeciles?

  • Rod Steely

There are people being gunned down in churches and this is your biggest worry?

    • TampaDink

Maybe they’re are concerned for our safety, shotgun same sex southern baptist weddings might be a real threat to us. /sarcasm.

    • Reality.Bites

There are BLACK people being gunned down in churches. They’re not worried at all. They think they’re going above and beyond by not applauding.

  • Patrick Thomas

You don’t believe in my marriage, I don’t believe in your god. Let’s call it even and move the fuck on.

    • CB

      This!!

    • Homo Erectus

      Amen, brother!

  • CB

If by “civil disobedience,” you mean not acknowledging my relationship within the confines of your little club, two things: 1) I’m fine with that. I want nothing to do with you or your beliefs. 2) That’s not really civil disobedience. You’re just trying to sound important.

  • StraightGrandmother

Yeah claiming 16 million adherents, not buying it.
I read a comment once from someone who was raised Southern Baptist, apparently they keep you on their rolls forever if you were Baptized Southern Baptist. Kinda like grade inflation at colleges & universities except with Southern Baptist it’s membership numbers.

    • GanymedeRenard

Yup, pretty much like Catholics. Once baptized, always a Catholic (unless one formally apostatizes, which is a heavily bureaucratic process, like all things Catholic.)

    • OMFG! Really? Holy Crap! I’m one of the 16 million! Dang and no hope to be expunged huh?

      • Homo Erectus

The Freedom From Religion Foundation issued me a de-baptismal certificate.

        • But that doesn’t stop any religion from counting you as a member, right?

          • Homo Erectus

And if they put their hands in their pockets, they can count to eleven.

          • McSwagg

The Mormons will even baptize you after you are dead to get you on their roles.

          • I thought they only baptized Jews who died in the Holocaust?

          • McSwagg

They’re not particular. Why do you think the Mormon Church has the largest depository of genealogical records in the world? Their religion mandates that they research their ancestry so they can baptize them all into their cult. (I know about this because my older sister converted to mormonism years ago.)

  • MikeBx2

“our first duty is to love and obey God, not man.”

Such dangerous rhetoric. Once a disturbed person decides his orders have come from god, there’s nothing he won’t do.

  • dcurlee

I live in Nashville where SBC is headquartered. They have put one of their buildings up for sale. What I would give to be able to buy it and turn it into an LGBT center to help others and homeless youth.

    • That would have been delicious!

I’d love to open bars/strip clubs/ etc next to the extremely fundie churches.

    • McSwagg

You would just HAVE to name it the “SBC Community Center for LGBT Equality” out of spite.

      • dcurlee

        I love that

  • Lookingup73

There are a lot of things in society that don’t align with Baptist beliefs. Do they oppose those with such vehemence? of course not. They are pathetic anti-gay folks plain and simple. THAT is why we can call them bigots – they specifically target gays for discrimination.

They really don’t understand civil disobedience do they? You use civil disobedience to protest laws that are unjust and harm people. Gay marriage laws do not harm people. There is nothing to “protest” there.

  • Macbill

“What the Bible says about slavery is clear, definitive and unchanging. We shall have slaves”.

  • Ginger Snap

All they have is hate. I Glad we’ve got Love.

  • Clive Johnson

The Bible is not the defining document of the laws of the United States. Period.

  • Prixator

“What the Bible says about marriage is clear, definitive and unchanging.”

    Untrue and just phoney baloney.

    • that you own women? thats their wet dream. of course they’d LOVE to own people in general

    • BudClark

Yeah. So where are my multiple wives and concubines … and, oh year, what about my slaves?

    • Schlukitz

As is their phony claim that Christians created the institution of marriage and that it belongs to them exclusively.

Everything about that phony religion has been stolen from other phony religions and thus violating one of the own Ten Commandments…”Thou shalt not steal.”

    • Homo Erectus

They always read just the one verse from Leviticus, and ignore this one:

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
      —Leviticus 19:1

  • And this is why their children feel no remorse about bulling LGBT children, or saying racist remarks. They are raising a generation of haters, gee thanks….

    • Schlukitz

Someone should set-up a GoFundMe page for them so that they can buy Jack Boots and Gestapo hats.

      • At least that way we could pick the violent ones from the sheep and RUN from them!

  • TheSeer

Enemies of human decency and their racist, misogynistic, homophobic and bigoted Nazi book.

  • grobi

So anyone remembering this guy ?

    http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2012/07/outed-christian-author-jonathan-merritt.html

Daddy is currently condemning him on a national stage . I really want to know how their Thanksgiving Dinners are like .

  • Jim

Nobody cares if a gaggle of Southern Baptists blowhards don’t “recognize” marriage equality (whatever “recognize” is supposed to mean), and Southern Baptists don’t perform same-sex weddings to begin with. So what’s new here? Anything? And how does any of this rhetoric amount to civil disobedience? What are they disobeying?

  • BudClark

Unsurprising. The Southern Baptist “Church” was founded on hate and racism.

  • sword

The SBs are next going to bombard Fort Sumter to stop all of those Same Sex Marriages that will taking place there!

  • Schlukitz

Well, bless your hearts, Southern Baptist Convention.

  • Cattleya1

If they are going to be truly civilly disobedient can we presume they will sit cross-legged and silent as they are forcefully gay married?

  • Arkansan

Ronnie Floyd operates the two largest churches in Arkansas that just happen to be right near where the Duggars live. Is it any wonder this area is a hotbed of stupidity? And, we have Huckabee and Senator Tom Cotton to round things out.

  • Homo Erectus

Let’s hurry up and get those properties on the tax rolls where they belong.

  • JCF

“Earlier this week Floyd declared that God will punish any Christian who does not oppose same-sex marriage.”

Since Floyd’s “god” is the GeezUs-who-really-Satan, I’m not worried in the slightest. The Nazarean Carpenter DANCES at same-sex weddings! 😀

  • TexPlant

and their stance affects us how? No self respecting gay will be attempting to get married in a southern baptist church and I hope they have enough sense not to attend on. Keep your hate! We do not need you do condone our rights to love who we love. We want the law of the land to recognize our civil right to join into a legal and loving union with the person we choose! Fuck what any church thinks, your opinion is irrelevant just like your beliefs!!

  • Homo Erectus

Umm – The Southern Baptists account for less than 5% of the US population. There are likely more of us than them.

  • Michael Varian Daly

Y’all can reject it all you want. In most cases, that won’t mean shit. Where it contravenes Civil Rights Laws…? Well, you’ll wind up paying with your wallets.

  • Eric in Oakland

“What the Bible says about marriage is clear, definitive and unchanging. We affirm biblical, traditional, natural marriage as the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. The Scriptures’ teaching on marriage is not negotiable. We stake our lives upon the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus. Consequently, we will not accept, nor adhere to, any legal redefinition of marriage issued by any political or judicial body.”

Funny. If the biblical definition of marriage is “unchanging,” then why doesn’t his church allow polygamous or incestuous marriages like in the Old Testament? Also, if the “scrpture’s teaching on marriage is not negotiable” and they “stake… lives upon… the testimony of Jesus,” why aren’t they at least as concerned about divorce?! Jesus certainly had some harsh words about divorce but said nothing about same sex relationships.

    • TrollopeReader

Maybe they want to have monthly “Stoning Saturdays” and “Burn at the stake” Wednesdays?

      • Eric in Oakland

But lots of people host stoning and burning… Oh wait. You weren’t talking about pot? 😉

  • Oh, I see where they’re confused. They start out talking about what GOD says, and then they accidentally switch to talking about the legal definition of marriage. See, they don’t realize that we’re not legally fucking bound to follow the Bible. Ahem.

  • Geezus Christ

I’m really skeered! What kind of civil disobedience could they possibly be planning? I’m going to buy my husband and I a matching pair of Burqas so we can go out in public, hiding our identities as a same-sex, married couple. But wait – what would be worse? Being seen as a couple of Muslim women, or as a same-sex, married couple? Lawdy Lawdy, I truly am skeered!
