Pat Buchanan Has The Ireland Sadz:
St. Patrick Missed Some Of The Snakes

“Ireland appears to be going the way of Europe and America. Christianity is everywhere in retreat before the onslaught of secularism, materialism, and hedonism, especially among the young. And I think it holds. When the faith dies, the culture it produced begins to die, then the civilization goes, and, then, the population. As for the Catholic schools, I am sure that many of the priests, nuns and lay teachers are doing their best, but in the 21st century, the devil has all the best tunes. And, clearly, St. Patrick did not drive all the snakes out of Ireland.” – Pat Buchanan, speaking to WND.

  • Dramphooey

World Net Daily, Pat? Nice to see that trash like you has fallen.

    • Cuberly

      WND, ha!

Considering Pat’s ego that’s gotta sting a bit.

  • Enrico Webers

However, one of the snakes that were chased out of Ireland crossed the Atlantic and calls himself Pat Buchanan.

    • Robincho

I haz me a snake that is SO not getting down pat…

  • MacCrocodile

It’s true. The Catholic schools in Ireland really did their best to rape all the children into submission, but for some reason it just didn’t work.

    • MarkOH

And, funny, that is not as bad as allowing two consenting adults from getting married.

      • Todd20036

        Nor is flushing dead babies.

    • D. J.

Many of the rest ended up in cisterns….

  • Gustav2

Ahhh, the original culture warrior admits defeat. That calls for:

    • Gene

oh wow! you are right…it was he who coined the term in that heinous convention speech….holy shit, it THAT does not denote “victory” what will? 🙂

      • Gustav2
        • Gustav2

There is a part of me that is so happy he lived to see Marriage Equality.

          • David Walker

Yes. He may exit stage left now.

          • Gustav2

            Stage LEFT?!!!! lol

          • Randy

Snagglepuss want’s his catch phrase back!

          • Emma Duncan

I’m still a little disappointed that Falwell didn’t live to see all of this.

    • Steverino

Speaking of cartoons, Buchanan needs a good dose of Pogo:
“We have met the enemy, and he is us.”

  • IamM

I think civilization will be fine without the culture of abuse, neglect, molestation, and tyranny.

  • Guess

And Pat still wonders why St. Patrick’s Day isn’t named after him.

    • 2patricius2

He has also never admitted that his distant relative – President Buchanan – was likely gay.

  • SBrooks360

“I am sure that many of the priests…..are doing their best” – Doing their best kid molesting?

  • Michael Smith

Except St. Patrick driving the snakes out is a myth.

    • Doug105

      • David Walker

Haven’t seen that before. Thank you.

    • Gene

It was a metaphorical reference to his driving the Druids out of Ireland…no doubt the failed Scotsman (Scots loath the conservative Catholic…two things Scots are NOT) /uber American ultra patriot knows this, and wish it would happen again with gays/muslim imiigrants/Irish converts/femenists/liberal protestants/and European immigrants…the list goes on.
he is an old dinosaur…its NICE watching him lose everything he believed in, and seeing that he was wrong about who and what the US, and the western world, is.

      • BobSF_94117

By “drive out” you of course mean slaughter.

        • David Walker

          Well, yeah. There’s that.

      • grada3784

        he is an old dinosaur.

        Tyrannosaurus Putz?

    • Dramphooey

Are you sure? Patrick Buchanan is currently not in Ireland.

  • GarySFBCN

I guess we should be happy that he didn’t lapse into his racist bullshit.

    • David L. Caster

      Give him time.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Just because culture changes doesn’t mean civilization dies – it just changes. That’s the very nature of life, change or become extinct. The culture he’s talking about has held sway long enough.

He should read some history to see how the cultures his faith destroyed coped. It might come in handy.

    • zhera

To him and his ilk civilization means christianity. So in that sense he could be right, religion is losing power and may even be dying.

      • Wynter Marie Starr

Those with power and privilege are never willing to share. There was civilization before christianity and there will be civilization after its choke hold on culture lessens and after its demise.

Those that aren’t happy or accepting of that fact have not learned anything from history. They should have paid better attention.

  • 2patricius2

I am quite amazed that the only one who has been totally silent about Ireland’s vote for marriage equality is Bill Donohue and his Catholic League. He has been such a blowhard and on the news and everywhere else bemoaning gays and the Catholic Church. I wonder if he is too sick to talk. He did always look like he was about to blow a gasket and have a heart attack on air.

    • Gene

I assume it was because he is in hospital with a bowel perferation after he SHIT A BRICK in shock and horror. Or, he never really gave a damn and has just been using the topic for grifting….either answer makes sense.

      • Sporkfighter

If he shit a brick, he’d have a concussion to go with the perforated bowel.

    • oikos

He doesn’t know what to say. The RCC has ruled Ireland with an iron fist for centuries and in the blink of an eye, it is over for them. Porquemada is probably still crying and drinking.

    • Dramphooey

Evangelicals always try to link Christianity and the USA because if you can convince people that nationalism and religion go hand in hand you have quite a hold on them. Catholicism and Irish nationalism have always been linked together in events like Saint Patrick’s Day but the Irish just declared independence. This is quite a blow to Donahue.

    • Cuberly

Bill’Doh is too busy bitching about Jim Parsons’ new Broadway play.

He’s supper incensed. Yep, another day ending in Y at the Catholic League.

      • BobSF_94117

Hmmmm… it appears he’s back, writing about this and that. Nothing on Ireland. Odd. Perhaps too painful.

        • zhera

Maybe he hopes that by not mentioning it and pretending it didn’t happen, it will all go away?

          • BobSF_94117

The tail movement does sort of convey a dismissive intent.

          • Sporkfighter

It always worked for sex scandals in the church. Well, it worked until the internet was invented.

        • Cuberly

He’s probably tried writing about it multiple times but keeps lapsing into profanity laced rants and murderous death threats.

Another thing I noticed, the job listing they had posted is now gone. Wonder if they filled the position.

          • BobSF_94117

The job listing page still exists but they aren’t linking to it. Hmmm… Maybe he was in a pay dispute with himself and finally agreed to pay himself more money.

          • Cuberly

Ha! I now have an image of Bill arguing with himself in the mirror.

They had to have been inundated with trolled resumes after making that original job post.

  • rextrek1

someone needs to seek treatment for his alzheimers

  • TomF.

Incredible that in this day and age otherwise intelligent men and women still worry about their imaginary masters in the sky. Hey, I had a chip come loose from a tooth the other day and put it under my pillow. Sorry, no coins from The Tooth Fairy were in the offing.

    • Tor

The fairy only pays for perfect teeth. Not chipped ones. Better luck be the time.

  • Mark

I am so fucking sick of this shit – damn.

  • Larry Ft Pierce

    • Steverino

      ^ THIS. ^

    • bambinoitaliano

I’m stealing that for retweet to certain people 😛 Thank you!

    • abel

      Stealing this one, thanks!

  • JamesStone

Pat is “another one” who has always been obsessed with demonizing gay people…
Sorry Pat..our society will be much better off when old closeted gay men that never had the courage to come out and use their own self hatred to bash other human beings whither and die…

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Good grief, what a fucked up fundy.

  • David L. Caster

Religion and Christianity are neither perquisites for civilization nor required to sustain it. Faith, myth, and fantasy are ancillary to culture, neither sufficient nor requisite to its flowering.

  • BaddogLtd

Who the fuck keeps propping up this gnarled old corpse? It’s like “Weekend At Bernies” and even less amusing.

  • CanuckDon

The goddamn arrogance of hypocritical, self-righteous Christians and the rightwing with their “un-materialistic” innocence.

  • oikos

Those snakes aren’t going anywhere Paddy boy.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Wasn’t Ireland the country where all those babies were discarded in the septic ?

    • oikos

      The very same.

    • zhera

But that was God’s wish, dontcha know?!?

      • Wow, I never looked at it like that before. To think that the killing of innocent babies could in some way make a god happy. How is this god different from the older, so called pagan gods?

        • zhera

What God really wanted was for the babies to be smashed against rocks. But I guess the nuns had to make the best of what was available.

          • oh dear…….the very thought of that is making me cry. How can humans be so inhumane? HOW????

          • Harley

Not humans. Christians. 2 totally different animals.

          • It shouldn’t be, they should be humans first and xtians secondly. If you can’t love your fellow man, as they are, not as you want them to be, then you can’t be a very good xtian seeing as how jesus himself said to love your neighbor as yourself.

          • geoffalnutt

          • That is zero excuse to treat anyone with less than humane. We need to wrestle their moral superiority away from all the religions, and place it with the people who actually treat humans humanely with love and understanding.

          • grada3784

Obviously, older nuns just aren’t swingers.

  • Happy Dance

Yea, they are living as your hair!

  • Randy Ellicott

Whatever, in serious news they are actually in talks to remake Big Trouble in Little China with the Rock…. Now that is going to be the cause of the downfall of the nation!!! The Rock cant be Jack Burton!

    • B Snow

Why do they insist on remaking classics??

  • gaymex

Why do this idiots always think that changes to a culture must equal the death of the culture?

    • Because change is scary to them. They don’t deal well at all with different thinking, different ways of working/living/manufacturing/etc.

      • RoFaWh

        Xenophobia and future shock combined.

      • Veylon

Sure. If Pat & co. had lived 1800 years ago or so, they’d be railing against Christianity and making up stories about universal love orgies, missing children being used in Communion (that flesh and blood they consume at their secret witchcraft rites has to come from somewhere), and muttering darkly that the Persian Emperor also calls himself “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” so all this talk of peace and brotherhood of mankind is just a ploy by our Cold War enemies to soften us up before the slaughter.

        • how true. how very, very true. sad isn’t it?

  • CB

Well, I’ll give him secularism, and glad to do so. However, materialism and hedonism are not creating a current onslaught; they’ve been the stock in trade of the catholic church for millennia.

    • zhera

The mansions that various clergy are building for themselves are evidence enough for materialism and hedonism. I don’t even need to mention the Vatican, do I?

      • Or those lovely frocks they wear, with matching shoes and such fun hats! These fellas are ready for a garden party 24/7, just give him time to pick up his gloves and hostess gift and its party time!

        • Hue-Man

It helps to have a gay sauna in your apartment building!

          • That it does!

  • MikeBx2

It’s religion that is the threat to civilization. It’s the religious who are at fault for the demise of their beliefs.

  • Silver_Witch

I for one am happy to see christianity failing. It is not necessary to be christian to be moral. In fact, it is, IMO, easier to be moral without the ugliness of christianity.

  • Queequeg

Christianity is declining because people are finally realizing that religion, all religion, is nonsense. It has nothing to do with an “onslaught” and everything to do with being rational.

  • Clive Johnson

The central fallacy of Pat Buchanan’s worldview is that Christianity is necessary for an ethical and humane civilization. This is ludicrously naive, not to mention self-congratulatory. Ever hear of Confucianism, Pat?

What’s closer to the truth is that the defeat of traditional Christianity is a prerequisite to the emergence of greater cultural intelligence. To the extent that traditional Christianity prohibits people from coming to know the truth about themselves and their capacities, and likewise wars against science and open inquiry, it’s an objective roadblock to progress.

If the better remnants of ancient Greek culture had somehow reemerged in Roman rule, it’s possible that human culture could have make vastly quicker advances. We could have had institutionalized scientific inquiry over a 1000 years ago, or gay rights 500 years after the alleged birth of Jesus. I don’t think these are the least bit unrealistic, given the advances in thought and invention that were already known by the time of Constantine—one of the West’s biggest disasters.

Buchanan’s basic error is to believe that his religious ideology is true, when in fact it’s not much more than an inherited parochialism.

    • The rise of xtianity heralded in the dark ages. Our world went from one that treasured reading, learning and curiosity about the natural world to one of nearly universal illiteracy. If only we had a time machine and could go back and pluck out some of our more unfortunate pivot points.

      • Clive Johnson

I agree totally. I’ve had that same thought numerous times.

      • Amanda B. Rekendwith
        • Wow, that show looks interesting, I’ve never heard of it. I wonder if episodes are on the youtube?

  • Usual string of cliches.

One of the snakes Patrick missed was Pat Buchanan.

  • delk

Hah! Did he finally lay off the sauce enough to notice last week’s news?

  • lymis

“And, clearly, St. Patrick did not drive all the snakes out of Ireland.”

Yes, Pat, obviously he missed the archbishops.

  • Bernie Keefe

I didn’t know Buchanan was still relevant.

    • brian

      He’s not.

    • Homo Erectus

      Me neither.

  • jomicur

“When the faith dies, the culture it produced begins to die” Pat, dearest, you just might want to take a moment to consider that you’ve got it backwards, It’s the culture that produces religion, not the other way around.

  • Oh, so it’s all “let the people decide!” until they decide to support equality, and then it’s all “godless heathens!”. Fundamentalists demise is no surprise to anyone with half a brain.

  • KarenAtFOH

Dear Pat: Please review the thread below re Franklin Graham, Canada, et al. And also, Duggar.

  • DaveMiller135

Pat, we usually just say, “sausage fest.” Though I know a few guys who call it their snake, even “should I unleash the Anaconda?” That one never fails to disappoint. As indeed, nor do you, Pat.

  • shellback

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Aww, poor Patty Douchebaganan, can’t accept that people are wising up to the scam that is religious “morality.” Well, cry Patty dearest, cry until the well that is your soul runs dry…….and give the state of said soul, it should be a short cry at that.

  • anne marie in philly

excuse me, old has-been fuckwipe says what?

  • geoffalnutt

“Faith”, Pat, is aggressive, concerted stupidity. Surely society doesn’t want that or need it. So, when religion (and all its trappings) finally withers away the universe will be much better off. Fuck you.

  • alephnaughtpix

Looks like Mr Buchanan is making exactly the same mistake with Ireland that he did with Scotland in 1999: being suprised at a land of his ancestors does not think the same way he does, criticising that entire nation for having a mind of their own, then acting surprised when said nation tell him where to go. ( eg what happened when he slagged off Scotland: )

I wouldn’t be surprised if, as with Scotland, after criticism, he comes back with the old “I was taken out of context!!” nonsense. Mind you, that was an easier thing to get away with in 1999 than in 2015.

  • Hue-Man

I wouldn’t be surprised if Buchanan received finder’s fees from the wealthy Americans who bought 60,000 infants from the Irish catholic church.

“My new parents did it all by mail,” Cathy says. “They never came to Ireland. They just told the nuns that they wanted a girl aged four or five, to be a companion for their own daughter.

“They sent a shopping list of what they wanted”.

When I suggest, jokingly, she was a mail-order child, Cathy agrees. “Yeah, straight out of a catalogue.”

  • James

Isn’t it blasphemous to doubt the miracles of a saint?

    • Daniel

Ask Fr. Guido Sarducci (“Three lousy miracles! And I heard that two of them was card tricks!”)

  • Adam Schmidt

Except that you haven’t found that conclusion yet Pat… Yes, Christianity is failing in the West. But we haven’t seen any signs that the civilizations of the West are failing. And should there someday be such signs, we still haven’t established causation.

Nope, I’m just going to mark this down as yet another science your crowd doesn’t understand (Sociology in this case).

  • JCF

“As for the Catholic schools, I am sure that many of the priests, nuns and lay teachers are doing their best”

In the manner of Dennis Hastert.

  • yes, i remember reading about the global population rates plummeting. i do believe the human race is teetering on extinction. if only we had listened to pat

  • Orly

No, you dumbass, when the widespread belief in supernatural bullshit begins to fade, then the culture grows up!

    • Jasper

yea, i can see that from this blog.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

“And, clearly, St. Patrick did not drive all the snakes out of Ireland.”

Please, please, please tell me that he understands that the story of driving the snakes out is a fucking myth? Ireland is an island with no native snake species. The last species of reptile died out there during the ice age. Great Britain and Ireland were separated by rising sea levels from the rest of Europe a long time ago.

    • Homo Erectus

He never met a myth he didn’t like.

  • rusty57

Another wretched, miserable Irish catholic boy who has never gotten over the priest touching him.

  • Michael

Militant anti-gay activist Buchanan is one of the reasons that young people are leaving the church. “Culture War” anyone?

  • Duck

Somehow I missed the part of my history classes that had the former expanse of the Roman Empire become depopulated when Constantine converted the Empire.

  • Homo Erectus

Thank god that St Patrick didn’t dispose of all the one eyed trouser snakes 😉

  • Balderdashing

“Christianity is everywhere in retreat against reason.” There, fixed it.

St. Pat didn’t drive ANY snakes out of Ireland. They disappeared when he sobered up.

“When the faith dies, the culture it produced begins to die…”

And about goddamn time, Patty Boy. If I were going to pray, I’d pray this geriatric Catholic shithead lives long enough to see the collapse of the Church in Ireland.

  • Josh

When is this walking bag of offal going to drop dead, right in the middle of the road? It shan’t be a day too soon.

  • BudClark

“As for the Catholic schools, I am sure that many of the priests, nuns and lay teachers are doing their best.”

Priests AND BISHOPS raping little boys and young seminarians; nuns throwing 800+ dead (?) babies into a septic tank. If that’s their BEST, I shudder to contemplate their WORST!

  • StraightGrandmother

Women have it better, at least they are not locking them in as prisoner laborers scrubbing laundry just because they had a baby (which was always stolen from them by the nuns) without being married.

Yeah my desire for nostalgia is not the same as Pat Buchanan’s.

  • goofy_joe

The old always think the new are going to destroy the earth…and yet, it’s never happened. Typically the destruction comes from the old not wanting to let go.
